Who: Toshimi and Tom
What: Breaking and entering, V2
Where: Toshimi's room
When: Presumably sometime after the meeting, in the evening
Why: Because Tom has a habit of breaking into people's rooms.

Toshimi was having just an average night. Well, basically average. Without gym or baseball to burn off extra energy, she'd been a little antsy, but acknowledging this would be admitting that something had changed since Aomori's death. He'd only been a teacher, after all. So, after school, she took the train back to the dorms just as she usually would. Just as usual, she put her schoolbag back in her room and caught the tail end of whatever was on television in the dorm lounge and then went back to her room. She finished her homework, as usual. She re-read things that she didn't understand the first time and went back over her class notes to make sure they made sense, as usual. She went to the dorm kitchen to heat up her usual dinner (instant ramen), as usual, and ate it as she usually did on one of the couches in the dorm lounge. After that, she went back to her room and opened the door, just as usual---

Except that someone was already IN the room. Most of the dorm rooms, including hers, were singles, and she hadn't been expecting anyone, so even seeing somebody there was enough of a shock. Moreover, it was Sagaki-senpai. While it was better than a stranger in her room, it still left some rather important questions unanswered. Immediately Toshimi's mind started racing with them: in what, exactly, was he interested that was in her room? Was he conducting an investigation, and did that make her the subject? Was he stealing what few possessions she had, and why would he want any of them? Or (even worse) was he there to get a peek through her underwear drawer!? She stood for a long moment with an uncharacteristically dumbfounded expression on her face, trying to come up with a less terrifying explanation.

"S-sagaki-senpai," she finally managed to stutter. "Just...what exactly are you doing here?" Toshimi wasn't entirely sure if she wanted to know the answer.

"I brought you some new weapons."

Tom pulled out three sets of what looked like black cloth. He unrolled them to reveal five throwing knives of the kind he usually carried in each set, fit snugly into the pouches. He set them down on Toshi's bed and looked to her.

"You mentioned you wanted some new ones, to stop stealing from the dorm kitchens. These are some of my extra sets. There's a store just outside of Iburi that sells them along with some other things.
I'm uh... I'm sorry I had to... sneak into your room, I just didn't want anyone to see me giving you weapons in a more public place."

"You brought some..." repeated Toshimi as her eyes went from Tom to the knives back and forth. She relaxed a little: at least he had an explanation. And the prospect of free stuff could always put her in a good mood.

Still, she wasn't entirely sure what to make of the situation. No one (among the people that she knew, at least) just gave things away for free, and it was a very suspicious way of giving something to someone else. He could have at least waited until she was in the room. Either way, though, he'd been accurate in assessing that she needed new weapons, and she'd let too long of a moment pass without saying anything. "Thank you, Sagaki-senpai, I'm in your debt." She bowed politely.

"That being said, though..." She cast a glance over at a change purse sitting on her desk. There was no polite way to say 'I don't have enough money to pay you back'. She settled for, "It's difficult..." until she remembered suddenly, "And I still owe you for the tea from before!" She hadn't meant to say this out loud, but she'd lost a little bit of her self-control in the surprise. "Sorry..."

Tom shook his head and held up his hands.

"Don't worry about it. You needed it, I provided it."

Tom got worried for a moment. He was sure people always operated on a system of favors, so why wouldn't he want Toshi to be in his debt. He resolved that this was what he did for the team she was on. He provided them with as much assistance as he could, that made it okay for them to help him out when he went to Paradise. That was all it was.

"And you're group is working with me. So favors and information are exchanged. Money is easy for me to come by, I'd much rather have favors....which are repaid when we fight in Paradise right?"

Tom wondered to himself why he was babbling.

"..And the tea you gave me information that helped with my investigation."

"I guess that's right," Toshimi said agreeably. "We have to work together if we're going to survive that place." She smiled, but was still fairly confused.

It broke too many rules to for it to make sense, she decided, . Tom might have said they were even, but that was just how favors worked. Toshimi just wished that she could figure out what exactly he was expecting in return so she would feel less uneasy about it. Whatever it was, it didn't seem like he was going to ask. "Well, if you need anything..." she said vaguely. Toshimi didn't want to have to owe anything to anyone...not that she had much to offer.

She walked over and took a knife out from one of the pouches. Keeping it tight within her grip (and pointing it towards a wall) she flicked her wrist outward a couple times to test the balance. It felt like if she'd let it fly from her hand, it would have done some pretty substantial damage. She smiled at Tom, "So these are the kind you use, senpai?" She held the blade up to the light, inspecting it. Undoubtedly these knives were better suited for fighting than the steak knives she'd been borrowing from the dorm. "You have good taste," she remarked.

Tom crossed his arms behind his back and looked away a bit.

"When... when Sato died, I thought for a long time about what to do about it. I really didn't think the police would help much, and maybe I could do a better job. Someone had to do something.

I figured if I was looking for someone who was willing to killer one of the students in this school, then I should be prepared to put my life at risk. I mean the first time I tried something like this I... well I almost ended up dead. This time, I found the best weapons I could, ones I knew how to use, and then figured out how to hide them under my school uniform."

He looked back toward Toshi.

"I didn't think they would come in so handy."

Toshimi found herself staring out the window, at first to have something to look at other than her mental image of Sato Kei at his desk, and then because she didn't want to stare at Tom while he was talking about something that seemed private. Somehow it had evolved into a serious moment; she hadn't expected Tom to be so forthcoming with personal information like that. Especially after last time...wait, hadn't he said something back then about not trusting the police, too? And--he was saying that he brought weapons into school before he became a Persona-user? She turned back to glance at Tom again before returning her gaze to the window. Toshimi figured that she would be happier not knowing (curious though she was about whatever incident to which he was referring), so she didn't ask.

"I guess it's lucky for you that you had them," she said cheerily as she put the knife she'd taken out back in its place. "And now lucky for me, too, in a way." Toshimi went to pick up the knife pouches from her bed, but hesitated. "Are you sure you don't need these, though?" She was still not entirely sure about the whole concept of free stuff without strings attached. "If I end up with a few more knives and you end up with less, it becomes a zero-sum game and the team as a whole doesn't gain a thing, after all," she noted.

"Technically speaking, the team gets more knives as I give them to you, I'm contributing. Besides, the amount of knives will continue to drop regardless of who uses them, since we'll be throwing them.

I make routine trips out to restock, so I'll just get more for me when I go, I'll probably start picking up a double amount so we're both covered. Until then, you can have these."

He nodded toward the knives, and took a moment to sweep over Toshi's room. Baseball posters as he'd expected. He wondered how much of her was actually... persona.

"Would you mind answering some questions? Last time we weren't both persona users."

"You don't go back for yours, huh?" Toshimi said thoughtfully. It seemed to be the typical rich kid mentality: if something would be too inconvenient to keep around, toss it and buy a new one. She didn't want to say this out loud, though. "I wonder where they all end up," she mumbled as a compromise.

"You're going to...you're going to keep doing this?" She held up a knife pouch, indicating 'doing this' meant 'giving me weapons'. "Sagaki-senpai, I don't know if I can--" It was one thing to accept a one-time gift, but receiving something so valuable from someone who was basically a stranger on any consistent basis would leave her in too vulnerable of a position. On the other hand, it didn't seem like it was going to be any real burden on him, and he'd already given his explanation. Toshimi didn't remember how it worked with Americans: did they just accept gifts right away and then go to the movies or something? Not knowing what to do, Toshimi gave up, pasted on her usual smile, and said, "That's a very kind thing."

"Questions...?" Toshi supposed that since Tom probably knew more about Paradise than she did now, there wasn't anything she really had to hide from him. Still, he'd made a bad impression the first time around, and Toshimi doubted that the subjects he wanted to talk about would be comfortable ones. She found herself trying to think of a polite way to dismiss him before she realized, with a glance at the knives, that it would be impossible. Was that how it was going to be, a gift in exchange for information, just like before? Toshimi was in no position to refuse, either way.

"I'll do my best," she said politely. "Sit, if you want." She indicated towards her desk chair, while she herself sat down at the edge of her bed.

"I grab them when I can, but on the off chance that I miss some. I like to restock. It's no trouble to start picking up extra ones for you. Don't worry I know how you feel, it would be a major debt, but you repay by fighting for your team in Paradise.

If it really bothers you, don't think of me as buying knives for me and you, instead just pretend I suddenly started buying a whole bunch more for me, and since I can't possibly use all the extras, we'll share."

He looked around the room for the most neutral place he could sit, and dropped into the seat.

"You were... with the Persona users from the beginning right? I wanted to know what it was like, what happened. What happened when you rescued Oubai. All the answers ar eint he details, and anything can help. I don't think anyone else wants to tell me."

"Ah...is that so..." Tom could certainly be blunt, when he needed to be. Toshimi wondered it it was intentional or just a cultural difference. "Well, you have my gratitude, Sagaki-senpai. Thank you very much," she said in extremely polite language. It was as she'd expected; he'd already made up his mind about giving the knives to her, so it would be easier just to accept them and hope that it wouldn't come back to haunt her somehow. An opportunity was an opportunity, after all, no matter how strange.

"Ah, is that what you want to know about?" Toshimi felt slightly relieved. If anything, it was a wonder Tom didn't have the information already, considering how much he knew. In any case, their actions in Paradise seemed enough like fiction to Toshimi that even referring to the murders wasn't too painful (as long as it was in passing). "Let me think..." The beginning already seemed like some distant memory to Toshimi, buried back with the transfer exam and the train ride to Iburi.

"The first time we went into Paradise was...oh yeah. It was Sports Day. Somebody locked a bunch of us in the gym while we were getting supplies, so someone decided to try that rumor, and then the door opened. It looked pretty normal at first, except there were no people...and, you know, it was Paradise so we could tell soon enough that something was off. Then, I guess, the shadows showed up---no, it was the Personas first, then the shadows." She nodded, recalling. "Yeah, all our cell phones started ringing at once--although, now that I think of it, I don't know why I would have had my cell phone with me--but anyway, we all answered, and it was this weird voice..." Toshi mapped out the rest of the events in her head, trying to think. "So, we tried redialing the number, and you know...all the Personas came out, which was a little..." she paused before settling on the right word, "odd."

"After that, we ran into some Shadows, and..." Thinking back on it, Toshimi's action back then had been embarrassingly stupid. She hesitated and then jumped ahead in the story, "Well, we fought them off and headed back for the gym, where we figured it was safe...and, we didn't realize it then, but I guess that was the first time we went into Paradise." It was the first time she'd told that story, for obvious reasons.

Tom reached up and tapped his chin. Clearly thinking about things.

"Hmmm... So some one happened to lock all the Persona users in the gym, all of them happened to have their phones with them.

In addition there's Sonozaki stumbling upon our meeting in the woods, and the Persona users that Ito found. It's almost as if something is drawing all of us together.

It is possible that anyone who enters Paradise gets a persona. That would certainly make patrolling the place easier, but the fact that not only did these people get a persona but we've all been drawn together... it's almost like some force is building up an army, but for what purpose?"

Tom, as he often did, had become lost in his deduction, almost as if he hadn't realized Toshi was still sitting there.

"It really would help to know if anyone can get a Persona, or if those who receive one are some how special."

"It was kind of strange," Toshimi agreed. "But there's not much about this situation that isn't." She thought silently for a minute. "Just luck. I guess."

"The only way to disprove that theory would be for someone to enter Paradise and not get a Persona," she stated, "but for us to test it safely, we'd have to reveal the existence of Paradise and our group to someone who didn't already have a Persona." Toshimi didn't know anybody in Iburi who she could put in that position. The others probably did, but... "I wonder if the rest of the team would be interested, though."

"An army, huh...?" Toshimi repeated. "If that were the case, wouldn't someone have tried to influence us to do something by this point?" She looked out the window again. "I can't think of any outside force, except..." She closed her eyes and rubbed her forehead instead of finishing the thought. She didn't want to think about why any of these things happened.

"You need to know anything else, senpai?" she asked.

Tom looked away, in thought.

"Someone did try to influence you; I did. I organized you into a school club. If someone wants us all in their own private army and has a way of observing us, then it's not a stretch to assume they knew I would take this course of action."

He looked back at Toshi.

"This is all pure conjecture at this point though, there's still a lot about Paradise I don't know, but I am researching it.

And you are correct on your assessment. After all even if we did bring someone into paradise, whose to say they aren't a potential Persona user as well? How many people would we have to drag in until we found one who didn't receive the phone call?"

He put his hands in his pockets and let out a breath. He looked around the room, there was something else he needed to know, and he had no idea how to talk about it.

"You're... umm... you... had..."

He reached up and ran his fingers through his hair. He shifted nervously.

"You found Sato's body, and being so involved in a sports club meant you were close to Aomori. At the meeting you were bothered by us discussing them...."

It seemed to Tom like he should say something else, sometimes in his comics this would be where the friend would offer a shoulder to cry on, or someone to talk to, but people didn't actually do that did they? Would it seem cheesy or stupid? It would be like finding the murderer and saying "Halt Criminals! For My Persona has the power to make you attack your allies!" No one did that in real life. No it was stupid.

"... you should... talk to someone... about that."

This also seemed wrong to Tom. He thought about the books he'd been reading, and the old detective stories, and though to take a page out of the "police talking to a victim" book. He reached out an arm and patted her on the shoulder.

"..We'll get the guys who did this."

When Tom started talking about Sato and Aomori, Toshimi had actually been anticipating that he would start trying to come up with some strange connection between the cases involving her. She was so surprised by hearing something like that, something nice, it all actually showed on her face for a second: not just surprise, but everything that she probably should have been feeling over the past few weeks. Shock. Fear. Guilt. Anxiety. Grief. People's lives were coming to an end! How could she have allowed herself to keep smiling like everything was normal? For that split-second, the fake smile and pleasant mannerisms that formed the Nawanaka Toshimi known to Iburi were gone. She vaguely resembled a deer caught in headlights.

It was a very brief moment, though. Hardly a beat had passed before the trademark peaceful smile was back on Toshimi's face. "I technically wasn't the person who found that body, that was Ishino-sensei." She insisted, "I just happened to see it. So did a bunch of other people. And I wasn't that close to either of them." Sure, Aomori had been one of the only teachers at Nanakamado to make her feel welcome, but what did that matter? Sato Kei's dead body was something that she'd hoped she'd escaped from, but was that important? She shook her head, no, it didn't matter, it wasn't important. "It's nothing to worry about," she said mostly to reassure herself, forcing that smile with extra intensity. "Of course. We'll catch them."

Still. She felt odd. Toshimi felt an uncomfortable kind of pressure that had been building for a long time. She'd only just noticed it was there. It made her feel uneasy; she wanted to go back to ignoring it. Without turning her head, she casually brushed her shoulder off where Tom had touched it. She wasn't a child. She didn't need to be comforted. Doing this, though, only made that unsettling feeling worse. Maybe it would be better if she were alone, she decided. The smile remained frozen on her face. Standing up, she nodded to Tom, "Well, if there's nothing else...I deeply appreciate your assistance." The language was overly polite; her voice and her body language were both stiff.

Tom reached up a hand to his chin. He apparently completely missed the friendly suggestion that he leave.

"Yeah, I've started to wonder about... "

He noticed the sudden look on her face, and let out a breath. Her smile returned and he looked slightly confused. Earlier he had almost admired her for not letting Sato's death control her. Now he was just curious about her feelings.
He waved his hand at her appreciation.

"It's fine, you were more of a help to me."

He reached up and tapped his chin.

"I'm beginning to wonder about Ishino, and I did want to get your account of when you rescued Oubai. I was there for Ishinomori, but not Oubai, and all the details I can get would help."

He was still sitting there, despite Toshimi suggesting (fairly obviously) that he leave. If the rest of the team's opinion was to be believed, Toshimi considered, Tom didn't care much for being polite and considerate. Toshi herself usually considered these accounts to be slight exaggerations- he'd been so generous to her, after all- but she was beginning to understand. If he still wanted to ask her questions, he was going to do it one way or the other. Her opinion, as usual, made no difference in the matter.

She sat still, in thought. "Oubai-san...well, it was...I think either Aoi-san or Akuba-san who somehow figured out that he'd gone missing, maybe?" She wasn't sure. There hadn't been a lot of detail about it given to her, either. "We hadn't been sharing information freely just yet, since we weren't really a team at that point. All I know is that the people who went into Paradise on Sports Day, myself included, gathered to go and rescue him. Only, he wanted to stay put, just like Ishinomori-san did." She smiled serenely. "It was exactly the same, more or less. Except Oubai-san was in a hospital, not a video game. Oh, and the floors changed gradually instead of jumping to a different theme on each story. It was..." Toshimi paused, trying to think of the right euphemism for 'creepy'. She decided on, "Interesting." She might have gone into more detail, but that was as much of Oubai's hospital as she cared to think of. Besides, she just wanted to kick off her socks and play Matsuri for a while; when had this turned into an investigation, exactly?

"But as for Ishino-sensei...I can't tell you much about her," Toshimi shrugged. "She's nice, I guess."

That was Thomas' problem. FOr him it never turned into an investigation, it was always an investigation.

He began pacing at the edge of the room. He continued to not notice that Toshi wante dhim to go.

Toshimi shook her head, "No, I don't really speak to her outside of class. Since Nanakamado keeps her on the payroll, she must teach English well enough that most of her students can pass their college entrance exams...and, I heard that she was pretty close to..." The name 'Aomori-sensei' would not form in her mouth, for some reason. "Well, I'm sure you've heard, too." If Toshimi spoke fluent English, she reasoned, she probably wouldn't pay much attention in English class either. She found herself vaguely wondering if it was true what they said about the English for exams being unintelligible to Americans. "I don't even know where she studied or anything," she voiced.

Toshimi walked over to her dresser and picked up a spare hairclip. Sitting back down on her bed, she watched Tom pace the room as she clicked the hairclip open and closed repeatedly. She'd given him plenty of opportunity to leave, so he must have been in there because he wanted to stay for some reason. But all he was doing was pacing and talking about the case. He seemed to be miles ahead of her in both information and analysis of the case, and didn't seem to be the collaboration type. Toshimi could not fathom the reason why he still wanted her company. "You seem to have a solid grip on the case, Sagaki-senpai," she commented. "Well, more solid than anyone else, at this point."

Tom nodded to her comment.

"I am, I suppose I should start staking out Ishino, and see what she's been up to."

Tom seemed to think for a moment, making no move to leave, then something occurred to him.

"Oh, do you need to try working with the knives? I have a target in my room."

Tom looked around Toshi's dorm room for a moment.

"There isn't much space to practice in here, but we can't really do it outside or on the roof."

He scratched his head in thought.

"I wonder if we could try entering Paradise..."

"Uh...huh..." The idea of anyone 'staking out' anyone else was somewhat unsettling to Toshimi. "I'll leave it to you, then," she nodded.

Toshimi glanced at the knives, setting the spare hairclip she'd been toying with down. "A target?" This piqued her curiosity; her usual targets were either strike zones or shadows, and hitting an actual bullseye sounded like it would be a worthwhile skill. She joined Tom in looking around the room. Was it a safe assumption that his room was the same size? "Where do you usually use it, Sagaki-senpai?" she asked.

She placed a hand on her chin, thinking. "Nnn..." Paradise would have been the place where it would be least likely they'd be seen, but entering with just two people would probably be a mistake. Shadows attacked in groups, and Toshi didn't know how many could sneak up on them at once. Tom might have been the type to raid Paradise on his own (she thought of when they encountered him while they were trying to rescue Toru), but Toshimi valued her life too much to risk it for no real reason. Still, she didn't want to be contrary, and it wasn't like she had any better ideas. "I don't know..." she said, inwardly dismayed at what she was saying. "Maybe."

Tom nodded when she asked about the target.

"It's a wooden board, I put a foam backing on it. It's seen better days but should hold up for now.

Being the first floor, I usually just wait until late at night and slip out my window. Still not much space to practice in.

I thought about breaking into one of the gyms maybe or going over to the baseball diamond when it's not in use. Setting up tha target at the... oh what is it? The Home plate?"

Tom shrugged. The Paradise option had risks, and he wasn't willing to deal with them until he had a group brave enough to try it under controlled circumstances. He wasn't entirely sure that Toshi was someone who would volunteer for something like that.

"Ah, so you made it yourself?" she said. "That's pretty resourceful..."

Toshimi stared outside her own window, decisively not on the first floor. Climbing out the window was an impossibility here--how, exactly, had Tom gotten in? She couldn't exactly replace any stolen items, so Toshimi was almost always careful to lock the door. For a long, silent moment she considered asking him, but decided against it. She didn't want to seem ungrateful.

"That's right, home plate," she nodded with a very tiny hint of a laugh in her voice. As she remembered, 'home plate' was an English expression. How was it that Tom could remember that much about crime and murder, but not even the most basic fact about baseball? She shook her head, focusing on more serious matters. "But, if somebody saw us sneaking around the school at night..." she trailed off. There really wasn't any safe explanation for that. "There have been a lot of people hanging around there lately." She sighed, then smiled. "That's the problem with cities, I guess."

Tom's brow furrowed.

"Well I can keep us from being seen.

But now I'm curious, who's been hanging around the baseball field? Obviously people who don't belong there."

Tom seemed to think there was something suspicious was going on with the people at the baseball diamond.

She smiled and shook her head. "Just the same people who don't belong there as always. You know. Police, news reporters. The kind of people who have been hanging around the rest of the school lately. They've been on the sports fields, too."

"I guess if we ran into a reporter, you could probably get rid of them, but a police officer wouldn't be so easy. And if it was someone from the school, we'd probably never hear the end of it..." She paused. "But it's possible that we won't run into anybody, I suppose."

Tom put his hands in his pockets and shrugged.

"Most of stealth is just being where they won't look."

He scratched his head and got a thoughtful look on his face.

"And you know, if we do run across a cop we can always try and get information on the ace."

Toshimi considered Tom's statement for a moment, and was ready to dismiss it, but he was in her room. He was pretty much the authority on sneaking around. She shrugged back at him.

"The ace...?" she repeated. "You mean...if we ran into the police, you would ask them about...the murderer?" She was keeping the incredulity out of her voice and maintaining a pleasant tone, but at the same time, Toshimi played the scene out in her mind. At best, it ended with an unpleasant confrontation, and at worst...Toshimi wondered if it would be worth the trouble of saying anything more.

She turned her head away, trying to think. Wasn't there something she could say? She remembered, and blurted out, "I thought you didn't trust the police." She immediately covered her mouth. She hadn't meant to be contradictory. "Sorry," she mumbled.

Tom looked away for a moment.

"I don't, nor do I especially like them, but they have had actual access to the case and plenty of modern equipment.
They can give us more answers then we have and every piece of information would be useful."

He brushed himself off and turned toward th door.

"So are you ready to go?"
