Action Scene: Severus confronts his wayward Godson

Severus stood impatiently on the steps of Malfoy manor. He was in search of his Godson for an explination as to why he was ignoring his owls. When the House-elf finally opened the door, Severus had worked himself in to a temper.

"Where is my godson?" he asked, pushing past the elf.

"Master Draco is on the pitch, Pro --"

Severus didn't wait for the elf to finish before he was striding through the halls of the Manor. When he finally reached the door leading to the 'backyard' of the Manor, it slammed open with a bang. He stormed across the perfectly manicured lawn until he reached the Quidditch Pitch. Draco was flying above him, and whether Draco was ignoring him or just hadn't seen him, Severus couldn't have said. Either way, enough was enough.

Putting a wand to his throat he muttered "Sonorous." A moment later, his voice boomed across the open space. "Draco! I suggest you get down here, now."

Severus removed the spell and waited to see what his Godson would do.

Draco stared at him hopelessly. "That's not..." he started. He shook his head. "Damn it Severus, now I don't remember why I was mad at you," he burst out. He turned around and walked away. He hated it when Severus did this, made him feel like a complete child. "What if I wanted to be Potter's friend? Just his friend. He would never believe me now, you made me out to be some heartless, conniving bastard," he said softly.

"No I didn't, I made your father out to be a conniving heartless bastard who was putting ideas in to your head. As I told your father, I think cultivating an actual friendship with Potter, as opposed to some false romance would serve you well. Perhaps death mellowed Potter out. He tolerates me after all, for reasons I've yet to comprehend."

"Actually Severus, you just said Malfoys in general. You didn't say Lucius specifically," he said quietly.

Severus had been trying to figure out where Draco had heard these things, and it finally clicked. "You were eavesdropping at the party weren't you?" The thought shouldn't have made him smile, but it was so very Slytherin, he was oddly proud, despite his irritation.

"Thinking on that night, I probably did speak of Malfoys in general. Honestly Draco, I hadn't given much thought to our conversation when I was talking to Potter. I was more concerned with the things your father had told me not five minutes before." Severus looked his Godson in the eye, reaching out to place a hand on his shoulder. "I did not set out to intentionally betray you. I was more concerned with preventing any of your father's plans to coming to fruition that night, and since you refused to look at me, let alone talk to me, I had no idea what plans were already in motion. So I had to use a blanket defense and cover all angles. I apologize if you were hurt in the process. It was no my intention."

Draco pulled away. "Blanket defense or not Severus, I'm sure that some of what you said was the truth. And besides, since when have you care about Potter so much that you would feel it necessary to protect him from me. Whether you planned to or not you did betray me. I told you the plan in confidence, I trusted you."

Severus dropped his hand. He knew that to an extent, Draco was right. "I didn't realize you were so invested in the plan, nor that you would take my intervention so personally. For that, I apologize."

"As for Potter, that is complicated and not something I entirely understand myself. I've been protecting him from one thing or another since the day his mother was murdered. Perhaps it's habit now," he said, shrugging.

He looked at Draco, studying him. "Is the silent treatment over now? You've been angry with me before, but you've never reacted this way. I'd rather it didn't become a common occurrence. I miss your horrid company."

Draco snorted and turned away. "I wasn't invested, not exactly. It's just father looked so proud when I told him and that rarely happens. I know it was a bad plan and a stupid idea but it's nice sometimes when he doesn't look at me like I'm a complete failure." Draco sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have overreacted like I did, it's just that I've gotten used to having you completely to myself and I hated the thought of sharing you. And with Potter no less."

"My home is always open to you Draco, and you must believe me when I say that you are one of a kind and irreplaceable in my life. Now, do not force me to become sentimental, as you know I loathe to become so," he said, a slight smirk on his face.
