Who: Members and interested parties.
What: Anti-Bullying Club.
Where: Empty classroom?
When: Monday lunchtime.
Why: It's a club!

Nanakamado's Anti-Bullying Club was in session. The door opened silently and hung slightly ajar.

Kouchisei was outside. His warm palm cusped the metal door handle; he began turning it the wrong way. He stopped - what was he doing? Children were testing a silly rumour all over the school. He found such childish thoughts insulting. He dropped the handle and cast left and right. An empty corridor: good.

And that club. People told him to take it easy. It wasn't advice that worked. He didn't want to feel any worse.

So what was he to do here?

Since there weren't any teachers around and so she could get away with it, Maeko was sat on a desk as she ate her lunch, swinging her legs. She noticed the door move but not open and slid off the desk, putting the half-eaten anpan back into a paper bag.

"Hello?" She asked, openning the door and sticking her head out.

Kou peered into the room, seeing Mako, and then checked the corridor - left and right - to see if they were alone.

He sighed. He was building a proper adult life; good grades, the right friends, and a nice place at university. He thought about how good club membership would look on his resume and entered.

"Interested student here, wondering if you've got any more room."

Maeko was disappointed. She'd been hoping it was someone with a problem.

She couldn't very well say the club didn't have room for any more members when she was the only one in the room, much as she'd have liked to. Oh well, maybe he'd be like the other members and show up once then never come back.

"I think we're still accepting members, yeah." She said, pretending to be thinking about it. She'd managed to put people off by telling them she didn't know before. It was only a bit more extra work to go talk to the counselor "I think you'd need to talk to the counselor about it, he's the one who runs this club."

"Ah. Nobody's here right now, though. Usually people come to talk about problems but some days no one does. It's nice, I guess it means everything's good."

There were no members; what thoughts occured to question this advice he didn't say, but he'd already been. And Maeko was a good girl. He was enjoying this short conversation, smiling - but attempting to keep a quiet dignified air.

"Why are people telling me I should see the counseler?" He sighed; he'd seen that man enough these past weeks. "... I just want to join."

"Huh? It's because he runs the club." Maeko said, trying to decide whether or not to go back to her anpan. She decided against it. It would be rude to eat while talking. "I mean I guess if you just wanted to be part of it you could just stay in here. I wouldn't kick you out and if any of the other members showed up they wouldn't know but if you're wanting to put it on a job application or something you have to talk to him to make it official."

Kou pushed up his glasses, thinking he'd need to go shower. He had to get rid of the dirt from PE before the day was over.

"... So the club's not... I'll have to go back, I suppose."

Whenever someone looked at him, his glance twitched. "Regardless of whether I join or not, I have to focus on my studies."

It was a good day. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and Reizo Shirai had just pinched a decent amount of pocket money off of a few upperclassman. The looks he’d been given afterwards amused him, but the mention of an anti-bullying club sparked interest. So he made a bee-line to the room. Well, after asking someone just where the hell it was.

Reizo stepped out of the hall and into the anti-bullying room, corners of his lips upturned into a lazy smirk. So this was the “headquarters” of the people who would, presumably, be involving themselves in his affairs for the next few years. Fantastic. The smirk grew as he took in the room, head swiveling around, and when his attention finally landed on the girl, he let out a short bark of laughter. He let out another, louder one when he laid eyes on the boy.

“Anti-bullying club, huh? You senpai sure are noble. Lookin’ out for your schoolmates like that.”

Senpai. Noble. Schoolmates.

Those words shocked Kouchisei's mind. He liked to think he was noble - being a mature adult - but Reizo had said it. Why did he have to be so intimidating? How could he return the cynicism without annoying the stronger man? Was there anything to those rumours? He turned his body, and moved to be out of a direct range. He wouldn't retort sharply; his body language was enough. Even if it was obviously nervous.

"Some of us like to do good things," he muttered.

He realised what he'd said and closed his mouth. He looked down at the floor in self-admonishment. That had been childish.

"How kind of you to think so, Shirai-san." Maeko said with a smile. Even in just the last few months she'd heard a lot about this boy's reputation.

The cynicism behind the words was not lost on Maeko and even if it had been Kou's actions would have confirmed it. Still, it wasn't like she really cared.

"So why are you here? Are you wanting to join too?" She paused and twisted her head. "Oh, or maybe you have a problem?"

Great, another smart-mouthed girl. Like he didn’t have enough of that to deal with when putting up with Ikeda. Still, the grin on his face grew as he walked over to the desk Maeko was at and leaned inwards, head canting to the side as he crowded in on the girl.

“A problem?” He asked, feigning puzzlement. “Now that you mention it, I got some people spreading nasty rumors about me.” Sighing, he pushed away from the desk and took a seat atop the one closest to it.

“How terrible is that?” He asked Kouchisei.

"Social bullying is just as bad as physical."

If Reizo was going to be aggressive, the best thing to do was ignore him, Kouchisei thought. His younger-classman would go somewhere where people would listen to him.

Stepping back, Kou looked out the window. He was facing Maeko but not directly looking at her.

"... Well, what needs doing first?"

Toshimi thought that the idea of an anti-bullying club wasn't a bad one. Certainly she didn't approve of bullying. But it seemed that the main function of the club was for students to talk about their problems. Toshimi wasn't really the type of person who did that--for her, talking about problems and not solving them just made things worse. Still, Yamada from the baseball team had asked Toshimi to accompany her to the club that day, and Toshimi hadn't been able to think of a polite way to refuse. She hadn't known that Yamada had any issues with bullies. Toshimi wondered if this was Yamada's way of telling her that she was too aggressive.

She peeked into the classroom, but didn't see her teammate there. "Pardon the intrusion," she said to the students already there. "Is Yamada-san here today? Yamada Kaori-san?" It appeared not. Toshimi smiled politely, but felt awkward. She'd really only come for Yamada's sake, and now she didn't know how to leave without seeming callous.

"Erm, I don't think so." Maeko said, thinking. The name wasn't familiar. She was glad for the distaction, though. She was managing not to act it too much but she'd be lying if she said Reizo wasn't intimidating. "It was just me until everyone else showed up. Should she be here? I don't think she's a member."

"My mistake," said Toshimi. She supposed that Yamada had asked her to come with her so that she wouldn't have to face new people alone. Apparently it hadn't occurred to Yamada that if she didn't show up, then Toshimi would be in the same position. Still, if Toshimi left and she showed up later...then Yamada would think that Toshimi would be the one standing her up. And then there was the issue of getting out of this situation politely...

The easiest solution was just to stay there. She wouldn't necessarily have to participate, right? "She told me she was going to be here today, so is it all right if I wait here for here?" She stepped into the room and sat down. "If you'll excuse the interruption."

Reizo sneered at Kou, jumped to his feet and strolled over to the smaller boy, before taking hold of the collar of his shirt and jerking him 'round roughly to face him. “Ignorin’ yer kohai ain’t something a good senpai should do,” he snarled, eyes cut into a glare as he stared down Kou. Reizo loomed over the other, the challenge in his face matched by his posture, he seemed coiled and ready and move at the slightest provocation. Or at least until it all drained out of him when another girl appeared at the door.

He let go of the boy when Toshi’s head popped around the corner and took a seat again, crossing his arms and watching the new girl dourly. Maybe he’d be able to see what the hell the anti-bullying club did now.

Kouchisei's first response was to express his trepidation – terror, concern – by breathing heavily, looking away from Reizo.

He was not altogether wise, towards himself and other people. Remembing his mother, her voice came to mind and said his maturity hadn't yet materialised. He liked to think he was building a new life for himself that she would have wanted. Working harder like they both wanted. Was he a fool? No. He knew what he was doing. He knew why he wanted to do it, and it would open opportunities.

The man question was how did one build a life for themself? He missed his mother, and she had always been a part of it.

"Why the hell are you telling us to listen to you when it's obvious we'll say what you want to her to preserve our necks?" he asked Reizo.

Talking was difficult. He lacked the space to breathe and the fear Reizo inspired had gotten underneath his skin. So his tone had been faster and nervous than most.

“Tch,” was all the delinquent said, evidently more interested in the new girl. He glowered at her from across the room, wondering what she might think of all that. Maybe she’d run out screaming if he glared hard enough.

The glare grew harder as Kouchisei’s remark ran through his head. Why shouldn’t they need to watch their damned mouths around him? He was going to the boss here, like his dad was out there. It was training. Every scared expression, every whimper and bruise and broken bone he produced was just building him up for his real life-- he’d be better than his dad, he’d be the most feared head any organization had ever had, dammit. He was MADE for it, afterall.

It’s not like he could be friends with these idiots anyway, they were from a different world. Dad had always said he never needed friends, just underlings. But he had grown up with “uncles”, obvious dear friends to his father who sometimes played with him, and even sometimes disappeared.

He realized he was frowning and looked up, mentally shaking off the rumination and getting back to the matter at hand: glaring at Toshimi. A part of him wanted to storm out of the room, and preferably hit something, but it might look like he’d been run out..

“Hell’s your name?”

"Uh..." Toshimi wasn't sure what she'd walked into. Was the anti-bullying club just a euphemism, and what really happened there was straight-up bullying? She'd have to warn Kaori about that next time they spoke. Either way, she didn't know what she'd done to earn the large first-year's scornful glare. "I-if there's something going on here that I shouldn't be interrupting, I can go look for Yamada-san somewhere else," she said uncomfortably. But the glare continued. Toshimi averted her eyes.

She thought that she should probably have said something like, That's awfully rude language to use with your senpai, or When you ask for someone's name, you're supposed to give your own name first, and without realizing it she gave Reizo a resentful stare for a second as she thought this. But she didn't belong in this room and she didn't want to rock the boat. Looking away again, she mumbled, "I'm Class 2-B's Nawanaka Toshimi."

The look he was giving her grew harsher when she responded in kind, lips pressed into a hard, terse line. He folded his arms to keep himself from slamming a fist down onto the desk, and his expression broke into a smirk when the girl finally looked away. He glanced around the room and while the girl with the longer hair hadn’t sufficiently been cowed, it seemed the other two had-- well, they had in his opinion.

Sighing, he pushed off the desk and stood once more, seemingly unable to figure out what the hell he wanted to do with his body.

“No,” he started, wide grin overtaking his face. That stupid niggling doubt that ONE comment from the four-eyes was fading, and the boy was starting to feel better again, demonstrated well in the grin that displayed too many teeth. “Nothin’ is going on here, just a little disagreement.” The threatening tone he’d adapted melted away from his voice, leaving something once again light and airy.

“I’m Class 1-B’s Shirai Reizo.”

He paused for a second, the grin dissolving into an easy smirk.

“And you’ll be seeing a lot more of me if you join the club. Lucky you.”

Rather than watch her classmates eat, Shiori decided to wander the school. It was her own fault she had no lunch today; she had forgotten to grab her own, and it seemed like such a waste of time to stand in line for food. The school day was almost over, and she figured she could make it until the end of the day.

And then totally go home and gorge herself. Oh, man, she was drooling already!

Though Shiori could still hear voices filtering from the classrooms, she slowed to a stop in front of one room. The number seemed familiar - was there a club here or something? It wasn't band, but...

Oh! The anti-bullying club! Right!

Opening the door, Shiori took a step inside, already asking, "Hey, is the club still open? I-"

She stopped, seeing two familiar faces and one that was vaguely familiar.

"Ah, Nawanaka-san! Oubai-san! So this is where you hide at lunch!" she exclaimed, taking a step further into the room.

To the other boy, she squinted at him for a moment before widening her eyes.

"Oh! I think I've had detention with you before!" she said, smiling brightly.

"Huh?"

Kouchisei wasn't sure who he was talking to. Had Reizo really lost interest in him and focused it on another? He gritted his teeth at the emptiness in his stomach. Shiori-chan wasn't right in that he hid to eat. But what if he took his lunch and Reizo wanted it? He'd have to be more careful the next time they spoke.

He couldn't respect Reizo as he was, being a thug and a bully. Reizo was childish, aggressive and arrogant, but it was what backed up his arrogance that made him dangerous. But he couldn't erase who he was so easily.

"Yes, well, only till Reizo-san had an insane idea that will never work," he said brusqly.

Reizo snorted and rolled his eyes as Shiori meandered in. He recognized her almost instantly, who wouldn’t given the way she stood out? Was this eyesore also part of this damned club? Maybe it was just an odd day and everyone had problems crop up all at once. Seeing her reminded him vaguely of detention-- did he have it today? Probably. He didn’t go most of the time and none of the teachers bothered him for it.. He supposed just giving him detention might be harrowing enough. The thought almost made his chest puff out.

He tore his attention away from the girl and back to Kouchisei at the remark, cocking an eyebrow and giving the older boy an incredulous look. He didn’t look so ready to break something now, maybe the -san bit had done the trick.

“Whaddaya mean crazy idea? My ideas are all fantastic.”

"You're a man without, and I mean this helpfully, the patience to be in this club. Believe me on this, your energy would be better spent on baseball."

He was speaking in a polite tone he could never have imagined using. Reizo made it necessary. Thinking of him made him appear mildly irritated - hadn't he strutted around enough today? The anger made him scowl and his glasses slid down.

Kou pushed them back up. "Wakanata-san. Is there something you need? We're busy."

The unbelieving look on his face only grew, then something seemed to click and the boy started laughing. It was an .. odd sight, to see the large boy hugging his stomach in laughter.

“You think I was going to join this stupid club? I thought you glasses guys were supposed to be smart.”

He actually slapped his knee at that, laughing a little harder.

Blinking at the abrupt mood shift from her classmate, Shiori rose her hands in an attempt to placate him. Her eyes flickered over to her detention mate before going back to Oubai. Something had obviously gone between them; she didn't need to have witnessed what she did to know that.

"Whoa, sorry!" she exclaimed. "I thought I heard this was an open club, but I'm probably mistaking this for something else."

Or not. If she went back to the room now, she'd probably settle down to draw so she could take her mind off of lunch... or her lack of one. By the time Oubai and Nawanaka came back, Shiori would probably be absorbed with the paper. As she usually was when in class.

Taking a step back towards the door, she smiled brightly. "I'll see you guys in class then! And you in detention-" she nodded to the boy with the dyed hair.

Though she smiled, inwardly she was frowning. Was this another incident where she could have sworn she heard something right, but turned out to be wrong about it? Shiori could have waved it off as an honest mistake if it didn't seem to happen so much.

Then again, maybe she was just slower than most. Her grades certainly reflected that.
