Who: Kozue and Kou.
What: An relationship deepening.
When: Before Obon.
Where: Places.
Why: Enchantment?

Kouchisei was, as told by his father, a good son. Ever since he'd been born he'd rarely cried and made messes inside the house but for the time he had escaped to the garden and trailed mud, except he believed some of that was rose-tinted because babies did cry, they smelled, and because they lacked the sentience of an adult they would not know what they were doing. Every year after, he'd spent time with his mother till father returned from work - and went to work on something else. Then his mother had fallen ill and the two males had become closer in the realisation of what they could lose. He had not told himself she would not mend. That she would never come home.

And as the time passed he had stopped fighting against the idea she would recover. Her headscarf with the flowers was still folded neatly and kept somewhere where his father had taken it, not thrown into the washbin or whatever. He had not let up with school or treated matters as a joke. People wasted their time; he would not fail to make something of himself.

She had been right, really, in insisting he made his father happy. Marriage was something that had been expected of him, so he was comfortable with it. He was not sure why they had taught him that if the family was strong, the country was strong. He had never liked being around large group of people. One woman had been what he had known and it had become what made him comfortable. He did, of course, like Kozue. He had not thought it was because he could not change, but rather that it was what he was supposed to do. What he knew was that his father wanted to be surrounded by people this Obon. He had spent most of the morning fretting about it and whether it would be more difficult to honour the dead than he had thought.

Really, what he had always needed was to feel comfortable. Kozue had been on the other end of the phone. He had doubted his father would need him on the Sunday so it had been a trying journey into the city. Buses with teenagers who played their music without headphones, girls who could not be quiet for once, and traffic lights that never seemed to change. He was in the most energetic place he had thought of - the city center. If he had felt nothing for Kozue, he wouldn't be here.

Her brow furrowed for a moment, and then she smiled; "Shopping? I like that plan, it sounds great." She shifted slightly. It was good that he'd decided (right?) because she didn't need to, it was work she didn't have to take upon herself, and it would make him happy. Being in control made him happy. Being in control was supposed to make people happy. (Right?)

She disguised the moment of processing (not doubt, processing) by looking around. "I—that's very considerate of you, Oubai-senpai. Thank you."

And it was, which galled and pleased her all at once. Here was more proof that she was cared for, that he thought she was special—even if he wouldn't express it in a way that Kozue knew was fool-proof and unquestionable—but here also was proof that being controlled was the purpose of their relationship. And if it was for this relationship… She smiled. Kozue had a talent for pretending nothing was wrong; she was no genius, but emotional deception was a skill the Kondo Children had learned early. "I'd really like to look for a pair of sunglasses. What do you think?"

Kouchisei would not understand if Kozue complained. He had done something kind for her - why would she be ungrateful? He knew that having everything done for you was relieving, and that those matters would not worry you as long as you were cared for. He cast his gaze around the mall, possibly knowing that he had done wrong at all. But it was right that he made decisions. He did not like thinking he was taking poor care of someone.

So, naturally, Kozue's deceptive smile and manner won the day. Or perhaps he did not feel enough emotion for her to care. He believed were strange and left it there.

"Sure. Whatever you want."

"Alright," she said, nodding, and looking around—where was the Trolley store? Did they sell those big movie star sunglasses? "Oh, let's start there," she picked the logo out of the mess of stores on the wall, and fussed with her hat slightly, resettling it on her head.

Because material goods would make it all better; happiness was a commodity just like purses, shoes, or candy and could be as easily purchased or given. And Kozue was going to go buy herself some happiness, please and thank you.

Kouchisei liked nice possessions. Mobiles, clothes, food. More so it was that he enjoyed owning them; the satisfaction that he had earned it had made him appreciate what he had. To give them to other people was to blind them; to make them happy that they would forget other matters or put them aside. He also knew no other way to express himself without keeping his distance.

He followed quietly, two steps behind so he could see everything, and because he was a lazy walker. His gaze fell on Kozue's wide-brimmed hat, and his right hand raised to pull it back, but he thought better and followed Kozue into the store.

"There's nothing here. Let's go," he said, making up his mind. These were girl clothes. It was, also, his poor attempt at a joke.

Kozue was already looking around, delighted, trying to decide what she should look at first: purses, glasses, wallets, what? Kou's words sunk in from somewhere behind her, and she turned around. She should have, in retrospect, been more guarded about the whole thing and accepted it, like she would have with Fumiko. (But Fumiko would never have taken her into a store; she got a quiet, criticism-free moment and a multi-purpose gift card.)

But she had been expecting—no, she didn't know. She didn't know at all, and the disappointment and hurt were evident on her pretty face. "Oh…"

Perhaps the fact Kou had made it past the accessories on the first rail had told Kozue he was not going anywhere. Purses, earrings, red strappy shoes [which looked expensive] and slippers. He was casting a glance at all the clothes. Red. Orange. Yellow. Not much was green or brown. It also, now he could see the excitement on Kozue's face, felt good to treat somebody who was not his father.

But then she lost that sunshine, and he could not tell if it was because of him or how much something was. He had been a jerk recently.

"I'll buy it for you," he offered. Money and security was what you married for. It was the right thing, was it not?

The hurt look was replaced, almost immediately, by a sort of expansion of surprise and joy that lit up her face, making her eyes (still browned by color contacts) huge and delighted; "You--you will? I--" She stumbled over her words for a moment, before she even knew what he was offering to buy. "I need to try them on first! Come on, let's—" she was still grinning ear-to-ear. "Let's get a sales lady and try them on, I was looking at the big black ones, with the sort of circle lenses, they're so fabulous," she realized she was babbling, and she stopped and turned to look at Kou.

It might have been a stupid impulse or a simple instinct that made her do what she did next: with any other boyfriend, it (and for Trolley sunglasses? more) would have been expected, natural, maybe almost requisite, but with Kou...? Still, Kozue was not thinking it through when, in her excitement, she threw her arms around him, with a still-gleeful, "Thank you! You're the best."

It was also a guaranteed way to get him not to go back on it when he saw the price tag.

Cumbersome and ugly glasses that hid your face showed no beauty. Kozue's face had been described as a beacon of light - that hair, her smile. He thought about it for a moment and realised he did not quite get it. His knees buckled under her weight for a moment, and if she had noticed it expression she might have thought was strange - he blinked, scrunched his brows, and raised his hands gently to act as a buffer.

Now, his cheeks were showing colour, and the embarrassment and discomfort and being intimately close came across in his tone of voice.

"Uh, thanks."

She stepped back, unbalanced, a bit confused by his reaction. He was red in the cheeks, sure, and that was expected with someone as restrained (prudish) as him, but he was also putting up hands to keep them apart, and looking displeased rather than… any of the range of emotions Kozue would have wanted or expected.

She cracked a small, sort of awkward smile, not sure what to say when your boyfriend of all people thought a hug was slightly alarming. But there were sunglasses to try on! Sunglasses! She had to know how they looked.

And the thing she wanted covered over any discomfort, any hurt pride, any doubt, very quietly and without Kozue even being entirely aware that it had happened.

"Ma'am, excuse me, may I see those?" She pointed; the salesclerk cast only a quickly dubious eye at the young pair before opening the counter to hand Kozue the glasses.

It was indicative of his nature that Kou immediately wondered why Kozue needed sunglasses.

He was already reaching into his purse with an expression of curiosity and dismay, that even though he felt no passion he cared enough about happiness and doing the expected, and that it would make him content. But they were expensive. He had to tell his father afterward otherwise his statement would look awful.

It was the eye from the assistant that drew his attention and drew him to the counter, content to merely look until the purchase was done and they could go. And he was aware of nothing at all.

"Are the frames the colour you want?"
