AND NOW FOR YOUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED TROLLING
WHO: Noboru, Kouki.
WHAT: A chance encounter.
WHEN: After school, post-Seikodungeon, whenever Kiriko is bitching out Toru.
WHERE: Bench on the school grounds.
WHY: Noboru really needs to start thinking these things through.

Contrary to popular belief, Noboru could function for things other than Bothering Toru. It was about a thousand times more boring, but it was possible.

He wasn't entirely sure if this counted, though, as Toru-free time.

He was seated at a bench on the school grounds, not quite willing to go back to his dorm yet and be fenced in by the walls and his piles of crap, with a black cat plush seated beside him and notebook open on his lap. Occasionally, he would get up to pace in front of the bench, notebook still in hand, clearly moving with a sort of nervous energy.

It had to be done, he thought, but that didn't make it any easier.

Sitting back down, his eyes strayed to the Gotou merchandise cat plush seated beside him, before he finally set pen to paper and began to hesitantly begin a letter.

Noboru jolted at Kouki's voice and touch, he'd been so absorbed in the act of letter-writing.

"Yoshida," he said, trying to push Kouki off of him by scooting down the bench and turning towards him. "Don't you have a tree to play in or people to push down the stairs or something?" His glare was strong, but would likely bounce off of Kouki much like everything did.

Noboru and Kouki's history was varied, including the aforementioned stair-pushing incident, and it had all ended in something weird happening to Noboru. So he didn't like to be around the little creep if he could help it, and especially right now, when he didn't want any company.

"No. I'm doing something important, not..." He made a vague hand-waving motion at Kouki like he was trying to make him disappear. "Don't bug me."

The letter, if Kouki were to look down and truly study it, was clearly addressed to Toru Ishinomori, and said something about "I need to be serious for a moment here - I don't mind you as much as I say I do. Actually..."

Kouki leaned harder into Noboru's shoulder, to get a better look at the letter. "Noooo, being here with you is what I have to do right now! It's fun."

The glare bounced off of him, as did any attempt to drive him away. Kouki merely started to read the letter. "Oh, this is for Ishinomori? And you need to be serious for a moment here? How unlike you, Takagi-han! Are you sending him a challenge? Or blackmail? Or a looooooooooooooooove letter?" He mimed a heart with his gesture, then put one hand on top of Noboru's head, presumably to ruffle his hair.

"You know what you need to do with those? Tie 'em to arrows! Then you could shoot them into Ishinomori's wall! That's proper dating technique, you know."

Noboru, seeing that his other cues didn't clue Kouki in, swatted lightly at both the hand on his head and Kouki's face. "Get lost! I'm not in the mood, Yoshida."

"Yes, it is -" he said before he could stop himself. "I'm not sending him a goddamn anything-you-need-to-know-about." His cheeks were suspiciously colored at Kouki's insistence that it was a love letter, if Kouki were to notice.

"Yeah, and I'll fire 'em from fucking horseback, too," he muttered, turning away from Kouki and back to his letter. "Though..." He looked back at Kouki. "If you were going to let someone know you were being serious about something, how would you go about doing it, Yoshida? If you even can be serious, anyway."

He dodged Noboru's hands and slipped in to sit next to Noboru on the bench. "You're never in the mood, Takagi-han!"

Kouki made an exaggerated pout. "And here I thought I could help you with your letter to Ishinomori! You won't even tell me what it's about... how mean!"

"...ah, that's..." Noboru's words made Kouki pause. His eyes narrowed, and he looked around the area. "I would..."

This was followed by an even longer pause. "I dunno. Being serious isn't too much of a concern, right? It's dumb. Serious things are dumb. I'd just climb up a 1,000-year-old cedar on top of a mountain and shout it. That's plenty fine, right, right?"

"Not when you're involved," Noboru grumbled as Kouki slid in next to him.

Noboru quirked an eyebrow at Kouki's understated reaction. No jumping on him, no ridiculous hand signs, no weird metaphors involving aliens from sea planets? The stuff about the cedar tree, he knew, was fairly tame for Kouki.

"But you have to be sometimes. Otherwise..." He looked down at his letter and sighed. "How are you ever going to really get close to someone?"

"Awww, you flatter me, Takagi-han." He refrained from leaning on or touching Noboru this time, and kept his hands in his lap. He barely even tried to lean over to look at Noboru's letter.

"...Maybe. I've never really had to worry about that, you know? But..." He fell silent, then gave a friendly little punch to Noboru's side. "Now you're making me think there would be a time like that! I don't wanna have to worry about so much stuff..."

The look in Kouki's eyes was as unreadable as usual, but had a strange, distant quality to it. "You aren't all that great at serious stuff, are you? What're you gonna do about this?"

...Okay. This was not Kouki. It was an impostor, definitely. Nothing in the world could affect Kouki enough to make him so...mellow.

Noboru regarded him cautiously as he spoke, and didn't even frown or push at Kouki when the underclassman punched him. Instead, he hit him back, gently still. "There always is that time, someday. ...Yeah, neither do I."

"What'll I do?" Noboru looked perplexed at this for a moment, then he looked down at his lap. Deftly, he took hold of the edge of the sheet of notebook paper and ripped it out, and once it was free from the notebook, he scrutinized it for a moment before taking it between both hands and ripping it to pieces. "Well, I'm not gonna face it like this."

He let the pieces fall where they may as he tore it up, some landing on the ground and others scattering around him on the bench or in his lap. That felt good. Symbolic. He would've just said, "Fuck it," and left them there if he wasn't paranoid about them being picked up and put back together by some nosy passerby.

He stooped down to pick them all up, shoving them to the bottom of his backpack for safekeeping until he could dispose of them somewhere that wasn't his and Toru's dorm room. As he did, he spoke to Kouki. "What about you? I took my step, what are you going to do, Yoshida? Burying your head in the sand only works for so long."

"Ya think?" Kouki leaned back in his seat, and put a hand to his chin, as if to stroke a nonexistent goatee. "Guess you might be right. And that... makes everything harder." A look of concern flickered in his eyes for a moment, before flitting away to parts unknown.

When Noboru tore out, and then up, the letter, his unwanted companion watched him do so. Neither surprise nor amusement showed in his face; rather, Kouki displayed a scrutinizing glance. "That certainly was a step. What're you gonna do now? Talk to Ishinomori?"

After the upperclassman had finished picking up the pieces of his now-shredded letter, Kouki stood and stretched. "I still need to figure that out, though. Because I've been living life as an ostrich. Living like that is easier, right? Maybe the next step is just figuring out what steps to take.... I guess."

"You can do it, jerk," Noboru said, falling easily into his big brother mode that he usually reserved for people he liked. Usually. "Don't say it's too hard before you've tried."

"...I guess I'll have to, right?" He sighed, and clenched his hands over his knees just slightly. "Talk about hard."

"Now you've got it!" He moved as if he were going to ruffle Kouki's hair, then made a face as he thought better of it. It was Yoshida. Tomorrow morning the freak would probably...smear peanut butter on Noboru's legs or something, and their relationship would be back to one-sided animosity, as it should be. "You'll figure it out. You're friends with Okinawa-kun, right? (Whether Kouki would grasp this as Noboru's nickname for Kai, Noboru never thought.) So you've at least got one guy to help."

He stood up, picking up his things and shoving them in his bag with the abandoned letter. "I'll see you around, Yoshida," was all he said before walking away.
