For the time being, Norio had decided to sit with his own class. 2-B did have a pretty good view of the stage, and a good view would mean good reporting for the promotionals. An over-hyped description of an on-stage performance was perfect to sell to the fangirls and boys.

But until the performance started, he'd just have to wait. As it was, he sat next to Kou, and noticed him out of the corner of one sly eye.

"Hmm, Oubai-kun... Shirking your duty? I know you make a fuss of not liking things like this... but it is an officially sanctioned school event, paid for with school money. I think it'd only be fair to give the performers a little more time and effort, huh?"

There had been times Kouchisei had bristled at the sudden and oft-rude approaches people made. He liked them to come from ahead, and having them in view always meant he knew where he stood and that he could escape.

Sitting down next to that made it harder - he hadn't factored in how Norio could be exceedingly stupid.

"I am here. I am waiting. What is the problem?"

Norio smiled, and the air around him seemed to drop twenty degrees.

"Looks like you were going for your books. You think this is really the time to study, huh? If you really wanted to show the spirit of a Nanakamado student, you'd be a little more interested in the actual competition, don't you think?"

This set him to fingering the edge of his notebook, the starting place of upcoming promotionals, and the top of a pile of preview magazines that he intended to pass out. The ones with him were the leftovers.

"But, then again, who am I to judge? What you do with your honor is your own business."

"It would be hard in the dark," said Kou.

He saw movement in the corner of his right eye, and caught Norio fretting over his notebook. "All these people are fighting for is a bit of coloured ribbon. I see you observe honour from a distance, since you seem to misunderstand it. I don't mind."

He focused his attention on the backs of heads in front of him, and then over them at the stage. He clearly didn't feel threatened.

Noriko's cold smile softened into an amused grin. "Suit yourself."

Hands came off the notebook, and he leaned back in his chair. "Is it hard, trying to live seven decades in the past? Your idea of culture is laughably outdated, and useless, barring that you get yourself a time machine. Competitions like this... they're the heart and soul of today's Japan. You should get used to that."

Now he was focused on Kouchisei. This was far more interesting than waiting for the idols.

What Norio had earned was to be ignored. What Kouchisei saw this idol contest as was the narrowing of the mind and the spirit. The idea this culture, with its technology and progress, multilated the old traditions was an abhorrent one, and people were happy to let it go on. He refused to let any of it blow him off his feet.

All it was, in the end, was enslavement to another nation's culture.

Idiots.
