THE SLOPES

"Does anyone need help attaching their skis?" One of the instructors asks at the conclusion of their crash course on how to go, stop, and not die with a pair of planks strapped to your feet. The directions to cross-country, downhill, slalom, and the bunny slopes are handily posted nearby, as well as directions back to the main lodge for the wussy hot chocolate afficiandos.

"Can you look at mine? These aren't my normal skis and the clasps just don't work the same way. I can't get them at all," Kozue chimed in, waving her hand a little. In the presence of another group or another instructor, she'd probably have already been geared up and onto one of the more exhilarating down-hill slopes, but when the ski instructor was adorable? Well, you manufactured problems like I don't know how these straps work, please help.

"Sure!" the instructor responds with all the telltale signs that he has been ensnared by Kondo Kozue. He marches over to assist with a little more enthusiasm than is altogether necessary.

15-love, advantage Kondo. She smiled, proffered her foot where the straps were ostensibly impossible to work, and made conversation. "Thank you, really. So, if you work here, you must get to ski the slopes a lot, right?"

Kiriko had not really come to the skiing trip for the skiing, she realized as she looked over the slopes the place had to offer and tried to determine which way to go. She was no athlete, and the last time she had been hurtling down a hill with planks of wood strapped to her feet, it had been Paradise and definitely not of her own volition. Sure, she hadn't crashed into anything or gone tumbling over, but it was Paradise - a Paradise set up like a video game, at that. Her feet might as well have been glued to the board.

Shuffling off to the bunny slopes to work her way up to a more legitimate hill might work... depending on who was watching.

Kai was already at the bunny slopes when Kiriko shuffled over. The skis had been on his feet for a few minutes at least, and he'd gotten the basic technique from the instructor, but he stood just out of the way of people pushing off, pondering the incline, however slight it was. Snow was fascinating to him, but he'd already gotten his fill of making lopsided snowballs and shaking trees to make icicles fall off. Skiing was the next logical step, right?

But he was, first and foremost, just as much of a cowardly lion as he'd been before his dungeon, and so he stood there, too intimidated to go forward and too afraid to go back to the lodge. Kiriko's arrival was a welcome respite from it.

"Hi, Ikeda-san!" he said, a smile on his face that was only slightly tinged with apprehension.

"Hey, senpai."

She had been hoping not to run into too many of her fellow teammates here, but if it had to be anybody, Kai was alright. A quick assessment was in order before she turned her attention back to the hills: He seemed to be doing better, and though she caught the apprehension in his voice, it was hardly comparable to the way his hugdoll had been scrambling away from her on their last significant encounter.

"Guess you're no expert, either?"

Holding the equipment, Kouchisei's expression changed from passive to confused to resigned; he knew what most pieces were for but had little idea how to relax. It felt odd having to walk by sliding. He didn't feel right, and he was certain he looked like a duck on land.

He was already undoing the straps by the time the instructor had finished, and was checking out the sign.
