Ah, to be full. To be satisfied. To feel strong and powerful once again. It was a position they had not been in for a very long time, and to be so now was heady in a way that made them nearly drunk with it. It had been a good ride, a fine hunt, and none had wanted it to end.
So when the leader did not return them to that place between being and nothing that they inhabited for most of the year, she was not challenged. Thus far, things had been different, better. So much better. No one of them was willing to give up the possibility of more. Greed, something that had never left them, surged to the fore. There had to be more. There would be more.
There was still the scent on the air.
The scent that had told them this year would be different. It had been so long, so very long, that they had not recognized it for what it was. Most of them still did not, though a few were aware that it meant good things. But the leader, she knew what that scent was. She remembered it well, and she knew what it signified. They were not finished. They were not nearly finished.
