Who: Kou and Shiori
What: ~*~Studying~*~
Where: School library
When: Saturday after school
Why: Reviewing + tutoring <3

To be honest, Shiori was nervous. Oubai-san always seemed so distant and formal and like he was on a totally different level than Shiori; she didn't really talk to her classmates (or used to, anyway), but Oubai especially seemed unapproachable. It was why Shiori was so surprised when he asked if she wanted help with school - which of course she accepted, because help was help - but the fact that maybe he was nicer than he seemed still didn't deter the apprehension she was feeling now. Would he be quiet, like he had been that day in the cafeteria, and would they spend the whole time doing nothing but studying? Or would they maybe get off-track, joke around a little or at least talk about what had happened while he was gone?

In any case, Shiori felt like her heart was about to pound out of her chest. She felt stupid, sitting at an empty table with just her books to give her company. But she felt even stupider because she was so nervous. Really, it was just Oubai-san. Just a guy from her class. He couldn't be that scary, could he?

Once again moving her books around, Shiori withdrew her math one with slight reluctance. Math was usually her favorite time to draw just because the subject was so boring. Sulking a little, she brought back her two notebooks she had opened for Oubai-san and put her history one back on the pile.

"I feel sorry for the kids there then," Shiori said, perking up at the fun fact. "How'd you learn that, Oubai-san?"

Flipping her other notebook - her math one, incidentally - to the last section they had worked on, Shiori sighed and did the same to the actual book. She'd do her best to pay attention, but already she could tell it was going to be hard. Still, for Oubai-san's sake she'd do her best.

"Hmn. I think I found it curious."

Not talking about why - his father, truly - because it involved his personal life being made public, Kou opened his own textbook. He hadn't known what Shiori needed to learn and had brought an assortment. Reminding himself to get her number, or at least an e-mail, he looked at her over the increasing pile of textbooks.

"... As it is, if you fail maths you lose your chance of going to a good university. Some that teach art, even. I'm assuming you know you use maths everyday, including your drawings?"

For a moment, Shiori's heart stopped. She hadn't realized math had been that important - or important enough that it could risk her chances of getting into an art school, anyway. She had always assumed that the most she would have to do with math was with mixing and that; did she really need to know all of the other things? Would it really jeopardize her future - her chances of getting out of Iburi?

"I didn't," Shiori said quietly, staring down at her open text book. She really wanted to get out of Iburi, and if it meant cracking down on studying now to ensure she would get out then it seemed like a sacrifice worth making. Looking up at Oubai, she asked, "Will you help me then? I mean, can we meet up again?"

He, at least, would probably be more patient than a teacher would. And would probably be able to teach it to her easier too.

Sorry for the late reply. Was tired but feel better now. :)

Kou nodded. He looked at the library, at book-filled shelves and student-occupied tables, and wondered how to explain how important mathematics was. Shiori was a nice girl, perhaps a little dim, but nice. She was clever in her own way. She'd understand maths. It was in the world around them, he thought - and that gave him an idea.

He pointed at the shelves on their right. "Somebody designed that to exact measurements," he said, and then pointed at the books. "Numbers of pages." Lighting. "How long the bulb lasts."

He looked at Shiori then. "Your shades of pencils. Graded. If you need help... I suppose I have the time."

Good. :D

Turning to look at the things he pointed, Shiori let his words process in her brain for a moment. If everything had to be measured, then it really was something she had to know.

"So I do use it in art," Shiori said in wonder. "But I don't know how I'd connect the thickness of ink into the pie-goreum theory or anything."

It all seemed so hopeless. Couldn't the people who were good at math do math, and the people who were good at other things do those? Slumping back in her chair, Shiori sighed. Maybe it'd best if she asked a teacher for help or something. At least they had the benefit of getting paid for helping students out - poor Oubai wasn't getting anything, as far as she knew. Even if he was getting extra credit, it couldn't be enough to vindicate helping Shiori.

"Hmn. You need to get into a good university. Entrance exams..." He paused; his father was already talking about entering Tokyu U, to study something he didn't have the energy for. It wasn't like he could even think about anything else... He supposed it was a good place to study medicine... business...

With a sigh he leaned back and looked away.

"Let's get started."

Aight! :D

Resisting the urge to groan, Shiori nodded and reached forward to get her book. It couldn't hurt to score really high on the entrance exams, even if it was for an art school. Even though her portfolio would probably be the thing that got her in, getting a good score would ensure she'd get in. And if she could get in, she could get away from Iburi.

"Yessir!" she said, picking up her pencil.
