It had been a long time since they’d had a night like tonight.
Other years, other times, the flavor of the wind had been different. They had ridden, but they had not ridden, and it was hollow. It left them weak and needy. It left them hungry.
So hungry that it was hard to keep them in check once they caught the scent. This year would be no meager pickings. There would be no sucking on the bones for scraps. There would be meat, dripping with fat and blood. There would be satisfaction, a thing so foreign that it had almost been forgotten.
They waited, impatiently, for the signal to begin. All eyes were fixed on the leader as she stood motionless. What she was waiting for, none knew, but she was the leader for a reason and whatever sign she was waiting for before giving the command was one only she could see. So she watched for the right moment, and they watched her.
Then her arm raised, fist closed. Seconds later, her arm fell in a short chopping motion, and she turned to mount. The rest of them scrambled to do the same, no one wishing to be the last in place, the one holding them back from what they all longed to do.
