The sun was out again in full glory today, a shining golden coin in the sky that winked in between fat, lumpy clouds.

Reizo cast an eye up at the sky, at the ponderous white clouds, and frowned to himself. Rain would be a double-edged sword today. It could make her call the entire thing off or it’d make her huddle closer to him under the umbrella in fear of the wet, and wouldn’t that make the nice picture? The weather service said that the rain wouldn’t hit until late in the evening, so hopefully he wouldn’t have to deal with trying to coax her to stay if it did show up early. His wallet was already going to take a beating, but it should hold out ..

He muttered to himself when the mental image of his huge water cooler full of money surfaced, half-empty and looking gutted. Reizo wasn’t a scrooge by any stretch of the imagination, at least not when it came to his bike or his boys, but he’d never dropped a serious stretch of cash on an operation like this, let alone a girl. Oubai had better appreciate all the money he was spending on him. That camera had cost a good chunk of money, and now he was taking his girl out for whatever she wanted!

He grunted, lifted a thick wrist to check his watch for the time, and went back to looking as thoroughly un-dour as he possibly could as he shifted weight from one foot to the other. Trains kept arriving, and passengers kept spilling out in eager rushes to get out of their crushed quarters, but still no Kozue. Not that he’d seen.. And knowing Kondo, she’d definitely be noticeable. Maybe not as noticeable as a 6’4” slab of muscle with a shock of white hair with an angry red stripe of a scar twisting one corner of his mouth up into a constant smirk, but pretty damned noticeable.

"I can always take some of it to go, for later," she answered, as if this were the most natural concept in the world—and certainly as if he weren't the one who had financed this far, far larger than necessary meal. She was already eyeing the plates, deciding what looked best—was that a ganache? oooh—and what she needed to try first.

Reizo was, however, undoubtedly correct about Kozue not finishing it all, but it had more to do with wanting to be seen as a small girl than actually being a small girl; she'd take a few bites from everything, doubtless, maybe sneak a whole eclair or croissant or that thing with the raspberries on top, whatever it was, and then she'd have to stop before it began to seem like she was a pig. And then, if past patterns were predictive, she would spend the rest of the time at the table eyeing what she had not finished and trying to figure out how to get at it without anybody seeing.

At least without anybody she wanted to impress seeing; this was the reason that Kozue cast a slightly shifty look around the cafe before intoning itadakimasu and picking up her first bite of totally free, super gourmet, yakuza-bankrupting breakfast.

Yum.

"I manage to get taken care of pretty well," she commented, after a moment of trying to sit very still while she ate. She had become aware of Shirai's hand, and the fact that it had come to rest on her hip and was not, for the moment, moving. She made herself relax, not wanting to reveal any discomfort—her smile wasn't even particularly faked. Because the slice of strawberry cake was good—and because this was, in fact, the way that she got herself taken care of.

“Better’n letting it waste. I’m sure you and Ikeda can scarf down whatever’s left tonight,” he said, settled in thoroughly against her, strong fingers curled delicately around the swell of her hip. He was a big, rough and tumble looking guy with big, bulging muscles and a wallet to match. That alone probably would have been enough to make it look like the most natural thing in the world for him to have a pretty girl on his arm, but his flashy white clothes, scars, and the shady self-importance he oozed made it all too clear what he was, and why it wasn’t just natural for him. It was a birthright.

He watched the people watching them, staring right at them whenever he caught their furtive glances in time, taking an occasional sip from his drink when he wasn’t swirling it around to make the ice tinkle and clink against the edges of the cup, and doing his damnedest to ignore his ‘date’ as she picked at her food. He knew well enough what it was like for pretty girls (and women) to eat in public. Mama Shirai had always made it clear after a night out with him and his father that when she got home she was going to stuff herself with the leftovers and smoke a whole carton of cigarettes, and what bullshit it was to keep up the proper and demure lady act for hour long stretches just to keep up appearances.

That was probably why he was smiling as he watched her out of the corner of his eye.

“You don’t need to hold back, Kondo-chan,” he chided her gently, “you got me to deal with anyone looking at you funny or saying something today.” He plucked the next pastry she was going for as he spoke away from her and ate it in one huge chomp, no sign of hesitance or restraint. He was already taking her out-- why not try and make her day as enjoyable as possible? A genuinely happy Kozue would make the pictures sting that much more when they got back to her boyfriend.

“Pretty good ain’t bad at all, but you could have so much more.”
