Entry tags:kanaye, maeko

Who: Maeko, Kanaye
What: ~important conversation~
Where: Kigakiga
When: Midday-ish. After everything.
Why: Maybe someone'll actually get somewhere with issues.

Maeko had, for a reason that will be confirmed when DSM gets back to me about it, managed to get Misaki safe or something.

She 'd stayed at Kigakiga after her shift was done (territory again. If they were going to have this sort of conversation then she wanted some comfort she could cling to.), bought herself some strawberry mochi icecream and texted Kanaye.

Free now. At Kigakiga.

Kanaye shuddered. "Owch. Sucks to be her. I'd hate to go home to people like that."

He sighed. "Maeko, your persistence and desire to not give up is the reason I asked you out. It's a good quality. But you take it too far, sometimes. You can't just WILL your body not to pass out. You have to take care of it, and that means sleeping. I really don't want to have to ask Misaki to make sure you sleep, and I do NOT want to have to do it myself."

"It's not really the best place for her to be but...It's safter than her brother's place yould be. His shop's a business and she's spoken about it a lot before so it'd be easy to find. Residencial places are at least a little more difficult to look up. It's just for a few days, she should be fine..."

Maeko shook her head. "I can. I just need to try harder. And it's not like I'm not sleeping at all. I was just really worried for the last few days so I did the homework instead..."

Kanaye nodded and sighed. He was going to have to apologize to Misaki for this... "That's true. Well, we can't stop that now, right? Just gotta go with the flow."

He sighed once again. "Maeko. If you try too hard, you're just gonna burn yourself out." Kanaye smiled. "Get some sleep, Maeko. Or else I'll have to help with that."

"...yeah. I'm sure she'll be okay." Maeko repeated, nodding to herself. "She managed it for years before. A few days can't be that bad."

"I'll be fine." She waved one hand, squeezing Kanaye's with the other and giggling a little at a joke she, for once, had not missed. It wasn't really funny but that was the fight response, right? She looked at the last mochi again, wondering if she should offer it to Kanaye just in case and then remembered what he'd said at the start of the conversation. She'd been focussing completely on how she was doing, how selfish! "You're doing okay, right? You said you were feeling sick before..."

"Yeah, but...Leaving her with people that look down on her and hate her..." He sighed. "I feel sorry for her, even when she does ruin our dates."

Kanaye smiled. "I'm fine. I was just worried sick about you. No need to worry about me."

"She'll be okay." It was almost as if she was trying to convince herself.

"I'm fine, see?" Maeko said, waving her arms around. Waving your arms around was, of course, the best way to demonstrate being fine. "Please don't make yourself ill over something like that!"

She held out the last of the mochi. "Here, I ate nearly all of them, so..."

Kanaye nodded wearily.

"The same goes to you, Maeko. Hypocrisy is never good. Just take care of yourself." He smiled. "Misaki-san is fine."

He took it with a smile. "Thanks, Maeko." He started eating slowly.

"I will. You don't need to worry." Maeko said, nodding again.

In a way she thouht was sneaky but really wasn't (there wasn't really a sneaky way to do it) she moved her chair so she was sitting next to Kanaye rather than across from him. In an equally sneaky way, she took his free hand in both of hers, squeezing it. She steeled herself, waited until he was done eating and asked the question that had been bugging her since before when they'd been exchanging messages.

"...that person you mentionned before." She said, squeezing Kanaye's hand harder as she spoke, her voice falling to a whisper. "Who was it?"

Kanaye sighed, looked uncomfortable for a bit, and then took a deep breath. "Well, you are my girlfriend. I don't want to keep secrets from you."

He leaned in close to her. "I...don't want to talk about it, but...He was more of a father then my father was." He hugged her and sighed. "Is that alright?"

"It's fine. And it's okay if you don't want to talk about it..." She returned the hug, tighter than she might have normally. "I'm sorry, it's not like it's any of my business so...but it's something I was always scared of. So I'm sorry it happenned. Nobody should have to...I'm sorry."

Kanaye just squeezed back. "Don't worry about it." He said softly. "It is your business. You're my girlfriend, right?" He smiled softly. "Don't worry about it, Maeko. All in the past. I have you now, right?"

"I guess..." Maeko said, leaning into Kanaye and not even bothering to fake a smile. "It's- I don't know how it would feel. But it's something I've been afraid of all my life. So if you ever do want to talk I'll try to understand..."

Kanaye leaned back into order to smile widely at Maeko, though his eyes were still sad. "Thanks, Maeko. I'll come to you first if I ever want to talk about it."

Maeko didn't catch the eyes but she knew how easy smiles were to fake. She pulled closer to Kanaye again, kissed his cheek and then moved away.

"I'm sorry. If I'd known there was something like that I'd have never brought it up before. It was insesitive to complain when I didn't know..."

Kanaye blushed a bit and pecked Maeko on the lips in return, smiling genuinely. "Don't worry about it, Maeko. I had to tell you eventually, right? You didn't know, it's not your fault."

Changing the subject, Kanaye continued. "If you're afraid of your parents dying, I guess you love them a lot, huh? I know your father is deaf, but that's it. Do you mind telling me about your family?"

"...that wasn't really what I meant but..." Maeko trailed off. It was the same reason she didn't understant Kou's wanting to be a doctor. Being responsible ensuring whether someone lived or died wasn't something she could even comfortably imagine.

"Of course I do." She said, smiling. "Dad's an architect and Mom's his translator. We used to have a cat but then the appartments banned pets so we had to give it away."

Kanaye blinked. "What did you mean, then? Do you not like your parents or something?"

He nodded a bit. "Ah. Shame. I like cats. Was it cute?" Kanaye asked, smiling. "I would think so. Most animals take after their owner, after all."

"Huh? Of course I like them! It's just not really what I was talking about. Nevrmind, it's not such a big deal."

"I guess she was kind of cute. She was little and white with brown paws and one brown ear. She liked my dad a lot more than it liked me of my mom. He was really annoyed that we had to give her away."

Kanaye shrugged in confusion. "If you insist, Maeko." He seemed to be saying stuff like that a lot lately.

Kanaye smiled. "That sounds adorable! She did take after you." He sighed. "I can see why. I love animals."

"Eh? My ear isn't brown, is it?" Maeko's first reaction was to raise her hands to her ears to check. As if she could tell colour by touch. "No. That's stupid." She said eventually, lowering her arms again.

"Really? Have you ever had a pet?"

Kanaye chuckled. "No, no, no, Maeko. I meant you're as cute as a kitten." He smiled. "Maybe even more so."

He shook his head. "Nah. The servants didn't want to clean up after one, and they refused to believe me when I said I would."

Oh. That made slightly more sense. "Thanks, I guess..."

She thought. "Oh, that's unfortunate. Hmm.." She paused, taking Kanaye's hand again. "We could go to the zoo or something sometime during summer!"
