OKAY, RAILROADING DONE
Who: All persona users except Maeko and Misaki
What: Railroading!
Where: A ROOM
When: After the false start on the dungeon.
Why: I like to type butterfly because it lets me type butt.

When the light faded, the cage and angels had gone. The room the group would find themselves in now was small. It looked too small to fit the whole group but it did and comfortably. If any of the group were to move the distance they moved away and the distance between them and the room’s walls would not match up unless they were trying to approach either of the two doors. Paintings of places hung from the walls. Some seemed familiar.

“Thou art I, and I am thou.” Continued to echo throughout the room, first in a strange voice until the echo distorted enough that each group member heard it in their own. In the first of the paintings,  a view of the countryside around Iburi, a butterfly moves.

“The enemy you’ve glimpsed will try to break you in both worlds.” The voice continues, now in each group member’s own voice and native tongue and worded in the words they would use. The butterfly has vanished from the first painting and now moves through a picture of a hospital ward, stopping to land on a bunch of flowers that have been left for a painted patient. “And weak bonds will only make their task easier. A human’s true power is what comes from outside, not from within, and no creature can be stronger than the bonds it has formed.” The butterfly moves though a plane of grass that was a little too green and plants too exotic and beautiful to be real. It glitches though the trunk of a tree and into the next picture, a photograph of Nanakamado that the group may recognise from seeing it hung in the school‘s reception area. “And without such bonds, you will surely fall. Continue as you are and there will be no hope.”

The butterfly moves from a grand oil painting of a western church into what appears to be an illustration for a fairy tale. A small gingerbread house in a dark wood. “I cannot do this a second time. Should you encounter a dire situation a second time I can save you but I cannot prevent you from experiencing death and such a thing would not be pleasant.” From the woods the butterfly moves into the remaining paintings but they are unclear and the image moves and swirls like water. Even counting them is difficult, there seem to be a different number every time such a thing is attempted.

“There are two more of you waiting to be found. From today on you will be able to tell someone with the potential to hold your power by sight.” The voice becomes more faint and distorted as the butterfly moves through the paintings that are further from the clear ones. “This place is not in your world and it is not in paradise. It will always be a safe place. Remember this, you may need it in the future.”

And in one of the swirling photographs the dark paint washes over the butterfly.

Both doors lead to a stairway that leads down to the school roof, one in paradise.

For the record, Toshimi's smile had stayed frozen in place throughout the entire fiasco, from the gingerbread to the shadows to the sudden incarceration (and subsequent execution?) by apparently divine beings. She had absolutely not been agonizing that if the Western conception of angels existed then so must have the Western conception of God, and the most inner part of herself was definitely not churning with worry about what it meant if there was really an omnipotent God. No, Toshimi, of course, was concerned with none of these things; Paradise, after all, was no more real than a recurring dream, so what happened there didn't matter.

But butterflies were real, and this one was speaking in her own voice. Toshimi stared as it moved through the paintings, eyes wide. She understood, on some level, that this was a message for them, but that the messenger had taken the form of a butterfly was...surprising. And something more. Toshimi felt the inner pressure that she usually ignored building up. It's only a butterfly. It's beautiful, isn't it? What is there to worry about?

She caught herself and the usual smile returned to her face. Of course, there was nothing to worry about. They seemed to be safe and that was what mattered, right? The butterfly had said so, after all.

"Not in our world and not in Paradise, huh?" she said. "Then..." she reached for her cell phone to see if her Persona would still come and maybe do something about all the injuries, but hesitated, not sure if it was a good idea. She settled for holding it up and moving it around to see what kind of reception she would get. "Is anybody getting a signal here?" she asked with a serene smile on her face.

Death, as it turns out, was rather cheap. It seemed that persona users didn't die when they were killed, which was a good thing. But it doesn't mean they had to like it.

Kanaye woke up. He immediately wished he hadn't. He felt worse then ever before. Maeko being a shadow, those angels...it was just too much to take. But he had always liked butterflies....

He sighed and sat up, looking around. "I never want to do that again...It was like being drunk..." he said quietly. "Anyone that's actually dead?"

Kouchisei was with Toru. His hands moved gently down the bloodied arm, checking for swelling - he noticed how warm the arm was, but didn't know if it was broken. Toru wasn't crying out with pain so he had to be fine, right?

"Try moving your arm," he said to Toru.

He looked back at Kanaye after that. "Doesn't seem so."

Toru greatly appreciated Kou's gentleness with the injured arm- outside of Paradise, his injuries hurt a hell of a lot more. Probably because his Persona was the one actually absorbing most of the damage. Maybe Kou really was cut out to be a doctor, after all...

He stretched his arm back and forth, testing it. Ow. Not broken, but definitely in pain. "I-It's not broken, at least..."

Renju was still sitting. She hadn't moved from the position she'd been in in the cage, save that she had nothing to lean on now. So much had happened that it was hard to take in, for more reasons than one. But for now, they were alive, and seemingly safe.

The voice had talked about bonds, and the necessity of forming them; she wasn't sure she understood, but it seemed that they were meant to stay together--for better or worse. At this point, she suspected 'worse', but maybe things would improve after this...

While she recovered, she watched the butterfly's path through the painting on the walls. One of them looked vaguely--but the image swirled just then, and with that the thought connected to it was gone.

Eventually, she rose on shaky, aching legs. The fight against the Shadows had taken more out of her than she'd thought, and some of the aftereffects were just now making themselves felt. "It looks like we're all alive."

Tom hadn't moved from his spot. He hadn't even breathed, he stood stock still, as the world changed, and the butterfly spoke to him.

When it was all over, he let out his first half choked shaky breath. His fingers clenched around the knife in his hand.

The voice had told them that without each other, they would be doomed, that their bonds were what gave them strength.

The thing was, Tom already thought that, he always felt that way. Wanting to be part of the team, to belong with this people, but every time he thought about it, he felt a sickening feeling in his stomach. A deep fear, and could almost hear a voice whisper

"Don't be stupid, they don't want you, they tolerate you, they put up with you, but they will never want you around."

Tom resolved to do what he always did, push all these feelings aside, the pain from his wounds in Paradise, all of it and focus on the mission.

He set his jaw and looked at the group.

"We still have to save Aoi from where ever Akuba put her."

"The Other Akuba-sempai," Kozue corrected, although rather quietly, and not immediately. At least, she had to hope that it had been the Shadow, and not the real Maeko to … well, put Misaki wherever Maeko had put her.

Speaking of "wherever", wherever in the universe were they now? It didn't make any kind of sense at all. For one thing, Kozue had been standing when everything had gone blindingly bright. It had taken her a little while to realize that somewhere in the interim, she'd ended up sitting (or sprawled, but really, mostly sitting, if awkwardly) on the ground.

That, though, wasn't really her biggest unanswered question at the moment. Hell, Kozue realized, it didn't even make top twenty. She took a deep breath, trying to get her eyes to stop misfocusing on… no, was that her eyes' fault, or was there something wrong with the room? The paintings, and the walls, all together, it didn't quite add up. Or she'd been hit in the head by one of the giant hands and couldn't remember it. Either way, it made her feel sick and dizzy enough that she wasn't up for standing. Especially not coupled with her own injuries. The vague, chilled feeling that had come from seeing and hearing the butterfly (the Persona butterfly? the me butterfly? the Kore butterfly?) in the pit of her stomach wasn't helping, either.

She could, however, pull out her phone, and glance down; was this Paradise enough to summon her Persona for healing? The real world enough to make phone calls? She glanced up, ready to answer Toshi's question. The smile, though. The smile was just unnerving. "I— I don't have anything from my network here."

Yoshimi, no stranger to waking up with a headache and no idea where she was, cracked her eyes open and started to take in her surroundings. Near her were Kou, Kanaye, and Toru, then the other groups, and then a butterfly. A magical, talking, faintly glowing butterfly claiming that it was her and that she was it.

"...damn, am I high?" She blinked as the events of the last hour started to come back to her. "...damn. Am I dead?"

She groaned, watching the butterfly float off towards... somewhere. Either her eyes weren't focusing right, or she'd broken her glasses. She had a sinking feeling that it was the former, probably a concussion — regardless of her Bromonade intake, she'd taken a real thrashing from the Shadows, and that was before the spell from the angels had hit her and she'd... what? Died? Whatever had happened, the aftermath felt like the worst hangover ever.

"Hnnngh," she said coherently, slinging an arm over her eyes. "Anyone know where we are?"

Finally, Kiriko's knees gave out from under her. This strange room, her own voice echoing around in her mind, all of it should have been far more terrifying than it was, but she had apparently already reached maximum capacity. There was something soothing about this place, and though it was quite possible that what was soothing about it was the lack of impending doom, it certainly wasn't making her feel any worse.

She listened closely, trying her best to swallow the lump in her throat and clenching her hands to keep them from shaking. When the voice dissipated, she continued to just sit. Now was not the time to process or consider that information - now was the time to go home, have some tea, curl up in bed and never look back.

She looked around the room.

"Is.. everybody alright?"

"Yeah, but we can't go anywhere. Toru's arm could be broken on the inside." Kou paused for a moment, trying to contain the urge to check Kiriko's arm for bumps. "You'll need an xray too. It could be your wrists. Anything."

He looked back at Toru. When he realised he'd forgotten to use the correct honorific, he blankly moved his gaze and shook his head. Big mistake. He'd collided and rolled along the floor of the cage, and his left arm felt intolerably warm. He moved his fingers a bit and closed his eyes.

"Course, it could be fractured. Both aren't pleasant."

Tom was up and looking around the room, trying to find an exit, and to understand this new place.

He spoke an a rather absent minded tone.

"Eh, I've fractured my arm before, you can keep functioning with it if you push passed the pain."
