Who: Maeko, Misaki
What: Something.
Where: School
When: Afterschool, on a non-club day for either of them, once Misa's back.
Why: Because Maeko did something really stupid.

Maeko had attempted to write a note. And failed. Even when writing she didn't really trust her skill with words. What had been written, if one attempted to look behind the heavy strikeouts, was nice enough. Higher than the normal standard for a Nanakamado locker note, anyway (though this meant very little, considering the standard of most Nanakamado locker notes).

Instead, a room number and the word 'afterschool' had been scrawled on it. The note had been placed inside a large sketchbook which was empty other than 'Property of Aoi Misaki. Please return if found.' writted in the inside cover in very small, very neat writing. Taped to the front of it was the bracelet.

The repair was imperfect. Maeko lacked the dexterity to use wire or clasps and not all the beads had been retrieved. The lost beads had been replaced by store-bought glass ones that didn't quite match. Thin white ribbon had been used instead of both wire and clasps, it would require tying.

After school, Maeko waited in the specified classroom sat on a table and kicking her legs. She wasn't sure what she was going to do next but this seemed like a good enough first step.

Misaki had been lucky so far, the hand book didn't specify that you couldn't add a slip under the skirt, so she had (a white one with lace that hung out around the edges) and they didn't say you couldn't wear a shirt that had ruffles or add a scarf around your neck to make the shirt look more high collared (which she had since it looked better when the collar looked higher). She only wished that she could lenghten the jacket but that had to stay the lenght it was, and would look silly to wear anything under it. So she'd gone to get the black jacket she'd put in her shoe locker after school and was suprised to find the sketchbook sitting there.

"Huh?" Misaki gently lifted it out with the jacket and put the jacket over her arm as she examined the bracelet. She recognized it at once but wasn't sure what to make of it. Her first thought though was that this was the final act. That Maeko was giving this back to her as a way of saying good-bye.

The note was a scibbled mess, but she was able to make out a room number and placed the sketchbook under her arm. Walking up the stairs to the room Misaki felt a bit ill. She wanted to run away but if she did then the shadow would have been right. And she needed to face this and grow a spine. She placed the bracelt into her jacket pocket before placing her hand on the door.

Turning the knob she peeked in, "Hello?"

That speech she'd carefully prepared ad gone over mentally word by word as she waited? Vanished the second Misaki openned the door.

"Hey...you should come in." She said lamely instead, concentrating very hard on zipping and unzipping her pencil case.

"Um, all right," Misaki came in and pulled out the bracelt. She held it out. "Here...I think this is yours."

Misaki looked at her, "I don't want this back Akuba-san. Not...Not until I can be real friends with you. You told me I was just imaginary, and you were right. I was. I can't go back to being the Misaka that you knew, so...I think it wouldn't be right of me to accept this until I really earned your frindship properly."

Misaki gripped the bracelet and blinked some. She wanted more then anything to put it back on, it was what she had been hoping for but...if she took it back now, everything would be the same. "I have to earn the right to be your friend, not just...I can't just depend on you to be the person that gives me love or acceptance. I have to accept myself, right. And if I can't do that I just become a burden on you, and pretty much everyone else."

Maeko bit her lip. Inhaled. Exhaled. It all took a very long time.

She shook her head.

"I don't want you to go back to being the Misaki I knew. I want to try again, without deciding who you are for you. I want to learn who you really are and if you don't know that either then we can find out together. I don't think I've ever worked out what I want to be, either. Maybe we'll work this stuff out quicker if there's two of us."

And sigh.

"Friendship isn't something that can be earned or bought or even just given. If you think that way I don't think you'll ever be friends with anyone because you'll never be equals. It's shared." Misaki might have recognised this part. Maeko had stolen it word-for-word from a shoujo manga she'd borrowed once.

Misaki blinked, was that from...she started to giggle but cry at the same time. "And the path to that is never an easy one followed but it's what makes it stronger."

She nodded her head and looked at the bracelet. "Does....that mean that we can try again? I know I wasn't the best before but...I missed you so much Maeko-chan. I...didn't think that I could ever talk to you about what I was feeling because I thought that it would break what you saw with me. I...I'm not perfect, and I'm a needy person. I'm going to try harder okay. I'm going to try harder not to be jealous of Sempai. I just...I didn't want him to replace me. When you told me you didn't want to be friends, it just broke my heart."

Misaki clenched it tight, "I don't want another best friend ever because...you...you're the person I was waiting for since I was small, and I thought...I thought I had lost you forever. I was so scared when you became a shadow, but I tried to be happy because i thought that's what you wanted. But I should have just listened to myself and told you off the bat that I thought it was a dumb idea to split up, since it wouldn't help anything."

She looked up at Maeko, "Can you forgive me for being the way I was?"

Maeko nodded.

"Of course. Can you?"

After a little longer she paused for a second and "Hey, pass me the bracelet after all, okay? You've got to tie it now and I think it'd be hard to do that with one hand."

Misaki nodded some, "I think I...I can..."

She wiped her eyes and held out her wrist to her and was starting to bluber again. Passing the bracelet to her Misaki whispered an, "Okay..." as her voice was starting to crack.

Maeko carefully tied the ribbon in a double bow so it wouldn't come undone easily, taking care not to make it too tight or loose enough to fall off. When she was done she pulled her sleeve up a little to show her own bracelet.

"Hey, what? Don't cry..." Maeko patatted her blazer pockets, eventually producing a handkerchief and holding it out. "Here."

"I know but..." Misaki sniffled some and took it. "It just makes me happy that you...you want to be friends with me still. Maeko-chan."

She looked at the bracelet and smiled. "I'll take extra good care of it. I'm not going to take it off."

Misaki looked down, "Do...do you want to walk back to the flower shop with me? I mean it's cool if you have other plans...I just, wanted to talk you know."

"Just...what happened between us. And, well, how we can work on it. You know. So that it doesn't happen again." Misaki blushed some and smiled.

"If you don't want to that's okay. Oh and I wanted to show you that movie I mentioned...er...the Princess Bride. I think you might like it. It's very funny. Wesley is as dramatic as Kanaye-sempai."

"Well it's true. He's very dramatic going," Misaki posed ala Kanaye if he had a sword in hand. "You see this isn't my best hand either."

She giggled and titled her head, "I...I was wondering if, well, were you going to join the drama club too? It would be a lot of fun, and I think Sempai would be really happy if you did. I...I'd like it to. They could use someone like you Maeko-chan. Er...it is okay to call you that again?"

Maeko laughed. Mostly forced, but most of her laughs were. They were pretty convincing by now.

"Of course it's okay. Can I call you Misa-chan?" She responded, leaning back and thinking. "I didn't know you were in the drama club..."

But Kanaye was also in the drama club. She would prefer not to. (Was that at all the right way around? Surely her boyfriend being in a club should make her want to join more? Oh well.) She didn't really see what they could use her for anyway. A tree?

"Acting? I...don't really think I can do that. I'd forget all the lines or not be able to speak or..."

Misaki paused, "Don't do that Maeko-chan. Please, don't. If it's not funny just say so."

Misaki rubbed her neck some and smiled, "Sure if you want to. And sort of. I'm helping with the costumes."

She looked thoughtful, "Um...well if you don't want to you don't have to. But theres's things you could do there that have no connection to acting. Like helping with sets, or the lights, or managing the stage and stuff."

Misaki blushed and started to walk some then walked back and took Maeko's hand, "Lets do something you want to do. Okay?"

"I-it was funny!" Maeko said, nodding furiously.

"I don't think I'd be very good at any of those things..." She tigged at her hair a little. "Besides, I spend a lot of time with senpai anyway. If I joined the same club he might get mad and thing I was stalking him or something."

She took Misa's hand, squeezing it. She had no idea what to suggest, she hadn't done anything other than working in a while.

"We could get cake?" She suggested lamely.

Misaki put a hand on Maeko's shoulder, "Maeko chan, if it's not funny to you it's okay. I would rather find a joke that actually makes you laugh then one that you're forcing yourself to laugh about."

Misaki looked thoughtful, "You wouldn't be stalking him. I'm in the same club with Keiikun. And I think that he'd like you there, he could show off then."

Misaki giggled, "Perfect! Were would you like to go then?"

Maeko shrugged. "It's fine. It's normal to laugh when people make jokes."

"You were in the same club as Ito-san before. I think it's different joining after..."

She brightenned up again, swinging Misaki's arm. "I think the bakery at the top of noodle alley has cute cakes. How about there?"

"But it's not normal to laugh when you don't really think it's funny. It's like forcing yourself to find something amusing. If you don't want me doing that, just say so, okay Maeko-chan." Misaki smiled and grinned at the squeeze.

"It wouldn't be. If you like drama then join, if you don't like it then don't. Just come and look at it, okay."

She laughed happily and swung her arm back, "Yes Yes! I like the way they decorate them."

"...okay, I will." Maeko said, nodding less enthuseastically. Communicating that something wasn't funny? Unheard of!

"I guess. I'll come help you out if things get busy and you need help but I'm not sure I have time to be a permanent member anyway..."

She grinned. "Then we'll go there, then!"

Misaki nodded and smiled, "I'm glad to hear that. I just..." she paused and looked at Maeko gently. "I just want you to be honsest with me, Maeko-chan. I don't want you to say you like something just because, I like it. We don't have to like the same things all the time."

Again Misaki nodded, "Good...I just want to spend some time with you."

Misaki twirled her hair with her finger some and grined, "Yup, and can I pay please! I still have some extra birthday money."

Maeko squeezed Misaki's hand again and smiled. "I'll try. The whole things a little new to me..."

"You don't have to do that. Oh, but-" She paused, digging around in her bag with the free hand until she produced a piece of paper.

"It's a club registation form. I don't really have that many interests of my own right now but if you like the idea I think I'd like to help out with something like this."

She handed the paper to Misaki. At the top, the words 'textile design club' were filled in, along with a room number. Maeko's own name was on the form, but as a prospective member rather than club leader.

"I'm glad, and I know it's hard. It's hard for me too," she blushed some. "I'm going to have to tell people when I need help and take time to be by myself and take care fo me. It's so weird being worried about myself rather then the people around me."

"Huh..what's this?" Misaki took the form and looked "Texitle design club? But Maeko-chan I didn't think you liked clothing and...why is the top for president blank?"

"I've never really had any hobbies. I don't know what I like. But I figured this would be a good way to try out something new and maybe learn about the things you like." She said, nodding. "Because I don't really know all that much about it. I can hardly be expected to lead something like that."

"Well then we have to find things that you like to do Maeko-chan!" Misaki nodded firmly. "It's only fair right?"

She again looked at the sheet and wasn't sure what to say, "But...who were you seeing as the leader then?"

Misaki opened the door to the shop to let Maeko in.

"I won't know unless I try it!" Maeko said, nodding. She was showing more enthuseasm for this than she'd shown for much else in the last year or so, though that wasn't a difficult feat. "Worst that'll come of it is that I get bored and quit and the school's stuck with a new club."

Maeko laughed. "You really didn't work it out by now? I thought you were supposed to be smarter than I thought you were."

Misaki gave her a big grin and giggled some, "I can just see Gendou-semapi's face when he sees this. He's going to be wondering what came over you."

Misaki was glad that Maeko was energetic. It was nice to see her feeling happy, something that she had missed seeing a lot. The pink haired one blushed some and nodded, "I did, I just...why choose me? I mean...I would love to, but would people join if I'm leader? They look up to you a lot more Maeko-chan."

Maeko shrugged. "Wonder if he'll be disappointed that I won't have time to deal with all the council's odd jobs. He'll need to find a new workdog."

"Well from what I heard Tonbo-sempai wanted to work with him. Though I really don't know why." Misaki said as she looked over the cakes. "Which one do you want Maeko-chan?"

"Well, it's just...I'm a freshman for one thing, and for another thing people think I'm an airhead. Why would they want to listen to someone who's been acting like I have?" Misaki told her honestly, even though inwardly she winced some at having to admit that fact.

"Really? Can't imagine why anyone'd want that..." She stopped for a second to look at the cakes. "Ah! I'm going to get the strawberry one!"

"They'd listen because you're good at what the club's about and that's what counts. I can handle the organization stuff for you, s'what I'm best at I guess, but I can't lead something that I don't know anything about.

"pfff," Misaki tried to keep from laughing and then burst out. "Maeko-chan. You can be so cute at times. Strawberry it is! Hip hip horray! And I'm taking Cherry cheesecake!"

Misaki nodded, "You, have a point. But what can I start things out with? I mean, I'm going to have to guess that there are going to be good sewers and people like Masami-chan who have never done it before. Hum...Maybe something simple like a pillow cover to see where everyone is? It's an easy enough item to make and wouldn't cost much."

She blushed them, "But but...I should really let other people tell me what they want to make. A...A leader can't just jump the gun like that."

"Speaking of leaders, Maeko-chan, what do you think of Kiriko as a leader. I was...disscussing with Kanaye-sempai about her, and he doesn't feel that she's good at it. But I disagree, I just...I wonder how the others feel about her." Misaki asked quietly as the lady came over and she said quickly, "Um...one strawberry cake and one cherry cheese cake please."

"Maybe let people work on what they want? It doesn't have to be organized into group projects, it can just be a good environment for people to work on things and see what other people are doing."

She switched to a more hushed voice as the cake lady got the cake.

"Ikeda-san's...if we were going to have a leader then I think she's the most qualified simply by virtue of being having the guts to talk to Reizo." She sighed. "But considering the gravity of the situation? I think it's unfair to anyone to force them to be responsible. It's far too much stress to expect someone to be able to deal with even without considering how the group acts sometimes."

[info]pinksunbeam
2009-11-07 06:42 pm UTC (link)
"Yeah, and if they want to do a big group project then we could." Misaki nodded. "I'm going to have to ask Keiikun how he sets up our cooking schedule." She glanced at Maeko, 'Do you think I can honestly do this? Be a leader I mean?"

Misaki lowered her voice too, "She seems to know what she's doing. But how can we help her, and Shirai-san's not too hard to talk to, he's just...serious a lot of the time. There's some good in him, the same with Kazuya-sempai. I just wish that other people would see that."

She sighed, "I know what you mean. It's like...they don't think about anything else but themself."

"That'd be a good idea, yeah." Maeko said. "I don't see why you wouldn't be able to."

She paused and frowned and chose not to respond when Kazuya was mentionned. Much as Misaki seemed to like him she was pretty sure she wasn't supposed to approve of people who attacked her boyfriend. She was even starting to have trouble with violence as a first resort in general recently.

"I want a leader just as much as everyone else does. Someone whose instructions we can follow and know it'll turn out okay as long as we do exactly what we're told. But it's not worth causing that much stress to someone else."

"It's just that I worry that I'd want to fix their mistakes, and that I might be too good at sewing to be a leader." She blushed and sighed. "I have the uniforms for the Cheer squad to complete too. But that shouldn't be too bad..."

Misaki got the cakes and handed one to Maeko as she pulled out her money, "OH! Did sempai mention that Suzume-chan is getting us a cheer squad for the teams?"

"But for that we need a plan, and the problem is it's a lot of improvising when we get in there," Misaki pointed out. "Hummmm maybe more then one person helping Kirkio. Like, instead of her just leading everyone, maybe there could be like sub groups that do specific things. Like a group that looks over what we've figured out so far and tries to figure out what the connection is."

Maeko nodded. "You shouldn't fix the mistakes youself but I don't think there's anything wrong with pointing them out and showing people how to fix them.

"Suzu- oh, her? He didn't mention it, no. I heard about it, though." Cake was more interesting than that topic by far. She looked arounf for an empty table as she spoke.

"Seperate groups didn't work out so well before." She said, in a tone that indicated that that topic was done with.

Misaki nodded and motioned to a table after she paid for both their peices. "Well I don't want to seem like a busy body you know. What if they take offense to it?"

"Oh, well, you know how I'm supposed to be managing the team and all that. Well in order to fix things up and not get into trouble with Ito-sempai, I said I would join. So I said I would make the uniforms. Yoshimi-chan is joining and Kozue-chan too." Misaki smiled, "I was wondering if you'd come and watch us when we first preform."

Misaki slowly nodded, "I still think we need to start to look over who got taken and what happened. There has to be a connection there. It's bothering me. Like...it's like a book, you read only a chapter a night but you want to skip ahead to see who the killer actually is."

Misaki nudged her cake around, "Um...by the way Maeko-chan...would...Never mind I should wait to ask you about that."

"I don't see why they would. You'd just be trying to help them." Maeko set the cake down at the table and sat, removing the strawberry from the top of the cake to eat it last.

"I guess something like that would suit you." She said. "I mean, if anything can convince people to all cheer up and get along..."

"You'd be better off talking to Sagaki-senpai about that." Maeko said icily. Misaki may have been her friend but that made it no less distasteful to compare this to a story. And that was it, it wasn't like she was insulted by the implication that she hadn't already been doing that and that her own efforts were so meaningless it didn't count.

She moved on to the next topic quickly. "Just say it."

"It's just that sometimes people don't realize you're just trying to help and get easily offended." Misaki said softly and smiled. "You still do that. Ever since middle school you always picked those off and made sure you ate them last."

Misaki shook her head, "I can try but...I can't even convince anyone in our group to be...well..."

"Ah...No no! Maeko-chan I didn't mean it like that," she instictively grabbed Maeko by the hand and looked at her. "I just ment that, like...I'm not good at explaining it. It's like...I want to know who's doing this so that it doesn't keep happening. I think all the time about how...How I should have done things differently then maybe...you wouldn't have..." Misaki blushed and pulled back some, "You and the others, you do so much when it comes to this. I just...I worry that, considering how my shadow acted apparently, the next one might actually kill someone. And I really really don't want that to happen. That's all."

Misaki swallowed, "Um...I was just thinking...maybe we could try that room mate thing again...That is if you want to."

"Why wouldn't I? The strawberries are the best part." Maeko said, taking a small forkfull of the cake itself.

"The group's...difficult." Maeko settled on. "I wouldn't worry about it too much. We're getting the rescues done and people came to help when it was dangerous.

"It's fine. But there's no sense worrying over what's already happenned." She said, sighing. "Sagaki-senpai's pretty obsessive over it. I don't think there's much he'd miss. But you could go ask him if you were concerned."

Maeko smiled and nodded. "Of course."

Misaki giggled at that, "I would disagree with you there there, since I like cheeries a bit more. But strawberries are good too."

"Difficult and they can be, what's the word for it...when you think you know something but...You don't." Misaki mutterd some, she took a bite of her own cake and sighed, "But it shouldn't just be about that. I mean, we're different in a way. I'd at least like to know, you know, why us."

She gave a short nod as she twirled around the cake, "Maybe I get this from my mom. You know, trying to go over details in my head..." Misaki looked a bit worried. "She's been making calls recently. I don't know to whom, but she seems very determined about something."

At the last comment Misaki looked up, blinked twice then was suddenly leaning over the table to hug Maeko and grinning so brightly that the lights in the room couldn't outshine her. "Really?! You mean it?! I can!"

"No way! The strawberry's way better!" Maeko said, pausing for eat her forkful of cake.

"I don't know why it's us, but it's not the important thing right now. everyone's safety comes first."

"You should find out what it's about." Maeko said, setting the fork down and thinking. "If it's something that's a problem it can be dealt with sooner rather than later.

She was suddenly very glad she had set her fork down, narrowly missing being pulled into the cake. She laughed. "Of course you can!"

Misaki giggled some, "Thank you thank you! You're the best best friend ever! You mean so much to me you know that Maeko-chan!"

She let her go after a moment and sat back down, thinking about what she said about not worrying about it. Misaki nodded some and tilted her head. "Do you think that we're the only ones? I mean, could something like this have happened before?"

"I've been trying to, but with the exams coming up I've been trying to study harder too. I want to get good grades on it so I can actually show her that I can do well and not have to be in some science or math field to get good grades," Misaki explained. "Mom's been really aiming for the presidents seat lately. I don't know how to get her to actually listen to me. I've tried emailing, texting, calling, I even went over the other day and she was 'Too busy to talk. I'm working out your future since you can't.' That's what she told me."

"Hey, it's no problem!" Maeko said, laughing again. "It was getting lonely anyway."

"I...well it depends if those angels people mentionned were personae or not, I guess. I think we're the only ones, though."

She thought. "Should I try to talk to her some time? I think she'd at least humour me...and I'm pretty sure I can word the fashion club as something academic-sounding enough."

"Really? I..." Misaki blushed some, "I was lonely too. I don't know why but knowing that you missed me, makes me feel a bit happy Maeko-chan."

"What happened with them? I mean I heard about it, but what were they? Why would they want to hurt us." She asked a worried look on her face. "Do you think they're the ones that keep putting us in Paradise?"

"Good luck with that," Misaki took a hard bite with her fork. "In her mind anything to do with fashion or arts is a 'folly' and a 'waste of money'. I guess she's worried that I'm going to wind up doing nothing and be a lazy butt or something."
