Pre-meeting meeting
Who: Kiriko & Tom
What: Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
When: Before the meeting
Where: The Butterfly Room
Why: How can you host a meeting without preparing?

It's fairly obvious by the neat spread of paper across the desk (was that there the last time?) that Kiriko isn't one for idle waiting. She'd brought (and now emptied) a folder with notes scribbled in a million different pen colours and while waiting was consilidating everything into a master sheet. Or, the backup of a master sheet - the master sheet she intended to use for the meeting was waiting nearby with nothing but a friendly header designating its importance. The sheet of paper she was frowning at now was only her first attempt at paring down the overextensive notes-to-self and book exerpts that comprised the majority of the information she'd brought.

When Tom arrived she looked up and greeted him with an impassive nod, then began to clear off some of the desk in the space in front of the chair opposite her.

Tom entered with the black bag he usually carried, and set it down on the empty chair. He returned the nod, halfheartedly and glanced at the papers.

"I hadn't figured anyone else would have done that much research, but I can't say I'm surprised, you've always been... seemed like a well organized person."

He took the opportunity to look around the "Butterfly Room", once again taking it all in with some curiosity. Touching the walls, the furniture, and letting out an unsatisfied "hmmpf" at the whole thing.

Kiriko quirked a brow. She wasn't supposed to remember what he had said to her (or her shadow) back in the gym, but she did, and regardless of his intention she was not feeling particularly inclined to forgive him for those comments, which only brought the present compliment under sharper scrutiny. She said nothing and turned her eyes back to the papers.

"Take a look at this. Tell me if I've missed anything."

Notes about Paradise, the confirmation that the previous deaths had been murders, Aomori's supicions, the angels, the butterfly were all crowded together in neat, feminine handwriting on the sheet of lined paper she handed to Tom.

"What I really wanted to ask you about was the 'angels.'"

Tom walked over to Kiriko and carefully took the paper from her. He read over it in silence for a moment, then spoke.

"The deaths of Aomori and Sato both have a minor connection to Ishino."

He looked up at Kiriko.

"It may not matter but in investigation every detail could be important."

He took the bag from the chair and looked at the seat for a moment, he looked back to Kiriko, and then took a breath, siting down, and trying to not to look uncomfortable.

"What about the angels? I do have a full write up on each one if you'd like to see it."

"Ishino-sensei?" Kiriko looked surprised. Her? Really? Ishino didn't seem like the type who could pull off a murder... then agian, Ishino didn't seem like the type who could keep her shoes tied.

"Let me see the write-ups?" She assumed the Ishino explanation would come unbidden as she took the folder from Tom, immediately flipping it open and skimming.

Tom pulled a file out of his bag and handed it to her.

"This is the mythology behind the three we saw. Micheal, Gaberiel, and Uriel. Judging by the texts the missing one would have been Rapheal.

That's just the mythology though. I have another file on angelic beings as possible extraterrestrials."

Tom felt slightly better with Kiriko's eyes on the paper instead of him.

"It's only a minor connection. There are rumors that Sato was attracted to Ishino, and of course he appeared in her classroom.
There are also rumors that say Aomori was involved with her, those seem more plausable. She denied all of it, which leads me to think she was lying."

Involved with Aomori? Adamant refusal seemed like the appropriate response to an allegation like that. Kiriko didn't say this, however. Instead, she finished skimming the file and set it down on the desk, pulling up one of her own sheets of paper instead.

"Do you remember what they said, though? They said they were responsible for everything... and they said they were going to kill us for using Personas. Don't you think it makes the most sense that they're the force that's pulling people in and getting them stuck there?"

She didn't look at him as she said this and continued to frown at the paper, but she lifted her eyes after she was done.

"... Actually, I just wanted to ask why you reacted the way you did. I mean, I guess you know more about angels and stuff - you're Christian, too, right? - but I didn't really understand what was going down." Possibly because I was busy bargaining for my life, but...

Tom shook his head.

"I'm not a Christain, but you should see how some people treat that in the U.S. I'd just had a passing interest in concepts like Divine Law, and Natural law, so I'd done the research independently.

Also part of why I didn't buy them being divine beings.

I've since looked into it more thoroughly, for obvious reasons."

Tom shifted slightly in his chair, and looked around the room, recalling his yelling at the angels and how it ended up with them being there.

"Obviously us having Persona's upset their plans. And there has to be more to it then offing the staff and students of Nanakamado. It's a possibility that they could be our killer. They could also have all been a set up so we would trust the butterfly. There's no easier way to convince someone you're on their side, and really, no one ever suspects the butterfly.

There are other possibilities, but well there's no way to know until I pin down more information on... all of this.

Though as far as the way I reacted, I was hoping to goad them into attacking me. I thought if I could get them to direct their attack at just me while I was close to the bars it would give you all an opening to escape, or at least more room to make a running fight to get out of Paradise."

Kiriko just nodded her head through the first part. Uh, Divine Law? Natural law? She marked both off as "Foreigner stuff" and stowed them in the back of her mind.

She had considered the butterfly was a lie... But on the other hand, it was hard to feel that way about something that spoke in her own voice.

"I don't know about that," Kiriko frowned. "It seems like it was the truth. Doesn't this place just... feel safe to you? I guess there's never any guarentee, but..."

She lapsed into silence and thought on this, ignoring the explanation of the escape plan. It sounded stupid to her, anyway - and also like a conveninet way to cover for emotional outburst.

"One of them said something funny. It was the girl... Do you remember what it was?"

"It does feel safe, even more of a reason to be suspect. I assume you don't want me to list the number of ways in which predators attempt a similar effect upon their prey, but I will point out that the possibility of emotional manipulation was brought up."

Tom put a finger to his chin.

"There is another possibility I'd been thinking on. That being, due to the high number of coincidences surrounding all of this. If there is a very powerful being out there with angel servants who is trying to kill us, then maybe there is some thing out there that opposes that, and is putting together it's own army to stop it.

That army being... us."

He leaned back in his chair and watched he wondered if Kiriko would have given him a similar speech to the one Kozue did, but Kiriko just stayed quiet. Tom smiled inwardly. He had worried when Kiriko asked him to talk privately, but even with so many others were claiming "friendship" he could always count on Ikeda for completely undisguised hatred.

"She claimed that this was her true form, and the other was just a disguise."

Tom nodded.

"It does imply that the angels have a cover identity outside of Paradise. If the butterflies comments can be taken at face value then it's likely that those identities are not only in this world, but specifically here at this school in our lives. And well, even if the butterfly was lying, it's still a pretty good bet."

"What, like... We're an army for that butterfly thing? But the butterfly was... us."

She frowned. Kiriko wasn't too keen on the idea of being used by some other cosmic force, and of course none of it answered the most prominent question: Why her? She couldn't see any pattern in who had been chosen beyond the fact that they all went to Nanakamado... and that they were all being targeted. Maybe this was a ransom thing from someone in the real world. Lots of things were about money, right? Why not the supernatural?

That didn't fit either.

"A cover identity, right," she sighed. "What do you think about that?"

"If the Butterfly spoke in our heads with our voices, that doesn't make it us. Any being who chooses to manifest as a Butterfly to communicate is going to do so in an interesting manner.

Of course since he's listening in right now, I don't know that discussing it is the best of plans."

Tom tapped the table and thought about the angels.

"It does make pretty good sense. I haven't found a mention of Paradise anywhere. No news reports, no comments on the internet. If no one else is saying anything it's a good bet that paradise is local.

Which means that so is our killer, and so are our angels. Which would definitely put them in a position to be the killer.
That still leaves us absent a motive."

He leaned back in his chair and thought for a moment.

"Maybe there is something about the people targeted, they know something or can do something, they have the potential to be a threat, and so they're both being recruited and targeted.

If we're extremely lucky, they can't use their powers on this side either, which means they can only use manipulation and physical attacks.
I wish we knew more about them. I was thinking about asking Akuba if she remembered anything, maybe her shadow did make a deal with them?

They may just try and turn everyone against each other. I guess that would mean everyone on your team should be careful. Especially when talking to someone they don't recognize.

And you don't have to worry about me so..."

Tom's expression hardened.

"Them coming after everyone in the group can be used against them. They can't attack without exposing their disguises. They need to make the move, which means that we have the opportunity to chose the ground we fight on. They may also think the team is dead, which is why they haven't come after everyone yet.
They'll figure it out very soon, if they haven't already but it allows time to gather information and prepare a counter attack."

For the moment she ignored the premises she considered faulty - she had her eye on the clock and they didn't have a great deal of time left. The important part had already come out in the open.

"So you do think these are people in Iburi, right?"

She frowned.

"They're targeting us, but they've been doing it one at a time so far, and never the same person twice. Maybe it's just because two disappearances in a row would look suspicious, but other than that... why?

"And more importantly, should we be looking for these people..? Or just trying to stay safe and wait it out? Should we stop using our Personas, and then maybe everything would stop?"

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

"I think the alter egos of the angels are most definitely in Iburi.

And I agree that the picking people off one at a time then never trying again is strange. The motives of all of the groups enemies are a complete unknown."

Tom took a breath, and let it out slowly, leaning back.

"I can't tell you how to run things. So I won't say that looking for them is the best course of action. Personally I would rather do that alone, then the risk if they get found is just on me.

But people were dying in Paradise before anyone even got a persona. And the angels weren't even willing to bargain with you a little bit.

And they had a plan to kill you. Not the throw you into Paradise and not worry about it plan, but the show up and attack directly plan. That's premeditated, and Anyone who puts that much effort into planning a murder is not going to be talked out of it, certainly not by their victims."

Tom looked away for a moment, and then looked back, he looked uncomfortable at having to admit it, but spoke none the leas.

"And in all honesty, if I were them, even without your personas, I'd still be scared of the group, and what it can do."

The eyebrow went up at the first mention of "I'd rather do it alone" and it was practically into her hairline by the time he reached the "I'd still be scared of the group" part.

"Why?"

They couldn't do anything without their Personas. Well, that wasn't true. Keiichi could cook and Reizo could punch people and she could spread some pretty mean rumours among other things, but none of those seemed quite on-par with combatting paranormal threats.

She sighed and shook her head before he could answer. That line of thought really wasn't worth pursuing.

"My other thought is, do you think it's possible that they can't hurt us here in the real world? I mean, that would explain why people get taken away to Paradise."

Tom leaned forward, and extended his hands as he explained.

"Okay, admittedly, they aren't much now. The team is fractured, most of them are self involved, they don't really know what their facing.
But everyone gets stronger with each fight. In your dungeon at least half of the group were without personas and the team still made it through.
But look at Ishinomori, what he's become versus what he was like just a few weeks ago."

Tom shrugged.

"I'm not saying anything would ever come from it. But the group has the potential to be really dangerous if they ever realized it. And even if it's highly unlikely that that potential would be realized, if my enemies had that potential, I would want to take them out as soon as possible."

Finally he rubbed the back of his neck, and leaned back again.

"It does seem likely that they can't hit us in this world. That would explain the need for disguises and Paradise, which means they'll try to mess with everyone's heads, manipulate and trick each person so they know exactly how to exploit them."

Tom nodded toward Kiriko.

"You may have some competition."

Kiriko leaned back in her chair and folded her arms across her chest, considering what he was saying. Strength in eachother. That's more or less what the butterfly said, right? And he had a point about Ishinomori.

The last sentence pulled Kiriko from her reverie with a bump.

"Excuse me?"

She narrowed her eyes.

"What are you trying to say about me, exactly?"

Tom gave Kiriko a questioning look.

"That you're smart, devious, clever, cunning, capable of maneuvering a target exactly where you want them.

I mean, how many women in this country can claim they got out of their arranged marriage without just running away? How many people in this school can get Shirai to do anything? Sure you know him, but what buttons to push doesn't mean your any less skilled at pushing them.

Even I can't figure you out half the time. that You could probably convince people living at the south pole that they need air conditioning."

Kiriko's wary expression stayed. Those were all compliments, certainly, but directly at odds with what he'd said about her before. Besides her mistrust in him, she wasn't one to put a lot of stock in praises so easily sung. And, once again, there was that Shirai thing...

Wait, Shirai thing?

Her eyes narrowed further.

"How did you know about how I got out of my arranged marriage?"

Tom looked at Kiriko confused, he wiped a finger past his brow.

"You said you were going to get out of it. You told everyone not to worry, remember? And then you did. I don't actually know how you did it."

Tom rested his head on his chin. He reminded himself that just because Ikeda didn't like him, it didn't mean that he could completely let his guard down.

"Either way, There are more important things to worry about right? Anyone who isn't a persona user is a potential danger."

She leaned back in her chair again. Way to jump to conclusions, Kiriko. Her eyes settled back on the paper as she did her best not to call attention to that defensive outburst.

"Anyone who is a persona user is in danger. That seems to be the more pressing issue, to me."

Tom blinked at Kiriko. And reminded himself that it's more important to protect the innocent then punish the guilty.

"You're right. If everyone can recognize potential persona users by sight, then locating them should be a top priority.

Anytime I find one, I'll try and get them to you or one of the team members so the situation can be explained to them."
