Decisions
Who: Shelley and Micah
What: Sibling stuff
When: Evening, Sunday, August 17
Where: Redding Farm
Rating: low

With most of his business in the city taken care of, Micah headed home around sunset. He wasn't sure who would be home, but that wasn't unusual. The farmhouse had an open door policy for the pack, and people were coming and going all the time. The question was whether or not Micah wanted to bother with any of them that evening.

When he drove his truck up the gravel driveway, he parked and climbed out, somewhat pleased to see there didn't seem to be an abundance of vehicles in the yard. Pulling out his cigarettes, he lit one and walked up to the wide porch, his boots causing the wood boards to creak before he sat down. The sun had set and he could smell food inside, but he wanted to finish his cigarette before going in and dealing with any of it.

She knew they were replaceable, but still. Regardless, he hadn't burned down the place, so there was no use in thinking about what she'd have wanted to do if he had. No, she was home and that was all she really wanted to think about. When he commented about the money she could ask for, she shook her head a little. "I'm trying to be independent," she told him. "I want to prove that I can make my own way without anyone else's help. Which means I want to pay rent, Micah. So you have to let me, okay? It costs money for me to be here. I want to pull my own weight."

His brows drew together curiously, as if he didn't quite understand what she was offering to do. Rent sounded like a foreign word to him and he stared at her. "You ain't payin' rent," Micah said after a moment as he hefted the box into his arms. "This is where you grew up. Ma would spin in her grave if I took money from you to sleep in your own bed. You wanna help, you can help Chahna with food and gettin' her kids clothes. But you ain't payin' no rent, Shel." His tone left no room for argument as he started toward the house again.

She picked up a couple of the boxes from her car and moved them to the porch. She wanted to argue, but Micah wasn't sounding like he was going to have it. She wanted to insist because her presence was going to make more bills, but she just nodded. "Alright," she told him. Food and making sure the kids had clothes. That was good enough, she supposed. At least she'd feel like she was actually doing something and not just feeding off of her brother. "I can do that. Anything else you want me to take care of?," she asked him. "I might as well be doing something around here other than just lazing about. I can help watch the kids some," she offered. "Give Chahna a break so she can get some sleep every once in a while." She'd been helping out so far anyway, but she wanted to know if there was more her brother would like for her to do.

"Whatever Chahna needs you to do," Micah said simply. "Just help out around the house, keepin' it clean. I'm sure you got other stuff you wanna be doing too." Since she was home now, Micah was less likely to have her followed. She could do what she wanted to do as long as she came home. And he knew Chahna could use the help, especially with the kids around. But he didn't want to tie Shelley to just babysitting.

Shelley nodded. She could do that. He was right, though, she had other things that she wanted to do as well. The fact that he seemed to actually be willing to let her do those things made her smile a little. "I'm glad I'm home," she said as she sat the box on the porch and moved to close her car door. "It finally feels right. Maybe I'm growing up a little," she shrugged.

"Maybe." Micah agreed with a small smirk before opening the creaky screen door to help Shelley bring the boxes inside and up to her room. "I knew you'd see it when you came home. The pack needs you around. And it won't be as bad as you think."

She smiled at her brother and stepped into the farmhouse. For the first time in a while, it didn't feel like walking through the doors of a prison. Maybe it wouldn't be as bad as she thought. Maybe Micah was right. Only time would tell.
