Who: Maeko, Kanaye
What: Apologising.
Where: Kanaye's house.
When: Evening, day after dungeon.
Why: She works there?

If nothing else, Maeko was stubborn. Given the circumstances she could probably have been forgiven for not showing up at school or work the day after all of that. But the one thing she really had to build on if she intended to fix anything at all was being a hard worker. If she wasn't working hard she didn't really have much at all.

She'd not been a great deal of use during her shift. Her excuse to Ishino-sensei and the school nurse for the state of her hands had involved claiming she'd had an alegic reacton to a soap and scratched them up in her sleep. Apparently the solution to that was the medical equivelant of mittens and now she could hardly move her hands at all. Still, she'd tried her best. She just had one more thing to do. Apologizing.

She pulled her coat on over her uniform, less because it was cold and more to avoid the other staff assuming she was still on duty, and knocked on Kanaye's door quietly.

"Senpai, are you in?"

"I stopped becuase I needed to use the time to study before the end-of year exams." Maeko said, looking up mostly because not looking where you were going when ascending stairs was always a bad idea. Which was somewhat true. True enough. She'd stopped around that time, anyway, and having the extra study time probably made a difference. It wasn't quite as true as the fact that she'd eventually just got mad about not being noticed when other people were and given up but it sounded more resonable.

"Okay then!" She added, a little too enthuseastic about the minor subject change. "Exams aren't for a long time yet, so I will!"

"Ah. Speaking of which, if you need any help whatsoever, just ask me alright? I'm not exactly the top of my class but I'll do what I can." Kanaye said, smiling and nodding. He expected that there was more to this story, but he wasn't going to pry at MAEKO of all people.

"That's the spirit, Maeko-chan! I'm really thankful." he said happily, he smiling actually becoming sincere. Not wanting the conversation to lapse into awkward silence again, he spoke up. "So, why'd you join the Anti-Bullying club? I know it hasn't really been meeting nowadays, but it's quite kind of you to help people out."

And that was a question that wasn't getting an honest answer. Even if she had promised herself that she'd be honest from now on, 'because I felt bad that I drove my best friend to try to kill herself' was a surefire conversation killer.

"The councellor mentionned it to the student council before anyone else when he started it up last year. I guess I agreed with what it was trying to do." She shook her head. "Not so much now, though. I want to be able to fix the problems, not just sit there and listen when people talk about them."

Kanaye nodded quickly. "Indeed. I like the idea, but it doesn't work out too well in practice. There's Hamasaki-sensei for that. Granted, he's horrible at his job, but then again..." he trailed off, shrugging. "Still probably better then what we could do."

Kanaye finished walking up the steps, and he looked around at the false cherry blossom petals. Even if they were fake, they looked like the real thing, and they were pretty enough. It was perfectly enough for him and Maeko. "You want to find someplace to sit?" he asked.

"I don't think there's much a club like that could do about it. It's not like we have any authority of anything. Even if we did, I doubt we could tell Shirai-san 'hey, stop that' and have him do anything but laugh."

She nodded, looking around. This was the one place in the city that didn't change, even with the seasons. "Yeah."

Kanaye sighed. "Yeah. Why the hell does he even bother coming anyway? It can't be out of the goodness of his heart...you think he and Kiriko are going out? It would explain a lot."

He smiled at her, then led her to the nearest bench. As he sat down, he realized he had no idea what to actually do. He would hold her hand, as it seemed like a good way to get things started, but her hands were in those mittens...He eventually compromised but just leaning on her slightly, blushing. "It's nice here, isn't it?" he asked, dreamily.

Maeko shrugged. "I always figured he just wanted something to punch and shadows don't complain so much. I never thought anything was hapenning with him and Kiriko."

She nodded, carefully placing one tightly wrapped hand on top of Kanaye's. "It always is. I don't know why I don't visit this place more often."

Kanaye hummed in agreement, all thoughts of everything but Maeko purged from his mind. The wrappings were kind of a downer, but it's not like he was going to complain. She needed them, anyway. "The cherry blossoms are romantic, don't you think?" he asked.

"They're nice." Maeko said, sort of agreeing. Unable to think of a new conversation topic she decided to stare at them instead. "I'm glad we came here."

Kanaye was glad that Maeko couldn't think of anything either, but she had enough of silence at home. Maybe... "So am I. If there's anything you want to tell me at all, just do so. I'll listen." Kanaye said happily, nodding. After a moment, he continued. "Or we could just enjoy each others company, that works as well."

Maeko stopped for a second. He'd said that back there, too. And after a few second she decided that there was something that she needed to talk about. She pulled her legs up, putting her heels on the edge of the bench, and leaned on her knees.

"I think I should stop being around Misa-chan."

Kanaye quirked an eyebrow. Really? "Why? If it's because of guilt over what that shadow said, don't worry about it. She wouldn't hold a grudge about something like this. Besides, you two are best friends. You can't let something like this get you down."

Maeko shook her head. "We're not. Everything...everything 'I' said to her in that place was true. I was just staying around her out of guilt and she just didn't have anyone better. I'm stopping her from becoming capable of fuctionning on her own and she's letting me use her as an excuse not to change. Continuing something like that's only going to cause problems for both of us."

Kanaye nodded slowly. "Alright, Maeko-chan. If you insist. She's a nice girl, yeah, but she is kind of..." Kanaye didn't know what to say. Stupid wasn't exactly correct, naive is better but it's not strong enough. "Odd." he decided on. "Very odd. I mean, pink hair? Really. If you think it's for the best, it's for the best. And if it isn't? Well, that's life for you. We make fools of ourselves. It's the fun part of life."

Kanaye wasn't sure how to take this information. On one hand, seeing Maeko without Misaki would be an interesting experiance. On the other hand, Maeko not being friends with Misaki would mean she would spend more time with him. "You two share a dorm room, right? What're you going to do now?" he asked, thinking. Kanaye doubted he could invite Maeko to live at his house, but it was still a valid question.

"Yeah. If nothing else it'll be a change." Maeko said, nodding. The more she thought about and discussed this the more it seemed like the correct thing to do.

"I guess we'll just be roommates." She shrugged. "It's not like we have to be friends to live together. If it really starts being a problem I'll just go home again."

Kanaye laughed. "Change isn't always good, but you seem to want it. Who am I to argue?" he said, laughing again.

He shrugged, still smiling. "You have a point. It'd be kind of awkward, though. She'd probably keep asking you over and over again to be friends with her again. If you need me to talk to her in your stead, or just want to get me to back you up, just call me, alright? I'm there for you."

Maeko placed her feet back on the ground, leaning on Kanaye instead. She hadn't thought much about that.

"I don't think she'd do something like that. I'll be fine. Besides, it'd be kind of awful to have someone else say something like that, don't you think?"

Kanaye smiled again. Really, he just had the best thing in his life to happen to him. And he's talking about a completely different girl. Ah well, you win some you lose some. "Alright, Maeko-chan. No matter your choice, I'll respect that. I'm here for you now. Don't forget it."

Maeko smiled and nodded. She attemped to squeeze Kanaye's hand but oh yeah, bandages.

"Thanks. I'll talk to her about it soon, then." She paused, looking around. "Is it okay to stay here just a bit longer?"

Kanaye's face broke into an honest smile. This really was the best day of his life. "We can stay here as long as you want, Maeko-chan." he said softly into her ear. He leaned on her softly.
