Party Time!
Who: Everyone who heard, basically.
What: Kiriko's Party
Where: Event hall by the dorms
When: 8pm Saturday
Why: Birthday celebrations!

The party's turnout was roughly as expected, and the presence of such a lively crowd was enough to make anyone (but especially Kiriko) thankful for the fact that the event hall had air conditioning. Tables were scattered about, some of them holding food for the guests and all of them clear of the dance floor. A school-aged boy with a nervous look to him was at the head of the dancefloor acting as DJ and doing a reasonably good job at keeping everyone pleased, mostly by way of immediately playing any song requested that had not been previously blacklisted by Kiriko. A karaoke system and open mic were set up, but no one had gotten quite drunk enough to approach the stage yet. The much-fretted over decorations had gone up last minute and the sparkling blue butterflies dangling from the ceiling or stuck to walls here and there caught and reflected the dim light.

Kiriko sat at the head table with a gaggle of girls, several from 1-A, and was chatting and laughing easily with them. She was keeping a sharp eye out for anybody who looked like they might break something or cause other kinds of trouble, occasionally turning from the conversation to crane her head and look out over the partygoers, but seemed quite pleased and relaxed nonetheless.

Renju hadn't intended to come here. Really, she hadn't. She had other things to do, better things than watch people talk and get drunk and... whatever else it was they did at this sort of thing, not that she really had any reason to know. She'd technically been invited, being a Persona-user and all, but this wasn't her scene, and she barely knew Ikeda-san besides.

She was just here to get her shoe back. Was that so much to ask?

Her normal clothing was practically formal enough for the party as it was--a pale yellow cardigan over a button-down white shirt and black slacks, paired with sensible non-stolen shoes. She'd brought a gift out of obligation--she didn't know Ikeda-san that well, but there were certain things that worked well enough for most people, and she wasn't about to come without one.

To her dismay but not surprise, it looked like Ikeda-san was busy. Renju hung back near the wall, peering at the stack of gifts. She was pretty sure she could see it from here, but she wasn't completely sure it was hers...

Who on earth stole a single shoe from a locker and then turned around and used it as a gift, anyway?

"Hello. Sonozaki-san, right?" Kiriko waved as she moved towards Renju on her journey to unglue nervous partygoers from the wall. She smiled easily, figuring that was a good way to accomplish her specified goal.

"Thanks for coming. You look a little nervous, though. Oh, is it that you don't drink...?"

Tom adjusted his hat and nodded to Kiriko.

"Big public event like this isn't a good time to draw attention to myself.
After all, Getting half the school in one place then getting them drunk was... actually quite brilliant. This party is a wealth of information. We should throw them more often."

Kiriko stared at Tom in that incredulous way she found herself staring at him almost every time they had a conversation.

"Right. Well. Glad you're enjoying it?"

Tom nodded, confident that he had made the right choice in his behavior. His books had suggested something called mingling, but Tom was utterly confused by the concept. Thankfully Ikeda confirmed that he was just fine in listening in on conversations.

Suddenly he remembered that he was supposed to compliment the host and give her the presents.

"You... umm... are being an efficient host, and are managing to speak to all of your guests equally."

He nodded to himself, it was a good compliment he thought.

"Oh, no, it's not that. It's just that I don't really go to parties..."

Looking somewhere between nervous, sheepish, and generally shy, Renju peeled herself away from the wall and offered the little blue-and-white-wrapped box to Kiriko, holding it in both hands. "This isn't much, but..." The whole presentation was oddly formal, though that wasn't exactly out of character for her. Besides, having protocol to follow made it easier on her.

Still, she had to bring up the actual reason she was here somehow. Maybe if she was indirect about it, it would help. "I, um, noticed that one of the gifts up there was a shoe." Nope. Still awkward. She kicked herself mentally.

"Well, hopefully you have fun at this one? Thanks," she said, taking it with one hand and taking a sip of the drink clutched in her other as she glanced over her shoulder at the shoe in question.

"Oh, yeah," she chuckled. "Can you believe that? I think the girl who gave it was already drunk when she showed up and just trying to get in my good books or whatever. It's probably just an old one she couldn't find the pair to, looks kind of ugly to me..."

Renju couldn't help but wince. It obviously wasn't as though Ikeda-san had any way of knowing the shoe's true origins, but the comment still stung a bit.

At least the girl being drunk certainly explained a lot. It didn't explain why she hadn't taken the mate, but still, it was a start.

All right, she could do this. She'd faced down Shirai-kun (briefly, granted, with implicit support from others), this shouldn't be as difficult as it was. "Actually, it's mine." She slid the satchel off her back, and, after a bit of fishing around, produced the mate. "She took it from my locker at the end of the day."

"... Oh!"

Well that was mildly embarassing. And right after saying how ugly it was, too!

"But... why didn't she steal both your shoes then?" she wondered allowed. Kiriko shook her head and waved Renju over to the table. "Er, sorry about that, you can have it back. But why don't you stay and at least eat something? For the trouble of having come all the way over here, and all..."
