Who: Detective Mokoto Shirow and 2nd year class
What: Investigation into the death of Sato Kei and the disapperence of Oubai Kou
Where: Classroom 3-F at the School
When: Afternoon
Why: Because she's been assigned the case.

Mokoto got out of the black car as her partner got out of the passengers side. Looking around the grounds she pulled on her shades so that it was easier to see. Hokkaido was so very different then Tokyo had been. Brighter sun, or it felt like it, and the weather was a bit cooler by nature. She'd seen enough of the big city to know that it wasn't going to be easy getting along with the change of weather here in the winter.

She glanced around and looked at her partner, "So this is the school. Well off students huh?"

He gave a nod as she headed for the enterence where a teacher was waiting to greet her. Mokoto pulled off her shades and smiled at him, "Pleased to meet you, Detective Shirow of the Iburi metropolitan police department. I'm here to interview the students in regard to the case that I'm working."

Mr. Aomori was a large man but his face was clearly gentle. Miss Ishino was smaller by far and was stood in his shadow. While Aomori smiled and held out a hand to shake the officer's the english teacher seemed nervous, forcing a smile and nodding her head several times. She wanted to be back in her classroom with her students to make sure that they were all safe.

"Welcome to Nanakamado, detective." Aomori said with a grin. "I'm Aomori, This is Ishino-san. We'll be your guides."

His face turned solemn and he whispered to the officer. He wasn't being particularly subtle but Ishino pretended not to notice.

"She's the one who discovered the body but the faculty would prefer you didn't question her about it unless it's necisarry. She's been affected badly by it and we'd prefer she was allowed to recover."

The grin returned to his face and he straightened up again.

Mokoto nodded removing her glasses after shaking his hand and looked at Aomori, "I'll keep that in mind Aomori-san, but I have to question everyone on the faculty regarding this issue. My job is to not only ensure the safety of your students, but to find out what really happened to Sato-san for his family and for his friends."

She looked at Miss Ishino, "I'm sure you've had a hard time with this, Ishino-san, but I will need to speak to you. I suggest that you prepare yourself for when I speak to the faculty after speaking with the students."

Mokoto then turned her attention back to Aomori, "Now would you kindly show me the building. I would like to know the lay out of the school to see if there could have been routes that the killer could have taken to get in or out of the building. Also I'm going to need to speak with your janitor and any teacher that had contact with Sato-san."

She glanced over into the cafeteria and commented quickly, "You have a large student body, as I understand there's a mixture of students going here that are on scholarship as well as those who's family can afford private schooling. I'm curious, has there been reports of bullying?"

Aomori looked at Ishino and nodded, displeased with the answer but unwilling to push it. He knew that if he pushed it too much it would look like his colleague had something to hide and the last thing he wanted was to make her seem like the criminal here.

Ishino nodded quickly again, fidgetting as she walked. "I understand. I-I wouldn't want tostop you from bringing whoever's responsible to justice. If it'll help you protect the rest of the students then I'll talk to you as much as you like."

Aomori nodded. "There's maps around the school which show all exits in case of fire. Sato was found in the second floor of the high school's classroom building. That building can be accessed from the front entrance, from the emergency fire exit at the back and from corridors leading from the main building and the cafeteria."

"We try to avoid bullying and encourgage bullied students to come forward. We have a club dedicated to allowing students to discuss such things with thier peers if it makes it easier. Sato was, we have been informed by the councellor, a victim of severe bullying at his old school. The councellor had spoken to him a lot and doesn't believe that he was bullied here."

Mokoto nodded some and walked with them, "That is very kind of you. Thank you for giving me that oppertunity Ishino-san, I know this is difficult for you."

Mokoto followed them quietly, she glanced at the maps and tapped on one, "These are very easy to read....hummm..." she looked up as they walked, "Where is the classroom in regards to the fire exits? What I mean to ask is, how far would a person have to go to access the classroom and head back out?"

"I see," she closed her eyes, "I'd like to meet with the leader of this club as well as see records regarding Sato-san's last school and the encouters he's had."

Going over to one of the emergency doors she jiggled the handle, "Are these armed at night? I know a few schools in the area had some issues with these doors in the past, and they dewired the old system till a new one could be replaced. Also the classrooms, are they locked at night and who has the keys? Is there a night watchman that I can speak with?"

"The classroom is on the second floor. A person would have to climb the stairs. There is a lift installed for accessibility reasons and to allow for easier transport of classroom supplies but only students who have disabilities that would result in them struggling to climb stairs and staff members have keycards to activate it. There are two sets of stairs in case one set is impossible to use in an emergency. The fire exit doors do not open from the outside and openning them from the inside trips the fire alarm which in turn automatically calls the local fire brigade. Because the alarm was not set off that night we don't believe that the fire doors were used."

Aomori pointed to areas on the map. "Classroom doors are locked at night. The fire trapping doors are also locked at night, as are the main doors. Our Janitor lives on-site and supervises the night watchmen. You'll have opportunity to speak to her later."

"You'll be able to get access to all the information that we had on Sato-san's last schools from the reception. The have instructions to co-operate with the police so if you show them your badge they'll help you as much as they can. Please don't be offended if they wish to inspect the badge of check your ID number, though. We've had a number of newshounds trying to use fake badges to get information on Sato and his family recently. Naturally all of them have been reported."

"I see," she said softly and nodded. "So only faculty have access. Was there anyone that leaves late in the evening? And can you tell me about the classrooms. According to our reports Sato-san apparently died around two in the morning, hardly a time for a student to get into the classrooms. Are there any other enterences that someone on the outside could access? Or for that matter are there any rooms in this building that students or faculty have access too in the day that could be used for storage?"

Mokoto wondered if it was possible for the boy to be held at the school then dumped in the classroom. What was bothering her was how that could happen if there was a night watchman on duty. She looked about and listened to Aomori, "I'd like to have a list of faculty who have access to that classroom. Who locks the emergency doors at night?"

Smiling some she added, "Well that's not suprising. We're trying to make it as low publicity as possible, considering what happened in Iburi two years ago, it makes sense to keep things quiet. Speaking of checking, are visitors allowed in here?"

"Y-you'd need to speak to the night watchmen about it." Ishino said quietly. "But all classrooms are checked and no students were in the building at 8pm when the doors were locked. The night patrol at midnight entered the room but reported nothing suspicious. H-he wasn't registered in any lessons that day or the day before, either." She became quiet again, moving back into Aomori's shadow.

"There's a storeroom on the first floor of the classroom building for textbooks." Aomori said, taking over again. "Faculty members have keys for it and students can get keys if they have a note from a teacher. All faculty have keys thier thier own homerooms and any rooms used by clubs they are supervising. Spare keys for all classrooms are kept in the staffroom. Ishino-san is the homeroom teacher for 2-B, that's why se was the first in the classroom that day."

"Visitors are welcome in the reception area but not permitted to go further unescorted unless they've signed in. If you were to be away from us then you'd need to get a special badge from reception. It's for fire safety reasons, as well as to protect our students. Anyone signing in needs to give a reason for being in the school, we've been checking reasons more stricly since Sato-san's death."

"Hummmm, I suppose I will have to. Thank you for that information Ishino-san." She glanced at the quiet woman and smiled some. Ishino reminded her very much of her own mother, or more specifically the woman that acted like her mother, her Aunt. "So no reports of anything odd at midnight, but he was found that morning in the room, even though it was locked up.Sato-san was missing for the better part of two days, according to his parents he normally calls at least twice a week to let them know how he is. He missed his calls. Hummm, are the windows locked in your classroom Ishino-san?"

Mokoto scowled some listening to this, she looked plainly at Aomori, "So a student can, in essence, forge a note and get a key to a room? Are they checked in or out by someone or just handed out? Is there any other means for a student or faculty to obtain a key inside the building? Teachers...I've met in the past, have had the unfortunate habit of leaving keys unattended in drawers in their office, has anyone reported missing or stolen keys recently?"

"Is that area at all left unattended at any time? What of visitors that come in a side enterence?" she asked quickly but seemed pleased about the strict code.

Student Questioning

Detective Shirow and her partner sat at a table formed from four desks in classroom 3-F. The male detective was writing, while Shirow was looking over files on the students of classroom 2-B. The students had been informed that they would be meeting with the Detective and as their names were called they were to report to the classroom for questioning. Students that failed to show up were going to be visited later that evening at their house.

Mokoto sighed, there was a long list of names, this was going to be a long day. Taking a sip of her drink she waited for the first student to arrive. If anything she wanted to be juiced up with caffeine before the first person came in so she would be on the ball with this. The whole case bothered her, and she had seen enough in Tokyo to know that something wasn't normal at the school.

When there was a knock on the door frame, she looked up, "Please come in."

A family name beginning with A meant Maeko was at the top of the register.

She wasn't at all happy about being dragged out of class, even less so about having to go first, but she didn't want to talk to the detective at her home where she would have to translate everything.

"Good Afternoon." She said politely, entering the room.

Mokoto looked up and nodded, "Ah Good Afternoon. Please have a seat."

The officer next to her quickly pulled up a file and took out his pen, "Your name please?"

"We need to know for our notes and refrences," Mokoto said and looked at Maeko gently but firmly. It was clear to the young student that the Detective would not tolerate lies or deception.

Maeko sat before speaking, looking up. It looked like she was fidgetting as she spoke. In truth, she was signing out of force of habit. She was used to her father being around whenever people were speaking this seriously.

"Akuba Maeko, class 2-B." She said, placing her hands back into her lap when she was done speaking.

"Pleased to meet you Akuba-san, I'm Detective Mokoto Shirow, and this is Officer Edagowa. We're here to ask you some questions about Sato Kei-san and would really appricate it if you cooperate with us and answer the questions honetly," Mokoto explained and looked at her.

"I know this must be hard on you and your fellow classmates, but I am treating you all right now as witnesses. We need to know what you know in order for us to fully understand what was going on with Sato-san when he died. If he was having any problems or if there was anything that was happening that could give us some clues as who would want to hurt him."

Mokoto blinked a bit and smiled when she saw the hand gestures, "You're fluent in sign language I see. A good thing to know in this day and age." She quickly changed the subject, "Now first off, relax and take your time answering, no one is going to bite your head off if you don't remember things, but if you do we want you to call us okay. It's really important that we get to know everything we can, and your help is important to the case."

She sat back and nodded to the officer, "Officer Edagowa is going to record our converstation. Are you alright with that?"

"Ah..." Maeko started. She hadn't noticed she'd been signing. She was even more surprised that the officer understood it.

"I understand, detective. I have no objections." She said, concentrating on keeping her hands still.

"Alright then," Mokoto sat back to seem relaxed. Getting people to talk was tricky. You had to be careful of what sort of tone you used and how you appeared. Get them to be jumpy and they would clam up on you, and in this case she didn't want that to happen.

Smileing gently at Maeko she asked, "Akuba-san, what can you tell me about Sato-san? Did you know him well?"

"We weren't close." Maeko said. "We were in the same class last year and his year until..." She trailed off and started a new sentence. "He was polite but we didn't really make friends. He skipped lessons a lot, except literature. He always showed up to literature. He visited the Anti Bullying club a lot last year but most of the time he wanted to talk about things that happened before he came to Nanakamado. Because it wasn't anything we could do anything about he was eventually refferred to the councellor directly so that we could deal with people who we could help instead. After that I didn't speak to him much. Because he didn't show up to class often the only time I really spoke to him was at the club."

"So Sato-san came frequently last year to your club. Did anyone talk to him after? What did he talk about might I ask?" Mokoto inqured. This could prove useful if there was the possiblity of things happening there that could have lead the boy to look for outside help.

"You said he skipped classes, how long was he gone for these periods, do you know? Also, did he ever talk about friends he was meeting when he left or where he went to?" Mokoto glanced at the other officer, "Ah...yes his family mentioned something about the literature, did he speak to anyone why he would come back for that class?"
