He regarded the boy carefully.

"The murder case isn't a secret, but certainly the details, anyone who may or may not be involved that's a different story.

As far as how much work I'd want you to do? I don't expect you to do anything different, just keep your eyes and ears open.

In exchange, as for what I'll give you; I'm good at digging. I can find information, contacts, do you favors. I provide you with what you want, you give me what I want. You get a substantial increase in your stock and trade, in exchange you don't have to take any extra risks, or additional effort. You just need to tell me things you already would know.

It seems a fair deal to me."

Shin continued to regard Sagaki carefully. Though he was flattered that Sagaki thought that Shin knew every detail, it seemed his reputation had preceded him. Aside from a few theories the police had, Shin knew nothing. No names were dropped, no explicit details were released - nothing that could come in handy.

"So you want me to be the Brain to your Brendan?" Shin asked, raising an eyebrow. "If you can find information on your own, why involve me?"

He sighed, shoving the last of his fries in his mouth before reaching into his pocket for his pack of cigarettes and lighter. Thumb dragging down on the gear to get the flame going, he lit the cigarette and placed the end in his mouth.

"What are you looking for, anyway?" Shin asked, cancer stick bobbing up and down as he spoke.

"You know those are bad for you."

If he meant the comment to be in jest, it didn't show on his face. He spoke the words as serious as the rest of the conversation.

"I can't be everywhere, and there are things people might say to you that they don't to me. Just I need another pair of ears out there. You get me the information, I put it all together before more people die."

"So's school, but you don't see me quitting," Shin said monotonously, as if he had delivered the line many times before. Which, of course, he had to overly-concerned girls and nagging boys alike. Still, he inhaled and moved the cigarette away from his mouth as he exhaled.

With a sigh, Shin rubbed the back of his head and thoroughly mused the strands. It seemed rejecting Sagaki's proposal was going to lead nowhere, and the will to fight never took long to escape Shin.

"As long as I don't have to do anything other than that, I guess I'm in," Shin said, tapping the stick to get rid of the ashes. Watching them flutter to the ground for a moment, he looked up sharply at Sagaki. "What makes you think there's going to be more murders anyway?"

"Well I'd ask you not to discuss our working together. I won't ask you to keep anything else a secret, but I'd rather not have anyone harassing me while I work.

As far as more people dying, the standard motivations for murder are profit, revenge, jealous, to cover up a crim, to avoid embarrassment, and then your average homicidal maniac.

Someone benifeted from this murder, but there's no profit, Sato had no connections that would make killing him worth it, he didn't have enemies willing to kill, rumors so far have suggested that he may have been dating Aoi Misaki, which means that if jealousy was th emotive whoever curries Aoi's fancy now would be targeted.

The way his body was left suggests the murder wanted it found, which would attract attention if they were trying to hide something.

But placing the body to be found is sending a message. A serial killer is the kind of person who uses bodies to send a message, and they never stop at one."

he takes a breath and hopes down from the roofs edge, so that he and Shin are now standing on an equal level.

"Tell me what the police think about all of this?"

Nodding, Shin took a long drag from the cigarette. He almost wished it was night so he could see the embers burn more visibly, but for now he'd have to settle for watching the thing trails of smoke filter up. It wasn't like he was about to advertise that he was teaming up with the American transfer, so Sagaki really had nothing to worry about. Shin wouldn't even consider it teaming up - he was just doing what he usually did.

"There's no proof it's a serial killer," Shin said. "Police are assuming Sato was just an unfortunate victim. If it was a crime of passion, Aoi would have been contacted by the killer, and to my knowledge that hasn't happened."

Tapping the cigarette once again, he held it loosely between two fingers. "I think you're wasting your time with this investigation, to be honest. Aside from Sato's murder, there hasn't been any further evidence of foul play."

His face went grim.

"I Would be wasting my time if I sat back and allowed a murderer to go free."

He began pacing back and fourth for a moment.

"Murders don't hapen once unless that one person is the target. I know very little of Sato, but nothing I *do* know suggests that someone would have reason to want him dead."

Thomas shook his head after a moment. He crossed one arm over his midsection, to give the other arm a place ot rest. He bringing his hand up and and began stroking his chin.

"I must operate under the assumption that until the murder is caught there's a chance they might kill again."

He looked back to Shin and pointed a finger at him.

"I'm flying blind without a copy of the police report. Any suggestion on how I might acquire it?"

Shin stared at Sagaki for a long moment. Was this just how things were done in America, with teenagers inserting themselves into murder investigations? Or had Sagaki seen one too many crime shows and somehow figured that it seemed like a cool hobby to have? Teenagers nowadays were so troublesome, Shin thought as he once again took a drag from his cigarette.

"I'm not the son of a cop, Sagaki-san. My parents own a popular bar that I help at. I overhear things, and that's it. I'm not buddies with any of the customers; the extent of my relationship with them is them asking if I can do chores for them, and me telling them I'll find someone that's interested," he exhaled, smoking trailing out of his mouth in a rush. "Kawasa of first year has a father that's a cop, but if you want to avoid attention I wouldn't be asking her to steal you a copy of the report. Kawasa's a snitch, and if she doesn't report you to her dad you can be sure she's going to report you to the detective that's been snooping around here.

"If you want info, just keep your eyes and ears open. Don't seek out people and interrogate them on what they may or, more likely, may not know or you'll find yourself having a nice chat with the detective. And I can guarantee once that happens, you won't be able to move about as freely as you can now. You've got to be patient and wait for the right time if you want to be the hero and catch the guy."

He glared down at his cigarette, disappointed in himself for taking such long drags and finishing the cigarette quicker. Snuffing it into the ground next to him, he grabbed his bag from the burger joint and dropped his trash in it before picking up his milkshake again. Standing, he swayed for a moment as he regained his balance before looking over at Sagaki.

"I'll let you know if I hear anything," he said. "Just cool, alright? Otherwise you'll burn out before you even began."

He frowned slightly, and pulled a small notebook from his bag, ad began writing notes based on Shin's suggestions.

Once finished he flip the book closed and looked at the other boy.

"I don't need advice on how to do my job. I will attend to my methods."

He extended a small card toward Shin.

"Just keep me posted if you hear anything. You can send it to that e-mail address."

He moved over toward the door to the roof and looked back toward Shin.

"....You've been very helpful."

Yeah, Sagaki was definitely like Brendan. Never had Shin sympathized with a movie character more than now. Still, he took the offered card and put it in his pocket without reading the address on it. The fact that Sagaki had a business card didn't strike Shin as odd as him investigating the murder; weren't business cards common in the big cities?

Whatever it was, Shin shrugged and followed after Sagaki to the door. Lunch had to be almost up by now.

"I try," he said, giving a cheeky grin before moving past Sagaki to be the first in. He'd have to ditch the bag somewhere remote, so a teacher wouldn't see it and propose some new rule with a strict penalty against those that left the school.

It didn't matter that Shin didn't look at it, the card was mostly blank, just an e-mail address.

He let Shin slip past him and head inside. Once the other boy had stepped into the building Thomas let the door close by itself, not stepping through. He turned toward the edge of the building so that he might contemplate the information Shin had provided him.
