Where: Soyokaze Underworld, Paradise.
When: Saturday/Sunday, 30th/31st May.
Why: Dungeon crawling chat supplementals!

Things To See In Iburi:

"Thoughtfulness, dedication to customers' needs and meticulous attention to detail are all things that Soyokaze Touya, a ryotei in the centre of Iburi, is known for. A luxurious and somewhat exclusive resturant, it is famed for managing to be a quiet, tranquil place despite its location in the noisy city centre as well as for its food."

Paradise had kept the Oubai clan business, Soyokaze Touya, as a building inside the city centre. A restaurant needed customers, but this scene had no people. One could walk from the train station to its doors and not meet a soul - none of which could be seen in the entry hall behind dimly-tinted doors. A counter was seven meters away, with chairs and a pot plant on the right. One who went inside would see it was a hospital. The hygenically-scented air fought off infections and strongly made it difficult to breathe. Being a hospital, the walls were white, and so were the bright lights.

Kouchisei hadn't wanted to leave. He'd found comfort here; his mother was close and the fake appearance on the outside would keep people away. He was a quiet man, and his mother had wanted him to bring friends to visit. Regardless, it was hard to change and open himself up to make them. This hospital was a nice place, he thought.

"Sempai...Please! You need to come back with us. You don't want to die do you?" She looked around there had to be some way to convince him. "You want to be a doctor right? That's why this place is like this...right? You want to help people. But if you stay here you can't! You...You won't be able to help save someone and that's what you want isn't it?" She moved closer to him, keeping her eyes locked with him.

"I'm not going to leave you here Oubai-sempai. I won't! You can't make me leave you here! You helped me when I needed help, and I want to help you. Please, Sempai...come back with us. We need you to come back. People are worried about you. I'm worried about you Sempai!" Misaki held out her hand to him.

Looking at Misaki, he wondered how she knew his dream. Was it the clothes he wore? Or this hospital? He couldn't change what he was going to do. Expectations were troublesome. Things couldn't change, like his career. Leaving his family behind to gain happiness and change his life? That wasn't good - he wasn't somebody who was callous. He's been here for a week, he thinks. This place doesn't care for the time. If the old man missed him, it would make him adapt and change. Except nobody said it would be easy. It was a hard decision to make.

"... So you won't leave me alone after all. Disappointing."

He looked at Reizo, ignoring Misaki's hand. The boy had rumours about him, and whatever lay in store in his future - was it something he wanted?

"What's good about the outside, anyway? People badmouth you on the internet. They decide your future. They leave you in despair and none of us are strong enough to change anything. We die on the inside. What is the difference?"

"You're all broken up because people talk bad about you on the internet? That's really pathetic."

On some level, she could sympathize with Kou. It seemed like he was under a lot of pressure... and if Misaki was right about him wanting to be a doctor, well, she knew that his family was in the restaurant business and he'd probably be expected to take over. Probably what he was talking about with regards to other people deciding your future. But, this wasn't the time or the place, and the way he was acting just wasn't rational. At least his family had faith in him - maybe he could talk to them and do what he wanted, after all. Either way, he'd just have to deal with it... somewhere away from here.

Impatient with the situation and hoping to avoid a nihilistic rant from Kou, she looked to Reizo. He probably felt the same as she did, albeit perhaps for different reasons. The look said all it needed to: "Let's get this over with."

"Hrn. Whatever."

Kouchisei knew he had problems. What he didn't need was somebody from school telling him that. He didn't know Kiriko well. He thought she was cold. She might understand the pressure he was buckled under - everyone had a family - but not the situation. Everyone's was different.

He looked at Reizo challengingly when he was addressed. He never had liked the younger boy. He was aggressive and chaotic. Not somebody he would like to spend time with. He also had to wonder why nobody had done anything about his behaviour. Anybody else would have been expelled.

"Don't say whatever! Oubai-san, are you even hearing us?" she looked at him with something akin to contempt at the moment. How could he be saying those things. Things that he didn't really believe in. Was he that blind to reality or was it this world that was blinding him. She was angry, not at him, but the situation. The fact that he felt this kind of pressure, this stress. Whatever it was it was hurting him enough to make him want to stay here.

"So you think here is perfect or something? It's not! Look around you Oubai-sempai. Seriously look, not with your eyes though. You can't see because you're not feeling what's here. It's oppressive Oubai-sempai. There's nothing here, no noise, no people, just these...puppets and things, to make you think this is real, or something...I don't know it's all jumbled up. But whatever it is, it's not a real place." Misaki clenched her fists hard. "Don't you see what it's doing to you? It's only hurting you. What's good about the outside you asked...you have fresh air. The warmth of a summer's day, the rain falling on you as you run to the door, laughter, tears, you can't get that here. A touch on the head, or on the face. Someone's smile...you won't see that staying here...."

"So what if people on the internet say things, they don't know you do they? How can you listen to someone that doesn't know you. Yes it hurts, I know it does, but still, Oubai-sempai there are other people that care about you. Care about what you're do and say. They won't say things, they'd defend you if you would just let them...."

Misaki was wipeing her eyes now and she looked at him with concern, "Don't you see, you say they decide your future. Why? Because you let them. They can't choose what makes you happy or what makes you sad, only you can do that. No one else has that choice. Wouldn't you think your mother would want you to be happy? Don't you think she would want you to do what you wanted to do, rather then just follow along with what someone told you to do? You think you're not strong, but you are! You could have curled up in a ball and never come out of your home, but you did. You could have just given up everything, but you didn't. Why...because you're a stronger person then you seem Oubai-sempai. I know it's not much coming from me, but please...please think about this."

Misaki closed her eyes and sigheed looking at him gently, "What would make you happy Oubai-sempai? What's something that you want to do? Not what they want, not what we want, what's something that makes you...happy Oubai-san?"

What makes him happy?

Was he happy?

"I don't know," he admitted. "Either way, it seems I'm stuck here. Before you people rushed in, I thought this place was perfect. You're incessant in trying to get me away. Why are you people telling me to think about it and do what's good? You care, I suppose. I'm grateful, but..."

He then frowned. "Stay out of my hospital. I understand you're up to some crazy kidnapping that will never work. Hrmph. As I am, I can't do anything to stop you. Just don't expect me to be grateful."

"Oubai-sempai..." Misaki said gently. She wasn't sure what else to tell him. Closing her eyes she sighed.

"I just want to help you Oubai sempai. Like you helped me."

Reizo glowered at the side of Kanaye’s head. Either the bastard liked pushing his luck like a certain ice-bitch he knew, or he was just too stupid to know better. He chalked it up to the latter, made a mental note beside the others that’d been tallying up alongside Kanaye’s name, and tried to focus on the matter at hand. Kou sure was a stubborn bastard when he wanted to be.

He listened quietly to Misaki’s speech, worried a little that his eyes would pop out of his head at any moment from how hard they were about to roll, but looked a little surprised when Kou brushed her off again. He’d of listened to Misaki, even if it was only because he never wanted to hear another one of those speeches again. Ever. Out loud, anyway.

He drew himself to his impressive full height and shouldered past the group and up to the front. Nearly nose-to-nose with Kouchisei, he regarded the older boy with an incomprehensible smile, took a stance, and threw a liver punch with the sickening accuracy and nonchalance of a professional boxer.

“Get your head out of your ass, senpai”

It wasn’t a good idea, Kou learned, to step back; he was fast but Reizo was tougher. Air rushed out his gut. He collapsed to his knees and then the floor. Reizo's punch was like it had shattered stone. His eyes were watering. He couldn't see the door. Knowing he was surrounded by people who'd come to take him home, his resolve began faltering. He’d not leave. He didn’t need to. But Reizo was right: he was stubborn. He couldn't be like this.

And that man's fist was like a hammer. His abdomen was in absolute pain.

Kou couldn't admit Reizo was right. He had been ready to leave by saying he couldn't do anything to stop them, but the way he'd said it had been too aggressive. His mother had died. The only physical memories of her were the things he'd been given. The need to honour her was served as he wore it; he found it difficult to do anything that would go against the family. And he was longing to do something for himself. Then Reizo had punched him. It was like a gift, almost.

“The hell was that for?!” he was protesting.

He kneeled down smoothly in front of the boy, patting him almost fondly atop the head with one hand as he leaned in and blew an errant puff of cigarette smoke into his face. Nothing like pouring salt into the wound, as it were. Kicking people when they were down, literally or no, was one of Reizo’s favorite hobbies.

“Aw, senpai, I was just tryin’ to help. Bein’ a good kouhai and knockin’ some sense into ya, eh?”

The smile he gave showed off too many teeth and didn’t quite reach his eyes.

Kou said nothing. He was floored for a moment, and the ash only made him feel worse. He would protest, but considering what had happened he lacked the energy.

“...I... I,” he wheezed. “I am a moron.”

Reizo had smiled in a way that let Kou know he was in trouble. “I wish I could be this brave in real life," he muttered. Under the pain he felt grateful but he found it hard to admit that. His fingers reached, serching the floor for his glasses. He searched by touch, still finding it hard to concentrate, given the pain in his abdomen. That bastard.

"By god, that hurt." He grasped them with his fingers and tried to settle them back in place. How the hell could Reizo be that strong? He didn't look Reizo in the face [that smile frightened him] and looked around. "You assholes."

Kiriko had been standing stiff through the whole scene. At Kou's collective insult, her shoulders relaxed, a small smile creeping over her lips. He was finally ready to give in? Usually she looked down on Reizo for solving every problem with his fists, but hey, if it worked, who was she to complain.

"Come on, then. We'll help you out of here."

"You're the one that's trying to kill us, if only subconsciously." Kanaye remarked. He cannot deny that he felt some satisfaction at Reizo attacking someone whose name is not Kanaye.

"This place is fake. It's everything you want it to be, except for one detail: IT ISN'T REAL!" Kanaye finished by shouting. "Just admit that, go home, and Reizo won't have to beat you up more."

"You'd honestly have preferred to die in a place like this?" Maeko asked, reaching up to strke Misaki's hair and calm her down. She hadn't spoken much and honestly would have preferred that nobody else did. Calling upon that old crone for aid as much as she had during the battle against the table had left a dull pain in the back of her head that had only intensified as they'd moved upward, like exhaustion but less physical. She wasn't sure if it was from summoning something like that so much or a general consequence of being around an old lady a lot. Either way it was unpleasant and everyone being so loud really was not improving her mood.

She was glad both that he seemed to finally be listening and that there didn't seem to be anywhere else for him to vanish, though. She wasn't sure she could hold out another battle.

"We're all going home now. You're coming with us."

"... Go home?"

Kouchisei found it easier to think of seeing his father again - returning to school - that to admit he'd harboured murderous intent. He didn't want to kill them! How could they think that? Was it this hospital? No, it was safe. A doctor helped people. The Hippocratic Oath. Killing was anathema. And now that other self he'd seen was standing by the door.

"... Move aside. I don't need you."

The Other Kouchisei remained silent. He looked at his other self, and then the others in the operating theatre.

"... I'm pissed off," it said. "That bastard Reizo hits you once and you give up? Well, I'm sure that's ingratitude. And now you're feeding them some bullshit about being a moron when the truth is they were never convincing enough for you. You just want to use their power. That's really nice. Well done."

Maybe it was just the days events, maybe she had become accustomed to the weirdness, but for some reason, the existence of Another Kouchisei didn't surprise Kiriko quite as much as she wished it would. Her guard was up the moment she saw it standing in the door and she stepped back from it a little, not wanting to be too close. This could get dangerous - after all, things tended to in this world.

"I guess you're who we met on the sixth floor?" she asked with a frown.

"... When was I talking to you?"

It looked at Kiriko coldly. Perhaps these people wanted to help, but he knew everyone wanted something. "In any case, we are nothing that concerns you. Just leave." His expression suggested if they didn't they would be facing violence.

"Actually, buddy, this DOES concern us. Kou-san is our classmate, and for some of us, our friend. So we aren't going to let you take him from us."
Kou wasn't exactly on the list of people that Kanaye will give his life for, but he was still a person, and a person is a person, unless he's Reizo, in which case he's just a super-intelligent monkey.

"Take him from you? I think spending too much time in this world has sent your mind into a coma. You seem to do nothing but make ridiculous statements."

It knew his other self agreed with the assessment about his schoolmate. After all, he felt the same and he was Kouchisei. Now after everything he was being rejected. After all he'd done - it still wasn't enough?

The Shadow looked at Kouchisei. "I'm not throwing this hospital to that damn mutt. You're staying here."

Kouchisei interrupted. "Shut up."

"What?"

The real one had had enough. His eyes were narrowed, and his tone was low and dry.

"If I'm right, you're only here because I'm weak. The idea in itself is ridiculous. I appreciate the help, but I don't need you now. I'm more concerned about the fact these idiots might get hurt or killed... that's to be expected though. I'm human."

Kouchisei knew he'd put some emotions on his sleeve. He wanted to show them the one thing he felt for being made aware: respect. It was a difficult thing, admitting he was wrong. The last thing he had to show was weakness, he'd been taught; others would take advantage of it.If Reizo didn't like it, he didn't care. He wouldn't mind if Reizo suffered. He might learn something from it.

And then he felt the atmosphere change. It became heavier and more oppressive. He settled his gaze on his other self, whose frown had given way to a shark-toothed smile.

"I suppose now I have to teach you a lesson. Our mother always said the right path is beset on all sides by difficulty. I don't need something so useless as a cell phone to beat some sense into you! Nothing useless! Just competence!"

Soon as the monologue had finished, winds circled around the room. The red energy that followed it showed the path of shadows, which rammed themselves into the stronger Shadow's body, which expanded outwards and increased in height. A hand burst out of the floor, grabbing a mass of red fabric. That rose up to the Shadow's shoulders, except something seemed... odd. Kouchisei's eyes weren't moving and his body was made of the same material as the hospital puppets. Four large arms came from the back, grey-skinned with white markings. Each held a marionette string that moved some part of the body.

Hiro had been hanging back this whole time, saving himself. He'd noticed a tendency to end a battle winded, tired, sore, even if he hadn't taken much damage himself. Was it his constitution acting up? It had been weak as a child...regardless, he'd decided not to burden the others by constantly requesting aid, and try to save his strength for when he REALLY needed it. And now, it seemed, they did. He'd let the others try talking to Kou. He was no psychiatrist, and he didn't want to be responsible for making the situation with Kou even worse...which had happened anyway, though, honestly...the way Reizo had asserted himself and tried to take control like he did...Hiro could appreciate that, even if it hadn't worked.

But now it looked as though they'd fight their toughest opponent yet. First thing's first, he needed some help from Arjuna. His cellphone was out in a flash, his hand hitting the speed-dial for the Persona number. "Arjuna, Tarukaja now!" He cried, and immediately, the golden warrior did its job, increasing Hiroshi's power...

Yuu had remained quiet throughout most of the trip through the hospital; he had never liked hospitals, they made him uneasy. The harsh lights, the silence...strange that places of healing felt almost like death. So he had kept a sabre at his side, keeping wary. Those who did most of the fighting would tire themselves out; it was vital to, if they intended to do this today, keep some of their group fresh.

But who would have guessed that Kou had something so ugly inside of him? Or wherever it'd come from? A monstrous puppet...maybe it meant something, but none of this place made any sense to him at all.

"I guess the time for talking's over," he said. Although the thing made him nervous, he held up his sabre, his hand surprisingly steady; keeping himself angry helped burn the fear away. "You don't want us to save him? Good thing we don't need your consent."

His other hand pulled out his cell phone free from his medical coat.

Bastard..? Eh.

MUTT?!

Reizo stared at the back of the shadows head, all his anger and enmity draining into the scowl. If looks could kill..

He frowned as he watched the little battle unfold, eyes ping-ponging from the good Kou to the next. It’d be easier if the evil one had a goatee, he decided. Maybe he could hold it down and draw one on.. That spacey art girl was bound to have something like a permanent marker on her. Still, the more he looked at, the more that thought shrunk; something was off with this one. Besides being an evil twin, the feeling coming off of it.. Felt bad, like all that apprehension he had before a big gang war condensed into a single package. That this runt of a bastard was inspiring those feelings in him.. Well, it angered him, much like everything else seemed to!

His eyes widened in both shock and horror when the thing changed.

“I thought you were ugly before..” He croaked out, moving to take a tentative step back from the horror. He gathered his resolve mid-step and changed direction, taking a step forward instead. He’d faced the monsters of this world already, what was this one? It even looked like Kou! He’d have fun beating it senseless..

Teeth clenched, he lined up beside the other two and took a stance.

“And here I thought you guys were tuckered out from all those stairs. Careful not to pull anything, ladies.”

Misaki watched the others as they pulled out their phones. She'd been useless earlier and thoughts ran across her mind. This was what had faced Sato-kun when he came here no doubt. Only no one had come for him. She looked at Kou, the real one and felt a ton of symphathy run through her body for the older boy.

How sad it was that he felt this way. This ugly deformed puppet of feelings. This growth that had given in to feelings...yes those feelings were his, no doubt amplified in this place. She was sure that this thing, this Shadow, this whatever it was, cared nothing for them. Watching it battle with Kouchisei made her feel...it wasn't sympathy not in the sense of her feeling sorry for him, more like...happiness. Happy that, even though he was probably in pain doing this he was willing to stand up to it.

It was only when she felt the air change that the hairs on the back of her neck went up. She paled some and covered a scream from her mouth as the Shadow gave Kouchisei a leering shark tooth grin then started to change.

Most of the others had been in the battle with the crying table. She'd been pushed back from the fray by Kiriko and Maeko. Her attention went from the giant puppet version of her senpai, to the almost catatonic Kouchisei laying on the ground.

"SENPAI!!!" Misaki cried out and felt the tears come...She fought them back. She couldn't cry. Not now...not when this was happening. Before Maeko could stop her Misaki moved forward and glared at it.

"You will not hurt him the way you hurt Sato-senpai! I won't let you! He's my friend and whatever he chooses to do is his choice, not yours!" she was saying this more to herself, as if reassuring herself that it was okay. She was allowed to feel this way right? Even though doubts swirled they were going to need someone who could heal and she had lost her friend once to this world...she wouldn't lose another.

Pulling out her fans she nodded to the three guys, "Well, what are we waiting for?" She snapped open her phone listened, "Persona...." Misaki said then winced as the fire bird appeared. She glared at the puppet and muttered, "It's going to be fun snapping all those strings you fake."
