Let us discuss for a moment.
Who: Tom and Keiichi
What: Tom asks for some answers
Where: An unused part of the boys dorm
When: Late in the evening
Why: Tom = stalker, seriously

Thomas waited. He was used to waiting after all. He'd temporarily put a hold on looking into Sato's death to figure out what ever Paradise is, and whether both investigations are connected. What Thomas needed now was someone who could tell him about what the Persona Users had found when they went into Paradise the first time, so he could compare their experiences to his own observations.

Ito seemed like the most level headed, the most rational, and hopefully the most likely to give him further answers.  He'd contemplated simply grabbing the young boy and pulling into a spot where they wouldn't be noticed, but then there would be a whole commotion. Instead Thomas opted to wait nearby the kitchen.

When Keiichi finally showed Tom waved him over into the more private spot he'd found for their discussion.

It was a bad day to begin with, primarily since Keiichi felt roughly like he'd been run over several times. No athlete was he, and dragging around a prop-but-still-heavy sword and engaging in combat would have been exhausting enough, but then one had to take into account the fact that the...creature that had resembled Toru had done one Hell of a number on the chef.

Those spells...Dia, was it?...they had helped take away the intense pain, but there was still dull, aching soreness beneath even as Keiichi cleaned up from his sparser dinner than usual. He simply hadn't had the energy to prepare anything advanced.

And then, he'd left...only to be flagged down by the guy who'd nearly gotten himself killed in there to begin with.

Keiichi sighed...but made no move away from the other boy, following him into the corner. "To what do I owe this," he asked, clutching at hurt ribs. "I still sort of feel a bit run-down from the other day..."

Tom cocked an eyebrow.

"You jumped into more fights then anyone else. And in a number of cases willing allowed yourself to be hit. Why would you do that if you wouldn't be able to adjust to the injuries later?"

Tom scratched his head. He had to remind himself that while Ito seemed reasonable, often his behavior just made no sense. He shook his head to clear the confusion and settle his gaze.

"I'm putting the peices together on Paradise. I wanted to get a report on your previous experiences there. You are rational and level headed. You're very intellegent and often see the right course of action in dangerous situations.
I think you'll give the best possible answers with the least amount of resistance. "

"You're talking to me like this is an interrogation..." Keiichi squared his shoulders. He was tall but thin, and not especially imposing...but he didn't want to give off the impression that he was going to allow himself to be walked over.

"I go into the fray because people have to. From experience, I can take a decent amount of punishment, even if I am sore afterwards. The only way to understand that place and how it works is to do it. There's no practice ground." If there was, he'd be there a lot more.

"Report is basically that we have no clue what the Hell's going on," the chef finally said. "If we do, I certainly haven't been told."

He was a second year at the high school who was now moonlighting as a swordsman. That was about all he knew, ridiculous as it all sounded.

Tom paused for a moment and scratched his chin. He looked Keiichi over from top to bottom.

"You swing your sword like it's a baseball bat. That makes sense given it's not real. You should get a real one, those aren't that hard to come by. A katana would be easy to get a hold of, and a good choice for you. I can get you a book on kendo, it would work well for your style, you aren't as fast as other people in the party, so you're better off trying to defend until you see an opening to attack.

Katana's do require some finesse, but I can show that to you once you have one."

He put a finger to his chin and tapped it.

"A practice area would be helpful. If my theory about paradise is right We could try and create one on the other side. A base of operations of sorts, but that may not work. I'll get to work on a plan b, along with the other things I'm doing."

He nodded to himself. He'd come to some kind of conclusion, that much was obvious.

"As far as a report..."

Tom looked around the small space, and grabbed two chairs, then reached into his pocket for a moment then pulled his hand out again.

"Alright then, just tell me what happened, from when you entered Paradise for the first time, why you did it, and what did all of you do up until I met you there."

Quietly, Keiichi nodded. Realistically, they needed some form of training, and more specifically, he needed to be able to fight. Properly.

"I appreciate that," the young man said. "That's a discussion for another day, probably. And best had with all of us."

He continued to listen...and couldn't say that he liked what he was hearing.

"Look," Keiichi began, looking the other man dead in the eyes. "I don't want to sound non-appreciative. I really don't. But I've known you for...what, a day now? Maybe two, tops?"

God, had it really only been that long? That stupid video game must have been eternal.

"There's not much of a story. There's really not. But whatever story there is, I'm not going to tell it to you away from everyone else. For better or worse, we're a team. A group."

Still...he doesn't want to completely shut the other guy down. "If you want to ask me any questions of a less group-wide nature, though, go ahead."

"You are a team." Thomas corrected.

"Just because I have a persona doesn't mean I intend to start joining in on group discussions. I have my own investigations to attend to. I'll help you when you need it, but otherwise..."

Tom cut himself off and returned to his contemplative face.

"You also happen to be a very obstructive team. I'd hoped that you'd be more forthcoming with information now that you were aware that I had knowledge of Paradise."

Tom sighed.

"Maybe if I told you what I suspect? We could exchange information? You are at least smart enough to offer some amount of insight."

There was enough off about that that Keiichi wanted to call the erstwhile detective on...but again, that would be counterproductive. He wasn't the leader of the group, not by a longshot.

"What you suspect? You know, I can't exactly say the fact that you seem to know so much is reassuring..." Far from it. Unsettling was more like it. "Okay. I'll bite. Exchange of information. Warning you now though...there's not much to tell."

Tom tapped his chin again and stood up, pacing back and fourth.

"Paradise is constantly changing, and it is clearly influenced by the whims of the person trapped inside. It gives them their deepest desire..."

Suddenly he paused, and turned toward Keiichi.

"Oubai disappeared, you all talked like he had been to paradise before. Was Oubai taken into Paradise? Did it respond the same was as it did for Ishinomori?"

Keiichi paused for a moment, and then nodded. "From what I've been told, yes. I wasn't a major part of the group that went in after Oubai...but yes, he was in that place at one point."

"So, welcome to where everyone else is. People are disappearing and ending up in this place. That's about all I can tell you."

Tom shook his head.

"I'm a lot further along then that."

He flipped open his bag, and pulled out a psychology book. The same one Kiriko had pulled from his hands days ago. he flipped open the book to the relative pages, and handed it to Keiichi.

"Persona is a term most widely associated with Carl Jung, a German Psychologist. It refers to the outer self, the mask you show to the world. It's one of the three most well known archetypes, along with the anima and the animus, the true inner self for males and females respectively.
The third is the Shadow Self. It represents hidden desires, and repressed emotions. According to Jung, Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is.

If your friends found found a second Oubai, that would support the idea that in Paradise, the Shadow Self manifests as a physical being, and that whole world then shapes itself to the desires of that persons shadow."

"You know," Keiichi began, after having listened to Thomas' obviously well researched thoughts. "That makes a lot of sense. We've done some minor research of our own into the personas themselves, the origins of them. Mine...seems to be an Indian volcano god."

A pause.

"There is, however, one problem

Another pause.

"That DOESN'T explain why the repressed self turns into a giant tentacle monster," Ito-san followed up with. "Psychologically, what you're saying may be true. But if you haven't noticed...that place doesn't seem to follow most rules of the real world."

Research, in other words, didn't seem like the best way to Keiichi of figuring out the place. That required logic. Logic in a place controlled by...lord knew what?

"It is odd that the persona appear to be related to various mythologies from around the world."

Tom moved back toward the chairs, and sat down again.

"Agreed, it doesn't explain why the monsters."

He ran his fingers through his hair and let out a breath.

"And no, it doesn't follow the rules of the real world, that doesn't mean it lacks rules of it's own. Figuring out those rules, and understanding paradise will be what we need to anticipate what it'll throw at us.

I've begun looking into some of the stories that sound similar to the paradise rumor. A set of gates in the U.S. that supposedly lead to the various levels of hell, a tv stations in a small town that can only work at a certain time of day under certain weather conditions, A tunnel in Sibera that leads to another world.

It'll take me some time to narrow down the lists to find what fits and what doesn't. Nothing about Paradise though which suggests that A.) It's a recent phenomenon, and B.) It's a local one."

"There's a bunch of things we don't understand," Keiichi agreed. "Right now, our biggest problem isn't what the place is, or what happens to people when they get there. To me, the real question is HOW they get there."

The other stuff was important, possibly to figure out those things. But at the end of the day...

"I just want to know what's going on. I'm not a detective. I'm a guy who likes to cook and is in way over his head."

"That was the other thing I was hoping you could answer. Has anyone questioned Oubai or Ishinomori about how they found themselves in Paradise?"

His eyes drifted up for a moment.

"I'd been working on the case of Kei Sato, that's what lead me to you. Oubai's disappearance sounds just like what happened to Sato. If your friends were aware of Paradise before they vanished, then we know they couldn't have walked in by accident. That almost confirms foul play.
That's three attacks, with only one ending up in murder. Once is a tragedy, twice is a coincidence, three times is a pattern."

Tom stood up and began walking rather quickly around the room.

"That means there's a serial killer in this school. One we *know* the police can't track down, there would be no way for them to confirm a death if it was caused by Paradise.

Now I know I need to get the police report on Sato. If they can't find a cause of death then we know he was killed by Paradise."

He turned to look at Keiichi.

"If all this is true, then we are the only people who can stop the murders. And I would lay good odds that our killer is a Persona user."

"..."

It wasn't necessarily the "I don't believe you" sort of ellipsis, but it was a surprised one. Murder hadn't exactly been Keiichi's first thought when it came to the recent series of debacles. It still, if he had to be brutally honest, wasn't. Sure, the situation Sagaki was describing COULD be due to a serial murderer, but...

"You know, you're talking like you're out of a video game." Keiichi didn't smile, but he offered a shrug of his shoulders. "I can't deny anything that you're saying. But, at the same time, it all sounds a little bit...over the top. There is one thing I do agree with you on at this point in time: we ARE the only people who can stop whatever the Hell's going on. The rest of it I'm iffy on, though."

Understatement, that, but really, this whole thing made no sense to begin with.

"That's because I spent last night running around inside a video game."

Tom's usual tone made it very hard to tell if he was trying for a witty reply, or merely saying the obvious.

"And if you think this is over the top do I need to point to the bruises you received from your monster opponents tentacles because you used the Indian volcano god that came from your head to light it on fire?"

Tom paused, he let out a breath. He moved back to the chairs and sat down across from Keiichi, fixing him with a stare.

"You're strong, you're smart, and you have a good head on your shoulders. Despite a complete lack of training, you've managed to pull through this situation.

And even though you didn't ask to be put here, you know exactly what your allies should be focusing on.

In a dangerous situation you've shown courage, not just to take hits, but to stand up and do the right thing, and regardless of anything else, that is the most important thing a human being can do.

In all other things you are completely spineless and afraid, which is something that I don't have the luxury of indulging right now."

He leaned back in the chair, again resting his hand on his chin.

"Everything we have is speculation though. What we know is that something is taking people into Paradise against the will, and in at least one case..."

Tom sat up straight again.

"THAT'S IT! The victim is gone for two weeks, during which people reported seeing the victim in public acting strangely.

If the victim is pulled into Paradise, and their shadow manifests. What if it's their Shadow who is running around while they are trapped in Paradise?
That may give us a way of knowing when someone is attacked, and serves to further tie Kei Sato to murder by Paradise."

"You," the young man pronounced, drawing himself up to his full height, "have considerable nerve to know me for two days and tell me what I am and am not in this world."

Spineless was one Hell of an adjective to use for a man who'd stared down the son of a noted Yakuza family in the middle of the night.

Really, Keiichi wasn't going to vocalize this particular thought...but if Thomas knew so damned much, if everything he said was true...wouldn't that make him a spectacular candidate to be the serial killer he was so very obsessed with?

Something Ito would file away for future reference.

"Again, if you notice...I have not once said you're wrong about anything you've told me. Is some of it far-fetched, yeah, but as you point out, so is the fact that I've got a volcano god in my head."

For a moment, he almost laughed, before shaking his head. "You know, you fit in pretty well with us. Because you have the same problem most of the group does. You're smart. You've got worthwhile things to say."

Dragging his tired body up out of the chair, he turns to leave, but braces himself against the wall. "You just don't seem to have any desire to present your thoughts in a way that doesn't piss people off. At any rate, we can discuss this later if you want to. It's late, I'm sore, and I need to go have a nice lay-down in bed for a few hours. Or a few dozen."

With that, he's on the move down the hall. Thomas Sagaki isn't the nicest or the most genteel of the group, but he does seem to speak his mind.

If nothing else, he appreciates that, even if the third year is a tad rough around the edges.

Thomas crossed his arms, and watched the other boy walk away. Ito had certainly earned a good nights rest.

Toms assessment of Ito had proved correct. Brave, but unsure of himself, smart, but misguided at times. A lot of potential.

And certainly they had made a great deal of progress. Tom had succeeded in connecting The murderer of Kei Sato to Paradise, and now understood that other world a great deal more.

The more Tom thought about it, the more he worried. He knew he didn't want to be didn't want to be a member of Team Persona, but people like Ito and Aoi, they were the kind of people who drew in others like moths to fire.

Tom was going to have to be very very careful here.
