Action Scene: Severus confronts his wayward Godson

Severus stood impatiently on the steps of Malfoy manor. He was in search of his Godson for an explination as to why he was ignoring his owls. When the House-elf finally opened the door, Severus had worked himself in to a temper.

"Where is my godson?" he asked, pushing past the elf.

"Master Draco is on the pitch, Pro --"

Severus didn't wait for the elf to finish before he was striding through the halls of the Manor. When he finally reached the door leading to the 'backyard' of the Manor, it slammed open with a bang. He stormed across the perfectly manicured lawn until he reached the Quidditch Pitch. Draco was flying above him, and whether Draco was ignoring him or just hadn't seen him, Severus couldn't have said. Either way, enough was enough.

Putting a wand to his throat he muttered "Sonorous." A moment later, his voice boomed across the open space. "Draco! I suggest you get down here, now."

Severus removed the spell and waited to see what his Godson would do.

Draco's hands slipped a little on the handle, causing him to pitch forward slightly. He caught himself after a moment. He spun around and looked down. A black-clad figure are staring up at him. A black-clad, batty-looking figure was looking up at him. Draco's lips thinned into a narrow line. Apparently Mother and Pansy couldn't leave well enough alone.

He flew in a lazy circle trying to decide whether or not he wanted to go down and confront Severus or fly off. Flying off seemed like a very feasible at the moment. he had come out here to be alone and give himself room to think. Well that wasn't going to happen now.

He flew down until he was hovering above Severus' head, just out of reach. He raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything.

"If you continue to act like a child, Draco, I will be forced to treat you as one," Severus said through clenched teeth. "Get your feet on the ground and tell me what has you acting this way."

"I am acting like a child?" he said with a snort. "Of course you would think so, since you didn't get your way," he retorted. "Tell me Severus has being around Potter destroyed all your ability to be subtle. Because generally when letters are returned unopened it means the person does not wish to speak to the sender."

Severus was truly boggled. "What has gotten in to you?"

"Don't play dumb Severus, it doesn't suit you," Draco snapped. "Well I guess it's an unfortunate side effect of sleeping with Potter."

Severus' jaw dropped for a moment before snapping shut.

Sleeping with Potter?

"The only time I have slept with Potter was when we were both drunk, and that is all we did, sleep. Fully clothed I might add," he ground out through clenched teeth. "Not that what I do in the privacy of my own bedroom is anyone's business, least of all yours."

"Of course not, I just thought you would like to inform your Godson, since he walked in on Potter naked in your hallway. But of course he didn't tell you that did he?" he asked. "Tell me Severus anything else you have neglected to inform me of?" he asked coldly. "How about just how much you despise us?"

"You walked in on -- what? When was Potter naked in my hallway?" Severus asked, trying to follow the odd turn of conversation.

"I don't despise you, Draco. How could you even think that for a moment?" he asked, feeling as though he'd been punched in the gut. "After everything I've done for you. Everything I have sacrifice for you. Good god, Draco, I killed for you! And still -."

Words failed him. He had sworn on his very life to protect Draco, knowing it would mean his own death if he failed. He had killed Albus to spare, Draco. That Draco could still question his affection was like a physical blow.

Draco froze, his hands tightening on the broom handle. No, he squeezed his eyes shut and looked away. No he was mad at Severus, he had a good reason. He did. The argument sounded weak even in his head.

"I'm not saying you don't care Severus," he finally managed to say, "However caring for someone is not the same as liking them. And you do not like the Malfoys. You have always made that clear. I just never realized how much you disapproved."

"Perhaps you have failed to notice that your family as a whole can be cold, calculating and downright cruel," Severus said, his fists clenching at his side. "On the whole, no, I do not like their ways or methods, particularly when I am the one forced to pay the price for it."

Severus looked at Draco, shaking his head sadly. "But do not doubt for a moment that I don't care for you. Or your mother and father. They know how I feel about their methods, but they also know that I would have their backs when necessary. I thought you knew that as well, but I have apparently misjudged our relationship."

Draco narrowed his eyes, the momentary hurt giving away to anger. There was an emotion he could deal with. "But see Severus it's the having my back part that confuses me. You always have. However, ever since the War has ended you have joined the masses in worshiping Potter. So much so that you felt that the need to warn him away. Now how is that looking out for me?"

Draco frowned at him. "You were always the one person I could count on to despise Potter, but now I don't know anymore. You couldn't keep your eyes off him during the dinner party. Did it not strike you as strange that Mother seated you next to him?"

"Worshiping Potter? Have you gone mad? Of all of the things I do or do not, feel for Potter, worship is not one of them. And yes, I did warn him away, more than once. He has been a pawn in others machinations long enough, just as you have been your parents puppet long enough. I saw an opportunity to protect you both and I took it, and I would make the same choice again, whether you liked it or not."

Severus ran frustrated hand through his hair. "Is that what you wanted? To live your life in the shadow of Potter? You don't need him, can't you see that? You are more than capable of living life on your own terms, Draco, you just refuse to believe it."

"Have you completely forgotten who my father is?" he snapped. "Do you honestly believe he will just let it go? At least if I pretended to play along he would have left me alone, but now I don't even have that option. He doesn't care what I'm capable of, he only cares that I do as he says. I am tired of fighting him." Draco gave in and lowered himself to the ground. He let his broom fall from his hands and ran them over his face. he couldn't even remember why he was mad at Severus anymore.

"How could I forget when Lucius so enjoys reminding me every moment?" Severus said, rolling his eyes. "Your father is not an idiot. Pretending wouldn't have fooled him for a moment. Damn it, Draco if you talked to me instead of throwing a bloody tantrum," he growled.

"I talked to your father at the dinner party, and he didn't seem wholly opposed to my taking you on as an Apprentice. But even that is merely one option, you have no many more if only you'd stop living in fear of your father's anger. If you'd like to tell him that you're pursuing the Apprenticeship until you find something you really want to do, I will allow him to believe that is the case. It would give you time to make your own choices."

Draco stared at him hopelessly. "That's not..." he started. He shook his head. "Damn it Severus, now I don't remember why I was mad at you," he burst out. He turned around and walked away. He hated it when Severus did this, made him feel like a complete child. "What if I wanted to be Potter's friend? Just his friend. He would never believe me now, you made me out to be some heartless, conniving bastard," he said softly.

"No I didn't, I made your father out to be a conniving heartless bastard who was putting ideas in to your head. As I told your father, I think cultivating an actual friendship with Potter, as opposed to some false romance would serve you well. Perhaps death mellowed Potter out. He tolerates me after all, for reasons I've yet to comprehend."

Severus had been trying to figure out where Draco had heard these things, and it finally clicked. "You were eavesdropping at the party weren't you?" The thought shouldn't have made him smile, but it was so very Slytherin, he was oddly proud, despite his irritation.

"Thinking on that night, I probably did speak of Malfoys in general. Honestly Draco, I hadn't given much thought to our conversation when I was talking to Potter. I was more concerned with the things your father had told me not five minutes before." Severus looked his Godson in the eye, reaching out to place a hand on his shoulder. "I did not set out to intentionally betray you. I was more concerned with preventing any of your father's plans to coming to fruition that night, and since you refused to look at me, let alone talk to me, I had no idea what plans were already in motion. So I had to use a blanket defense and cover all angles. I apologize if you were hurt in the process. It was no my intention."

Draco pulled away. "Blanket defense or not Severus, I'm sure that some of what you said was the truth. And besides, since when have you care about Potter so much that you would feel it necessary to protect him from me. Whether you planned to or not you did betray me. I told you the plan in confidence, I trusted you."

Severus dropped his hand. He knew that to an extent, Draco was right. "I didn't realize you were so invested in the plan, nor that you would take my intervention so personally. For that, I apologize."

"As for Potter, that is complicated and not something I entirely understand myself. I've been protecting him from one thing or another since the day his mother was murdered. Perhaps it's habit now," he said, shrugging.

He looked at Draco, studying him. "Is the silent treatment over now? You've been angry with me before, but you've never reacted this way. I'd rather it didn't become a common occurrence. I miss your horrid company."

Draco snorted and turned away. "I wasn't invested, not exactly. It's just father looked so proud when I told him and that rarely happens. I know it was a bad plan and a stupid idea but it's nice sometimes when he doesn't look at me like I'm a complete failure." Draco sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have overreacted like I did, it's just that I've gotten used to having you completely to myself and I hated the thought of sharing you. And with Potter no less."

"My home is always open to you Draco, and you must believe me when I say that you are one of a kind and irreplaceable in my life. Now, do not force me to become sentimental, as you know I loathe to become so," he said, a slight smirk on his face.

"Fine," he said, completely exasperated. "Only because I don't remember why I was made at you anymore." He smirked suddenly, "You know Severus, if you plan on hanging out with Potter, sentimentality will be required all the time. Gryffindors are all about group hugs and heart to hearts."

"Yes, it would."

Severus had no illusions about himself. Competing with Draco for Potter's attention wouldn't end well for him. There was no way he would come out on top in that equation. Draco could be extremely charming, and Merlin knew he was good looking, and Severus was neither of those things.

The person who his father had always compared him too, the person who always managed to beat him at everything, the person who saw him at his worst and now he was going to lose his Godfather to him as well. His hand tightened around the handle of his broom. "Well Severus rest assured the silent treatment is over," he said stiltedly.

With a final look at Draco, Severus Disapparated.
