Who: Kozue, Maeko
What: Diascussion
Where: On the beach.
When: After the Toshidungeon.
Why: We said we would, really, we did.

She had said they should do this, and it had been weighing in the back of her mind like a ton of bricks through the entire vacation at the beach. Sometimes forgotten, but briefly; she worried about the conversation less and the topic of the conversation more, sometimes to the point that she was surprised she could forget it, ever, period. Even large pints of ice cream did not help; although since the breakup with Kou she had been indulging herself in them with greater frequency, and getting away with it because people thought (or would think, she told herself) that she was a woman scorned and thus ice cream was the most natural recourse.

Now, before they left the beach and the ability to have unpleasant discussions on lounge chairs on the sand, they had to do it. She'd let Maeko know, where she'd be and when, and now she was waiting. With a popsicle, because ice cream comforted all.

Maeko had been making a effort to avoid Kanaye since last night. It wasn't particularly difficult, he was holed up in her room so all she really needed to do was not visit him, but she felt guilty about it. She should not, she was quite certain, be avoiding her boyfriend. No matter how creepy he was.

She was glad when she got Kozue's text. She could busy herself with all manner of activities (more paper frogs in this case) and still feel guilty but when she was expected elsewhere that was different. She had a reason not to be spending her time (and she was only wasting it anyway) with someone who was injured and who needed her and who never shut up about needing her. A good reason, too, since she had more now than ever to discuss with her fellow completely useless teammate.

She approached Kozue, glad to be by the waves and gladder to be by the waves with a good excuse to be there.

"Morning- it's still morning, right?" She said, seating herself on the chair next to Kozue's.

"Morning," she replied, followed by a shrug. "Let's just pretend it is? I left my phone off the beach and I don't have a watch." She spun her topsicle in her fingers, and smiled--mostly because smiling was a thing that she was supposed to do, a social more she had learned so thoroughly. It was unpleasantly Toshi-esque, now that she thought about it, which...

She took a breath. That brought her back to the topic. She could talk around it for a few more minutes and exchange pleasantries but sometimes it was better to just bludgeon her way in. It would make the unpleasantness of anticipation a bit less? Right? "So. Dia."

"Dia. Right." Maeko hadn't really had any idea what to small talk ABOUT but it was still somewhat uncomfortable to dive into the topic so directly. There wasn't much she could say that Kozue didn't clearly already know due to being there the whole time.

She drew her knees up to her chest and leaned her chin on them instead of sidding properly in the chair, leaving her replacement cheap flipflops in the sand because they weren't particularly comfortable. And the conversation topic wasn't particularly comforable. At least she had some form of control over the flipflops. When they weren't running away into the ocean. Yeah. She had power over flipflops. She was like the god of deciding whether or not she wore flipflops.

"It's...there doesn't seem to be any harm left from using it, at least. Not that we can see, anyway. When it works."

"D'you want a topsicle?"

It seemed the right response for discomfort; on further speculation, Kozue realized that offering topsicles really just made her seem like someone who turned to food for comfort (read: someone fat) and that was no good, so she didn't press the issue at all. She stretched, instead, and took another lick from her own ice cream.

"But Paradise can make it not work sometimes. I mean, since Paradise makes it work in the first place, I guess that... I don't really know if it makes sense. Do you think it does?"

Maeko shook her head. She'd gone off topsicles ever since thier mascot set her on fire.

"Yeah. Ito's shadow could just say he didn't want anyone using it. And Senpai this time..." She looked briefly very uncomforable, guilty about not caring about hr boyfriend when her was bedridden and sick and she really was horrible. It passed quickly, though, replaced by the fake smiles that seemed to be passing through the group like the flu might. She had caught smiling. She was very sick with smiling.

And she was almost sure she might die of it one of these days.

"I think it makes sense. That it's paradise itself deciding it? It can't be totally up to the shadow because if it was why would they allow it in the first place..."

The smiles were no less creepy now; in fact, they were getting creepier as they showed up on more and more faces. They were everywhere. Even Kozue had been guilty of the same thing mere moments before. She took another lick of topsicle which in other circumstances might have been vaguely suggestive, but right now was really just focused on yummy and look a distraction!

"That's, yeah, if it was totally up to a Shadow I bet they wouldn't let us do anything. But they do kind of... control part of Paradise, don't they? Like all the stupid games. Weird rules. Costumes." People were weird. People's subconscious minds were very, very weird.

"Maybe..." She shrugged. "Maybe they just sort of ask paradise for stuff? Like the rules and the costumes and the bir- and- And Paradise plays along when it wants to? And then maybe we do the same when we call those things." She leaned her chin on her knees, staring at the waves as they rolled in. "I dunno."
