ON THE BOAT.

Seiko was sat on the deck of the boat with her nose in an English textbook, she sighed, she was still finding this language hard, even working hard she felt she was making little progress. She had however got hold of a tall glass of fresh orange juice so she sipped that and looked around to distract herself from her inability to learn.

She looked around herself at the scenery and smiled to herself, her Mother (after hearing she was going to the 'Satou heir's' beach house) had insisted on sending Seiko on the boat, and repacking most of Seiko's luggage. Seiko was now a little suspicious of what may be lurking in her bags, knowing her mother's odd ideas of what clothes were suitable for her.

She picked up her book again half interested and tried to start reading again.

Tom walked along the deck of the boat. His usual trim figure had somehow changed, and he had a bulge around his midsection. A bulge that seemed to want to move around. When he approached Seiko he looked at the text book, and her expression.

"Is something bothering yu Yukizaki-san?"

Seiko looked up, frowning slightly at her own inability and then at the strange bulge on Tom. Hazarding a guess at what it could be her face broke into a smile and she sighed putting down her book.

"Oh hi Tom." she said carefully dropping the honorific. "I'm just not getting this, I keep trying but English...I just can't get to grips with it. I really want to travel before I go to University, and America has so many things I want to see, but if I can't talk properly then it will be impossible." She sighed again and rubbed her temple, trying not to stare at what Tom was hiding, however tempted she was. She didn't want to draw attention to the stowaway.

"And Tom, it's Seiko, not Yukizaki-san. Remember?" she gave him a wide bright grin.

Tom blushed.

"Oh... right... sorry... uh, Seiko." He reached up to scratch his head. The bulge moved quickly at the sound of another persons voice.

"English is a hard language to get grip on, It was built on the bones of several dialects, so it has a lot of contradictions, and that. The US does have a lot of interesting places." He moved to sit next to her, then decided against it, letting out a breath.

Seiko grinned back at Tom, eying up the bulge with interest, and a reasonably good idea of what it could be.

"Its just a grade that really lets me down as well, it's structure just seems so different..." she tailed off with a sigh and with a great deal of disappointment at herself.

"Its stupid but I want to see a lot of the tourist places. New York, the Grand Canyon, just silly things."

She looked a little embarrassed at her comments, and then frowned very slightly at Tom's movement, did he not want to sit with her? Maybe he thought she was being stupid? Seiko was not used to self doubt so covered by smiling again.

"Are you looking forward to this trip Tom?" she asked, a bit of a lame question, but she didn't have any better ideas.

"The city itself is amazing. When you walk around at night on the street, the buildings go up for ever." Tom moved to lean against the railing of the ship.

"It's... kind of like some of the cities here, but it... feels older. It can be kinda dangerous, but so worth it. I um..." He shrugged. And glanced at her.

"...I'm curious to see how it will go. I don't know if I'm looking forward to it. ...I guess maybe I am a little."

"Ahh it sounds awesome, except that I'll probably feel really short next to the buildings." she smiled for a second wondering how Tom knew so much about the city. Having forgotten Tom was half American for a few moments, those kind of things weren't really what she remembered about people.

"Dangerous? I'll have to be careful, I could take one of my cousins I suppose." She fiddled with the corner of her book.

"How it will go? It should be fine, I mean whoever is...uh doing stuff to our friends, won't be allowed onto the beach and stuff as it is private. So it'll be harder for them?" she shook her head still pretty unsure of how all this stuff worked.

"Its good even if you are looking forward to it a little!" she exclaimed suddenly with her usual cheerful tone. "Its going to be fun, I'm sure of it!"

Tom cocked his head to one side.

"You know you could also take some of the people from our group of friends. I'm sure some of them would love to go. As dangerous as New York could be, I know a glare from Ikeda-san would be enough to keep some of the people away. Or I could even go, depending on the timing. I wouldn't mind seeing home again." Tom felt slightly uncomfortable, like he was over stepping his bounds.

"... Maybe for a little bit... just New York, you know, I wouldn't want to intrude on your whole trip." The bulge in Tom's coat made a very soft growl, and shifted slightly.

"But...yeah... being all alone... just us, and no one else, and no where to hide. It should be fun."

"Ehhhh! It'd be awesome if you came Tom!" Seiko exclaimed bouncing up off her seat and sending her book flying across the deck, not paying attention to her book for a moment her face broke into a grin.

"I'd not worry at all if you were there, you always know how to keep everyone safe, and aren't scary like Ikeda-san..." she paused for a moment. "You'd never be intruding Tom, we're friends!"

Seiko sighed and looked out across the water, "I'm looking forward to a break, I've only been part of this a while, but the idea that there is someone... It will be nice to escape that for a while."

Tom looked at Seiko With a smile and a slight blush.

"Well I... I guess... uh... Thank you." Tom let out a breath and felt oddly exposed for some reason. He had to look away and grip the railing of the ship to get his bearings.

"I... we'll stop them Seiko, I promise."

Seiko nodded with a sigh. "Its just...I'm not so worried about me, its the others." she shook her head, I'm the oldest, I feel like some of them are so vulnerable."

She laughed "Maybe that sounds silly, I'm just scared for them...cause most of them are a bit..." she waved her hand and smiled again. It was far easier to worry about them than herself, to have to deal with other people's lives rather than her own.

"I really hope we do stop them, people have already died..." her smile dropped a little, but she was pleased to hear him call her by her name.

"I think they're learning. One of the things Paradise has taught me is that I need to learn to trust my friends." Tom turned and leaned against the railing. Doing so, however made the bulge in his jacket very pronounced. And a small, cold wet nose poked out from the folds of the coat.

"Huh... that's odd..." Tom put a finger to his chin, and looked perplexed. "I know... I just met you... but it... feels like you've been here almost the entire time."

Seiko nodded bending to pick up her book then leaning against the railings of the boat. "I trust them, we all want the same thing after all, but I wonder how much some of them really think about what this stuff means..." she shrugged. "Though when Ito-san got taken everyone did work as a group!"

She glanced down at the little nose poking out of Tom's jacket and realised she already missed Goro-sama, she'd have to bring him back a present, though fish wouldn't last the journey, she'd have to ask Kanaye.

"Really?!" Seiko exclaimed with an excited smile, that seemed slightly more vulnerable than her usual grin. "That is-that's...I'm really glad." she finally said quietly. "Joining the group so late on I was worried I'd always be a kind of outsider."

"Well, since most of us are outsiders I don't think you have much to worry about in that regard. But honestly, Seiko I think you're very much one of us.".Tom found himself trying to work her name into the conversation more. Like he was exceptionally proud that he could say it.

' I don't know if that means more or less coming from me given how long it was before I accepted that I was part of the team." He noticed Seiko looking at his jacket and looked to see the nose poking out. He put his hand over the nose and looked at Seiko.

"uh... sorry..."

Seiko nodded her head with a thoughtful expression which broke into a gentle smile that seemed far more mature than her usual slightly manic grin. "The reasons we've been thrown together are terrible, but belonging to something like this kind of-" she paused and rubbed her nose with her finger. "Its a silver lining, without this group I'd not have met some people who I already care about a lot."

"It took them a long time? But thats stupid Tom cause you are-" she tailed off suddenly a little embarrassed about this subject, or more about how she suddenly was unsure of exactly what quality in Tom she was about to praise. "-Really cool" she finished wishing she could have thought of something a little less clumsy to say.

As Tom moved his hand to cover the small nose that was poking out of his jacket she gave a small giggle. "Its fine, I wish I'd been able to bring my Goro-sama, but people get scared of him for some reason..."

Tom's hand shifted, and he began petting Max with a smile.

"He's never been alone anywhere but the dorms. I'd feel bad leaving him by himself in the pet carrier." He smiled to see Seiko giving him a more genuine reaction. He was worried she just smiled through all of her problems, and Tom liked people who were honest a lot more. The compliments on the other hand...

"It wasn't them, it was me. I didn't think they wanted me on the team And they only included me because I had a persona. I didn't change that point of view until they saved me from Paradise."

"Well I doubt Kanaye-kun will mind, plus it means Max gets to run around in a safe place." She looked at Max fondly, she preferred cats, but Max really was very sweet. She was pleased to see Tom smiling more, and it was nice to react to things without having to reassure other people with her smile, or attitude.

"Ah, that's a shame Tom. I guess at least you know now that they care. I mean I don't think all of them are exactly 'good', but at least we are all on the same side and if I..." she shifted. "If I ever went to that place..." she shook her head. "Well its just reassuring, to have everyone."

She held in a sigh and wondered what Tom must have been like before, would he have even spoken to her like he was now? She remembered him from classes, but not as anyone she had really paid attention to. Even when people gossiped about him she'd not listened a great deal, she had never been one to judge people on hearsay.

"It was more the boat ride I was worried about." With Max no longer needing to be hidden, he stealthy reached his paws up Tom's chest, climbing up to his face. As soon as he was close enough, Max began to lick Toms neck and chin.

When she expressed her concern Tom paused and looked over to her. He tried to get Max to stop, as it would ruin would would otherwise have been a rather dramatic comment.

"Seiko, if you ever ended up there, we would save you. And even if someone tried to pull a Kondo-san on you... well... either way. I'm not letting anything happen to you."

"Well so far nothing has happened, but..." she shook her head, "I feel better having everyone here, and you to talk to." she smiled and reached out a little hesitantly to tickle Max's ear.

She was distracted for a moment by Max's antics, but then tilted her head to look at Tom, pulled a Kondo-san? Oh right the kidnapping...

"I don't know if..." she lent on the railings and propped up her chin on her hand. "I don't think I could forgive myself if any of you got hurt trying to rescue me though. I don't want anyone to be hurt because of me ever." Remembering what had happened to Tom last time, even what had happened to the others fighting Ito-san's shadow. It was unbearable to think that she may cause something like that.

Tom shook his head.

"I can understand a desire to protect the others, and there are some people I would rather see protected. But..." He sighed, and turned to face her, meeting her gaze.

"Seiko, you can't ask any of us to not get hurt on your account, but then ask us to accept it when you get hurt. We all risk our lives in there, every time we go in. And you're part of the team that means we'll risk ourselves for you, just like we would for anyone else, and like you would for us."

She sighed and rested her chin on her hand again. "But if someone died for me...well what I'd be left with is no kind of life I'd want to live, especially if it was because of a part of me."

She shrugged and smiled again. "But I guess there is no point worrying, I mean once we find this person they won't be able to do this anymore. So we just have to work hard and find them, then we'll all be safe." she sighed and tugged at her bleached hair.

"I wish I could be more help with the investigating side though, I'm not great at puzzles and stuff. I guess I can understand people okay..."

It was something that had been troubling her, how little ability she had at puzzle solving, working out clues. She wanted to be helpful, to get this solved as quickly as they could so everything could be normal again.

Tom sighed and looked back toward the water.

"If someone died, then we'd just resurect them. It's not like death jas any meaning over there now." At her mention of the investigation Tom shoulders slumped.

"You could be Naoto Shirogane and it still wouldn't make much of a difference. I spend everyday pouring over the notes of this case and all I have are vague theories. Paradise doesn't even operate on the same rules as the real world, meaning we need to build our investigation from the ground up."

Seiko bit her lip, bringing up death maybe hadn't been the most tactful thing around Tom. After all what had happened to him. She wondered though what would happen if those who could resurrect them died, or weren't there what if the persona powers vanished? She shook her head, it was unlike her to think of such pessimistic things, Paradise was getting to her...

"Well, I'll help, however I can. I might not be able to figure things out but I can record stuff or..." she shrugged. "Anything you need me to do really."

she smiled, she wasn't as terrified as she probably should be, and her personal safety wasn't what she was concerned about, but her friends, that was a different matter. It wasn't only those in the group, after all the first people to die hadn't been part of the group. What if whoever this was started going after normal people from Iburi? Her friends, her family. She refused to let anyone die.

Tom smiled, and nodded to Seiko. He reached up to pat her shoulder, then felt like it might be awkward, and covered it by petting Max instead.

"I know Seiko. Don't try to stretch yourself too then. We can't all do this by ourselves. I had to learn that the hard way you know."

She tugged at her hair with a sigh and shrugged looking out at the water for a moment then turned to Tom with a subdued look.

"I know, I can't do it on my own, I just wish it wasn't as dangerous. Physically and emotionally people are getting hurt." she smiled. "Guess that is why we are taking this break, hopefully it will help people a little bit."
