Who: Kanaye and Maeko
What: Random date
Where: Random anpan place. Or something.
When: Before Tom's dungeon.
Why: I like threads.

Kanaye was waiting outside the restaurant happily. He did everything happily when it came to Maeko. He'd probably cry happily.  Well, depending on why he was crying. If he was crying because she said she loved him when he was in a bad spot, he'd be happy. If he was crying because she broke up with him, he probably wouldn't be very happy.

Kanaye STILL wasn't sure why Maeko dated him, even with that spectacle at the party. For one, he was a complete and utter asshole to her best friend, not that she doesn't deserve it. For two, he was an alcoholic. He wouldn't sell her out for ANYTHING, but he'd probably come rather close. And finally, Kanaye didn't know why Maeko actually loved him. He was clingy, he was obsessive...

Not that he'd talk about these worries to her. He didn't want to give her a justification she didn't already have for dumping him. He smiled and waited.

Good answer? Bad answer? Maeko couldn't actually tell. She noticed the trembling, though, and continued taking tiny bites of anpan until she could remember something that sounded better.

"Last year..." She started, deciding 'why I used to like you before you started calling me a scary lesbian' might help. "Back when the club started and you used to attend meetings sometimes and even though you didn't attend that much you'd always talk to anyone even outside of them and be willing to help people even if you didn't know them so well. I thought it was kind. That was why I used to cheer for you last year."

Kanaye was not actually enjoying his anpan when Maeko started talking. He paused, but made no other motion. When she finally finished, he looked up. Kanaye was nearly crying. "If you liked me that much...why didn't you do something about it?" It wasn't angry. It wasn't very sad. It was just a question.

"I didn't think I was supposed to." Maeko said. Which was actually the truth mostly. Compounded by other issues such as the game not having started then and when did she ever tell anyone anything. "It seemed like the normal thing to do to go and cheer and wait until someone noticed."

Kanaye sighed, but wiped away the tears. "Maeko-chan, if you want to do something, don't let anyone ever stop you, alright?"

After dispensing the sage advice, he smiled. "Well, whatever. No use looking into the past. Now, we just have to look in the present, right?" Kanaye squeezed Maeko's hand. "I love you so much...I don't know what I'd do without you."

Success! Maybe? It seemed she'd managed to undo the damage that the failed joke had done, at least. And, in going through the best of her reasons for liking him last year, she'd managed to reaffirm to herself the fact that she really did want this.

She moved her hand a little to interlock her fingers with Kanaye's, smiling. "I'm glad. It's not like you'd need to know something like that anyway, I'm not going to go."

She'd been saying that a lot recently, the subject kept being brought up. Sheshrugged off the thought.

Kanaye blinked a bit. And then again. And then he smiled and would have hugged her if not for the table. "...I'm going to hold you to that, you know. But...thanks, Maeko-chan. This really does mean a lot."

And then he decided to ignore the table. He stood up, walked over to Maeko, gave her a quick peck on the lips, and then sat down again, all while smiling like the happiest man on earth.

"You're welcome to." Maeko said, only vaguely wondering what on earth she was getting herself into here.

Not going was good. Maeko mentally noted it next to 'jokes are bad', 'contact is apparently acceptable' and 'avoid Tom's shadow, he's a dick'.

Tables in the way was becoming a theme, Maeko noted. Maybe they should start arranging dates in places that didn't have tables. She was surprised by the sudden kiss out of nowhere (though in the last two weeks that was becoming more and more common) but smiled, stroking Kanaye's cheek lightly before he moved out of reach.

"I'm glad that makes you happy." She said once Kanaye had taken his seat again, smiling.

Kanaye went euphoric at Maeko's touch. He was dancing inside. And almost outside, as well, but he managed to control his smile so that it wasn't creepy. "Well, thanks, Maeko-chan! I really just want to make you happy, and if you're happy that I'm happy, I guess that I'll have to be happier more often, eh?"

The waiter arrived, and Kanaye paid the bill. He looked at Maeko again. "Do you want to go somewhere else, or...?"

Maeko had to think for a second to remember what day it was to work out if she needed to go back to the dorms to get ready for work.

She's done a shift at Kigakiga already so that meant it was either saturday or sunday. And she'd attended school this morning so that made it saturday. That was good. No work tonight and nothing due for morning.

"That sounds nice." She said, nodding. "I don't have a shift later tonight and I can finish my work tommorrow and-" She paused for a second, trying to figure out how to say this without it sounding stupid or weak. She failed. "-and I want to stay with you a little bit longer, at least."

Kanaye nodded. "That's always great. Work is..."

And then she said it. It took all of Kanaye's scant willpower to resist the urge to jump up, hug her, and dance like an idiot. Instead, his smile merely grew wider. "Well, that's wonderful, Maeko-chan! I want to spend more time with you as well. So, where shall we go?" he asked, standing up and offering a hand up.

Maeko took Kanaye's hand and stood, smiling.

"I didn't really think that far ahead..." She admitted, trying to think on the spot but still too tired from work and extra work and making mistakes and apparently fixing them to figure anything out. "Anywhere's okay."

She almost made a comment about maybe somewhere without tables but remembered just in time that jokes were bad.

Kanaye smiled. "Well, I doubt anywhere. I doubt you want to go to my house or dorm room, for example."

As he walked out of the building, he turned again. "I seriously have no idea, though. Can you think of anything?"

For living in Iburi all her life, Maeko didn't know of many places where she didn't work.

"The skypark's a nice place." She said, thinking of one of those on the spot. "It's not like there's much to do there but..."

Kanaye blinked, hummed a bit in thought, and nodded. "True, but you have to admit, Maeko-chan. Cherry blossoms are very romantic. Shall we walk, or...?"

Kanaye held up the cell phone.

"Driving means someone else has to be there. If it's okay, I don't really want someone else to be there right now." Maeko said, nodding to herself as she spoke.

Kanaye grabbed Maeko's hand and started walking. "That's fine, Maeko-chan. Anything you want is fine."

Kanaye looked around. It was no different from any other day. Therefore, Kanaye decided, he needed to do absolutely nothing. He just squeezed Maeko's hand and kept walking.

Maeko squeezed back, taking comfort in the fact that she'd managed to make this whole thing feel at least normal. She was even almost a little jealous of-

Time to bring up an awkward subject! And quash worries that she'd clearly just tricked herself into happenning.

"Senpai, Watanaka-san returned to town a while ago and I know I shouldn't worry but..." She trailed off, avoiding eye contact with Kanaye. Even if her expression was visible it would have been unreadable. "You're not going to, are you?" She asked, not exactly making it clear what she meant, though the context probably communicated the question better than she did.

Kanaye turned to Maeko and smiled. It wasn't a good smile. It was a smile that tried to show you how much that person was smiling. And that they definitely weren't thinking of anything bad. Of course not. "Maeko-chan." His voice wasn't angry, but it wasn't happy either. "Let me make one thing evident right now. I despise Watanaka-san. She left me without even a text, and I already confronted her about it." And cried like a little baby, but whatever.

Kanaye's expression softened, as did his voice. "You don't need to worry, Maeko-chan. I'll never leave you. You're much better then her. You're nicer, funnier, prettier..." he trailed off by stopping in the middle of the sentence and looking forward, hurrying up. He just wanted to get to skypark ASAP.

The vague 'what have I got myself into' feeling returned at that expression. For the first time she wondered if there was a reason Shiori had chosen to break up with Kanaye by putting a lot of distance between them for a few months.

But even then it was sort of comforting. Misaki had said that she knew for sure it wasn't a joke and her worries about being second choice had been dealt with in a slightly terrifying way.

She was considering this while moving much faster than she was really used to doing anything that wasn't running for buses. They were climbing the steps up to the skypark before she'd managed to think enough to react (this might have also been because there was a lot to think about).

"I'm glad." She said, finally reacting. She hopped onto the next step to compensate for the height difference and kiss Kanaye's cheek without having to stand on tiptoes and wobble.

Kanaye responded by grabbing a hold of Maeko and crying into her shoulder. He didn't care if this was a private place or a public place or whatever kind of place it was. He just needed comfort. "I-I'm...I-I..." Kanaye blubbered ineffectually. "I-I'm...not a bad person aren't I? I mean, I'm nice, and rich, and I'm nice and stuff. But...then why do they all leave me..."

It was clear that the question wasn't rhetorical. Kanaye actually expected an answer.

That had not been the reaction Maeko had expected at all. 'Psysical contact' went from 'solution to most awkwardness' to a giant question mark on her mental list.

But she was used by now to overemotional people and the stairs were more private at least than the park itself was likely to be so it could be worse. She shifted as much as she could until her arms wee free enough to hug Kanaye back.

"Of- of course you're not." She said, blowing a few stands of hair away so she could kiss his ear in the hope that contact would start helping again rather than prompt more upset. "I don't know. I'm sorry."

Kanaye continued to bawl into her shoulder for a few more minutes before managing to calm down. He sighed, hugged Maeko one last time, and let go, looking ashamed and depressed. "...I'm sorry. Can we...just pretend that didn't happen? I...just don't like it very much when people remind me of Shiori-san. Can we please not talk about her?"

Oh, so it had been Shiori rather than contact. That explained it.

Maeko nodded. "Of course we can." She said, smiling and taking advantage of her current one-step-higher height to brush the hair away from Kanaye's face without having to stretch up.

"Sorry, I was just- I don't think I'll need to bring her up again anyway so- ...I won't vanish on you like that. I promise." She said, trying again and again until she found a wording she was happy with.

Kanaye looked at Maeko, blinked, and smiled. "Thanks, Maeko-chan. I'm...just kind of paranoid about this "trust" thing." Kanaye, deciding that Maeko probably didn't want MORE physical contact, just started walking up the steps, waving at Maeko to follow him.

Maeko nodded, running at first to catch up. She fished around in her mind for non-offensive conversation topics but found nothing, remaining slient until they emerged into the skypark.

Which was calm as always, the contrast between the plants and the city skyline only making it seem moreso.

"It's nice." She said uselessly, lacking a better topic.
