Entry tags:maeko, misaki

Who: Maeko, Misaki
What: Talking, protecting, watching the fireworks from windows.
Where: Tenth floor of an appartment block opposite the skypark.
When: After letters.
Why: Because Maeko is crazy and paranoid.

Maeko hadn't been lying when she'd said the appartment where she'd lived with her mother and father was small. There really wasn't room for three people.

Misaki had been intructed by both Maeko (in hushed voice) and Michio (in sign that seemed much louder by comparison despite its silence) to sit down and read or something and be quiet while Maeko was at work. She'd been left in Maeko's room.

And it was a very good job that she wasn't claustrophobic.

The room was very pink, with wallpaper involving the misadventures of white cartoon rabbits with balloons and glow-in-the-dark plastic stars on the ceiling. It was almost the exact size of the single futon that was right now kept in the small wardrobe at the far end. A desk and chair of sorts were just in front of the wardrobe, two sheets of wood surface hinged to the wall that could be folded up and down. There were no windows because there were no outside-facing walls. Rumpelstiltskin had been left in the doorway, sat on top of a few books.

And it was completely silent.

Maeko was due back in a few minutes.

'I'm not tense, I'm just tired from work.'

Which was mostly true. This place was a little stressful but nearly all of her current anger came from Misaki's assumption that she'd be able to master the only thing she was any good at within a few days and her inability to keep her nose out of other people's business and reacting with passive agression when asked to stop.

She stopped, never sure how she was supposed to respond to things like that.

'That's nice.'

'Oh, I see. What did you have to do?' Misaki put down the brush and smiled at Maeko. She wasn't sure what to make of the, 'That's nice.' Normally when someone said they loved you, you'd say you'd love them back. With Maeko she wasn't sure if she was just being her normal self or....

She wrote down a quick question.

'Would you like to stay over by my brother's shop some time this summer? Unless of course he's having it checked out, which he might be. In that case, would you like to stay at my house? I'm sure my father wouldn't mind. Mother has a meeting some time this summer and well, I figured that would be the best time to go visit.'

'Nothing out of the ordinary. It's much busier in summer is all.'

'We'll discuss it once we know it's safe. Your brother's shop is a business, it'll be much easier to find you there.'

'What exactly do you do for your dad. I know translating but, is it that you're translating?

Okay fair enough. By the way Maeko-chan, can I at least, when your father isn't working or something, go and sit out of the room and read. I really like your room but, it's hard to concentrate for me when there are no windows.

Also, can we talk when we're watching the fireworks in the hallway?'

'I translate telephone calls and wake him up if a fire alarm goes off at night. I'll be attending a meeting in a few days, too, to be his voice in person.

I doubt there'd be any times like that. He only ever stops working to sleep and the rule is that everyone sleeps when he does. Even at mealtimes he just takes his food to his desk.'

It was clear where Maeko got her obsessive need to work from, at least.

'Yes. But quietly.'
