Time For a Plan B (tag: Horus) [20 Feb 2008|02:51pm]
Thoth or Horus? It was an easy question, one that required little thought. When she left Gwydyon, Isis immediately split; part of her going to London, the other to her son's temple. Horus might not be pleased with the notion, but if there was anyone at all who could calm Set down, it was probably Thoth. Gwydyon's warnings had left more questions than answers, but she had no doubt the family could handle whatever needed to be done. It was really just a question of how.

He was an odd one, this Gwydyon. Isis still couldn't understand why he went out of his way to find her. He assured her he could handle whatever Set threw his way, despite her own thoughts to the contrary, so he hadn't been seeking aid or refuge. It wasn't as if she'd spent much time with him either, when they first met and she retrieved his captive, so their were no bonds of friendship or loyalty there. At least not then. She was still sure there was a certain scoundrel aspect to him, something dark that simmered under the surface. Nice guys didn't usually turn someone into a toad. There had been something in his eyes, too, something that spoke of mischief, and perhaps a bit more...not evil, exactly, but something that said he was not someone to cross. And yet he did something that seemed little more than a good deed. Something told her she hadn't seen the last of this particular Welshman. Nor, likely, had her daughter, she surmised, remembering the exchanged looks.

Maybe she should have just killed Set when the opportunity presented itself, and damn the treaty, the thought of balance, and damn her brother, as well. It sure would have saved them all a lot of trouble. But it wasn't in her. She was Life, after all, and doing such a thing went against her very existence. Something else Horus would do well to remember.

Appearing in his temple, she went straight to the throne room. Considering their last conversation, she half contemplated prostrating herself before him to make a point, but decided it was best not to start out on the wrong foot. It was already likely things would go sour soon enough. Instead she nodded her head in slight deference to his position, greeting him informally, "Good afternoon, Horus. I come bearing news for the ear of the King."

What Wisdom Doesn't Know (tag: Thoth) [20 Feb 2008|04:12pm]
Isis had never carried any weapons, what need had she of those? Her magic was the only weapon she had ever needed, and even then it was rarely used for such lowly things as fighting. Hence, she was quickly escorted to  Thoth's study, where it appeared he had been busy. Planning her punishment, no doubt. Scrolls, books and papers cluttered nearly every surface of the room. She wondered if anywhere in that mess he would find the knowledge of having a heart and a little compassion for someone who had lost their only love, and was struggling to find the right way to handle it. She doubted it. Nothing on earth mattered as much as that damnable treaty.

She supposed that wasn't fair, really. Thoth had never done anything to harm her, exactly, and they really did like each other, despite the obviously different points of view they had regarding Chaos. Well, she had tried to warn him, but he was blinded by his insistence on Balance. She wondered how he would take this particular news flash.

"Good evening, Uncle. I hope you are feeling well." She had enough respect for him to wait for him to go through the usual motions of offering her something to drink, and the usual hospitalities. She herself was quite a gracious hostess, under most circumstances, but he took such things to a different extreme. She suspected it had something to do with living among the stuffy British for so long. She wasn't sure she herself had actually seen one laugh. But it was where he enjoyed living, and far be it for her to judge. Though how he could stand the constant dampness was entirely beyond her.

Find the Lady (tag: Zelos) [20 Feb 2008|04:46pm]
Apate watched carefully without appearing as though she was watching at all. The kids were good, really good. But they were going to have a short run. She took a sip of her coffee from the squeaky styrofoam cup, glancing up the path to check for the approach of law enforcement. There was no doubt they would show up eventually.

While the Capitol Hill Parks were not the tourist draw that some of the other parks in the city were, the police were still going to look down on a Three Card Monte game being set up here. It was a little redundant, considering the much larger scams that took place not far away, perpetrated by men bearing the title of senator and governor, but this quick young man with his nimble fingers and his pretty little innocent-faced partner were running one of the oldest grifts in the book. A short con. Same scam as the shells and pea, though these days it was more common to use bottle caps than walnut shells. Apate thought the cards were more clever, easy to replace, easier to grab and run when the cops showed up. And those who upheld the laws passed by the dishonest old farts on the Hill wouldn’t hesitate to haul these kids off to jail if they caught them.

But Apate wasn’t going to call attention to their actions. )
