Who: Renju, Kozue, Keiichi, Tom.
What: Discussing things that needed discussing eventually.
When: The day after the minidungeon.
Where: The Butterfly Room.
Why: Because Renju's starting to gain a bit of courage.

Three months ago, even three weeks ago, Renju wouldn't have dreamed of calling a meeting like this.

But a great deal had changed in the last few weeks, and so here she was, sitting on the floor across from the couch (not on it, not anymore), awaiting the arrival of the other three. It wasn't what she'd consider the ideal group for discussing that place with (that place that some tiny part of her still called 'home'); if she'd had a choice in the matter, it would've been a one-on-one conversation, preferably with someone who wasn't Tom, given how utterly awkward things were and how much worse this context would undoubtedly make it. But what had happened in his place was relevant, and his analytical skills were second to none, and so there it was.

The hands would periodically pester her with the hugdolls; irritated and tense from thinking about the upcoming topic of conversation, she'd shoo them away (although not without, despite herself, sparing a quick peek at who they were bringing over and then proceeding to push it out of her mind). There was a part of her that would welcome the distraction, but the rest of her knew she didn't need it.

Kozue came trotting up the stairs in heels and one of those really classic little summer sundresses that she could totally wear now that she wasn't at home and was free to dress as she pleased. It was probably a bit on the tiny side, but Kozue didn't care. It was hot outside; she needed to cool down; this made perfect sense.

The Butterfly Room was less over-warm, and Kozue's skin prickled as she entered. "Hey, Sonozaki-senpai," she said, slipping in the door and looking around, catching sight of Renju immediately. She crossed the odd-sized room and sunk down onto the couch.

Keiichi, for his part, came into the Butterfly Room soon after, from the new Noodle Alley entrance. As such, he toted with him a bag that contained, presumably, takeout of some kind.

"I brought dumplings for everyone," he explained. "Not really a meal. Probably just enough for a snack for us all, and--"

Sundress.

Things with Kozue might not have worked out, no. But there was still the fact that she was rather cute. Sundress helped.

"--so three of us, then. Is Tom hiding behind the couch?"

To answer Keiichi's question Tom appeared from behind the couch. Well, hugdoll Tom. It seemed the hands may have felt his presence was necessary, or just trying to help Keiichi.

A moment later Tom stepped into the room, He wore his usual black suit, and hat, which pulled low almost managed to disguise the fact that he had a black eye. He tipped his hat to them, and looked for a spot to sit down.

"Sorry I'm late."

"You're not late."

Renju had hidden the faint pink blush that had spread when Kozue came in in that sundress behind a push of her glasses up her nose, a motion that the hugdoll she hadn't noticed sitting by her mimicked (with much less success), and nodded to Keiichi and Tom when they arrived, grateful for the distraction.

"We should get st--" She paused in mid-sentence, peering at Tom's face. "--you're hurt, senpai."

Keiichi, too, had noticed the black eye on Tom. At this point, he wasn't quite...surprised by the fact that Tom was injured, though he was somewhat concerned.

Still, he was rather amused that hugdoll Tom HAD been behind the couch. "The doll likes to do that," he pointed out. "It seems to have all kind of adventures in here. Keiichidoll gets drafted into them a lot."

Keiichidoll nods. It seems to be alternating between clinging to Kozue and Renju's legs.

"While we try to figure out what's wrong with our intrepid detective, who wants dumplings?"

"Hey, watch it," Kozue cautioned the doll of Keiichi that is clinging to her leg, although her warning was kind, rather than harsh. If it started looking up her dress, though, it was going to be in trouble.

"Sagaki-senpai, how did that happen?" She scrutinized his face, already fairly sure she knew the answer, though she didn't like it. Why was he fighting? He wasn't a... okay, he was a bit unhinged but not unreasonably violent. "More importantly, do you want to see if I can fix it in Paradise?"

It was a chance to be useful—and Kozue felt as though she was finding fewer and fewer of those these days. But someone had offered her something tasty, too; "And I'd love a dumpling," she said, with a smile.

If she noticed any ogling or staring from anyone in the room, she really didn't seem to mind. Then again, if she cared about being stared at, she would wear suits or sweats all the time. Kind of like Sagaki did, which... "Hey, why are you wearing a suit, today, anyway, it's like a thousand degrees out." Hyperbolic description, but a genuine concern. He looked like he would bake—hopefully it wasn't wool.

Not nearly as injured as the icon is.

Tom reached up and touched his face and rubbed the eye. He'd almost forgotten the hit he took there, and made a mental note to ice it next chance he got.

"Oh! yeah... there was a thing... with some guys. The wanted to prove they were tough by picking on some kid. It was a lucky shot anyways, nothing to worry about. You don't have to waste your energy on me Kondo-san." He still felt uncomfortable over the idea of all these people fawning over him when he got injured. His pain was his own fault, and he knew how to handle it. He still gave Kozue a small smile.

"But thank you for the offer, I appreciate it." Tom staunchly refused to let himself join the others in being distracted by Kozue in a sundress. Tom had seen what thoughts like that did to people, and he was not going to go down that road again. He sat back, not bothering to take a dumpling. When Kozue asked about his suit, Tom pressed a hand to it. He supposed that here he could take off the jacket and hat at least.

"What else would I wear? School is out of session, and Max got mud all over my t-shirt. Besides, how would I hide all of my weapons?"

She blinked. Blinked again. "I… Look, this is a problem that we are going to handle later. Right now," she peeked down and checked her watch. Quarter of. "In fifteen minutes I'm going to see about fixing your face, but until then, we should talk about what we came here to talk about—and eat dumplings." A smile bloomed on her face.

"It's that place, that belonged to Tachibana's boyfriend, that… I guess it kind of brought up a lot of things about Paradise that we hadn't been thinking about before. Like the fact that now we know that at least one person who died had a Persona." She stopped, and took a breath; it was actually more comfortable to talk about her thoughts with these people than with the whole group. She didn't have to worry about Reizo shouting her down, or Misaki going off on a tangent, or the possibility of arguments. She felt personally comfortable, too: Tom had called her smart more than once; Renju had talked with her about meaningful stuff, religion and all; and, well, there was a certain level of comfort you had for a person when you'd taken their virginity; Keiichi might make her feel uncomfortable sometimes, but not intellectually.

What intellect there was to speak of, at least.

"And there was what we were talking about. Someone putting people in there. Sagaki-senpai's memory."

Renju had been periodically shooting displeased looks at the Keiichi doll and shaking her leg a bit to get it off her whenever it started clinging. Not that she disliked Keiichi, but those damned dolls...

Tom's end of the conversation had her somewhat exasperated quickly (surely Tom owned more clothes than suits, a T-shirt, and his uniform?), but that may have just been due to general tension. She had quite a lot of that right now. Fortunately, Kozue provided a topic change that helped relieve a little of it--and worsen other aspects of it.

"Right." She took one of the dumplings, holding it in her chopsticks while she pondered. "Do you remember anything after that point, senpai?"

Tom looked toward Renju, and shook his head.

"I don't... actually even remember as much as you all saw. Right after... " Tom felt the sudden urge to glance away from Renju. Trying to remember the event, and also not think about the event was really hard. "...um... right after I left the school things went all fuzzy. When I came to in Paradise, I tried to escape, but I couldn't... uh... once I woke up in Paradise the second time, my shadow was gone. But... he had that big monitor he used to watch you go through the dungeon with. He'd left it running, and..." Tom now found the deep desire to star at the floor. He was glad he hadn't taken his hat off, and he pulled it down over his face.

"... It played every thing he said, and did. I think he wanted me to see it."

The look on Keiichi's face was...somewhat horror stricken.

"Wait," he asked, "so you mean that the shadow made you watch everything it did, in the real world?" He quirked an eyebrow, and turned to Renju.

"If that's true, and consistent across all Paradise victims...can you tell me exactly what happened to me before everyone went in after you?"

He didn't like to belabor the point, considering how bad she tended to feel about the entire thing. But if she COULD tell him...

The question was met with silence at first. The dumpling cooled in Renju's chopsticks. It was just one more thing she didn't like to think about, and didn't particularly want to confront.

She tensed, curling up slightly, almost imperceptibly. "I could," she replied, her voice tense and quiet. "But you all already know, more or less. I don't remember it very well..."

"You don't need to tell us," Kozue tried to say something reassuring—letting someone out of a tough spot was reassurance, right? "I mean, details. Don't worry about the details, but you remember some, but not all?"

She had polished off her own dumpling by this point, and was looking at Renju's with a slightly proprietary gaze. If she wasn't going to... No, focus, focus. "But I think that memory is the really important thing, first of all, because we might have the best representation of whatever is throwing people into Paradise, or at least proof that someone or something is doing this." As opposed to the unvoiced alternative, the accusation that Renju's Shadow had made: that everyone just ran in there themselves when life got too hard.

"It's more then that. It's..." Tom finally got the guts to look back at Renju.

"Forgive me Sonozaki-san. But... um.. " Tom looked toward Keiichi and Renju. "Up until Sonozaki-san, someone went into Paradise about every two weeks. Everyone else has said that they didn't willingly go in. Sonozaki-san is the first to admit that she went by choice. I know I didn't go in willingly, and if no one else is lying, that means that there is a killer, and that this is the first time the two week period went by without the killer attacking someone."

"I absolutely believe there's a killer," Keiichi asserted. "But if that's true, the fact is we now have two different facts as to what happened. Our shadows represent our repressed feelings. Based on that, judging from what Sonozaki-san has said, her shadow manifesting is easily explainable."

Keiichi went into the carton for his own dumpling, nibbling on it thoughtfully.

"We also know these places are gross exaggerations of the things people repress. The question then becomes how we get from thrown into Paradise to shadow manifesting." He gave the team a thoughtful look. "At this point, we're all trained. Unless we're thrown in without our phones, I imagine we could hold our own if we had to, or at least find our way out. There must be *something* preventing the victims from doing so when they get put inside."

Tom sat up and looked toward Keiichi.

"You're forgetting two things Ito-san. You remember when you found me in my dungeon? When I woke up after I was thrown into Paradise, I had my full wits about me, all my weapons, and my phone. The first thing I tried to do when I woke up was escape.

But it doesn't matter if you tried brute force, or stealth, trying to escape a world that is a physical manifestation of your own mind, bent on keeping you trapped is nearly impossible. After all there's no enemy that knows you better.

On top of that, every time a shadow is defeated, it transforms into the victims persona. Once your shadow manifests, you can't summon your persona.

Renju was not entirely convinced by this line of argument. Even if they'd said it themselves, who would actually admit to running into Paradise? Besides her, anyway Surely not all of the shock at her having done it was at the very concept of someone doing it... surely she wasn't the only one who'd had that idea...

But she wasn't going to argue that point. Not now. There was something else she could latch on to, though. Not something she thought she'd ever argue in favor of, but there it was.

"There must be some psychological aspect to it." She set the dumpling down, suddenly not hungry. "As far as we've seen, everyone who's been trapped so far was experiencing some sort of emotional distress at the time. And when the Persona leaves you..." She shivered involuntarily at the thought. She didn't remember the exact moment when Prometheus had vanished from her mind, but that emptiness was almost worse than anything else in the dungeon. "... the feeling intensifies. I don't think most people--" here she inclined her head slightly towards Tom "--are in any condition to try to escape."

"But there has to be a REASON the persona leaves us to begin with," he pointed out. "Various people have been in Paradise alone and not had that happen at various times. We know that it's because of repressed feelings, yes. But..."

He made a face as he finished off his dumpling.

"What point is too much repression? How does the killer know who to kidnap? I find it hard if not impossible to believe he's just been getting lucky time and time again with dumping people inside."

Kozue had been quiet for a while, lacing her fingers together and thinking. Thinking hard, in a sort of Winston the Bear think think think way—although there was no honey-related reward, which made the process harder.

"Is it an emotional thing? Or does the killer have some way of making it happen. Like. Um. Persona roofies?" She bit her lip, knowing that that just sounded stupid. "Or they can do it because they're not human," she continued. "Those... things, angel things, maybe? Or." Here was the thought that had been waiting half-breached in her mind for the words to come together and let it take a firm, solid grip.

"We know Shadows can come into the real world. What if it's actually people's own Shadows that are like... not throwing, but pulling them in?"

"Then we wouldn't see the killer, because our shadows would be able to manipulate our perceptions. That's a very good thought Kondo-san." Tom put a hand to his chin, and cocked his head to the side.

"Either way it seems obvious that the killer knows when our emotional states are good for a trip into Paradise, and can effect our shadows, and our personas."

"I don't think so."

Renju poked at her by-now very forlorn-looking dumpling. "At least, not the latter point," she corrected quickly. "It seems that aside from the lack of involvement from others--" it wasn't really like her to use euphemisms, but she was sticking solidly to this point even when evidence seemed to indicate otherwise "--my experience was similar to yours, senpai."

She paused, looking with slight dismay at the hole she'd worried in the side of the dumpling. She seemed to have this habit of playing with her food instead of eating it in situations like this (she recalled the anpan she'd poked a hole in after the team had split up, and vaguely remembered that she'd left it and that perfectly good crepe behind after that fiasco with Gendou). "Which may mean that what happens with the Shadow and the Persona is universal to anyone who goes in under the right circumstances. At the very least, it means that it's not directly tied to the killer. But what those circumstances are is harder to guess..."

"That's right Sonozaki-san. It makes the situation even more dangerous." Tom leaned back in his seat for a moment.

"That lends further evidence to the idea that the killer can target us during specific emotional states. That mans his targets are random, except for the fact that they are all persona users.

...Except Aomori, but I still believe that was because Aomori was in the killers way."

"Do we know that Aomori-sensei wasn't a Persona user? Maybe he was, too, and that's what's happening, this is all a scheme to get rid of people who could use Personas." Kozue mused, although her attention was more focused now on Renju's poor, half-destroyed dumpling. What a waste. She eyed it more closely, and then, "Sonozaki-senpai, are you going to eat that?"
