Investigation Day 1
Who: Investigation Team, S!Kiriko, Hapless NPCs
What: Investigating Kiriko
Where: Kiriko's Dorms
When: Sunday
Why: Time to see what they're up against.

Kiriko's quad was more of a standalone building, adjoined at the back to the rest of the dorms' common room. Considerably more private, and from the looks of it, considerably more pricey.

This only made the appearance of two uniformed girls sitting glumly on the curb outside look all the odder.

One thumbed the pad on her cell phone, looking thoroughly annoyed with whatever was or wasn't coming up on the display. The other girl held a doorknob in one hand and every few seconds, out of some kind of compulsion, twisted around to cast nervous glances at the door behind her where the knob had once fit quite snugly.

"It's Sunday, nobody's going to come today," grumbled the first.
"But what are we supposed to do? I think she might have nailed it shut..."
"We could always stay with Ayase..."

Kanaye thought about how best to deal with Skiriko (possibly) as he was walking over to her dorm room. Maybe he could sweet talk her? He doubted it would work, but it might. Someone that uppity would improve greatly if she would get some once in a while. Or maybe just bribe her for the information? He has more then enough money. At least, he hoped he did.

He was so lost in his thoughts he didn't notice the girls on the curb into he nearly tripped over them. Righting himself, he quickly backed away, thinking he ran into some guys looking for a fight. However, when Kanaye noticed that his impromptu speed bumps were of the fairer sex, his face broke into one of his almost-omnipresent smiles. "Well, hell-o~ there ladies. What are pretty girls like you doing on a curb like this?"

Maeko still wasn't entirely sure how she felt about this whole thing. The things that got unearthed during these rescues were things she could do without knowing and things that she imagined the victims could do without making public. It'd be better for everyone if they tried to go through this learning as little as possible. If Kiriko was hiding something she didn't particularly want to unearth it it was possible not to.

And yet she was still tagging along. This had become habit already somehow.

"...smooth, senpai." She said, sighing before looking around. "Huh, so Ikeda-san's dorm isn't part of the main building?"

Tom paused as they came upon the girls. It wasn't hard to ascertain what they were doing, testing out the Paradise rumor. If they pulled it off, then, there would be one of three outcomes. Either they would enter paradise and each would get a persona, they would enter paradise, and nothing would happen, or they would enter paradise and at some point be attacked by Shadows.

If option 1 or option 3 occurred, then the group being there would be fortuitous. If option 2 occurred it would prove that not everyone who went into Paradise was a Persona user, and would provide even more information.

Of course with Sato there, it was unlikely the girls would continue their previous actions. This was however an indication of the beneficial applications for Sato, such as driving people off when the team needed to be alone. A much more subtle way, and less suspicious then having Shirai do it.

Either way, he mostly ignored the conversation, and kept his eyes peeled for their actual destination.

Girl one looked Kanaye over quite skeptically, while girl two took to looking over the rest of the group quite skeptically.

"Our roommate locked us out... kind of, I mean, I don't think she used locks." The girl frowned down at the doorknob in her hand, then consulted with the door over her shoulder, which unsurprisingly had not sprung open since she last checked 15 seconds ago.

"Oh, are you the group they sent over to get the door open or something...?" Her eyes skimmed the group and halted curiously on its bigger and more poorly reputed members. She imagined that Sagaki was probably pretty good at breaking doors down.

Kozue wandered up behind the rest of the group, twirling a lock of hair around one finger; she'd been disinterested in the mission to start with, but seeing Kiriko's roommates literally out on the curb surprised her into some kind of interest. Sure, they talked a lot--sure, they could be a bit annoying, but what on Earth was Kiriko thinking, locking them out? Sachiko and Kyoko were harmless, really. A sinking feeling was starting to form somewhere around the bottom of her stomach.

Kozue moved forward; "Hey, Sachiko-san, Kyoko-san, what's going on? Did Ikeda-san really lock you out?" She asked, tipping her head, looking at the two room-mates, face a mask of sympathy. It was something she was good at. "I can't believe she would do that, it's too cruel. Have you been out here for long?"

Kanaye cocked his head to the side, puzzled. "Kirichan locked you out? That's not like her. If she wanted to be alone she'd just go somewhere else..." he said. Mentally, he was already nodding. Yeah, this pretty much confirmed that Kiriko is in paradise. "Uh, yeah. Sure, we're here to open the door." he said, before turning to Tom. "Mind helping, Sagaki?"

Sachiko and Kyoko put their heads together for a moment, muttering quietly to one another in deliberation before standing, Sachiko leading the way with a wry smile to Kozue. "Yes, she really did. I thought that was obvious." She brandished the broken doorknob. "Anyway, if you guys are going to try to get it open, then good luck. We're going down to KigaKiga. Later, Kozue-san, and, er... everyone."

Behind her Kyoko gave a quick bow. "Um, thank you, I hope you can get it open..."

With that, the two of them were off on their way, leaving the crew alone with the door and its detached doorknob, discarded by Sachiko on the curb.

Toru quietly crept from behind where Kanaye and Kozue stood after the girls had left, and walked over to pick up the doorknob.

"W-wow, they must've been pretty desperate to do this... Kiriko-san meant business when she locked people out." Looking at the detached doorknob, he mused, "We should probably go in prepared for the worst, though... i-if it's a Shadow, after all."

Tom leaned down and looked at the knob.

"Well... I have opened the doors into the girls dorms, but... I always picked the lock."

He reached up to the back of his head, and ran his fingers through his hair.

"I've read about trying to break a door down... worth a shot."

Tom lifted his leg up and launched it forward toward the door directly under where the knob used to be.

He put his foot on the ground, and put his hands on his hips, ignoring the pain shooting up his legs. He looked at the un-opened door.

"Alright... so... umm... we might need a crowbar."

"I'm going to have to question the wisdom of breaking into school property, senpai." Maeko said, deciding to ignore the line about breaking into the girls' dorms. It was hardly unexpected. "I personally could do without being expelled."

She picked up the detatched doorknob, sighing. "There's got to be someone on duty even at the weekend in case of emergencies. Maybe we could find out who they are and tell them someone's trapped in there.

Kozue had waved after the two ousted roommates, before turning back to watch Sagaki throw himself at the door. Oh, ouch. She winced. "I guess she probably would have thought to lock the windows, huh? Or board them up, or... something." After all, it might be tough to explain this to a teacher. Especially if Kiriko was a Shadow, and things were going to get nasty, as Toru had predicted might happen.

"So, yeah, don't call for whoever is on duty just yet. Or get a crowbar, Sagaki-sempai. I'll go look around the building and see what's up."

"Um..."

Toshimi had been quietly contemplating the building up until this point. "We don't want to involve people unnecessarily," she nodded, agreeing with Kozue. "But instead of going around the building, we could...that is, wouldn't it be easier to...well, is there any reason why we can't go through the building?" She indicated towards the part of the main dorm building that connected to the quad in back. "I've never tried to go in here from the lounge, but...it does connect, doesn't it?"

She placed a hand on her chin, thinking. "Although, I guess Ikeda-san would have probably barred people somehow from there too...and those girls would have known about it if there was a way in, I suppose..." With those factors weighed in, Toshimi figured that the chances of getting in from within the building were rather low. "There will probably be more people to see us there, either way..." she sighed. She turned back to look at the group, smiling as usual. "Forget I said anything, actually."

Most of the windows were locked with curtain's drawn, but with one noteable exception - Kiriko's window was, at the very least, unbarricaded. She sat at her desk with notes and important-looking sheets and file folders spread out around her, occasionally turning to the computer to flick between spreadsheet tabs. Taped to the window from the inside was a less-than-friendly note that had mostly likely concluded communications between Kiriko and her roommates.

Eventually her eyes flicked up from her work and she caught sight of Kozue through the glass. After organizing the mess around her enough to allow for some mobility, she got to her feet and beelined to the window, grinning and snatching the note from it. Kiriko waved amiciably to Kozue, then held up a finger to ask her to hold on. She vanished from sight for a moment, then returned with a hammer, which she used to prise at least five nails out of the windowsill before unlocking it and throwing it open.

"Hey, Kozue-chan! Seen Sachiko or Kyoko around? I was wondering if you could keep them busy for me today, actually..."

It surprised Toru to see that Kiriko was, in fact, there, and willing to talk. He'd expected her to stay locked in the room, considering what she'd done to the door. But her exuberance and good cheer was unnerving. Was this the same serious, calm Kiriko who was supposed to be leading the investigation team? He shuddered. This was probably a Shadow.

Taking the initiative, he walked over towards the window. "Oh, Ikeda-san! Um... your roommates... they left. You, um, locked them out, you know. W-what are you up to?" He didn't have high expectations for her paying attention to him, but it was at least worth a shot.

"Oh, I know," she answered cheerily, waving the hammer in Toru's general direction in case he couldn't see it. "They're being especially obnoxious today. I'm doing important work and they're just hanging around here spying, can you believe it?"

With a chuckle, she leaned back to toss the hammer onto her bed, then poked back out the window.

"What's everyone doing here? Looks like you brought a meeting to me."

Kanaye gasped over dramatically. "Why, how DARE they! Don't they know not to interrupt someone with very important work to do! Why, I would give them a piece of my mind if they weren't girls!" he announced loudly.

"If they weren't girls, eh, Satou?" She lifted a brow, smiling in apparent amusement. "I'd say you've already ruined your chances at a hook-up by being yourself, so you might as well go after them!"

She propped her elbows up on the sill and her chin on her palm, looking towards Tom.

"Oh really? Deferring to your leader, then, in these troubled times? Sorry you couldn't get hold of me, I, ah, disconnected the phones..." She paused, and her eyes scanned the group. "But let's see, it doesn't seem that anyone is missing..."

Reizo hadn’t been in a particularly good mood for most of the day, and being dragged out on a useless shadow Kiriko meet and greet did little to lift his spirits. He had caught up with the group on school grounds, said hello with a grunt and baleful, sleep-deprived stare, and spent the rest of the time trailing along behind them with his hands stuffed in his pockets and broad shoulders hunched over in a walk straight out of a hammt yakuza noir movie. Then time had been blown lighting up a smoke and barely listening to Kiriko’s ejected roommates, snorting derisively at Sagaki shoulder blocking the door, giving the door a few experimental kicks himself, and then slowly making his way around to the rest of the group again.

Who’d somehow managed to get Kiriko--the thing’s-- to open her window and talk to them.

So while they all yapped on under the weak pretense of concern for her and concern for some nameless teammate that might be lost over in that other world, Reizo had walked up to underneath the window and started pondering.

He MIGHT be able to get a handhold on the window if he had a running start, but it wasn’t a sure thing and she’d almost definitely shut the window if she saw it coming. He sighed out a cloud of smoke, tipped his head back and stared up at the woof wistfully. If only they had someone to repel down the side of the building into her window.. He turned to look the group over, frowned hard at Sagaki for not having thought that up already, and then picked over the group one-by-one.

Until he settled on Kozue, marched over to behind her, and boosted her up onto his shoulders as if she were a child. He gave her a brief warning to straighten her legs, lifted her higher up the closer they got to the wall, made a passing remark about her panties, and lobbed her up into the window once he was sure she had hold of the sill.

“Who’s next?” He asked the group after pinching out his cigarette and tucking it behind his ear.

Now, Kozue hadn't shown up to this expecting to be chucked in a window. She didn't show up to many things expecting to be tossed around like a sack of potatoes, in fact. It just... didn't happen. In polite society, at least, but then again, Reizo had shown up.

So the polite society thing was in question already. She should have considered that.

But, she didn't. So when Reizo scooped her up, she blinked; she was struck mute enough, and confused enough, that she only really had time for the one panicked wail as he actually launched her through Kiriko's window.

The loud wail became a scream. The scream, in turn, was cut rather short as she cleared any furniture right under the window and landed, with a roll and a thud, on the floor. Where she sat in a completely dazed disarray for a moment, hair everywhere, head spinning.

"... I--wha. Wha? Ow."

The dorm looked a lot worse from the inside. Everything within a meter radius of Kiriko's work area was cluttered but organized, with papers organized by date or alphabetized and fanned out in front of her or stacked in neat piles nearby.

Beyond the meter radius was a disaster.

Whatever had happened here had not happened peacefully. For one thing, she had not "disconnected" the phones so much as ripped the cord from the wall, and one of the phones looked as though it had recently met up with her hammer. The door was nailed haphazardly shut, nails bent to keep it from opening, though the one connected to the dorms was simply locked. Furniture had been overturned and it was easy to imagine the shattered fragments of something strewn about the floor here and there had once been lamps or dishes, thrown in anger.

Kiriko herself dodged the incoming Kozue and stepped back to gawk in surprise. After watching her for a moment, Kiriko stepped over to the window and stuck her head out, looking down at Reizo.

"Oi!" She grinned. "It was a nice throw, but if you want to come in, you should just ask to use the other door!"

She closed the window partway to avoid any flying Renjus or what-have-you while she turned her back to face Kozue.

"Or are they trying to isolate you because you're the 'other' Kozue...? Hm, where did I put that rope..."

She'd been staring around at the disaster area that had once been her classmate's room, but Kiriko's last comment broke her quite out of it. She gawked, and started to scramble to her feet.

"R-rope?"

That was a loud, frightened squeak that anyone outside could easily hear. And then, "Kiriko-san, I'm just the normal me, I don't think you need---rope? Really?"

Kiriko smiled a big, charming smile as she tore the sheet off the nearby bed, twisting it into something approximately ropelike and giving it a few tugs to test the strength.

"Well, we're better safe than sorry, don't you think?"

She lunged at Kozue, threw the sheet-rope around her back and had it twisted in the front seconds later. She stepped in closer and put her arms around Kozue to knot it tightly in the back while simultaneously keeping her from struggling too much, humming something merry as she did so. When she was done, she stepped back to admire her handiwork, pointing authoritatively at the bed.

"Sit, or I'll have to do your feet, too!"

Tom blinked for a moment at what had occured.

(In truth he had actually considered repelling down from the roof, but figured it was far too obvious a road to take, at least before all other options had been exhausted.)

Throwing Kozue into the room however was not a plan he had considered. At first he thought to reprimand Shirai, but certainly others would want to do that.

And if his studies had shown him anything, it should be Ito's job to show interest and stick up for his girlfriend. At least that's how he was supposed to act.

All of that paled compared to the fact that Shirai had just trapped Kondo alone with the Shadow of Ikeda. Kondo, who didn't even have offensive skills in Paradise.

Tom judged that to be the most important issue to deal with at the moment. Ikeda's window was slightly higher then the one he usually climbed into, but he had a great deal of experience entering and exiting dorms rooms via windows.

He finally looked at Reizo when he asked who was next.

"Me. I'm next. Give me a boost up, Now!"

Kiriko's head snapped back around as she heard that. She left the window partly closed and instead just leaned down to be heard through the open part, though it was open enough for her to stick her arm out and wag a finger at Tom.

"No way! If you're all going to play window-jumper, the creepy guy comes in last. I don't know if I want him in here at all, the nosy little punk!"

She withdrew the hand and set it on the windowsill.

"Oh, but I did want to talk to the other punk. Oi, Shirai, you know that folder you've got on the Ikedas? Think you could go through it and photocopy the juicy bits for me? For a rewarding fee, of course, and I'm paying quite well..."

Reizo frowned hard at the group, looked impatiently at Renju, and deflated when he heard the rattle of the window closing behind him. So much for their glorious sneak attack. Well, it hadn’t been a well thought out plan to begin with..

He canted his head back at the loud squeak, frowned harder around his cigarette, then fixed the group with another withering stare. He really just wanted to go back to his house and back to sleep, but somehow he’d managed to get himself all the more embroiled in the situation when all he’d meant to do was find a solution and leave quickly.

“Don’t order me around, you little shit. If you wanted to go, you should’ve ran to me before she closed the window.”

He muttered low to himself after addressing Tom, something about if you want the job done right, and marched past the group to get enough room for a running start on the window. A childhood of gymnastics and a passing interest in parkour made the jump difficult but doable, and planted a basketball question into his mind.

“I dunno what you’re talking about,” he said through the strain of pulling himself up and trying to jimmy the window open with one hand. “Or why,” he started again, this time addressing Kozue, “Someone with your obvious experience of being tied up hasn’t slipped through the knots and opened the damned window!”

The smile was gone - she'd reached breaking point. She watched cooly for a moment as Reizo struggled with the window. Idiot. He had it partway open when her hand shot out and the heel of her palm collided with the bridge of his nose. She shoved his head well back, then withdrew her hand and went for the window, quickly slamming it shut on his arm still wedged in the sill. After grinding it into his arm a moment, she opened it a tiny bit and slammed it down on him again, repeating until he let go.

When he did drop down, she glared icily down at the group. She considered her next move, and when she'd determined it, a smirk crept slowly across her face.

"Just a moment."

She closed and locked the window, vanishing from view of the group and rounding on the bound Kozue.

"So, Kondo," her tone was pleasant enough, but the smirk was still in place. "Why are you all here, again?"

When Kiriko, who at this point was quite obviously a Shadow, slammed the window down on Reizo's arm until he was forced to let go, the first thought that ran through Toru's mind was catch him. For some reason, this thought energized the boy and moved him forward on surprisingly confident legs until common sense caught up with him. First off, the reasonable part of his mind said, what do think Reizo would do to you if you even attempted that? It wouldn't be pretty. Especially after what happened the other day when you tried to 'apologize' to him. And second, he'd crush you if he landed on you. He weighs twice as much as you do, and you're just a wimpy otaku who's never worked out in his life. This one-two punch of practicality hit Toru like a baseball to the stomach, and he stopped himself about a foot away from Reizo.

"A-ah... never mind," he started, quietly, "M-more importantly, we need to save Kondo-san!" He looked up at the now-closed window, distressed.

Toshimi watched the scene unfold, not entirely sure what the best course of action would be. She wondered if Kozue would be able to let them inside somehow. Toshimi couldn't see what was going on in there, but from the sound of things it seemed unlikely. Just walking in was still an impossibility. Reizo's window idea hadn't been fundamentally bad... Well, okay, the idea of throwing people through the window had been fundamentally bad, but the window itself could be a valid weak point to the building. "The window..." she murmured, thinking.

"If we broke it, what do you think the chances are that we'd get away with it?" she asked the group. "We could probably say that Ikeda-san did it with a certain amount of plausibility, considering the property damage that's already taken place. Or even that it was a random act of street violence, I guess..."

She looked around, trying to spot some easy (non-human) ammunition. "If I had a rock or something, I could easily throw it through Ikeda-san's window, and then Shirai-san could, er, do his thing again." Her eyes fell on the first story windows. "Or we could break through one of those and take the stairs," she suggested. "The broken glass would be pretty dangerous, though. I guess that we probably shouldn't...does anybody else have an idea?"

Misaki had not wanted to go. If this was a Shadow version of Kiriko she was scared of what might be said or done. She liked Kiriko too much to see her like this, and had missed the early call from Maeko. Now guilt was eating at her and she had grabbed her phone and hurried out onto the sidewalk running to the school.

Did she honestly think she could avoid this? Even if she wasn't the most useful memeber the fact was that Kiriko was her friend...no one of her BEST friends, and she couldn't just turn her back now because she was afraid of what she was going to face.

Biting her lip she ran down the paths to the dorms until she spotted the group and hurried up to them.

"What happened..." she looked around, "Hey where's Kozue-chan?"

Kanaye just facepalmed at Reizo's plan, and was glad to see him fall. Serves him right. Turning to the newly arrived Misaki, he replied deadpan "In Shadow Kiriko's room. Reizo here had the EXCELLENT idea of throwing Kozue into the room in order to get up. And naturally, we pissed her off and she locked Kozue in there."

Realizing now is the perfect time to look like an idiot, he grabbed Misaki's hands and shouted "But do not worry, Misachan! We shall save Kochan if it's the last thing we do! I hope it's not, but my point still stands!"

"We don't want to blame too much on her." Maeko said quietly in response to Toshimi's suggestions. "I's alredy going to be troublesome for the real her if we manage a rescue. It'd be good to avoid making it any worse..."

She tried to come up with a better suggestion bu tinstead stared uselessly at the now closed window, concerned. Toru hadn't been dangerous until they were actually over there, she hadn't been prepared for this at all. At least Misaki was out of danger-

She was snapped out of her concentration by Misaki's voice. Figured.

"Senpai." She said, acknowledging Kanaye's excellent demonstation of looking like a fool but not saying anything else about it. She needed to keep in Kanaye's good books now and that included not making threats on his life.

"You just stay where it's safe, okay? We- We'll get this sorted out for sure. You just keep yourself out of danger." She said, forcing the nicest smile she could given the circumstances and then turning back to the window with renewed determination. Misaki would be upset if they couldn't resolve this successfully.

"Shirai-san, are you okay?" She asked. Reizo was a valuable resource and it was important to know if they still had him as one.

Meanwhile, inside: Kozue had been struggling a little against the makeshift ropes--really, how could a bed sheet be this strong? It made no sense! So her struggling had been largely ineffective.

She decided to try wriggling her hands out, and was sitting tight, listening to what the group was saying outside: Reizo, in particular, when his head popped into view at the windowsill. "Obvious--hey!" She frowned. "Besides, you're assuming I'm the one who gets tied up!"

She raised her nose snootily. If she'd been free to stand, she probably would have flounced out of the room, but that wasn't going to happen. When the window slammed shut, over and over again, she winced. Well, he kind of deserved it, but only kind of.

And then the Shadow turned and rounded on her. Kozue gulped. "Uh. Kiriko-san. You know, I didn't know you were into this kind of thing." A nervous laugh. "Although I guess I should have expected it. You have that whip, after all." She smiled, and completely ignored the Shadow's question. She also happened to glance up at Kiriko's face, and... Hey, wait, something was wrong with her eyes.

Kiriko didn't laugh. The jokes had the opposite effect, and instead her expression grew graver as she crossed the room.

"Kozue-san." Kiriko frowned, circling the bed to check that the knot she'd put the sheet was still holding fast. She folded her arms over her chest, keeping a careful eye on Kozue as she walked towards the bedroom door. She kicked the door shut with one post, paying no attention to the loud slam. With the window shut and the only exit barred, there would be no need to bind her feet as well. Kiriko then leaned against the closed door, regarding Kozue appraisingly through narrowed eyes.

"I asked you a question. Why are you all disturbing me?"

She really didn't know whether telling Kiriko at this point was allowed, or if they were still trying to keep it a secret, but... if they were, hell, she didn't want to be the person to screw it up. Besides. Maybe she could keep the... the thing with Kiriko's face distracted until Reizo or Sagaki could effectively break in. And it couldn't go all monstery out here, right? ... Right?

"And I-ah, don't think I need to respond to you, Kiriko-san, since you currently have me tied up on your floor." She took a breath. Well, that would have had more effect if she hadn't stuttered while saying it. "It's rather unkind."

As she spoke, she also hoped, fervently, that the shadow couldn't see her shaking slightly.

Kiriko smiled.

"Actually, I'd count that as a very good reason why you do need to respond to me." She tapped her cheek with one slender finger, chuckling to herself a little. "Actually, the next step would be you tied up on my floor with my foot on your face... that's if I didn't like you so much, Kozue-chan."

She inclined her head slightly and lifted her brows as she spoke to make a point of calling into question exactly how much she did like Kozue.

"Well, I know why you're all here, anyway." She tore her eyes from Kozue and pushed off of the door, glancing at the desk where she had been working, but her eyes were back on her captive a moment later. "It's a waste of time. And an annoying one, at that. None of you are helping us any." she smirked at the plural reference. "So, I'll tell you what - I'll send you back out, and you and the rest of them go home and leave me in peace. Or, if they don't want to leave..." She glared towards the window, then towards Kozue. "You stay here and shut up so that I can I work."

Still shaking slightly, Kozue listened, getting more and more confused: us? work? What was she working on, anyway? She spared a few glances around the room--after all, it was strewn with papers and notes. And that was... what people worked on, right? So what would a Shadow work on?

After a moment, "I bet we could just go home and let you do... whatever it is you're doing."

After all: what if they snuck into Paradise while the Shadow was busy out here terrorizing Kiriko's room-mates? Maybe they could save the real Kiriko without all of that messy fighting and game-playing. Unfortunately, this was about where Kozue's train of thought reached the end of its tracks: she had no time to trouble herself about what they'd do with the Shadow who was out here in the real world (zany twin antics? ooh! antics!), or how the rest of the team would react to quietly giving up and going home.

But, y'know, it was an alternative to physical violence, and she approved of that.
