Who: Maeko, Kanaye
What: Using boyfriend as babelfish.
Where: Kanaye's room
When: Evenning. Pre OMG, S!TOSHI
Why: For threading?

Maeko's attempt at reading through the thick, heavy, stupid english book had been going unnaturaqlly well thoughout the time here. Something about being so close to the sea made her more motivated, she was reading through it because she wanted to rather than because she felt obliged to and it was making all the difference in the world.

But enthuseasm wasn't all too helpful when the book was stupid and english and old and she had reached a sentence that she couldn't understand no matter how hard she tried.

She trusted Tom better to translate accurately and she sort of wanted to go visit Max but she really did ought to be spending time with Kanaye and he would probably know.

"Senpai? You in?" She asked, knocking on the door.

Kanaye was staring at the wall, twitching slightly. The laughing had stopped, but in it's place...Well, it was better, at least. Just some chuckling and a feeling of being patted on the back. But...It's still weird. And it didn't sound like Indra. What the heck was going on?

Oh, hey, girlfriend! In his room! Alone! Kanaye shook his head and nodded. "Yeah!" he said, excited. "What do you need me for?" He asked, grinning and walking over to his door.

Maeko poked her head through the door, smiling. "I just wanted to see you, silly!"

She paused and then entered the room properly. "Well, actually I lied. I'm kind of stuck with a sentence in this again. But I wanted to see you anyway!"

...Oh. Well, at least she wanted to see him! That's good...right! Kanaye laughed and shrugged. He was wearing an undershirt and boxers, both of which were orange. He looked like he hadn't slept for days. "Well, I'm sure I can help! What do you need?" he asked as he walked over to the bed and sat down, patting a space beside him.

The room looked weird, especially for Kanaye. It looked like no one had lived in there for days. The only difference between it and an unlived in room is that the bed wasn't made. And the person sitting it in. Kanaye smiled. "What sentence do you need to figure out?"

Maeko had seen Kanaye's room at his home soon after she'd returned from the witch's house. It hadn't been nearly this tidy. At that point it hadn't really been in a state where she felt entirely safe enterring. The order and tidiness of it shouldn't have felt so unnatural to her but the contrast made it more unnerving.

As well. Maybe it was just conincience. Her boyfriend's state was something that concerned her more. She was well aware what 'not sleeping for days' looked like. Was he homesick? Probably not, he'd seemed fine after moving to the dorms. She could ask after, she supposed. For now she seated herself next to him, leaning against him a little and openning the book.

"This one doesn't have a witch in it. I ran out of stories with a witch in them." She said, not sure if that made it better or worse. "That sentence."

She pointed to a sentence that had been marked out in pink highlighter. 'Then the father fell into the most furious anger, sprang up, called his people thither'. There was a post-it note stuck next to it with a clumsy attempt at translation. 'Angry father jumped and (called people names)???'.

"I get most of the sentence but I have no clue what a thither is." She said, pouting at the book. "I think from context it's some sort of insult but I don't get why he started calling people names out of nowhere, either."

Kanaye hugged Maeko and didn't let go, kissing her on the cheek before looking at the book. "Tita?" He attempted to pronounce it. He furrowed his brow and tried to think. Tither...tither...titha? He didn't know how to pronounce it, but... "He's calling people...over here? Somewhere else? He's asking people to go somewhere, I think..."

He hugged her. "I love how you're trying to figure this out. It's really quite impressive. You're amazing, Maeko. Not like me..." Kanaye shook his head and smiled, but his heart wasn't quite into it. "Oh well! How's the trip been to you?"

Maeko was happy enough to be attached to her boyfriend, attempting to return the hug without the book sliding off her lap and failing. She returned the hug with one arm and held the book in place with the other.

"I think it's 'zii...zaa'. She said, struggling with the unfamiliar sounds. She resumed pulling faces at the book. "Calling people over? That's a dumb way of saying that. But that makes a lot more sense." She let the look slide from her lap to the ground, reattempting the 'hug with both arms' thing. "What a stupid language."

She let go after a while, leaning on Kanaye again instead. She wasn't sure how to respond to that, whether she should thank him for the compliment or take the obvious hook to say 'don't say that, you're amazing'.

"It's been great!" She said, deciding to solve the problem by skipping the whole thing. "I've never been so close to the sea before, it's nice."

"Yeah, how the heck does my mom pronounce it?" He asked, grinning and shaking his head. "Oh well. We don't need it, right?" He asked, kissing her on the lips. "I love you, Maeko."

"I'm glad you're liking it." He smiled, more genuinly this time. "Do you need anything? Can I do anything for you?"

Maeko only returned the kiss quickly then pulled away, he didn't look too well and if it was a cold or something she didn't want to catch it, smiling. "Love you too."

She shook her head. "I'm fine. But." And suddenly, serious face. "Are you okay? You don't look too well."

Oh. She noticed. Kanaye nodded smiling. "Of course I am. I'm perfectly ok. I couldn't be better. I mean, no problems at all. Not at all." Even to himself, it sounded unbelievable and completely pointless. Kanaye looked worried, and sighed. "I can't lie to you, Maeko..."

"It's just. Mom came. You know that, right? Well. She had some news. When I get back, I'm supposed to move out of the dorms and back into my house. And dad's starting up that stupid training again..." He sighed. "Why can't they just leave me alone? Why..." He shook his head. "...But. That doesn't matter right now. You're here. And that's all I need." He kissed her again and held her close. "Thank you, Maeko..."

Maeko wasn't sure whether to object to the obvious lies. She didn't particularly like the idea of inquiring further if Kanaye didn't want to discuss it, no matter how much she wanted to know. Fortunately, Kanaye called himself out on his own stupid obvious lie and saved her the trouble.

"Oh..." Maeko had to remind herself that this was a bad and unreasonable thing rather than something that should be accepted. "That's not good. Is there any reason for it?"

The words 'all I need' gave her mixed feelings. On the one hand, it was what she wanted. To be able to be so reliable that someone could rely on her so much. On the other, and that same presence that had calmed her so in the ocean stirred uncomfortably, being entirely responsible for someone's happiness was terrifying. Too much responsibility. Too much could go wrong and it would be her fault.

"I'm glad I can help!" She said, the first part of her silencing the second part and saying it was dumb as it always did but taking longer than ever.

"My 18th birthday. It's in a month. And dad wants me to take over the company." He sighed. "It's just. Not fair. I don't want to take over his stupid company. It could go rot in hell for all I care. Him too. Would certainly save me some trouble."

He sighed to himself and smiled. "Thank you, Maeko. It really means a lot to me..."

It was all he knew. He knew he loved her. She...well. He thought she loved him. More then he could say about anyone else. She was all he needed. He needed her. He needed someone to love him, and he has it. He won't let her not love him. He won't let anyone take her away from him.

In hell? Maeko couldn't really keep herself from paling at even the idea of thinking something like that, let alone saying it. And not just because hell had been unpleasant. It was disrespectful. It was improper. And if Kanaye wasn't so pathetic right now that it would have felt like kicking a puppy she might even have expressed this.

She forced her smile back and squeezed Kanaye's hand. "Already? Sorry, I forgot about that. But...I'm here and-." A pause while she reminded herself once again than this was bad. "It'll all work out somehow. I'm sure it'll be okay."

"Thank you, Maeko...I know you're here...I love you. Please...don't leave..." he said, kissing her on the lips as he held her close. "I make you happy, right? I don't hurt you...right? You love me, right?" He asked, somewhat pathetically. He wanted confirmation. He wanted someone to let him know that they love him, and that he makes them happy.

"I don't know what to do. I can't inherit that stupid company...I'm too stupid to. And I can't do anything else...But I don't want to inherit it...Maeko, what should I do? I can't...It's not fair, dammit. I don't want to..."

Maeko didn't know what to say for a second. This was...probably not normal. "Of course I love you." She said after a few seonds, feeling bad for hesitating. She wanted to confirm that he didn't hurt her. It would have been true enough, he'd been gentle and helpful and kind and had not once tried to yell until yelled back at, if she could just shake this distict feeling that she was somehow being strangled. "And you don't hurt me at all but you're being kind of scary."

"I don't really know. It's not really a situation I've ever been in." She said, shaking her head. "Have you tried just saying you don't want to do it?"

Kanaye looked at her, eyes wide. "What? I'm being scary? Maeko, I am so sorry, I didn't mean to be, why am I scary? I'll change! I can change! I'm sorry, it won't happen again, I'm sorry, please don't leave..." he said rapidly. He let go of her and looked away. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to..."

"Yes. He won't listen."

"Kind of, yes!" Maeko said, the scary thing further confirmed. She waited until he let go and calmed down, making no move to resume contact.

"It's okay but..." She sighed. "It's not like I'm going to run off or anything." She couldn't think of a nice way to add 'unless you keep freaking out at me' to that sentence and so chose not to. "You don't need to get so worked up."

"Just don't do it again, okay?" Maeko said, sighing.

"I only really needed to know what the word meant but..." She was almost sure she would regret asking this. But doing things she would regret later was sort of what she did. "Have you been getting enough sleep? Or any sleep at all?"

"...oh, someone was laughing? I didn't hear anyone outside." She tried to think of who would laugh so loud. Reizo was the only person who initially came to mind and the room he was in was a long way from here. All signd pointed to her boyfriend being batshit crazy.

"I don't know. I guess I'm not funny?" She suggested uselessly.

"It's... oh." Maeko wasn't sure what to say to that. The noise she attributed to the witch was nothing new to her, at least. "But it stopped, right! That's good! You mean like now? now or just before I entered now?"

"Night. Love you!" Maeko said softly, picking up her book and leaving. Maybe a little too quickly.

She at least took care to close the door silently behind her.
