She touched the toe of her shoe to the crack in the sidewalk, admiring the soft texture of the leather. Twisting her ankle to get a get a better look at the cute straps, Lottie had the thought that maybe she’d better not stretch too far. It wasn’t as though she was the most graceful and well balanced of goddesses, and it wouldn’t do to give herself a sprain before the night even began.
It was just fidgeting. As it had been when she kept braiding and unbraiding small plaits into her hair until she realized she was destroying all of the work that she’d put into making it look glamorous and beautiful. As it had been when she’d found a thread on the hem of her blouse and started picking at it until it had unraveled and the seam had come undone, and she’d had to go home to change.
