BUS RIDE
[info]disappear_npc
2010-11-15 10:36 pm UTC (link)
The lodge is relatively nearby, only a couple of hours away by bus, and the charter bus starts loading the team early. They almost have the chartered bus to themselves, with only a small handful of other people there at the platform and meaning to ride with them. Everyone's baggage is loaded - it's just a matter of getting in, picking a seat, and waiting.

Kozue, who has taken a remarkably active (for her at least) role in planning this whole venture, has been directing the bus attendant in loading her luggage properly. And the luggage of anyone else on the team who seems in need of it, given the opportunity to use free ('free') labor to do so.

Now that everything is prepared, she has taken up a seat near the middle of the bus, seemingly content in the amount of effort she has put forth.

Kiriko, meanwhile, was trying not to make it deliberate and obvious-looking that she was choosing to sit somewhere else. There was nothing rude in the way she quietly slipped past Kozue's row for a seat nearer to the back - she had, after all, participated in a undertone exchange on the general aptitude of luggage boys just outside the door - but her strategy was to avoid eye contact as she breezed by and continued towards the back of the bus.

Stepping onto the bus, Kouchisei gazed down the isle and thought of where to sit; the back let him see anything coming, the middle made him unnoticable in a crowd, and the front was secluded. He took a seat near the front and took a book out of his bag.

Toru, clad in a new dress bought at the last moment after Kai's dungeon ruined his first, was the platonic ideal of "uncomfortable" as he got on the bus. There was no part of him that wanted to be there, dressed like that, and yet he still was.

Damn Reizo. He was sick, too, after that dungeon! Running around in the cold in a wet dress was an invitation for viruses to attack him, as it had turned out, and the head cold he had was the price he physically paid.

He took a seat near the back, coughing and sneezing all the while.

LODGE ARRIVAL
[info]disappear_npc
2010-11-15 10:39 pm UTC (link)
The rooms are posh and cozy enough that it's a shame everyone is only staying for one night. The whole team is housed in one lodge building, with two to a room. There's a common room with an incredibly fuzzy rug, comfortable furniture and a fireplace going.

Crackling fire made Kouchisei recollect his own house; it wasn't warm, per say, but it was somewhere where he felt safe. He knew the history of every object. Therefore this house, filled with everything he knew nothing about, made him feel strange. The only thing familiar about it was the people he was with.

So he would have to make sure he was partnered with someone suitable. They needed an idea of personal space and not to talk to much. Most in his opinion seemed that way with him.

Maybe this could change that.

Toru would have felt a lot better about the ski trip if it were not for his most recent adventure in Paradise. Running around in the cold and wet in a ruined dress and bare feet was a recipe for a nasty cold, and now he was feeling the effects. The only solace Toru could take in it was that he was still on a vacation with his friends, and that with any luck, Noboru would have caught it, as well.

At the moment, he was sitting on the floor, back against the common room's sofa, flanked by his luggage. Though his bland-name PSP was there with him, he was mainly occupied with sneezing loudly into a series of tissues.

"If you're staying in, you should bring back cocoa for everybody," Kiriko directed as she breezed through the room, giving Toru a wide enough berth to avoid contamination from an errant sneeze. She had already left her bag upstairs and had her provided ski-suit draped over one arm as she split her attention between exploring the place and answering texts. The phone closed as she dropped into an armchair and looked up.

"I guess I'll have to leave my phone here?"

Though she had already thoroughly searched the suit for pockets, she still sounded somewhat hopeful.

"I-I'm not necessarily s-staying in- ACHOO!" Toru responded. From his tone and sneezing, it was evident that he likely would be. He envied Kiriko for her good health and ability to wear non-humiliating clothing.

"Guess so. Want me to watch it for you?"

"You know, so nobody tries to steal it or anything while you're out." Toru looked a little downcast at Kiriko's reaction.

"I don't have to, obviously... but it's not like I'm going outside when I'm feeling like this."

Masami, being a wussy hot chocolate aficionado(well, more like a tea aficionado, but hot chocolate was plenty good too), spent only a short time out on the slopes before returning to the lodge. It wasn't that she disliked skiing really; she just liked lounging by the fire more.

Since the vast majority of the team hadn't come back yet, she claimed herself a spot on the rug close to the fire, where she lay down and started reading a shoujo manga volume.

Tom arrived at the lodge, with Max's head sticking out of his coat. He kicked his feet against the door frame to knock the snow off.

He pulled the coat open and set the puppy on the floor, and Max quickly shook himself, and then began wagging his tail and sniffing around the room.

Toru looked over to Tom and the dog, visibly surprised. Since the business with Seiko happened, he'd only seen his senpai, what, once? Where had he gone?

Toru waved and called over to him. "Hey, Sagaki-senpai! I haven't seen you around lately. What's been going on?"

As an afterthought, he addressed Max. "You brought your dog, too... Is that allowed?"

"I don't think it'll be a problem. Beside, I couldn't leave him at home, my dad doesn't see to it that I have food or the things I need, I don't want to think about what he'd do to Max." Tom set Max on the floor, and recognizing Toru from the beach trip, the puppy ran over, wagging his tail happily.

"Uh... nothing has really been going on. I've just been studying the case and trying to get a better idea of... our situation."

THE SLOPES

"Does anyone need help attaching their skis?" One of the instructors asks at the conclusion of their crash course on how to go, stop, and not die with a pair of planks strapped to your feet. The directions to cross-country, downhill, slalom, and the bunny slopes are handily posted nearby, as well as directions back to the main lodge for the wussy hot chocolate afficiandos.

"Can you look at mine? These aren't my normal skis and the clasps just don't work the same way. I can't get them at all," Kozue chimed in, waving her hand a little. In the presence of another group or another instructor, she'd probably have already been geared up and onto one of the more exhilarating down-hill slopes, but when the ski instructor was adorable? Well, you manufactured problems like I don't know how these straps work, please help.

Kiriko had not really come to the skiing trip for the skiing, she realized as she looked over the slopes the place had to offer and tried to determine which way to go. She was no athlete, and the last time she had been hurtling down a hill with planks of wood strapped to her feet, it had been Paradise and definitely not of her own volition. Sure, she hadn't crashed into anything or gone tumbling over, but it was Paradise - a Paradise set up like a video game, at that. Her feet might as well have been glued to the board.

Shuffling off to the bunny slopes to work her way up to a more legitimate hill might work... depending on who was watching.

Kai was already at the bunny slopes when Kiriko shuffled over. The skis had been on his feet for a few minutes at least, and he'd gotten the basic technique from the instructor, but he stood just out of the way of people pushing off, pondering the incline, however slight it was. Snow was fascinating to him, but he'd already gotten his fill of making lopsided snowballs and shaking trees to make icicles fall off. Skiing was the next logical step, right?

But he was, first and foremost, just as much of a cowardly lion as he'd been before his dungeon, and so he stood there, too intimidated to go forward and too afraid to go back to the lodge. Kiriko's arrival was a welcome respite from it.

"Hi, Ikeda-san!" he said, a smile on his face that was only slightly tinged with apprehension.

"Hey, senpai."

She had been hoping not to run into too many of her fellow teammates here, but if it had to be anybody, Kai was alright. A quick assessment was in order before she turned her attention back to the hills: He seemed to be doing better, and though she caught the apprehension in his voice, it was hardly comparable to the way his hugdoll had been scrambling away from her on their last significant encounter.

"Guess you're no expert, either?"

Holding the equipment, Kouchisei's expression changed from passive to confused to resigned; he knew what most pieces were for but had little idea how to relax. It felt odd having to walk by sliding. He didn't feel right, and he was certain he looked like a duck on land.

He was already undoing the straps by the time the instructor had finished, and was checking out the sign.

HOT COCOA BREAK
[info]anthesphoria
2010-11-18 11:44 pm UTC (link)
Kozue actually had spent a great deal of her time on the slopes—a break from her normal avoidance of anything requiring effort—but she was getting freezing cold. She left her skis at the door and stepped into the lodge for a cup of hot cocoa. Extra whipped cream. Maybe could they add a free sample of cookies along with it?

Reizo was sprawled out on the couch when someone slipped back inside the dorm, one long arm held up into the air with the remote control pointed at the TV. He changed the channel every five of ten seconds, and though the volume was set to low, the flickering screen was sure to be at least somewhat annoying.

Eventually the delinquent boy hoisted himself up with a sigh and flicked the television off with a click. He shook a cigarette loose from the pack and drew it out with his teeth, where he could hold it in place and light it, and then swiveled about to see who was sharing the room with him again.

His expression didn't change when he saw Kozue, but he did stand up and mosey on over to her, where he pulled out a chair, spun it around, straddled it and rested his chin on the high back of it.

“Hi.”

"Hey," Kozue said, looking up; she wasn't entirely surprised that it was Reizo who had been channel surfing (after all, the room smelled of cigarettes), but there was always some element of shock in having a boy as big and intimidating as Reizo suddenly sit down anywhere near you. But she was in a good mood––philanthropy, success at skiing and flirting with cute older men, and a steady supply of cocoa had bolstered her mood substantially for the day. She smiled. "Marshmallow?" There was a dish of them, meant for the cocoa; she nudged it over.

Then, "Not hitting the slopes?" It was a very comfortable, companionable response; Kozue realized with some interest that while she was still wary of Reizo, she nowhere near as scared as she might have been six months ago. But the thought passed, in favor of mmm cocoa.

His eyes flicked down towards the marshmallows and he waved the offer off with a small shake of his head, and the indicated his cigarette with a point of his finger, as if that explained his refusal. He was unusually calm right now, and he seemed mildly distracted, even when he did perk up to answer her question.

“I already had a few goes,” he explained, looking out one of the convenient windows and towards the sparkling white landscape. “I just wanted a break.”

He tilted his head, and the bright white stick of his cigarette wriggled in his mouth as he looked up towards the ceiling. He wasn't sure how to approach the topic, really, and subtlety had never been Reizo's deal, so resorting back to the old standard would just have to be how he handled it.

“What's up with you and Kiriko?”

"What do you mean?" Kozue's brow furrowed. Something was up? Well, no, it was true. Things had felt different recently; distant. And not the kind of functional distance that Kozue had wanted, precisely, although it felt like she had that. Something was up that other people had noticed? That was bad.

"Did she say something?" That was the conclusion Kozue hoped for; if even Reizo was noticing a difference in their behavior, then Kozue was not sure if she could stomach the guilt for it.

He nodded and reached up, pinching the cigarette out, and then slipping it home behind one ear so he could finally take her up on the offer of marshmallows. He chewed on one thoughtfully, watching the pretty girl across from him, doing his best not to look surly or anything that might even be a little off-putting.

Reizo was not, as anyone could guess, a big problem solver with words. His way of tackling problems was, well, he literally tackled them if he could, so he was now wondering why, exactly, he'd thought it a good idea to jump in head first into the mysterious and archaic world of girl problems. Was it because he was worried for his girlfriend, after she'd confided in him, or was it something else? Maybe he was just as stupid as everyone thought he was.

“Well, she told me she was, uh,” he rubbed the side of his chin, brow knitting together as he recalled it,” worried about you guys continuing to be friends or something, because you didn't wanna lean on her anymore or something.”

Eating marshmallows instead of smoking his cigarette did make Reizo seem less off-putting, at least to Kozue; she took another sip of her hot chocolate and watched the glass for a moment.

"… I guess that counts as something being up, yeah." Had Kiriko really been worried about this? Worried enough to bring it up with her boyfriend? Certainly, Kozue had never before really talked about her friends with her boyfriends, but this might have been as symptomatic of how little she valued either or both groups, previous to this year. But had it been real sort of worry or just a casual mention? "She was really worried? But I thought, I'd thought we were pretty clear…" She tapered off. Like the awkwardness between them recently hadn't been a sign that they weren't clear and okay? She sighed in the direction of her slowly-cooling mug of (free, hurray) cocoa. "Do you think I should say something to her?"

Reizo considered the question as he chewed more marshmallow. Several puffy clouds o' candy disappeared before he stood up and wandered over to the NOW CONJOINED KITCHEN? IDK, EITHER WAY he made his way back to Kozue and the table with a bottle of water, and rejoined her.

He took a pull from the bottle, pushed the marshmallows away from him to better stave off the temptation, and cocked his head, the white of his half-finished cigarette poking out from behind one ear.

"Probably."

He shrugged, expansively, and shook his head.

"I don't get it. Aren't you two best friends or somethin'? Now apparently she's wondering why you're friends at all if she can't, I dunno, protect you because she doesn't have the money to go shoe shopping. Like you need stupid reasons like that to be friends to start with."

Well, didn't that just beat all. Kozue grimaced into her cocoa. (It was getting low, was there more extra cocoa she could take somewhere?) It made sense, in a way, but Reizo had made it seem silly, petty. Was Kiriko really worried that they couldn't be friends because she couldn't protect Kozue or keep up with her in shoe shopping?

"Well, we're best friends," Kozue grumbled, retaking possession of the marshmallows. "It's... complicated."

Which was, hopefully, a way of staving off the question of why Kiriko was bothered, or why Kozue couldn't simply dismiss the question outright, or why she felt a pang of guilt and pain for Kiriko even though her friend was likely now enjoying the slopes (free) and having a great time.

The big delinquent rolled his eyes showily at that.

"You girls are what's complicated."

And this was coming from a boy who was poised to take over an empire of death, destruction, and all sorts of other complicated things.

"It's dumb. Even if she can't go shopping or protect you," there were some serious air quotes around protect, "you still get along, live together, like the same things, and spend a lot of your time fighting horrific goop monsters. You only really need one thing to bring you together and become friends."

Kouchisei was satisfied that he'd given it a go; a hot cup of tea had just seemed nicer. He had made his way onto the slopes, outside of his comfort zone, so it was with an easy mind with the knowledge he'd tried that he could make himself a hot cup of tea.
