WHO: Kozue and Toshi
WHAT: Snowboarding game!
WHERE: Dat arcade
WHEN: Before ski trip, after school sometime
WHY: Because it's totally like the real thing!

Since it had come under NakaCo management earlier that year, the arcade had been doing better and better. Today, too, it was crowded with students and other bored people taking shelter from Iburi's cold winter for a little bit of gaming before they headed home, but not so crowded that there weren't plenty of open machines. As the arcade did better and better, the manager Murakami was more and more obsequious to Toshi whenever he saw her, and so by the time she and Kozue made it to the "1260!" snowboarding machine, they had an official arcade coin purse filled with free tokens.

Maybe it was too cold for anyone to want to think about winter sports, or maybe everyone was out of town and actually snowboarding, but either way the machine was empty and cycling through its EXTREME WINTER SPORTS WITH ROCK GUITAR montage when they got there.

"Do you want to go first, Kondo-san, or should I? I've never played this one before, so I don't really know what to do."

"I haven't, either," Kozue admitted, "but I dated a guy who had the high score last spring," she added, peering at the machine. Did he still? Maybe she could beat his score, and leave with a sense of satisfaction. That would require being good at the game, but... if there was something that she had the capacity to excel at, why couldn't it be a simple video game with only dubious connections to an actual skill?

"I'll try it if you don't mind. I think I remember what he did, mostly."

"Oh yeah?" Toshimi watched the machine go through its animation, wondering if it would show the high score screen or if it would be quicker just to wait for it to come up after playing a round. The game really wanted to convince passerby that it was cool; the animation showed no sign of ending.

She held the coin purse out to Kozue and nodded, "Go ahead."

Kozue opened the coin purse, and pulled out a handful of tokens, before hopping onto the machine; she seemed confident in it, at least marginally so, as she planted her feet and dropped the tokens in.

"Let me know if I start looking like a complete idiot, alright?" She asked over her shoulder, with a smile and a laugh in her voice; "I've seen some people get way too into games. Like that zombie shooting one, too." The game started up, and Kozue's attention fixed to the screen; after a moment where she was required to choose her snowboarder's clothing color and customizable board, the game began.

She didn't make a great showing; there was a bit of flailing, and her little sprite went off the track and slammed into a snowbank before completing half of the track. "Well..." She frowned, climbing down. "Wanna give it a shot?"
