Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:kozue, tom

Who: Tom, Kozue, and Max
What: A walk
Where: Tom's dorm
When: After Kozue's Journal entry
Why: More gaijin discussion!

She had distinctly said he was nuts. It didn't seem like a fair description. Crazy people aren't capable of distinguishing their perspective from reality. Tom knew the differences, for the most part. He just didn't pay them much attention.

Either way, Kozue seemed to take issue with his more extreme stances, and Tom wanted to keep his friends. So when he prepared for her arrival, Tom tried to figure out how to look as normal as possible. He carefully combed his usually messy hair. He picked his outfit carefully. No suit, or school uniform. No knives hidden under his jacket. (They were hidden under his pants, strapped to his leg. But that was just for emergencies!) And then he sat on his bed, petting Max and waiting for his friend to show up.

Kozue rapped on the windowpane.

Mostly in case the door was still booby-trapped, which she strongly suspected, but also because this was where Tom let Max in and out, anyway. After a moment, her raised arm descended, and Kozue herself appeared in Tom's window. Or, at least, the top portion of her head, and her bright, rapidly moving eyes, did. She did a quick search, looking for Sagaki, Max, or the both of them.

Her eyes were also… unusually colored. She had distinctly not put in her contacts before leaving her dorm; if Tom wanted to talk about family situations, he could talk about family situations.

Max was the first person at the window, tail wagging with excitement. Tom appeared shortly afterward and slid the window up. He looked at Kozue and blinked.

"Wow... your eyes are really pretty... I mean... I hadn't really realized that...uh... Um hang on."

He stepped away from the window to grab Max's leash. Then returned clipping a collar to the dog and hopping out of the window to stand next to Kozue. He set Max on the ground and the dog procceeded tostretch both his front and back legs. Tom however, turned to his companion.

"Uh... hi Kondo-san."

"Hi," she responded, having taken a few steps away from the window to let Tom and Max out easily; she smiled, although she was distinctly less breezy and confident in that expression. It was a stupid thing, to actually believe that keeping the color of her eyes a secret made her life easier—it really didn't, not if Misaki was anything to go by, but she'd known it as unquestioned truth for a very long time.

She rocked backwards a little on her heels. "You think so?"

She, at least, felt the topic needed no clarification.

Tom nodded, and a smile crept across his face.

"I mean, mine really are kind of grey and dead, I didn't know yours were actually... blue. Maybe it stands out because it's different, but I like it."

He turned and tugged on the leash so that Max would follow, the small dog needed no encouragement, and was soon prancing in front of both of them.

She slipped her hands into her pockets; "Thanks," she said after a moment, smiling a little. "Still, they really do stand out, and just because you don't think they're look dead or creepy," her hands dug even deeper. "Well, they're just unusual."

She knew she oughtn't to have been so uncomfortable; after all, Tom had apparently had just as much trouble as her, when it came to things like that. People had probably said things just as bad—maybe worse. They weren't his own family—they didn't care about him somewhere, deep down. "I'd really rather it not stand out all the time, though."

Max took the opportunity to smell everything as they walked. Despite the fact that he walked down the same road almost every day. Tom on the other hand paid attention to his friend.

"I understand that. Lord knows that I like to avoid being seen most of the time. People are far more themselves when they think they are alone. I like it when people are more themselves."

Tom paused.

"Not that... I like... hide in the bushes and watch people... all the time."

Kozue laughed; it was a fond recollection now, but god had it been annoying at the time. Cockblocked—well, you get the picture—by teen detective jumping out of the bushes, really? Her life. Her liiiife.

"I don't believe you." She continued snickering. "I mean. I just don't need to be that weird blond girl with the foreign demon eyes when I'm wearing my pajamas and going to the combini for snacks at four am. It's a chore." She looked down. "You hadn't actually asked why I wear contacts. I shouldn't be babbling about it. How are you doing? What did you want to talk about?"

"No really I..."

Tom realized that "I don't believe you" was not directed at his bush habits. He frowned slightly and began walking.

"You shouldn't have to. Hide I mean. You're... smart and perceptive. You're nice to people, when you don't have to be. You don't hate me because I can't fit in..."

Tom let out a sigh.

"You have too many good qualities for people to harass you just because your eyes are a different color. It's stupid."

He shoved his hands in his pockets and hung his head. Max tried to tug against the leash as it was now stuck in Tom's pocket.

"Not that me saying so will stop them, I just... yeah. You didn't ask, but it's mostly what I wanted to talk about."

He walked in silence for a second before turning to look at her,

"I wasn't going to kidnap you. I just... if you'r ein a bad situation... I... I don't like sitting by when my friends are in trouble."

"I was pretty sure you weren't going to kidnap me, but thanks." She chuckled—laughter made it a bit easier to handle the situation. And, speaking of situations, "And really, it's my family. This is a way better situation than I've been in in years. I don't live with my Grandmother. I only have to see her now and then, not even every month, and we never talk on the phone or anything. I don't know why… well, you and Satou-senpai both seem to think it's some horrible thing."

It wasn't horrible. It was her life.

"I appreciate the flattery, though."

"I don't think it's a horrible thing. Well... a really horrible thing." Tom tugged on the leash to get Max to move with them, as the puppy had stopped to sniff intently at a random spot on the ground.

"I'm just... I guess I'm used to a family that doesn't care. I mean it's obvious that not everyone has the same situation as I do, but I still don't have any experiences to base my impression off of. So I still think of family as something you can just walk away from when you want to."

Kozue shook her head. "I wouldn't want to walk away from my family if I could, Sagaki-san. They're my family." She laced her fingers. "I mean, they're—I don't know how to best explain it. I love them."

She looked down at Max and laughed, watching him try to pull towards that one spot he'd been sniffing at. "What's so interesting there, huh, Max-kun?"

Max ignored Kozue, and pulled until Tom let him get to his spot. Then he sniffed the ground, and pawed at it.

"I get what you're saying... in an abstract sense." Tom let out a breath, and then looked at Kozue. He couldn't think of anything else to say. He felt like he should, but he just had trouble with the idea. His friends had saved him, had proved how much they cared. His family by contrast... hadn't. It was all really confusing for Tom.

"I understand, you had a different situation than I did, growing up," she said, and then, hearing herself say it, realized how totally insensitive that sounded. What, like his family hated him? Only, it really seemed like parts of his family did detest him, or at least couldn't care in the least little bit. She looked down and let out a slow breath.

"That wasn't what I meant. I just. It's okay, it's very sweet that you're concerned, but I have it covered. I'm a big girl."

Tom nodded, and met her gaze.

"I trust you Kondo-san. Not only to handle yourself, but to get out of a situation if you can't handle yourself. Or at least ask for help." He let out a breath and a look of contemplation crossed his face.

"Alright Kondo-san, I think we've had enough of a heart to heart talk right? We should continue our bonding by getting milkshakes." He gave her a soft smile, then tugged on Max's leash to go in the right direction.

"I found a small shop nearby, it only has a few employees, so I had enough time to investigate all of them. The background checks weren't thorough, but I'm confident that they don't work for any of our enemies. And you get to watch them make the shakes, so we'll know if they try to put anything in it."

What started out as a smile grew into a full-fledged laugh as Tom explained exactly why he was willing to get a milkshake and how much effort he had gone through to…wow, Sagaki was crazy but far too adorable in his craziness sometimes.

"That sounds great, senpai. And thank you."
