Kanaye nodded. "Yeah, I do kinda want you there. So...wait, alright?" He smiled. "Have fun talking. I hope they know what a wonderful granddaughter they had!" Kanaye skipped off, giddy. He stopped after he almost spilled some water.

Maeko nodded, kneeling down again by the graves and apologising for the wait before resuming her silent conversation. (Would ghosts still be deaf? No point in taking risks.)

After rearranging the flowers from the upteenth time and leaving the offering and burning the incense and not setting herself on fire at all she headed back to return the bucket and waited with the buckets as she'd said she would.

Kanaye waved to Maeko. "Yo, Maeko-san!" He smiled as he waved. "Glad to see you?" Walking up to her, Kanaye asked "Shall we go?"

"Okay," Maeko said, placing her bucket down and dusting off her yukata again. "I'm sorry for making you wait."

"No worries!" Kanaye laughed. "I just kind of want somewhere there. Someone I can trust."

Nodding, he led the way through the graveyard, occasionally pausing to look around and walk another way. It was clear he didn't know which way to go. Eventually, however, Kanaye looked at a grave and sighed, sitting down.

The grave read "Fukimura, Daichi."

Maeko knelt down next to Kanaye in silence, trying to shut up the part of her brain that kept pointing out to her how improper this was. She couldn't just kneel by the grave of someone she didn't even know.

...someone she didn't even know and who wasn't related to her, anyway.

But she'd been given permission even if Kanaye didn't really count as family to give permission.

"...you okay?" She asked again after a few seconds.

"...Fine." Kanaye took the bottle of sake and opened it. Resisting the urge to drink it, he, instead, upturned it over the grave. The liquid splashed, and sunk into the ground. "He always liked good sake..." He said softly.

Taking the bucket, he upturned it over the grave, and started rubbing it down with a cloth he brought. "Hey, Daichi-sensei." He said softly. "I'm back. And I brought I friend."

Kanaye smiled. "I have friends now. It's great."

"Ah- That's not how you're supposed to-" Maeko cut her correction off, that was impolite. Maybe that was the western way of doing it, anyway. Instead, she scooted back a little to avoid the water.

She smiled at Kanaye's words, though. Being able to help without having to lie or make rediculous promises she'd only break anyway or quiet awkward attempts to calculate what to say was nice.

She felt she was expected to say something but had no clue what. She hadn't introduced herself to a grave since she was very small.

"H-Hello." She said, bowing. "It's nice to-" 'Meet' wasn't the right word. "-speak to you."

Kanaye blinked. "Not how you're supposed to...what?" He asked, confused. "That's how you clean the grave, right?"

Somewhat shocked at her talking to the grave, Kanaye smiled warmly. "Thanks, Maeko-san." Kanaye averted his eyes. "That...means a lot."

Turning back to the grave, he continued. "Life's pretty normal. Dad still wants me to take that job but he hasn't forced me to do anything since you..." He shook his head. "Well, it's nice. I moved to the dorms. Heck, I think I talk to dad more now."

"Oh, and you're not gonna believe this, but..." Kanaye laughed. "Well, never mind. I'll tell you when it's all over."

For once, he was enjoying obon.

"It's...It's not supposed to be literally cleaning unless the weather or some vandals made a mess. You're supposed to take one of the big spoons and pour a spoonful onto it." She thought. "But it's clean now! And that's good!"

She waited once that was said, not wanting to disturb the conversation any more than she already had.

Kanaye blinked. Then his mouth went into an "O" shape and he turned to the grave and bowed at it. "Sorry, Daichi-sensei! I didn't know! I'm bad at this, you know that! Please forgive me!" Kanaye sounded...desperate.

Kanaye quickly placed the flowers and lighted the incense, as if he was worried he'd run out of time or something. He sighed when he was finished.

Shaking his head, Kanaye stood up and offered a hand to Maeko. "Well, that should be enough. Shall we go to the festival, Maeko-san? I don't usually go, but..." Kanaye looked sheepish.

"I-I'm sure it's fine, though! It's not like there's rules against it or anything, it's just unusual." She shook her head. "I doubt anyone's going to be mad about it."

After some thought she took Kanaye's hand to pull herself up and dusted off her knees for about the fifteenth time today. Obon was swiftly becoming less the fesical of celebrating ancestors, more the festival of having really dusty knees.

"I still have to light the lanterns and prepare the offering..." She said, thinking. "But there's no work for the next few days so I have at least a little time."

"Yeah, but..." Kanaye scratched the back of his head. "Well...Nevermind."

Kanaye blinked. "Oh. Well, I'll be going to the festival anyway. If you have time, you should come!" Kanaye nodded happily.

Kanaye started walking away, but turned to Maeko and smiled. "Bye, Maeko-chan!" He quickly left before she could get annoyed about the "-chan"

Maeko tried to rearrange things in her mind. Lighting the lanterns now was important because that was the order she always did things in, breaking the patten might be confusing or irritating to spirits. Or something. If she went back home now, lit the lamps and let them burn while she prepared and set out the offering then that would be about an hour. That should be plenty of time for spirits to find thier way home. She'd have to put them out if she left, she didn't want to leave something on fire in the appartment if she was going out. But she could light them again when she got back.

"I'll try to make it, I'll send you a message if I can-" She paused suddenly, unexpected honouriffic switch. "-chan?!"

But Kanaye was already too absent to be yelled at efficiently so she pouted for a few seconds instead, then turned back to the grave.

"I'm sorry for the disturbance. I'm glad we could speak."

And with that she bowed to the grave a final time and then left.
