Afternoon Delight (tag: Peitho)
The sounds from the reed pipe were soothing. The melodic tones never failed to relax his mind, and for someone like Hermes, whose mind was a constant whirl of activity filled with webs of barely connected threads of thought, it was almost miraculous. It helped that here, in one of his many meadows, he was also gazing upon his animals. They only added to that sense of peace.
Sometimes it seems to Hermes that everyone always thinks it's all about the cows. At least the mortals, or those who don't know him well. Hermes was the God of Animal Husbandry, not just the God of Cows. Even Hathor, that ancient one from Thoth's land, was more than just that, and she could actually become a cow. The first time he saw that happen was not something he ever forgot.
As it so happened, he was not anywhere near his herd of cattle, but was playing for his flock of sheep. He loved the sheep, their innocent, sometimes gullible, behavior. The herd itslf had a mentality, and in times of panic could almost resemble that of a mob. Here, they had nothing to fear unless he willed it. Animal husbandry was not just about raising animals, but also controlling the population, and sometimes it was necessary to allow nature to take its course. Today was not one of those days.
Hermes paused a moment in his playing to smile at a pair of lambs that were playing together. He laughed aloud at their frolicking, before raising the pipes to his mouth again, switching to a livelier tune to match their movements.
