Entry tags:kou, kozue

WHO: Kou and Kozue
WHAT: Pangs of jealousy and fragile cellphones
WHERE: School
WHEN: Right after Kou declares his intent to 'spend the night with Maeko'; Tom-Dungeon midboss break
WHY: Purposes unknown and sinister.

Having dropped her phone on the concrete when she saw that Kou was, apparently, trying to get into Maeko's pants, Kozue was in nearly complete despair. For one thing, she'd thought that Oubai-senpai had felt… no, that was stupid, and it was going down the same silly path she'd tread down with Keiichi. Following the idea that someone who was polite to her, considerate of her, chivalrous to her, would be somehow a novel experience as a boyfriend. Or even a good one. For another, did he really think that Akuba was more appealing than she was? How could he possibly… But there it was.

And, of course, the fact that she'd broken her phone, was now incommunicado, and would have to spend time and money to get it fixed.

She'd been attending a summer-session tennis practice, mostly because the captain had contacted her about her abysmal attendance record and guilted her into showing up. It was over, and Kozue, with her worse-for-the-wear phone and rather downcast look, was making her way out through the school gates.

"Wh—" She stopped. Everything he said was jerking her in one direction or another, and she hadn't the slightest clue what was happening. What he thought, or what he felt.

"I'm asking because we're team mates, and friends," she tried, "and you were the one who said you'd—you wanted to come home with me. Or do you not feel that way?" The emotional whiplash was upsetting her; she was surprised to find she was actually getting mildly angry. "I get it. If you just want a screw without any pretense of friendliness or anything else, you should just have said so."

The colour draining from Kouchisei's face returned swiftly. Honestly, he was not familiar enough with women to have knowledge of how to interact with them from any examples but his mother; she wasn't a woman they could compete with, and he didn't want to be in the situation where that might be the case. Constantly, he felt like he was living up to her memory and what she'd asked of him. He raised his arms, and suddenly brought them down.

"Is that all you think of me? You're far more enjoyable than most to spend time with, but I," his tone was angrier, "don't like people. Some of are fine but most make too much noise."

Kou pushed up his glasses and continued, "I suppose there's an excuse for this behaviour. I'd like to hear it."

"Between the two of us, I'm not the one who needs to explain herself," Kozue defended, her shoulders tensing. "Or make an excuse. If you don't like people, why are you running around with Akuba-senpai, and expecting to get the same from me without even pretending to be friendly? I can't ask a simple question about you?"

She took a breath; she knew how unbecoming this was. How much her Grandmother would be yelling at her, were she here. Had she seen this. She had to … to not be so indignant. Why did she care, anyway?

Because she'd thought that being the person that Kou was nice to had marked her as special, somehow, a recipient of a privilege that nobody else got. And now it seemed that wasn't the case.

Finally, Kou put two and two together and got four.

"You think I want to sleep with Akuba?"

He didn't say anything; how insulting it was to even be accused! His father would be laughing if he were here, because he knew him better than anyone. "An Oubai does not do those sorts of things!" He didn't understand why others did, either.

"I haven't known you for long; now you're acting you have a right to know everything about me. Fine! What do you want to know?"

"B-but you just said that you were!" She spluttered, indignantly. "Back there in the school! So you're not? So what's—" She stopped talking and mostly gaped like a fish, baffled, anger and hurt stopped in their tracks by confusion.

"I have no idea what's going on," she finally finished with.

He blinked, confused. "People were bothering me. I said I'd spend the night at Akuba-san's to get Father off my back. But she's a girl so-"

There was a fidgeting of his arms. He was quiet as though a wasp had just alighted on his shoulder. "-Look, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to give the wrong impression. I'm just confused."

"Oh."

She stopped, and blinked. "I--that was all? You were going to spend the night, like, a sleepover or something?" She was caught somewhere between embarrassment that she'd freaked out so unnecessarily on Kou, and her own mess of confusion. He hadn't realized what that would look or sound like? How could a person not? And she'd thought that…

She blushed.

"I think we're both confused," she mumbled, while her face reddened; she crossed one arm over her torso, gripping the opposite upper arm a bit too tightly. Damn it, she shouldn't care. She wasn't special, there was no reason to want to feel as though she was...

"I think that's obvious," Kou replied, folding his arms. He looked relieved; his shoulders fell and he didn't have to worry anymore. The argument had been dealt with. Now he was certain he preferred peace and quiet - for there to be as few people in sight as possible.

"We shouldn't stop when I'm supposed to be walking you home." He turned his gaze on her. "If you really want to know me better, I wouldn't mind learning about you first."

He waited. He had to know what he was getting into.

"That's fair," Kozue breathed, starting to walk again, and settling herself back into a comfortable place, mentally speaking. It took some quick revision of her understanding of Kou, the situation, Akuba… well, everyone. After a moment of being quiet, she piped up.

"Okay. Well, I was born around here, although not in town. I'm O-Type Blood? You know I'm on the tennis team," she hefted the tennis bag to prove it, "so… what else is there. What do you want to know?"

Kou shrugged. He had hoped to make small talk, and to divert attention from himself. The latter was working. The former? That was becoming too deep. However, he had asked, and if it made her happy then he could politely listen.

"What about your parents?"

"They run the family business. They work in Tokyo these days, and they have since… since I was about ten, I think, so I don't get to see them much anymore. I sometimes go visit on holidays. I like the city a whole bunch—it's got so much going on." She smiled; at least giving personal information was an easy conversational topic. At least, she hoped it was.

It was easy, non-confontational talking that meant Kouchisei could nod and smile and feign interest. His body felt comfortable, which was surprising and made him feel something was wrong, because it had not felt comfortable in a long time.

"You don't like the countryside? Pitiful. I admit Iburi's convenient, but it's not peaceful; it's getting harder to find someplace quiet to think."

He paused. This conversation was getting intimate, and he preferred to know where he stood. "Do you like me?"

She had been about to object to the fact that he'd called her pitiful for liking Tokyo--in addition to the fact that she didn't dislike the countryside, in fact she lived there half the time she wasn't in school anyway, but— but her thoughts stopped as Oubai asked her a strange question.

Actually, she supposed, it was probably a completely natural question but it was just one of those things that people didn't usually ask. Not outright. She hesitated for just a moment, wrapping her brain around it, and then, "Yes. I do."

It sounded as though she'd made up her mind about it, too. Whether he meant romantically or just as friends—when it came down to it, she'd cover her ass later and say that 'oh, yes, that's what I meant, of course!' For now, he could decide what exactly they were talking about.

Kouchisei knew what it meant; he had watched enough dramas to know. He supposed it was natural Kozue would take it to meant romance. He had meant it differently. He asked questions, people were shocked. Unguarded. He relaxed for a moment, believing this was what he wanted, and then remembered what his father wanted for him. A nice girl and children.

He was unsure. Were those things for him, or for his father to feel he had done a good job?

He liked Kozue's company, and the thought of her leaving made his muscles freeze. She would not do that, right? He was testing to be sure, and she could pick up the pieces.

"I'm a person. What exactly is the nature of my relationship with you?"

She quirked an eyebrow. What was he… damn it, this was supposed to be his decision. This was the kind of decision traditionally… Damn it, why did she have to keep dating such difficult boys?

She made a vow to herself that the next person she saw (whether or not Oubai's interrogation of her actually led to a relationship) was going to be simple, and motivated only by hormones. It'd be a nice break.

"Well," she started, not sure how to proceed (and that was a notable moment: Kondo not sure how to proceed when a question to do with romance came up!), "I like you. I already said I'd like to know more about you. I think anything else depends on," a breath. God, girls shouldn't have to go through this. What happened to confessions of romantic feelings or drunken hookups? Simplicity. "How do you feel about me?"

Kouchisei did the same as always when he needed five extra seconds; he shrugged, scratched the back of his head, and then pushed his glasses up his nose. He liked to think he was the one making the decision about the relationship. He had raised the issue. If he'd left it up to Kozue, they'd still be talking about ridiculous nonsense he had no interest in.

"I hate you because you make me worry; you should have told me Tom's shadow accosted you on your birthday," he said, and then there was another shrug. "I'm interested, I suppose. So if you wanted to take it further, I am willing to explore the possibility."

Not to mention it would make his father happy, which was as much a reason for this circumstance as his own happiness. He didn't mind visiting Kozue's grandmother. She seemed a sensible woman.

Kozue was kind of flabber-gasted. He hated her? Wait, what?! She stopped, and tried to, well, decode what he'd just said to her.

He hated her and he was interested? What in the world? Her mouth actually dropped open a bit, before she remembered to close it. She couldn't do much about her general expression, though.

"… You know, I don't think anyone has ever…" She shook her head. "So you're willing to explore the possibility of dating?" Another moment to parse. "And you hate me. That's certainly a… non-traditional combination."

The longer it took Kozue to say no, and he knew she would, the thought that people were untrustworthy came closer to the fore. He looked at her studiously. How hard was it to say yes? No, even?

He wanted to see how pure and emotional a relationship could be. Others had experienced it. People seemed to think he was abnormal becase he wanted none of it - neurotic. His father had told him the right plan was to settle and get married. Kozue had come across at the right time. She'd take some of that pressure away.

"What exactly is the problem? You're here to spend time with me. If you're unwilling all you have to do is decline."

"I'm not unwilling," Kozue responded, still feeling as though she were stumbling over her words, unsure of what was even going on. The conversation, and the studious way he was looking at her, made her vaguely uncomfortable; and being uncomfortable made her feel even more unsettled.

"I'm just… no, never mind, it's a very silly objection. I think we could…" she shrugged. "Give it a try? Was that what you said?" She smiled; she was finding her footing, if even a little bit. This part was easier, more natural, more familiar: "I'd like that very much."

An agreement from Kozue was not a common thing for Kou. One for dating? He blinked. That was new. The idea tipped his head sideways, and the subsequent thought he would have to spend money and keep her happy, made him curious.

Honestly, he thought it was a bad idea. Everything he knew about love he had learned from J-drama. People were overtaken by emotions: love, fearlessness, sickness. But he was finding a way to keep his father happy, and was hoping it would soften the blow about telling him he did not want to run the ryotei.

He felt obliged to keep his father happy. This was the simplest way of doing that that did not affect himself badly.

He smiled. "I'm glad, I suppose. If we are serious, we should go to..." Then he realised he did not know much about her. "Where do you want to go, anyway?"

"Well, are you hungry?" Kozue asked, smiling pleasantly and trying to figure out what had just happened and exactly why she'd agreed.

No, she had some inkling, actually. Because she was bored and this would be something new and different. It just seemed, more and more, as though it'd be something difficult, too. And difficult things were not usually anything Kozue wanted anything to do with. On the other hand, maybe she could parlay this into some kind of advantage with her grandmother. Look, I have a really respectable boyfriend; maybe I should have more allowance. Maybe I should…

Kou paused. He believed Kozue liked burgers and chips; those foods were unhealthy, and he worried she would fall ill. Silly, he thought. She was from a good Japanese family. His father, and Kozue's grandmother he supposed, would be pleased.

He made a noise. "Soyokaze Touka is owned by my family. It would be pointless not to utelise it. Tuesday, at eight?"

Kozue's smile grew--fancy food was a great way to appease her; fancy places, too, and Soyokaze Touka was great for both. "That sounds perfect. I'm not doing anything then. I'll meet you there?"

She was already thinking about the delicious food—and what to wear.

He nodded. That had gone well. It would be easy enough to book a seat behind his father's back. He felt a twinge of guilt about concealing this, and thought it was best to see how he felt after, rather than talk to his father now and then turn into a failure. It was not the right thing, but he had gotten bolder lately.

Staff knew him. He'd get a table.

"Right." He looked away. "I should be going home. Father will know if I'm late, and I'm sure you have places to be."
