Who: Kanaye and Maeko
What: Random date
Where: Random anpan place. Or something.
When: Before Tom's dungeon.
Why: I like threads.

Kanaye was waiting outside the restaurant happily. He did everything happily when it came to Maeko. He'd probably cry happily.  Well, depending on why he was crying. If he was crying because she said she loved him when he was in a bad spot, he'd be happy. If he was crying because she broke up with him, he probably wouldn't be very happy.

Kanaye STILL wasn't sure why Maeko dated him, even with that spectacle at the party. For one, he was a complete and utter asshole to her best friend, not that she doesn't deserve it. For two, he was an alcoholic. He wouldn't sell her out for ANYTHING, but he'd probably come rather close. And finally, Kanaye didn't know why Maeko actually loved him. He was clingy, he was obsessive...

Not that he'd talk about these worries to her. He didn't want to give her a justification she didn't already have for dumping him. He smiled and waited.

Kanaye turned to Maeko and smiled. It wasn't a good smile. It was a smile that tried to show you how much that person was smiling. And that they definitely weren't thinking of anything bad. Of course not. "Maeko-chan." His voice wasn't angry, but it wasn't happy either. "Let me make one thing evident right now. I despise Watanaka-san. She left me without even a text, and I already confronted her about it." And cried like a little baby, but whatever.

Kanaye's expression softened, as did his voice. "You don't need to worry, Maeko-chan. I'll never leave you. You're much better then her. You're nicer, funnier, prettier..." he trailed off by stopping in the middle of the sentence and looking forward, hurrying up. He just wanted to get to skypark ASAP.

The vague 'what have I got myself into' feeling returned at that expression. For the first time she wondered if there was a reason Shiori had chosen to break up with Kanaye by putting a lot of distance between them for a few months.

But even then it was sort of comforting. Misaki had said that she knew for sure it wasn't a joke and her worries about being second choice had been dealt with in a slightly terrifying way.

She was considering this while moving much faster than she was really used to doing anything that wasn't running for buses. They were climbing the steps up to the skypark before she'd managed to think enough to react (this might have also been because there was a lot to think about).

"I'm glad." She said, finally reacting. She hopped onto the next step to compensate for the height difference and kiss Kanaye's cheek without having to stand on tiptoes and wobble.

Kanaye responded by grabbing a hold of Maeko and crying into her shoulder. He didn't care if this was a private place or a public place or whatever kind of place it was. He just needed comfort. "I-I'm...I-I..." Kanaye blubbered ineffectually. "I-I'm...not a bad person aren't I? I mean, I'm nice, and rich, and I'm nice and stuff. But...then why do they all leave me..."

It was clear that the question wasn't rhetorical. Kanaye actually expected an answer.

That had not been the reaction Maeko had expected at all. 'Psysical contact' went from 'solution to most awkwardness' to a giant question mark on her mental list.

But she was used by now to overemotional people and the stairs were more private at least than the park itself was likely to be so it could be worse. She shifted as much as she could until her arms wee free enough to hug Kanaye back.

"Of- of course you're not." She said, blowing a few stands of hair away so she could kiss his ear in the hope that contact would start helping again rather than prompt more upset. "I don't know. I'm sorry."

Kanaye continued to bawl into her shoulder for a few more minutes before managing to calm down. He sighed, hugged Maeko one last time, and let go, looking ashamed and depressed. "...I'm sorry. Can we...just pretend that didn't happen? I...just don't like it very much when people remind me of Shiori-san. Can we please not talk about her?"

Oh, so it had been Shiori rather than contact. That explained it.

Maeko nodded. "Of course we can." She said, smiling and taking advantage of her current one-step-higher height to brush the hair away from Kanaye's face without having to stretch up.

"Sorry, I was just- I don't think I'll need to bring her up again anyway so- ...I won't vanish on you like that. I promise." She said, trying again and again until she found a wording she was happy with.

Kanaye looked at Maeko, blinked, and smiled. "Thanks, Maeko-chan. I'm...just kind of paranoid about this "trust" thing." Kanaye, deciding that Maeko probably didn't want MORE physical contact, just started walking up the steps, waving at Maeko to follow him.

Maeko nodded, running at first to catch up. She fished around in her mind for non-offensive conversation topics but found nothing, remaining slient until they emerged into the skypark.

Which was calm as always, the contrast between the plants and the city skyline only making it seem moreso.

"It's nice." She said uselessly, lacking a better topic.

Kanaye nodded and sat down on a bench. "Yeah..." He stared off into space, thinking about things. Very important things. He wasn't sure what they were, but he was definitely thinking about them.

Maeko sat next to Kanaye quietly, still not sure what to say.

"I heard the school's not pressing charges against those creeps." She said, deciding that 'we both hate these guys' was a good enough common ground. "They'll just get away with it."

If she sounded bitter about this it was because she was. In the real world and without that witch the existance of those rules and laws and the fact that people were meant to follow them was the only real power or protection she had. To see them ignored so easily was both terrifying and felt like she was being betrayed personally.

Kanaye sighed and growled. "I knew it. Nothing can ever get done if we trust those with "authority." Hell, if we told the police about paradise, they'd probably just either laugh it off. Hell, given our luck, they just might be behind it."

Kanaye smirked. "Speaking of horrible people in positions of authority, what do you think of Kiriko?"

"Kiriko?" Maeko thought for a second. "I think she does her best but it's maybe unfair to expect her to act as leader. It's more responsibility that it's reasonable to expect someone to take, especially given that she's one of the younger club members. I think we probably need a leader as a group but I don't really think any of us are really capable enough to be responsible for themselves, let alone the lives of nineteen people."

She turned her attention beck to the topic at hand. "Probably. It does seem implausiable. I'm not sure how they'd even prosecute the killer if we managed to catch them. 'Guilty of apparently being an angel'? And that's even if they were convinced..."

Finding the thought a lot more disturbing than she might have a few weeks ago, she clung at Kanaye's arm before continuing. "In order to stop this whole mess, we might have to kill a real person..."

Kanaye shrugged. "That is true, but I don't think she's very good at it, trying her best or no. She just lets Reizo get away with everything... I mean, she's probably the best choice we have, but..."

Kanaye was kind of confused at the arm clinging (Wasn't she supposed to be the strong one?), but he hugged her closely none the less. "Don't worry, Maeko-chan. That will be our last resort. And if we do...well, don't worry Maeko-chan. I'll make sure you don't have to be the one to do it."

"I'm not sure there's that many people who'd be willing to stand between Reizo and what he wants." Maeko said, shrugging. "It's sort of an inherently bad idea. And whether we like it or not he's strong and can aquire weapons and if we end this needing to hide a body... and they're advantages we can't really afford to lose when we have no idea what we're facing."

Maeko nodded. The concern wasn't gone but she could pretend it was well enough. "Thank you..."

"Logically, that is the correct decision. But..." Kanaye sighed. "I just don't feel right, fighting alongside a yakuza. Even if he is on our side, I...just can't trust him. More then usual, at least."

Kanaye smiled softly and kissed her on the forehead. "No worries, Maeko-chan. It's one of the few things I'm good at, and helping you is a job that never gets old."

"I don't think we need to trust him. We just have to...tolerate him. Even if he's not a friend we don't want him as an enemy."

Needing to be helped meant needing to be protected and that meant weakness. Maeko was furious at herself for not noticing that sooner. She soundly be accepting help, let alone requesting it. Still, she nodded and smiled as best she could and mumbled another 'thank you'.

Kanaye smiled. "No problem."

Deciding that it was romantic enough, he kissed Maeko on the lips deeply and fully, holding her tightly.

There were probably better timings for that sort of thing, but it was at least a good...change of topic? It meant she didn't have to think about the possibility of having to potentially be a murderer herself just to end this. And that was good. So she returned the kiss.

If there way anything Kanaye was good at, it was distracting people. The fact that he was enjoying this didn't hurt. So he made the kiss last as long as possible. After he had finally stopped, he smiled sheepishly at Maeko. "Sorry about not asking, Maeko-chan, but you seemed like you needed that."

Maeko caught herself before she said she'd just have to do the same later for revenge. Jokes were bad.

"It's okay..." She said, rearranging herself so she had her arms wrapped around Kanaye and not just his arm and trying to think of something normal to talk about. Normal and not offensive. Anpan? Ice cream? School clubs? Bromonade?

None really seemed like good ideas.

"You saw Kondo-san just after all that, right? Was she okay?" She asked. It was something she was still worried about anyway. "I've been her since and she seemed alright but..." She trailed off. Nobody would have ever suspected that the 'but...' was 'but then she distracted me with a puppy'.

Kanaye smiled, holding her closely. "Yeah, Kozue-san is fine. Really, she's quite nice. Not at all what you'd expect her to be. But yeah, she's fine. Just took a bit. Reizo showed up, and..."

Kanaye remembered what his conversation with Kozue was about. He blushed, but managed to make his voice stay calm. "I gave her my presents, she was really happy about all the dresses. Speaking of which, Maeko-chan, if you ever need anything, materials-wise, just ask me, alright? I've got money to burn, and it's better to use it on someone I love instead of myself."

Maeko nodded, relieved. "I'm glad she's okay, then. She was fine when I spoke to her but I thought she might have just been pretending so any rumours cleared up faster."

Maeko managed to disguise the sudden twitch as a hiccup fairly well and managed to keep the smile on her face and not seem alarmed. "It's fine, I don't need anything." She said, trying her best once again to ignore the huge power divide between them.

Kanaye laughed. "No, she's fine. Me and Kiriko-san helped out. I mean, I stumbled into her on accident and talked some sense into her, and Kiriko showed up later and gave words of encouragement and helped with her make-up. Then we got drunk. It was fun!"

"Well, ok, but if you ever need anything, don't hesitate to call, alright?" Kanaye hugged her close again before letting go a bit. "I'd say this day was productive, right?"

"I'm glad. It's important to make sure those things don't cause any more damage than they have to. Mine caused a lot of problems so..." And trail off again. "I'm glad she's okay."

"I will." Maeko said, nodding and glad that was dealt with quickly enough. Productive? She thought for a second. Half day at school, normal shift at work that was elongated due to a late train that she wasn't thinking about as hard as she could not think about anything, managed to figure out that jokes and Shiori were had things to discuss...yes, she supposed it had been productive enough. "Yeah, I guess."

Kanaye visibly shuddered at the mention of Maeko's shadow. "You can say that again..." His voice was calm, but he was still kind of freaked.

He nodded and smiled. "Indeed. Well then, Maeko-chan, shall we spend some more time together? Perhaps back at my room? But if you've had enough of me for one day, I couldn't blame you."
