In which boys are discussed and Seiko learns a new word.
Who: Maeko, Seiko
What: Ice Cream!
Where: Kigakiga
When: Evenning
Why: Ice Cream!

Maeko approahed Seiko, still in her work t-shirt (though thankfully not in the large strawberry suit) and placed a bowl of peach sorbet in front of her.

"You like this kind, right? I forgot to ask what you wanted but I thought this type suited you."

She smiled, sitting opposite her friend with her own strawberry icecream.

Seiko grinned, a fan of anything sweet really, but peaches were a favorite.

"Good choice Maeko-chan!" She replied with a smile picking up her spoon, she was a little curious as to why her friend had asked her out for ice cream, the Maeko had said she had something she wanted to talk about, but Seiko had no idea what that could be. And she had a few things of her own she wanted to ask Maeko, but those could wait.

"So what's up Maeko-chan?" She asked taking a spoonful of sorbet.

Maeko waited until the first mouthful of strawberry icecream was gone to talk.

"Sorry, I know he's your fried but...has Satou-senpai seemed weird at all to you lately? Moreso than usual?"

Seiko frowned eating some sorbet before replying.

"Well he was fairly quiet at the beach, and what with him leaving the dorms..." She tapped her chin with her spoon.

"But he is getting trained up isn't he? To take over the company, so I guess there will be a lot of stress on him." Seiko tilted her head and looked her friend in the face.

"Are you worried that... he might end up there? If he gets worse?"

Maeko stabbed at her icecream with the spoon uncomfortably.

"He..." Stab stab stab. It was hard to word this without referring to how she used to be and that wasn't something she was particularly happy to discuss. "He said he was okay with dying. And then he got really scary. And then we had an arguement and I said something bad and now he's being all evasive. I don't know if he's going to end up over there but..." She trailed off, finishing the sentence by taking a spoonful of very stabbed icecream.

Seiko watched her friend with concern eating her sorbet slowly to give her time to think.

"Well, what do you mean by 'scary'? And about the thing about dying..." She tailed off, too many of her teammates seemed far too content to die, she understood the desire to protect the team, and if she had to she might take that step too. But to announce it so openly in front of your girlfriend... She sighed, Maeko didn't need further worry, but Kanaye was not one to necessarily think like that. He wasn't known for his tact.

"That place gets to people, and makes them say things they don't really mean deep down."

Maeko paused. It was difficult to express just how (and just how much Kanaye scared her sometimes. It was normal, she supposed, for him to want to be told he was loved. It certainly didn't seem unreasonable in her head. It was the fact that he was so desperate about it that scared her. And the fact that they couldn't even discuss it because she was incapable of expressing it right and he went all pathetic the second he was challenged.

"I guess it kind of sounds silly but..." She sighed. "He's...he must think I'm going to run off the second he turns his back. Maybe I've given him a good reson to think that, I don't even know. But he's always wanting to be told I love him and I'm not going to go and that seems pretty normal I guess but it's about every twenty seconds. And he's touching me all the time and maybe that's normal too but...I don't know. It feels like there's something weird about it. Like he's trying to make sure I'm there or claim ownership or something."

She resumed playing with her food. "Maybe it is stress or, i don't know, weird influence from that place. But I'm not really...that's not normal, is it?"

"Ah well, he has been clingy about his and my friendship too. I think he is pretty terrified of anyone leaving him." Seiko said thoughtfully, thinking back to the time she'd had to slap him to calm him down.

"It sounds a little too much to be normal, and...besides wanting to be told you are loved like that... Its a bit..." Seiko waved her free hand, trying to draw her thoughts together. "Forced, like he needs to hear it, and like he hopes it will make you believe it even more?"

She ate some more sorbet thoughtfully. "It isn't normal, Maeko-chan is it really worrying you? Like, badly?"

"Oh. I guess at least it's not specifically because I've made him worried I'll leave, then." Her icecream was slowly being reduced to much by continuous spoonstabbing.

"That's...yeah." Maeko couldn't really think of anything else to add, Seiko had kind of managed to express her concerns properly using those stupid word things that seemed to escape her all the time.

"It shouldn't be worrying me this much but it is. I..." She sighed. "...Sorry, it's not really fair to make you go through it when you weren't even with us back then but is it okay if I tell you about my..place over there? It's sort of why I'm worried."

"I don't know with him, his emotions seem to change a lot, so do his reasons for things." Seiko replied, eating her sorbet slowly.

"Tell me whatever you like Maeko-chan, we're friends, I'll listen to whatever you need me to." She smiled gently, very quietly proud that Maeko wanted to open up to her, share things with her. She felt happy to be trusted, but also concerned, seeing Maeko worried. But at least it would mean she could help her.

"My...she was a witch. I guess that's not much of a surprise. A mute witch with pet birds." She lifted some ice cream up on her spoon and dropped it back into the bowl. "And being needed like that, I guess, having someone so dependant on her that they couldn't function at all without her. It was the only thing she really wanted. She didn't even care about stopping the group from taking me back, just about making sure they didn't hurt her pets. And it was Aoi-san I had in that situation and because of that we had all those fights afterward...I'm not sure people are really capable of being needed that much."

She figgetted uncomfortably. Half this stuff she hadn't even been honest with herself about, let alone someone else. "I want to stop being like that but every time I see Aoi-san scared or hurt or in anything that might be danger I have to be there. And with Satou-senpai...I kind of want to be needed that much, even though I know it's unhealthy and I'll just wear myself out or maybe even end up back there again." She sighed and then gave a humourless laugh. "Stupid, right?"

"Its not stupid all all Maeko-chan." Seiko said gently putting her spoon down so she could rest her chin on her hands.

"A lot of people want to be needed, not to the degree your shadow showed maybe, but I imagine that... It is maybe not the best thing with Kanaye-kun." She said carefully, and wondering where exactly she fitted into Maeko's desire to be needed.

"You do have friends who you don't have that kind of relationship with, so thats progress from that place isn't it?" Seiko added reassuringly with a small sympathetic smile.

"Its different this time, because you are obviously aware of what is going on with you and Kanaye-kun, you know now what it could end up like."

"I guess it's no that weird to want people to need you. And I am getting a little better, I think. I know it's a problem at least. But..." She sighed. "I know it's a problem but I'm so unwilling to fix it. And when I do try to bring it up I screw up all the words and end up saying something completely different and then he gets all upset because I can't say things right."

She ate another spoonful of half-melted mush that was once icecream before being brutally murdered.

"I just don't know what to do. Sorry to throw all my problems at you."

"Accepting your problems is a very big step." Seiko nodded, ironically, as her own problems were something she refused to even contemplate.

"I think...Kanaye-kun is the type to get upset over things even when they are said right. Maybe you aren't always saying things wrong, its hard Maeko-chan, to be able to say what you really feel to someone you care about."

She continued to eat her sorbet slowly, despite it melting, after all it was too delicious to eat fast, and talking to Maeko was more important than her sorbet melting.

"Its alright, you are my friend, you can talk to me about whatever you need to." Seiko smiled again, she was glad Maeko trusted her enough to open up to her. She felt reasonably sure she wouldn't talk to Aoi or even Kanaye like this.

After a few more spoonfuls of multed icecream, Maeko nodded. "Maybe. But I should probably try again. I don't want to upset him but I think it is kind of important. It's so stupid, before when we'd just broken up we could have talked about this no problem but once we're together again we can't. I don't want to have to break up again just to be able to have a conversation."

She tapped her spoon against the side of the bowl in thought. Boyfriends were complicated. She had no clue how Kozue managed so many.

"Thank you anyway, though. It really helps to be able to say this." And that was an important thing too. Saying things was so completely against her nature she'd have never even thought to try it had Seiko not been around to listen. "Let me know if you ever need anything, too, okay?"

"You'll get there Maeko-chan, if this is important to you, you will manage to get it right." Seiko encouraged. "I suppose relationships can be like that, because when you are with someone, things become a lot more...intense, I think?"

She finished her sorbet with a sigh, she really did have to come here more often, she was sure there were other people she could persuade to come out for ice cream.

"I'm always here for you Maeko-chan, whenever you need me." She paused at Maeko's offer of help. As there was something that had been on her mind for a while, something she couldn't work out. She wasn't used to having feelings that were hard to understand, but maybe this was something Maeko would understand, Maeko was in a relationship after all, even if it was dysfunctional.

"Well there is something..." She paused again, looking unusually shy looking down to focus on her bowl.

"Maeko-chan...how do you know...when you...like someone?" She asked slowly, she was aware she probably should know, but whilst she had had a fair few 'partners' in the past, there had never been an emotional connection, her feelings for them had never been anything beyond their physical relationship. So, now, she needed an opinion of someone with more experience of the emotions, fully aware that her asking Maeko for 'love' advice, was a very odd situation.

And suddenly Maeko was out of her depth. Well, more so than usual.

"I- um-" How on earth was she supposed to know that? It took a fair bit of internal (and external) flailing before she remembered the 'oh right, boyfreind' thing. "You know because it gets really weird and dumb."

Maeko was explaining what something was like by insulting it a lot. Naturally. "You want to be around them even when they're stupid and you wouldn't really mind even if they didn't stop being stupid and you get all mad and it's dumb if they're with someone else. Kinda."

Seiko, instead of scoffing, or just waving Maeko's advice aside, contemplated what Maeko said seriously. Well, it had been a bit weird she decided, and she was fairly sure she herself had been a little dumb. But then again that might not be because of her feelings, she frowned.

"Well, I guess...He can be pretty stupid." She said finally. "But um, it doesn't really sound stupid at the time." She waved her hand as she tried to think. "Its like, I feel awkward and stupid when I spend time with him, or like... At times when usually I wouldn't feel stupid."

Seiko began to realise she may be picking up her friend's verbal habits. "I don't know, I mean, I think I like him but, I just-" she shifted in her seat.

"I um, haven't really liked anyone before exactly." She admitted, suddenly staring at her bowl with more enthusiasm than any bowl ever deserved.

Maeko was almost comforted by the introduction of a word that was very special to her to Seiko's vocabulary. If nothing else it made her feel less like this was a topic she really had no place discussing.

"I think that's it. The whole thing and everyone involved is just really dumb. But it's good dumb, kind of."

"Well, if you think you like him and you havn't liked anyone before then I guess you could work it out by have you felt stupid like that before? If you have then it's probably something else. But if it's some sort of new dumb it's probably something that didn't happen before." Maeko was, once again, completely useless at giving advice. Maybe it was her who needed the subtitles.

Seiko nodded thoughtfully, almost surprised at how much Maeko was actually making sense, admittedly it took a moment to translate it into something slightly more understandable, but Seiko herself felt comforted by Maeko's method of expressing it. It was familiar, and didn't include any difficult or soppy terms she wasn't sure she could take seriously.

"A good kind of dumb..." She mused, "I don't think I have felt this kind of stupid before." She said decisively tugging on her hair. "I mean, I'd recognize it, if it was the same right?" She managed to look at Maeko for a moment, long enough to give a small smile.

"Its just, what with everything around that place, I wonder if... If I should do anything about these uh 'dumb' feelings." She kept the conversation close to Maekoese, it made it easier to explain to her friend.

"I think you'd recognize it. It's a pretty distinct kind of stupid." She said, nodding. She ate the last of her badly abused icecream and made several grand arm gestures that didn't clarify anything at all, even in sign.

"That place? Is it one of us or someone from outside?" She asked, finally saying a sentence devoid of 'stupid'. "I guess that might change things."

Seiko nodded, toying with her spoon and trying to work out exactly what kind of 'stupid' it was she was feeling. Then she took good few moments trying to understand why Maeko was waving her arms around.

Then she realized her fatal flaw in mentioning Paradise, as in it would make it a lot easier for Maeko to narrow down who it was if she knew it was one of the group.

"Nnnnnooooo not one of the group." Seiko said a little too quickly, revealing her truly awful lying face, Seiko never really had been one who could lie directly, especially about something personal. "You most certainly and definitely absolutely would not know him." She added, clearly thinking she was being pretty sneaky.

Maeko, however, was pretty used to taking things at face value. She was only thinking Kanaye was lying about being okay because he'd said things that contradicted themselves. Besides, she was fairly sure that if Seiko was lying she would know about it.

"Not one of us, huh? And they're probably not from school if I don't know them...Is it someone from before? You're not going to turn bad on us again, are you?" She teased.

Seiko blinked in amazement, she had thought she was fairly bad at lying, but apparently, she was secretly some kind of ace. But then suddenly she felt guilty about lying to her friend who had been so honest with her and shared her deepest feelings.

"Oh um, no er, he is at the school." She raised an eyebrow, someone from before? She couldn't even remember most of their names, let alone hold any feelings for them.

"I will uhh, try my utmost to stay good."

"Uh well, no none of them." She said shaking her head. "I don't know any people like that anyway." She said shaking her head, deciding to go back to honesty.

"It'd take a whole lot of effort not to like you." She said, smiling. "I don't he'd be able to manage it. Besides, I'm pretty sure if you can keep up a conversation with the likes of Sagaki then talking to just about anyone else shouldn't be a problem even if it's about that, social or understanding relationships or not. Seiko was touched by Maeko's compliment, and smiled momentarily, glad she had a friend who was so kind. But the smile dropped as Maeko continued. And she shifted uncomfortably in her chair.

"Uh yeah, good thing I like no one in the team then." She said in a very slightly strained voice. "But, I don't think being able to talk to people, is the same as people wanting to be with me." She shrugged.

"I don't know, its all sort of stupid."

"Well I imagine being able to talk to people must really help." Maeko said unhelpfully, not really being an expert in being able to talk to people. "And yeah, our team are all sort of difficult. It's probably a good job if you're keeping away from them."

"Most things are at least one sort of stupid. This is just three, four lots of stupid at once all ganging up on you. You just have to beat them up one at a time." She smacked her palm against her fist, making it difficult to tell if this was a strange metaphor or a genuine suggestion to punch stupid things.

Seiko fiddled with her spoon, her sorbet long since finished, wondering if her friend was in fact, lying herself to hide the fact she had seen through Seiko's own lie and was trying to protect Seiko's feelings by constantly saying it wasn't someone in the group. That, or Seiko was some kind of lying expert and she had never realised.

"Wait, so...You want me to punch him?" She asked her eyes wide, she didn't want to punch anyone, besides shadows, and seeing as she didn't think she 'liked' a shadow, it didn't make much sense. Unless Maeko really did have an odd idea of who she liked.

"Punch the stupid, with thinking?" Seiko wondered at what point her friend had stopped making any sense at all, and why. But at least she wasn't trying to guess who it was.

Seiko looked at their empty bowls and sighed. "Do you want some more Maeko-chan?" She asked, wondering if maybe a break in the conversation may get them off this very strange tangent, plus she wanted more sorbet.

"Yeah but, even if he was flattered, still mega awkward... Like, he'd know I like him, but..." she paused, Maeko would be pleased if she confessed to her? If Maeko was a guy? Seiko tried not to read too deeply into that one because it led her mind to strange and unwanted speculation.
