Who: Maeko, Kanaye
What: Apologising.
Where: Kanaye's house.
When: Evening, day after dungeon.
Why: She works there?

If nothing else, Maeko was stubborn. Given the circumstances she could probably have been forgiven for not showing up at school or work the day after all of that. But the one thing she really had to build on if she intended to fix anything at all was being a hard worker. If she wasn't working hard she didn't really have much at all.

She'd not been a great deal of use during her shift. Her excuse to Ishino-sensei and the school nurse for the state of her hands had involved claiming she'd had an alegic reacton to a soap and scratched them up in her sleep. Apparently the solution to that was the medical equivelant of mittens and now she could hardly move her hands at all. Still, she'd tried her best. She just had one more thing to do. Apologizing.

She pulled her coat on over her uniform, less because it was cold and more to avoid the other staff assuming she was still on duty, and knocked on Kanaye's door quietly.

"Senpai, are you in?"

Kanaye was nervous. Today would be the day! He had the bracelet, Maeko was fine, and he had saved her? Surely this had to mean something? But, still, Kanaye was hesitant, to say the least, and absolutely panicking, to be more accurate, at the thought of actually confessing to Maeko. Most of this was due to his ridiculous trust issues, but the more reasonable part of his brain was panicking because Maeko never showed any real affection to him at all. Even if Misaki wasn’t lying when she said that Maeko had a crush on him a year ago, Maeko could have grown out of it by them. And even Misaki lying was a crapshoot, as she could have just said that to make him feel better. Still, he had to know, and if he got to be with his beloved in the meantime, that’s an excellent bonus.

He was broken out of his funk by a knocking on the door. He was about to tell the servant to shut up and go away, when Maeko spoke. Kanaye's eyes flew open in alarm. He wasn't ready! He was about to send her away when he got a hold of himself. He would do this or die trying...

He walked over to the door and opened it, leaning against the door in what he was hoping was a carefree and happy manner but looked more like him trying to look carefree and happy. Kanaye smiled and started talking. "Oh, hello Maeko-chan! Come in, come in!" The rational part of his brain started panicking (HER? In HIS ROOM?) but he ignored it. He was going to do this...

"Huh? Okay..." Maeko said, entering.

"...I thought I should apologise." She said, nodding to herself. "I was going to write a letter but, um-" She held up her hands for a second, feeling that she had a perfectly valid reason not to write a letter.

Kanaye laughed nervously, scratching the back of his head. "Don't worry about it! I'm fine, I don't have any problems with anything your shadow did. It's not you, after all. Well, technically it might be but still, it's not really and..." He started rambling. He smacked himself in the face. This wasn't the time for this... "Anyone, no problem. Besides, I wanted to see you anyway..."

Kanaye was going to do this, dammit, and nothing could stop him! He took a deep breath, then looked at Maeko. You can do this, you can do this… “Well, Maeko-chan, I just wanted to say something. I…I heard from Misaki that you knew sign language before Japanese, so…I…uh, asked her for some tips…” he said, stuttering. Kanaye shook his head. “I…actually mean this, ok, so don’t laugh!” he said hysterically before facepalming. “Let me try that again…”

He slowly, but surely, repeated the signs that Misaki showed him. He put his ring and pinky fingers down, spreading out the other three. “Su…” he said slowly. Then he put his middle, ring, and thumbs together, while putting the other two up. “…ki…” Kanaye was really getting irritated now, so he put all semblance of caution to the wind. He signed aishiteru as fast as he possibly could, saying each syllable as he signed it. When he finished, he sighed and sat down on the bed. “I love you, alright? I...just...” was all he could vocalize near the end.

He took out the bracelet, which is obviously a fine piece of work, as much as it could be on a few days notice. It was still pretty nice. "I didn't make it myself, I'm sorry..."

Maeko wasn't entirely sure what to think of...anything about the last fifteen seconds of her life, really. She carefully arranged them in order of 'what' in her mind. Sign language came first because anyone at all other than her family speaking to her in her own tongue was more alien to her than most of the things that had hapenned in paradise.

She appreciated the effort that he must have put into memorizing that. If it was anything like having to memorize japanese the other way around it was no small task. But the gesture itself was entirely unwelcome. She'd, at least for a while, been content to try to claw off her hands rather than speak in sign again. She didn't particularly want to be adressed in it. She had no right to complain, though. Kanaye had no way to know it was such a stupid, stupid language.

Then the message itself. Which probably should have been the first thing she focussed on. Too late now. That had been entirely unexpected. Kanaye had managed to make apologising for attempting to murder him multiple times even more awkward than it already was. And, whether she'd have liked to believe it or not, she didn't trust it.

"You're not joking, are you?" She asked carefully, deciding that in her brain's apparent failure to come up with a satisfactory response she'd just say the first thing that came to mind.

Kanaye sighed. "I knew you wouldn't take me seriously..." he started before standing up, looking at her, and waving his arms. "Yes! I'm serious! To I have to hug you to get the point across? A kiss? Just WHAT do I have to do to make you know that I'm being sincere!"

Kanaye had to admit, asking out Shiori was a lot easier. Then again, he was used to hard things. "I'm sorry if I'm being annoying." he finished, looking to the ground.

"Ah! Please don't take offense!" Maeko had realized only a few seconds after she'd spoken that that could maybe sound offensive. Oops.

"If you're serious then I'd be happy about that." She said, nodding.

"That you'd be...happy about that?" Kanaye asked, looking around. He was somewhat confused. This was not how he imagined it would go. He imagined it would either end up with them embracing, or her leaving in a huff. He did not expect this.

"Ok then..." Kanaye got his bearings at last. "You...want to go out sometime, then?" he asked, wincing. Lame... "I'm sorry, I know this is a shock, but..."

"Yeah." Maeko said, nodding. It had been (and was still) the most honest and least stupid thing that came to mind.

She nodded. A yes or no question, far easier. "Of course! That would be great."

And then as an afterthought. "Um, that's fine. Sorry for, you know, not thinking you were serious?"

Kanaye started grinning like a loon. "Great!" he shouted, hugging her. He quickly let go, trying to regain a sense of dignity. "Uh...where do you want to go? I wouldn't know, really..."

He smiled sheepishly at her apology. "No problem. I can't blame you, I couldn't believe me either, really."

"I was meaning to go to the skypark at some point." Maeko said, thinking. It was technically true, though mostly it was just the first place that wasn't Kigakiga that came to mind. "Is that a good place?"

Kanaye smiled and nodded quickly. Cherry blossoms petals were nice. "Of course! That's an excellent idea, Maeko-chan. When shall we go? Now, or do you want a rest from excitement for a bit?" he asked, happy. "I wouldn't blame you."

It didn't take much thought. Even if this was a joke, a possibility that she wasn't quite ready to strike off, the other option was going home and siting in a room with Misaki and not talking. It was awkward and altogether too familiar. If this turned out to be a joke it would be no more awkward and she'd have the right to be angry about it. Either way it was better.

"We can go now, if you want. You're okay, right?" Rest of sentence: 'I did sort of try to kill you more times than I've ever tried to talk to you yesterday, after all'.

Kanaye could do nothing but nod, smiling. This was the best day of his life! "I'm fine, Maeko-chan! My life just got a whole lot better. Come on, Maeko-chan, let's go!" he shouted. He looked down, waiting for a hand when he realized the what was on them. "Oh...um...I'm...sorry, about what happened in there. If I did anything to wrong you, I just want to apologized now, alright?" Kanaye said seriously before holding out an arm. "Shall we go?"

Maeko nodded and hooked an arm around Kanaye's. "I'm glad you're okay."

She shook her head. "Just about everyone that happenned in there was something I've done. It was hardly a pleasant place but it's not like it wasn't my own fault it existed in the first place."

Kanaye smiled at Maeko. "Thanks, Maeko-chan. Let us be off then!" he shouted as he opened the door, realized that he couldn't get through when their arms were linked, got annoyed, then sadly let go while holding the door open.

"Do not worry, Madam" he started in horrible accented French. "Everyone has problems. I just like you despite that."

After she walked through, he reconnected with her and started walking towards the entrance, pointedly ignoring the servant's stares. "Do you want to walk, or shall I get someone to drive us? It's kind of long, but you might want privacy..." he asked, furrowing his brow.

Maeko laughed at the french, more because she was tired and it sounded strange than because she knew it was being pronounced incorrectly.

It only just now occurred to her that this probably looked a bit strange, especially when she had only just finished her shift. She ignored it for now.

"Walking's fine." She said, smiling.

Kanaye smiled at her. He made her laugh! This was good, right? "Alright then, if you insist. Have to admit, getting some exercise would do us both some good. I haven't been to soccer lately, so..." he finished, shrugging.

Mentally, Kanaye was five parts jubilant and excited, one part perverted, and four parts worried. Would his parents accept her? Daisuke would probably be fine with her, given how hard she works. Elizabeth, on the other hand...Kanaye didn't know what his mother thought about much. Oh well, he thought. He'll burn that bridge when he comes to it.

He spent most of the time walking in silence, looking around at everything going around. Quite honestly, he was surprised that not many people were actually looking at them. Maybe foreigners are better when they're with full-blooded Japanese people? Kanaye had no idea, but it was better then thinking about what to say. It was just so awkward. He didn't really know about any of her interests except Misaki, and asking would be kind of weird. So time for idle small talk! "Maeko-chan, how's it going? Are you holding up alright? I mean, you were working and you were at school, but knowing you, you'd be doing that unless you couldn't move. Are you sure you're fine?"

"Really?" Maeko asked. "Did Ito-sensei take over? Or was it because of that place?"

Maeko was most parts confused and trying to avoid thinking too much because all that came to mind was still the idea that this was some practical joke. She was used to silence, it didn't seem so awkward to her.

"Other than my hands? I'm just a little tired. But slacking off isn't going to get me anywhere, it'll just mean there's more to get done later."

Kanaye shrugged. "A combination of both, really. I don't mind the guy personally, but he's too obsessed with wrestling to make a good coach or teacher. He's a guy I'd like to have a beer with, but not a guy I'd like to be a coworker with. And that place is really making me tired. Not that I'm complaining, mind you." he pointed out. "Saving people like you is much more important then my comfort."

Kanaye nodded with a worried look on his face. "If you insist, Maeko-chan, but if you feel tired or weak in any way, let me know! I won't force you into anything you don't want to do or don't feel like doing! That would be dishonorable!" Kanaye wondered if he was laying it on too thick, but he continued on. "Relax and enjoy yourself, Maeko-chan. It's what I'm doing."

"His lessons are tougher than Aomori's but he really does put his heart into what he does, at least." Maeko said, nodding. "I've heard a lot of people are having difficulties with him because he's unwilling to accept sick notes, though." She grinned. "Whatever's making people end up in that place, it's pretty unlikely that it'll stop. But it's only a month until August break, now. If nothing else it'll be a good chance for everyone to get some rest then."

Maeko shook her head again. "I'm fine, really."

Kanaye nodded in agreement. Yay for more things in common! "Yeah, that's kind of weird. I mean, he's forcing Kojima-kun to be the manager of the wrestling team because he has a frail heart. I don't like the guy, but even so, that's kind of cruel, don't you think?"

August break? He had completely forgot about that! He punched his palm, happily getting an idea. "Oh yeah, that reminds me!" he stops suddenly and turns to Maeko. "Do you want to go somewhere on the break?"

Kanaye nodded, though it was obvious he's still worried. "If you insist..."

"Really? I didn't hear about that. I'm not sure the school's rules allow that. If she has a doctor's note it's not supposed to be questionned..." Maeko didn't think too much about the -kun. Kanaye didn't use appropriate honourifics normally anyway.

"Huh? I hadn't thought of something like that. Oh, but what if something happens at that time? It'd be bad to split the group up..."

Kanaye shrugged. "I don't think Ito-sensei would care anyway. I mean, he made the soccer wrestling team! I STILL DON'T KNOW WHAT THE HELL SOCCER WRESTLING IS!" he shouted to no one in particular. Kanaye blinked a bit, then hunched down, blushing. "I apologize, Maeko-chan. It's...weird."

Straitening up, he laughed. "It's just the two of us. They can handle it without two people. Hell, maybe they can come along? If there is a killer," Kanaye started whispering. "Then they only seem to be focusing on persona users. Therefore, we can be safe. If someone does go missing, we're there anyway."

Maeko laughed at the sudden outburst. "It's fine. I don't know what it is either. Did you try asking him?"

"It's a life or death situation in there. If even one person's missing things might turn out worse..." She thought for a few seconds and then continued. "Everyone? I guess if everyone started getting along..."

Kanaye smiled. Maeko was so cute when she laughed. "I would, but he'd go into a tirade over the meaning of the sport and not answer my question til after an hour long speech. I'll ask Keiichi-kun, maybe he knows."

Kanaye chuckled happily and clapped his hands. "This would be an excellent time for team-building! Think about it! There isn't any stress, everyone's happy. I mean, there would probably be arguments from time to time but at least we could work together!"
