Kindred Artists
Who: Kai and Kouki
Where: Kouki's house
When: When school would normally be taking place, shortly after Seiji's death.
What: Art, movies, and things.
Why: It was a promise.

After the school had abruptly closed, it hadn't taken long for Kai and Kouki to form plans to spend time with one another. They were, after all, good friends who enjoyed the company of one another. And this time, it was to be a meeting in Kouki's house. During an hour in which they would normally be sitting through afternoon classes, they met at the front door and proceeded inside to watch the DVD that Kai had brought with him.

Kouki wasn't one of those kids who had a TV in his room, but he was also fine with this fact. The family's TV was in the main room of the house, with both a couch and a dining table near enough to watch from. At the moment, he sat at the latter, with a sketchpad and pencil held in his hands. He wasn't drawing much, however- he was more focused on the action on the screen. He and Kai (who was sitting on the couch, behind him and out of his field of vision) were watching an animated movie. As the young hero traveled through strange lands, pursuing magic gemstones and getting into outlandish adventures, he intently stared at it, as if it were the most important thing in the world to him.

He laughed in response. "You're so silly, Kai-sama! You don't need to apologize for nothing."

"Sweet? Yeah, I guess so." The look on Kouki's face was oddly thoughtful, and his body language uncomfortable. "And I suppose it is plain. I dunno- I just felt like drawing it. I'm happy you like it, though! Really happy." He was talking faster now, and fiddled with his pencil in his hand. "Because it really seems like Ataru wants to be his friend. He likes him a lot, even if Mikoto is mean and competes with him and everything."

Kouki hadn't even noticed the movie in the background until Kai paused it. "Oh, thanks! I forgot it was still going." He, too, looked at the paused image on the screen, until he got his hair ruffled.

"Nah, he doesn't. You're just being silly now, Kai-sama!" He ruffled his hair back, leaning forward over the boy to reach. "I couldn't summon a demon, even if I tried! And you're the last one I'd summon a demon after, anyways."

"Yeah. Ataru's a great guy!" Kai nodded. "That's what I like about this movie - Ataru has a lot to lose if he fails, but even still he never stopped trying to be Mikoto's friend. He's just a good person."

He looked askance at Kouki, noticing that something was off about him. He was acting strange by Kouki-standards. Too...normal, almost. Flustered and talking too fast. Was something wrong?

"Haha, that's good! Bayobarona is a scary demon." Acting on an urge, he leaned over and grabbed Kouki, hugging him tightly. They had been getting subtly more physical ever since the idol contest, and now seemed like an appropriate time. Still, Kai pulled away quickly, like he was afraid Kouki would fly away if he stayed too long. "I wouldn't wanna hurt you, either."

"Hm...are you okay, Yoshida-chan? You seem distracted."

"I think it's good that he doesn't give up on him. That's important. Even if somebody is scary, or doing the wrong thing... it means a lot if you can still see the good in them." For all of his smiling, Kouki still looked strangely thoughtful. He didn't even notice the look that Kai gave him.

"Scary demons... those are bad. Well, obviously. I would nev-" This statement was cut off by Kai's hug. Even though he pulled away quickly, Kouki was still left with a strange look on his face. He was redder, too, and didn't meet Kai's eyes at first. "That's good. We won't hurt each other... yeah. That's good."

He didn't let this aura of uncertainty persist. A much happier look crept onto the boy's face, and he sat upright. "I'm fine! You keep worrying and apologizing so much, Kai-sama! It's really- ah. Oh." He had locked eyes with Kai, and seemed to read into his expression.

"It's fine. It's fine."

With this, he seemed to fall forward. It was a calculated plunge, however, that brought him into an exceedingly compromising position directly on top of Kai. His face hovered a scant centimeter from the other boy's, and he balanced himself with one hand on the back of the couch, the other on Kai's leg.

Then the centimeter was gone.

!

There was no way this was an accident.

Oh God oh God oh God -

Those were Kai's thoughts as he found himself beneath Kouki, being kissed by the younger boy. It wasn't entirely unpleasant, at least - Kouki was smoother than Kai had ever given him credit for. He hadn't suspected anything up until the last second. And it was nice - it had been years since Kai had been kissed like this, and he allowed himself to enjoy the sensation for a little bit before pulling his head back.

"I..." he gasped, before realizing he had nothing to say. His face was astoundingly flushed and he was looking at everywhere that wasn't Kouki. "Was that intentional!?" he finally burst out. It was the most pressing question on his mind. With Kouki, one never knew.

Now that Kai had pulled back, Kouki was left sprawled out on top of him. His limbs were everywhere, his chin rested on the older boy's chest, and his face was somewhere between embarrassment, shock, and happiness.

He then pulled the stupidest of smiles. "Yup."

"I shoulda done this weeks ago... sorry." Kouki began to push himself upwards a bit, moving his arms to get a better source of balance. This source, of course, was Kai. With no regard for personal space or where his hands came in contact with the other boy, he steadied himself into a sitting position that was still somewhat on top of him.

"Did I do alright? Ehehehe..."

Kai was still so very red, but managed to register Kouki's response. Also that Kouki was sitting on his lap now. What.

"Y-You did...? Yes, it was... You wanted to do that?" Kai couldn't seem to get a grasp on his thoughts. Kouki had just admitted that he'd wanted to kiss him for weeks. Oh God.

Kai did the only thing he could think to do, which was wrap his arms around Kouki and pull him into a tight embrace, not certain if he'd ever let go.

"I'm glad you did that," he said, and blushed harder when he realized that he was telling the truth.

"Yeah, I wanted to. Because I like you, Kai-sama. A lot. More than anybody else." The look in his eyes was strange now, almost alien to any behavior Kouki had shown before. It was like a layer of his person had been removed. What remained was an honest, raw smile and a worried look in his eyes.

"Was it the right thing? D-did I screw up? You're not angr-" Kai's hug caught him by surprise. The boy allowed himself to be pulled towards the other, and hugged him back as best he could.

"...but I'm glad you're glad, Kai-sama." With all of the strength in his wiry limbs, Kouki clung to Kai in a way he'd never done before. This was no longer his casual disregard for personal space- this was an honest desire manifested in honest actions.

"I like you too, Yoshida-chan," Kai murmured into Kouki's hair, squeezing him tighter. It felt good to say out loud, to realize that he'd been wanting to say it for a long time. He held Kouki and savored the feeling for a long moment.

After they'd broken apart, Kai pulled his legs back against his chest, feeling vaguely exposed and intimidated and confused by that fact. This was Kouki, he didn't have any reason to be afraid of him. They trusted each other. But trusted each other enough to do this?

Kai shook his head. "How long?" Well, he was curious. It was hard to discern Kouki's mental processes on any given day, much less how they'd changed over time. "A-And what do we do now?"

Kouki broke off of the embrace looking pleased (and perhaps a little disappointed it was over). Even apart from Kai, he still sat close on the couch and looked hungrily at his fellow artist's face. It was alien in that he'd never looked that way before, but it ultimately appeared to be a natural part of Kouki- just one that had never had reason to surface before.

"I'm not sure. At least since the end of summer break. Something like that." His face flushed. "I... didn't know you'd like me back. Take me seriously. I'd have said something sooner, but, like... I'm Kouki. KY. There didn't seem to be a chance that you'd take me seriously."

The boy watched his own feet, now kicking back and forth over the edge of the couch. "To be honest, I hadn't planned this far. I just wanted to see if I'd succeed or not- not what would happen on the chance that I did." Suddenly bright eyes shifted over to Kai. "My dream... would be to keep going. We both like each other, yeah? So it'd be good for us!"

It seemed that the low-pitched uncertainty that marked the kiss was being replaced with something closer to the natural behavior of a Kouki.

Kai avoided Kouki's intense stare, not because it was unpleasant - in fact, it was oddly thrilling to be the sole focus of someone's attention like this - but because it was making him feel too awkward to think.

"Really?" This was a surprise. Kai would have to remember to pore over the details of the end of break later.

What Kouki said next took him by surprise; his face noticeably softened, and he put a hand on Kouki's shoulder. "I would have taken you seriously, Yoshida-chan. I am now."

Kouki's earnest answer to the question of where this would go made Kai flush just slightly. His body hummed with a strange energy that felt like nothing else, and the hand on Kouki's shoulder trembled. "I-I...I'd like that, I think. If it went on."

He allowed himself a small smile at this. It was nice to be telling the whole truth for once.

The overwhelming excitement of the moment - the kiss, the confession, the realization that each others' feelings were mutual - spurred him to do something drastic then:

He leaned over and pressed a light, hesitant kiss to the corner of Kouki's mouth, then moved in and kissed him full-on, squeezing Kouki's shoulder gently.

Kai was smiling when he pulled away, soft and easy and genuine. "I would do this with you, if you, uh, want me, I mean. I'd be your..." he trailed off, feeling that the word "boyfriend" made him sound like a middle school girl and that "partner" was way too serious. "...like your kindred artist. Only better." This he accentuated by bringing the hand that was on Kouki's shoulder up to stroke his cheek.

"Y-you would? You... are?" This made Kouki's eyes widen in shock. Everything about him seemed to go loose, out of focus. Like he'd hit a critical error and wasn't responding. This lasted until Kai spoke again. Instead of saying a response, he expressed himself with a look. One that went directly into the other boy's eyes, sharp and direct as an arrow, carrying a message that no arrow could.

That was the right response. Everything is going well. You got me.

It looked like it was the first time that Kouki's feelings were even remotely apparent. What he had said a moment ago had stripped away the haze that normally obfuscated the motives and emotions behind his actions. Not yet an open book, but still easier to read than ever before.

When Kai kissed him, his eyes were the easiest to read. I'm so glad. This is good. I love you. Even his body language, for once, communicated this. I'm so glad. He wasn't just receiving the kiss, he was kissing Kai, too. This is good. He leaned in, to be closer to the boy. I love you. His face broke into the most genuine smile yet when they broke apart.

"I do want you, Kai! More than anything else. We'll be kindred... artistes! Yeah!" Kouki allowed Kai to stroke his face, but soon enough fell into another tight hug. "This is going to be the best, Kai-sama. The absolute best."

Kai was struck by Kouki's direct gaze, so much so that his mouth fell slightly ajar when those eyes connected with his. The intensity of it stirred something in his chest, and if his face hadn't been red before, it certainly was now. Flushed with happiness and delight, that is.

Seeing Kouki so open emotionally, and so excited, had a strange effect on Kai. It felt like he was getting drunk off of it, and he dived into that feeling. After he squeezed Kouki back, he stooped down and kissed him again and again on the mouth, cradeling the back of his head in his hands. He felt overwhelmed, delirious with Kouki's infectious affection and enthusiasm, and his own joy.

He wants me I love him I want him.

He broke away, finally, with an equally big smile on his face. "It already is the best. We'll make art projects and hang out and I'll take you shopping and to Okinawa and -"

Now he was just babbling, but it was a pleasant babble. Babble fueled by excitement and love and every other positive feeling Kai could name.
