Decisions
Who: Shelley and Micah
What: Sibling stuff
When: Evening, Sunday, August 17
Where: Redding Farm
Rating: low

With most of his business in the city taken care of, Micah headed home around sunset. He wasn't sure who would be home, but that wasn't unusual. The farmhouse had an open door policy for the pack, and people were coming and going all the time. The question was whether or not Micah wanted to bother with any of them that evening.

When he drove his truck up the gravel driveway, he parked and climbed out, somewhat pleased to see there didn't seem to be an abundance of vehicles in the yard. Pulling out his cigarettes, he lit one and walked up to the wide porch, his boots causing the wood boards to creak before he sat down. The sun had set and he could smell food inside, but he wanted to finish his cigarette before going in and dealing with any of it.

Shelley had spent most of the day at her apartment, cleaning out the few things that she had there. The furniture wasn't worth bringing home, so she had packed up her clothes and her school things and she'd loaded the bit into the car because she wanted to at least be independent enough to do that. She didn't need some big fanfare to get her moved back into her room at the farmhouse. She could do it on her own. Shelley figured Micah would be too pleased with her returning to the house for good to really care that she hadn't asked someone to help her.

She pulled up in the yard not long after he did. She caught sight of him as she climbed out of the car and gave a small smile. Then she moved to the back of the car and picked up a box, heading up to the porch with it and setting it down. "I'm staying," she told him. "No more running away."

Micah said nothing to Shelley until she was on the porch and placing a box on the ground. He exhaled some smoke, his eyes on her face. "Think Chahna mentioned somethin' about that," Micah said simply. "It's the right decision." That much he believed, at least. Shelley belonged at the farm with her pack. Micah would let her go to school, or teach, or do whatever it was she felt was necessary, but his willingness was also contigent upon her own willingness to listen and cooperate with him.

She sighed. Of course that's all he would say. It's the right decision. Nothing like 'I'm glad you're gonna stay' or 'I'm happy that you're not leaving'. Just a simple statement, almost nothing more than an acknowledgement. "Yeah," she said. "I think so, too."

"Do you?" Micah raised a brow, his lips twitching around his cigarette as he studied her. "That sigh tells me somethin' different. Maybe I'm curious how Chahna got you to stay when you wanted to fight me tooth and nail on it."

"The sigh is because you're always so matter of fact. So simplistic in your response. I tell you I"m staying, which I know is what you want, and instead of seeing happy, you're just like 'it's the right decision'," she said, shaking her head a little. It was the way that Micah was, so she really shouldn't have expected anything otherwise. "I didn't want to fight you on it. I want to be here, I just want to do other things too," she said, shrugging her shoulder. "I'm making the effort. This is the first step. I'm here and I'm not going anywhere."

Micah pulled his cigarette from his mouth and scanned his gaze along the tree line. "I'm happy you're staying," he told her. "But you know I ain't ever been one to throw confetti at good news." Micah had always been to the point, and he never saw it as a bad thing. Sometimes people wanted more from him, but he didn't have it in him to give it to them. His eyes ticked to Shelley. "We'll make it work, Shelley."

He certainly wasn't a confetti thrower. She was almost surprised that he actually admitted he was happy she was staying. She nodded a little when his eyes flicked back to her. "Yeah," she said. "We will." She was going to try harder, she'd decided. They were both stubborn and she knew she was going to have to learn to make some adjustments. If he was going to have to, she would too. "I'm happy that I'm staying, too," she said. "I've missed my family. A lot more than I wanted to admit. I don't want to lose that again."

"You won't have to," Micah said. He licked his lips and looked away again, tapping some of the ash from his cigarette onto the porch floor. "Things're gonna get a lot better. For us... for the whole pack. Might take some time, but it's gonna happen." He was going to make damn sure of it. Micah was done being viewed as a uncivilized, misfit pack. It was time to make some moves, and he was ready.

His words surprised her a little. Maybe because of the conviction with which he spoke, or the tone that the words came out in. He seemed to believe that things really were going to be different. He was actually going to make an effort? Maybe she'd run away too soon and she was really part of the problem. She didn't want to run any more. She wanted to be able to live with her family and to move forward as part of the pack.

"I'd like that," she said, nodding a little. "I've missed you," she told him, eyes on her brother. "Even if you're a pain sometimes."

Things were going to be different because Micah wanted them to be. He knew some of his pack wouldn't agree with his choices, but that's why he was the alpha. He knew what was best for everyone, even if they couldn't see it. Deacon McCreary's death was just the catalyst he needed to move forward.

Raising a brow at Shelley's words, he glanced at her, a small smirk playing at his lips. "I'm the pain? You're the poster child for pain in the ass sisters," he countered. "Mom would've been proud of that, at least."

Shelley didn't agree with all of Micah's choices. On most days, she only agreed with one or two and that was if it was a good day. He was still a good man and a good alpha. He knew what he was doing and his heart was at least in a good place, even if it wasn't always the best option.

"You are totally the pain," she told him, smiling at her brother and climbing up onto the porch so she could move to sit beside him. "You know I couldn't go easy on you," she murmured. "You like a challenge."

"Sometimes," Micah said simply. Shelley was a Redding, so he had never expected her to just roll over and do as he said. He respected his sister's independence on some level, even if tended to drive him mad from time to time. He looked at Shelley when she sat, smoking some more of his cigarette before he spoke again. "What have you been up to since you came home?"

She shrugged a little. "Spending time with Cha Cha and the kids," she said. "Getting resettled. Thinking. A lot. I've been pretty selfish lately," she admitted. She could at least own her shortcomings. She knew she hadn't made all of the best choices, so she was going to do what she could to amend those things. "I'm sorry, Micah. I really do want to make this work. I don't want to not be part of the pack. I'm sorry for the way that I acted back at the apartment. And I'm sorry that I didn't tell you I was coming back to town. I should have."

The fact that Shelley would admit to being in the wrong surprised Micah. Given how often they were at each other's throats before, he never expected her to actually apologize for it. He studied her, trying not to be suspicious of her sudden change of heart. Micah knew Shelley wasn't the type for ulterior motives, even if he was.

"Okay," he said slowly. Micah raised a brow. "Why the change of heart."

"Because I wasn't thinking about anyone but myself and after being here for the last few days, I've realized that." In a lot of ways. With what Chahna had said to her and what she'd realized herself after that conversation. She'd been so angry with Micah and so convinced that he was trying to take away her independence that she didn't even consider the way she was hurting the rest of the pack by shunning them the way she had shunned her brother.

She tucked her hair behind her ear and shrugged her shoulder slightly. "We're both stubborn as the day is long and I think that I was fighting you so hard and not looking at the bigger picture. Not trying to make some sort of compromise because I just wanted my way so badly. I don't want to be like that anymore. I want my dreams still, but I don't want them without the pack or without you."

Micah listened silently, and of course he knew she was sincere. He was grateful that she had seemed to come to her senses, though he wasn't naive enough to think they wouldn't butt heads again, and often. "They're glad to have you back," Micah said, of the pack. He had hoped bringing Shelley back to the farm house would help her realize how badly she was needed and it seemed like it had. "So am I."

Shelley knew they were going to butt heads. She was damned certain of it. It was just the way that things worked between the two of them. Between her and all of her brothers, actually.

Being back at the farmhouse had her realizing that running away didn't solve anything. It hurt her, deep down, and it hurt Chahna and the kids. It hurt her family. It even hurt Micah, whether he would admit as much aloud or not. When he admitted that he was glad to have her back, she smiled softly and looked up at him. "I'm not going to run away again," she promised him. "I know that this is where I belong." It's what their mother would have wanted.

He nodded, because she was right. This was where she belonged. Micah had been trying to show her that since she left, but somehow he managed to bite back on the I told you so that threatened at his lips.

"I'm glad you're seeing it that way," he told her. Micah glanced at he box she had set down on the porch. "That's all your stuff? Or do you have more in the car you need brought in."

She was surprised that he didn't utter those words. She'd been expecting him to since the moment she opened her mouth and started to explain why she'd decided to stay with the pack at the farmhouse.

"No," she told him. "There's more in the car. Still not much. I left the furniture. Wasn't worth bringing anyway," she sighed. "So just a bunch of boxes of clothes and books and things. I can get it," she told him, standing up and taking advantage of the fact that he was closer to her height now. She kissed his scruffy cheek and sighed. "I'll try more," she promised. "Even when it's hard."

"Good." Micah felt a bit of warmth in his chest when Shelley gave him a kiss. Even if they had their differences, she was still his baby sister, and it was in his nature to do whatever he would to protect her. And he would. His lips twitched again and he looked at Shelley. "I'll try more too. I even resisted burnin' down your building, 'cause I had a feeling you'd decide to stay. Progress."

She gave him a look when he talked about burning down her building. "What am I going to do with you?," she said, laughing and shaking her head as she hopped off of the porch and headed for her car to bring in a couple more of the boxes. "You'd better be glad that you didn't. All of my things were in there. I'd have been so pissed if you burnt up my school stuff and the rest of my clothes and I had to pay for more. I'm already out a deposit for having the apartment in the first place and breaking the lease. I don't want to lose my things too."

Micah shrugged. "They're just things. Replaceable things." He wouldn't have really burned down the place. He would have just found a way to get it condemned somehow. "But you got everything you need, so it ain't worth worryin' about now." He stood and started down the porch steps to help with the boxes, despite her saying she could get them. "And you know if you need money, you can ask."

She knew they were replaceable, but still. Regardless, he hadn't burned down the place, so there was no use in thinking about what she'd have wanted to do if he had. No, she was home and that was all she really wanted to think about. When he commented about the money she could ask for, she shook her head a little. "I'm trying to be independent," she told him. "I want to prove that I can make my own way without anyone else's help. Which means I want to pay rent, Micah. So you have to let me, okay? It costs money for me to be here. I want to pull my own weight."

His brows drew together curiously, as if he didn't quite understand what she was offering to do. Rent sounded like a foreign word to him and he stared at her. "You ain't payin' rent," Micah said after a moment as he hefted the box into his arms. "This is where you grew up. Ma would spin in her grave if I took money from you to sleep in your own bed. You wanna help, you can help Chahna with food and gettin' her kids clothes. But you ain't payin' no rent, Shel." His tone left no room for argument as he started toward the house again.

She picked up a couple of the boxes from her car and moved them to the porch. She wanted to argue, but Micah wasn't sounding like he was going to have it. She wanted to insist because her presence was going to make more bills, but she just nodded. "Alright," she told him. Food and making sure the kids had clothes. That was good enough, she supposed. At least she'd feel like she was actually doing something and not just feeding off of her brother. "I can do that. Anything else you want me to take care of?," she asked him. "I might as well be doing something around here other than just lazing about. I can help watch the kids some," she offered. "Give Chahna a break so she can get some sleep every once in a while." She'd been helping out so far anyway, but she wanted to know if there was more her brother would like for her to do.

"Whatever Chahna needs you to do," Micah said simply. "Just help out around the house, keepin' it clean. I'm sure you got other stuff you wanna be doing too." Since she was home now, Micah was less likely to have her followed. She could do what she wanted to do as long as she came home. And he knew Chahna could use the help, especially with the kids around. But he didn't want to tie Shelley to just babysitting.

Shelley nodded. She could do that. He was right, though, she had other things that she wanted to do as well. The fact that he seemed to actually be willing to let her do those things made her smile a little. "I'm glad I'm home," she said as she sat the box on the porch and moved to close her car door. "It finally feels right. Maybe I'm growing up a little," she shrugged.

She smiled at her brother and stepped into the farmhouse. For the first time in a while, it didn't feel like walking through the doors of a prison. Maybe it wouldn't be as bad as she thought. Maybe Micah was right. Only time would tell.
