Party Time!
Who: Everyone who heard, basically.
What: Kiriko's Party
Where: Event hall by the dorms
When: 8pm Saturday
Why: Birthday celebrations!

The party's turnout was roughly as expected, and the presence of such a lively crowd was enough to make anyone (but especially Kiriko) thankful for the fact that the event hall had air conditioning. Tables were scattered about, some of them holding food for the guests and all of them clear of the dance floor. A school-aged boy with a nervous look to him was at the head of the dancefloor acting as DJ and doing a reasonably good job at keeping everyone pleased, mostly by way of immediately playing any song requested that had not been previously blacklisted by Kiriko. A karaoke system and open mic were set up, but no one had gotten quite drunk enough to approach the stage yet. The much-fretted over decorations had gone up last minute and the sparkling blue butterflies dangling from the ceiling or stuck to walls here and there caught and reflected the dim light.

Kiriko sat at the head table with a gaggle of girls, several from 1-A, and was chatting and laughing easily with them. She was keeping a sharp eye out for anybody who looked like they might break something or cause other kinds of trouble, occasionally turning from the conversation to crane her head and look out over the partygoers, but seemed quite pleased and relaxed nonetheless.

What were people supposed to do at a dance party? Dance, obviously! Toshimi had only been to one dance party in her lifetime--to which every middle school and high school student in town had been invited-- and that had been nowhere near as nice as this one. Despite her lack of experience for such situations, Toshimi was not a horrible dancer, and she was having a good time.

She did feel slightly out-of-place, though, as her classmates seemed to be dressed rather formally compared to her tank top and skirt. She was also worried that her gift, too, would pale in comparison to those of her classmates: she'd bought Kiriko a set of hairclips, but they were the cheap kind that Toshimi would normally wear herself. Kiriko's were always much nicer, so Toshimi didn't feel they'd be good enough, and attached the gift to a bag of candy from a nearby store. Kiriko seemed like the kind of person who wouldn't like sweets, but Toshimi didn't want to make assumptions--plus, having already bought the hairclips, candy was one of the only things she could afford.

At a song change, Toshi worked her way out of the crowd on the dance floor and headed for one of the tables with food on it. She hadn't eaten before the party, so she was getting hungry. Everything looked appetizing. She took a plate and began to pile it with whatever food she could reach.

Kiriko's handling-of-the-antisocial mission ended with a brief conversation with one of her shy friends from 1-C. Shortly after being greeted, the girl had revealed among profuse apology that parties were not really her scene and she had been dragged because her older friend was interested in the free food. Kiriko had narrowly managed to persuade her to partake as well before leaving, and so was guiding her over to the food tables when she spotted Toshimi loading a plate up.

"Nawanaka-san, hello!" She distractedly passed a plate into the hands of her companion, who looked momentarily baffled as to what to do with it. "Go on, help yourself, I'll catch up." She turned back to Toshimi with a smile as the other girl hesitantly followed her instructions, beelining for the sweets table.

"I saw you earlier, but you were dancing, so. I didn't think you'd like to dance, actually."

"Ah, Ikeda-san! Happy birthday!" Toshimi set her plate at the edge of the table for a second so that she could turn to Kiriko and bow politely. "Thank you very much for inviting me," she said. "It's a wonderful party."

"Yes, I was having fun!" Toshimi smiled. She glanced up at one of the butterflies hanging from the ceiling. "I don't suppose that people here would think that, no," she agreed, smiling back at Kiriko. "Dancing is all right. It's rare to be at a party like this, so I figured, take the chance while it's there." She paused. "Not that I especially like it, though, so you're right in a way."

She took another glance around at the party. "This must have taken a lot of work to put together," she said. "Since it's your party, does that mean you like dancing, Ikeda-san?"

She smiled at Toshimi in response to the last question, mouth looking a bit taut.

"Not especially. My friends do, though, it was mostly their idea to have something big. But I can tell you it was a lot of work - I wound up doing most of it anyway." She laughed a little, smiling a little easier now.

"Which is for the best, I don't think they would have come up with anything approaching tasteful if I left decorating to them. I'm glad you're having a good time, though. How's the food?"

"Ah, then we have that in common!" She returned Kiriko's laugh politely, covering her mouth.

"Well, it was nice of them to think of you," said Toshimi pleasantly. "So you picked the decorations? I think butterflies are wonderful, myself," she mused. "They say that one flap of a butterfly's wing on the other side of the world can...well, you know." She waved her hand, smiling. Regardless of the decorations, the butterfly effect was not party conversation. "They're very pretty."

Toshimi picked her plate back up at the mention of the food. "I haven't had any yet, actually. I was just about to sit down--have you eaten already, Ikeda-san? Everything looks delicious..."

Kiriko smiled. Chaos theory - was that the kind of thing Toshimi was interested in? She had never really considered what her teammate might consider 'wonderful' outside of baseball, but if she had, she was fairly certain that butterflies and chaos theory would not have made the short list.

"Only a little bit. I guess I might was well serve myself now... Have you picked a table already? Who are you sitting with?"

"Ah..." Toshimi looked around the party to see who was sitting where, but she didn't see anybody she knew well who was eating. Even her friends on the baseball team who'd heard about and/or crashed the party seemed to be elsewhere. "No, I don't have a seat anywhere in particular," she said, shaking her head. Did Kiriko's asking mean that she needed a place to sit as well? She didn't want to assume--it was a big party filled with Kiriko's friends, so odds were that she already had people she had to eat with. "Don't worry, I'll be able to find a place," she said cheerily.
