GRAVE CLEANING
[info]giantfruitbyday

Maeko was, she liked to think, a dutiful granddaughter. Every year since she'd started school she'd walked up this same path just as the air started to cool in the evening with the wooden bucket and bags filled with offerings and cleaned graves and arranged flowers and burned incence and spoken to people she'd never meet in her maiden tongue (maiden hands? The phrase didn't quite fit). Then she'd go home and light lamps in the appartment and put out a small feast and be careful not to let the whole thing burn down and generally succeed.

And as the years passed she'd stopped struggling under the weight and having to leave the bags behind and run back for them before someone took them or dragging the bucket along, losing most of the water before she reached the graves. Her arrangements of the flowers were still nothign appoaching artistic but they were carefully calculated, not haphazardly placed wherever. She didn't catch her fingertips or the sleeve of her yukata with the matches any more when she tried to light incence, nor did she lose flames to the wind over and over again until she ran out of matches. She didn't knock over lamps or accidentally make the wrong sign and change the whole meaning of the word and apologise over and over and spend the rest of August fretting over whether she'd caused offense because it was difficult to read someone's body language when they didn't have any.

She was, all in all, now pretty good at going through a festival she really had no right to be in.

She placed the bucket down by her grandfather's grave and started to work.

A rather tall man could be seen walking through the graveyard with his own bucket and bags, as well as, oddly enough, a sake bottle. Quite honestly, he doubted this was what he was supposed to do, but he had been coming down here for years now. He wasn't sure why (he never appreciated tradition or religion), but it just felt like something he should do. No one else could do it, and he doubted that his friend would appreciate spending Obon alone, so...

With his black hair and loose, dark clothing, it was rather hard to tell who he was. That was, of course, the point. He wasn't sure why he was hiding his identity. Maybe he just got tired of people staring at him and wanted an excuse to change, just once. Maybe he just wanted to make sure no one could know who he was doing this for. Either way...

Kanaye Satou blinked a bit as he approached his ex, briefly wondering what she was up to before noticing she was doing the same thing he was. Before he could help himself, he said "Maeko-san?"

Whoops.

Kneeling by the graves was uncomfortable and her yukata was going to get dirty. She always forgot to bring something to kneel on. Every year she reminded herself to bring something next year. And every year she forgot. At least she hadn't spilled any water this year, it would just be dust that could be easily brushed away.

She altered the flowers again and again, trying to work out if they looked passable this time. When she was adressed she excused herself in sign and looked up.

"...sorry, do I- oh, senpai?" Even with the benefit of having seen Kanaye with dark hair earlier when they visited Kou she didn't quite recognise him instantly. She used the disturbance as an excuse to stand, brushing off her knees. "Hello."

Kanaye felt extremely out of place. For one, his hair was dyed. And two? He was wearing the most covering clothing he could find, which was a trench coat and pants. His hair was messed up, and he was walking as quickly as he could. In comparison to Maeko, who was wearing what she was supposed to be wearing...

He shook his head and smiled. "Hello, Maeko-san. Dutiful and hard working as always, eh?" Checking the names on the graves, he noticed a distinct lack of "Akuba." "You're grandparents, eh?"

Realizing that she probably don't want to talk about it, he briefly panicked. "Uh, I'm sorry. I'm sure their deaths were very hard on you, and it was obvious. Sorry."

Maeko looked back at the graves and nodded. "From what I know of them they were both good people. They deserve at least this much respect."

She paused to alter the flowers quickly again, leaves were drooping uncomfortably close to the incense. Nobody would really appreciate burning offerings. She stood back up and nodded. "Yes, on my mother's side."

She shook her head when Kanaye started paniccing, raising one hand in what seemed to be a 'calm down' gesture. "It's okay, they died before I was born so I never actually knew them."

Kanaye nodded. "Ah. Well, I'm sure they appreciate it." Suddenly reminded of something, Kanaye looked around. "I just remembered, where's your parents? Do you have to do this by yourself?"

Kanaye calmed down a bit. "That makes two of us, then. I've never met my grandparents, either. My parental grandparents are dead and my maternal grandparents are in London, so I've never seen them."

"They went to the mainland, my father's family is over there and he needs a translator. I've been doing this since I started school." She nodded to herself, using the opportunity to go through her mental checklist of things she needed to get done. She had time, at least, the owner had taken a trip for Obon so there was no work for a few days.

"Really? I don't really know much about my father's side of the family." She thought. "Are you here for them?"

Kanaye smiled. "Well, you're very hardworking and dependent. I'm sure your parents are very proud of you." Kanaye briefly put his hand to his chin. "I have to admit, though, it seems kind of hard to do this when you're a kid. I mean, I didn't have any problems, but I only started when I was in middle school..." Kanaye shook his head. He already said too much.

"U-um, no." Kanaye laughed nervously. "They're buried somewhere else. I-I'm here for a...family friend!" He blurted out. "Yeah, a family friend. He doesn't have any living relatives, so I volunteered to wash his grave every obon." Proud of his on-the-spot-lying, he nodded. "Yeah."

"Thank you. But, um, dependant means something different." Maeko smiled as she made the correction, then laughed quietly, trying to make it clear she wasn't offended. "I used to screw it up all the time when I was a kid. Once time I just spent hours going back and fourth because I kept losing all the water before I made it all the way. And another time I set my sleeve on fire when I was trying to burn incense

"Really? That's kind of unusual. But I guess it makes sense if nobody else would." She thought. "Did you know him?"

"Oh, whoops! I meant dependable! I screw up like this all the time, don't worry!" Kanaye laughed. "Oh dear! That's a problem. Are you alright? Did you get burned?" Kanaye was suddenly worried, like a father over his children.

"Yeah, I knew him. He came over a lot." He sighed, depressed. "I liked him, but..."

Maeko shook her head, laughing again. "I put my arm in the bucket and then overbalenced and spilt it everywhere, didn't get hurt, though."

"Oh..." Maeko decided she probably didn't been to inquire about the 'but', given where they were. "I'm sorry for your loss. Are you okay?"

"Oh, that's good! I mean, I wouldn't care if you had a burn or something but someone might, right?" Kanaye laughed. "It's good you weren't hurt."

"I'm fine. I had 6 years to get used to it." He sighed. "I'm fine." He repeated, as if to show how fine he was. "I'm fine. You should get back to work. I can never remember his last name so I might take a while, unless you want to come with to chat?" Kanaye offered.

"I'll-" Maeko started, then shook her head. "Sorry, I was kind of in the middle of talking to them, so...besides, it wouldn't be proper for me to go with you. Unless you want me there then I'll wait by the buckets once I'm done, okay?"

Kanaye nodded. "Yeah, I do kinda want you there. So...wait, alright?" He smiled. "Have fun talking. I hope they know what a wonderful granddaughter they had!" Kanaye skipped off, giddy. He stopped after he almost spilled some water.

Maeko nodded, kneeling down again by the graves and apologising for the wait before resuming her silent conversation. (Would ghosts still be deaf? No point in taking risks.)

After rearranging the flowers from the upteenth time and leaving the offering and burning the incense and not setting herself on fire at all she headed back to return the bucket and waited with the buckets as she'd said she would.

"No worries!" Kanaye laughed. "I just kind of want somewhere there. Someone I can trust."

Nodding, he led the way through the graveyard, occasionally pausing to look around and walk another way. It was clear he didn't know which way to go. Eventually, however, Kanaye looked at a grave and sighed, sitting down.

The grave read "Fukimura, Daichi."

Maeko knelt down next to Kanaye in silence, trying to shut up the part of her brain that kept pointing out to her how improper this was. She couldn't just kneel by the grave of someone she didn't even know.

...someone she didn't even know and who wasn't related to her, anyway.

But she'd been given permission even if Kanaye didn't really count as family to give permission.

"...you okay?" She asked again after a few seconds.

"...Fine." Kanaye took the bottle of sake and opened it. Resisting the urge to drink it, he, instead, upturned it over the grave. The liquid splashed, and sunk into the ground. "He always liked good sake..." He said softly.

Taking the bucket, he upturned it over the grave, and started rubbing it down with a cloth he brought. "Hey, Daichi-sensei." He said softly. "I'm back. And I brought I friend."

Kanaye smiled. "I have friends now. It's great."

"Ah- That's not how you're supposed to-" Maeko cut her correction off, that was impolite. Maybe that was the western way of doing it, anyway. Instead, she scooted back a little to avoid the water.

She smiled at Kanaye's words, though. Being able to help without having to lie or make rediculous promises she'd only break anyway or quiet awkward attempts to calculate what to say was nice.

She felt she was expected to say something but had no clue what. She hadn't introduced herself to a grave since she was very small.

"H-Hello." She said, bowing. "It's nice to-" 'Meet' wasn't the right word. "-speak to you."

Kanaye blinked. "Not how you're supposed to...what?" He asked, confused. "That's how you clean the grave, right?"

Somewhat shocked at her talking to the grave, Kanaye smiled warmly. "Thanks, Maeko-san." Kanaye averted his eyes. "That...means a lot."

Turning back to the grave, he continued. "Life's pretty normal. Dad still wants me to take that job but he hasn't forced me to do anything since you..." He shook his head. "Well, it's nice. I moved to the dorms. Heck, I think I talk to dad more now."

"Oh, and you're not gonna believe this, but..." Kanaye laughed. "Well, never mind. I'll tell you when it's all over."

For once, he was enjoying obon.

"It's...It's not supposed to be literally cleaning unless the weather or some vandals made a mess. You're supposed to take one of the big spoons and pour a spoonful onto it." She thought. "But it's clean now! And that's good!"

She waited once that was said, not wanting to disturb the conversation any more than she already had.

Kanaye blinked. Then his mouth went into an "O" shape and he turned to the grave and bowed at it. "Sorry, Daichi-sensei! I didn't know! I'm bad at this, you know that! Please forgive me!" Kanaye sounded...desperate.

Kanaye quickly placed the flowers and lighted the incense, as if he was worried he'd run out of time or something. He sighed when he was finished.

Shaking his head, Kanaye stood up and offered a hand to Maeko. "Well, that should be enough. Shall we go to the festival, Maeko-san? I don't usually go, but..." Kanaye looked sheepish.

"I-I'm sure it's fine, though! It's not like there's rules against it or anything, it's just unusual." She shook her head. "I doubt anyone's going to be mad about it."

After some thought she took Kanaye's hand to pull herself up and dusted off her knees for about the fifteenth time today. Obon was swiftly becoming less the fesical of celebrating ancestors, more the festival of having really dusty knees.

"I still have to light the lanterns and prepare the offering..." She said, thinking. "But there's no work for the next few days so I have at least a little time."
