I will break you down.
Who: April and Mikhail
What: Mikhail puts his plan in motion.
When: Saturday night
Where: The alley behind the Chicago Theater, then elsewhere
Rating: R (kidnapping, language probably)

April's gig in Into the Woods had been her dream come true- even if she was understudying for one of the evil stepsisters. Hell, especially since she was understudying, considering one came down with some version of the plague that had hit the city since winter, and she had the chance to shine in the actual spotlight tonight. It'd been a key performance of her career; the first that could lead to many actual roles, and she. Had. Nailed it.

So what if it was a minor role, and people would be calling her by the name of the girl she replaced during the whole cast party afterward. April was fine with correcting them, and would with a smile on her face.

The curtain had just gone down on the final act. April, still in bodice, corset, and the full-makeup of a woman who'd just been attacked by a flock of birds, milled out the back bay door with a handful of the other cast and chorus members to grab some fresh air. Backstage could reach the upper 90's in temperature, especially in the 'lower' dressing rooms, so even on the coldest nights, it was fairly well known tradition to have a smoke-break in costume in the brick alley behind.

Interestingly enough, the alley itself had a bad reputation. It'd been where Jeffery Dahmer picked up a number of his victims from the nearby bus station. It had also been the death-site of more than three hundred turn-of-the-century theatergoers... mostly children.. who had fled from an upper story fire escape that wasn't finished in the great fire that destroyed the original theater. The whole place had a haunted reputation that she liked to tease Eli about, and it never strayed far from topic in the suspicious theater crowd. One of them offered April a smoke as she meandered in the cool breeze. She declined, fanning herself with her crow-shredded fan, and lingered around until her cheeks weren't so red under the grease paints.

April stared up at him, full agreement that she couldn't understand written all over her eyes- but the gist of what he planned to get out of this whole mess, that was pretty goddamn clear.

A suicide mission. Suicide by Elias... and that seriously did not sit well with her. Not for Mikhail's sake, but for Eli's. April's throat tightened up and went a little dry in the silence that followed. Her mind going a million miles a second, trying to figure out what she could do to derail it.

"How do you plan on 'being the monster'?" she asked, hushed from nerves.

Mikhail sighed. "This," he told her. "I've kidnapped you. I'm holding you prisoner. I'm sure he's thinking I've done all manner of horrible things to you. That's enough." He hoped it was enough. While he was a monster, he did have some principles. April was an innocent human. She didn't deserve what he'd already done to her, let alone anything worse. She was the kind of person Mikhail had been trained to help. Not harm. What he'd done was a direct violation of everything Rich had taught him. But he couldn't think of any other way out and was trying to do the least amount of harm to an innocent.

"You're right- he probably is thinking it- but the second he gets here, he'll see that's not true..." April countered, but was trying to keep a very careful hold on her tone.

"I told you- you don't know him, and because I love him, I won't let you trick him into forcing his own hand." She rolled her lips, imploring him with honest, determined eyes. "What kind of person would I be if I just sit back and let that happen?"

"He'll see your dress torn in half and your tears and won't care the difference," Mikhail pointed out. "As he shouldn't. What I did was wrong. I did it so he would have a reason."

Mikhail went over to the fireplace to add more wood to the fire. "You'll be saving people from a monster," he told her. "Someday, I won't be able to fight the darkness. I'm alone, because I'm not supposed to exist. I'm tired being alone. Of fighting. Of killing. But I won't condemn anyone else to hell for knowing me. There's already been enough people who died so I could live. No more."

Raj's thoughts raced through his mind. He thought just kissing him would condemn him. Mikhail didn't know if that was true or not. The idea it might be, that loving him was condemnation, was too much. That's why he'd pushed both Raj and Quill away. He wouldn't be their damnation.

"You tore my dress because I asked you to, then gave me your shirt- on your own accord," April pointed out. "I won't say you're not a monster, but that isn't 'monster' behavior."

She watched him tensely as he moved toward the fire, breathing out a long sigh through her nose. Her thoughts shot toward wondering where Eli was now... what he was thinking. She was so far out of her league with this man... He was making it obvious there was not going to be any talking him down, or out of it.

"What if you're wrong."

It was all she could think of saying, and came with a small, desperate shrug and a shake of her head. "What if by forcing Eli to kill you, you're condemning him to hell? What if he misses and you end up killing him? Or what if killing you turns you into something worse?"

It didn't matter what had happened, only what appeared to happen. Elias would be rightfully so concerned about the woman he loved, Mikhail doubted he'd ask too many questions until the danger passed.

"Elias has killed a lot of monsters," he reminded April. "One more makes no difference. Especially a demon." Mikhail shook his head. "It doesn't matter. He and his brother won't leave me to destroy anything else. They were taught better than to leave evidence or loose strings. The Laskos were one of the most respected hunter families. They know their trade well."

April didn't say anything for a few long moments, her chest tight with breaths that were uncomfortable. He wouldn't even entertain the thought. He wouldn't budge, and it made her heart burn for Eli.

"Is there anything you care about?" she finally breathed in more raw honesty than normal. "Anything, or anyone you love?"

"No," he said, looking away. "Everyone who ever cared about me, who I let myself care about, are dead." Which was a trend he wanted to stop now, not when there were two people he'd very much like to be closer to. For different reasons, but the very idea of either of them coming to an end like his mother or Rich hurt too much. "I've never had anything to care about." He really didn't want to start now, not with the consequences it could bring.

April tried to think of something to say after that, for several seconds of pregnant silence. Nothing came. After a while, she finally dropped her eyes from him, down to the rope still coiled around her ankles. Rolling her lips and steeling her nerve, she loosened the knot with her fingers, and pulled herself free.

April shook her head and stood up, looking down at him the way he'd been doing to her earlier. Her voice was quiet, a little shakey, but still determined.

"Anything that happens to me tonight, Mikhail- is all on you," she reminded. "Keep your hands off me unless you want me to piss myself right here," she added sourly, turning toward the back hallway, which had to lead to a bathroom. Even if it didn't currently have water.

He sighed again. "Be careful, there's broken glass in there," he warned. The place had been vandalized several times. Mikhail had cleaned up the rooms he planned to use. He knew very well if anything happened to her was his fault. That's why he was warning her to be careful. Hopefully, Elias would arrive soon.

A million things were running through April's head as she carefully stepped into the disheveled bathroom, lit only by the blaring streetlight right outside a small privacy window above the toilet. She shut the door behind her, staring at that window, thinking it might be just big enough to shimmy through. If it were the kind that opened.

The broken glass on the floor appeared to be from the wall-sized mirror that had once been over the sink. Her dance shoes crunched on the small pieces as her mind raced. She could pick up the toilet tank lid, smash open the window and squeeze herself through it... but she'd probably shred her stomach on broken glass.

She could use shards from the broken mirror to stab him in the leg and break for the door, but she didn't trust her nerve to have any kind of accurate aim or strength once she got that close to him.

After being left alone for what had to be a minute, and he didn't follow her...

Suddenly a plan sparked itself into April's head, fueled by a very strong, possibly irrational need to both get away from the situation, and keep Eli from getting dragged into it. She grabbed the heavy porcelain tank lid from the back of the waterless toilet, then sharply jabbed out the window. The sound of breaking glass was sharp as the glass itself, carrying easily through the empty house... and she knew he wasn't far.

That's why she was ready for him, right next to the bathroom door, the tank lid arched back in her hands like a twenty-pound Louisville Slugger. With her heart beating in her throat, blood poinding in her ears so loud she could hear it echo, the second the door open, she swung for head-level.

He didn't think anything about her taking a few minutes. Her avenues of escape were limited and she had nowhere to run to. Mikhail was about to check on her when he heard the window break. He had to give her points for her courage, but he also didn't want her cutting herself on the broken glass.

Whatever he was about to say when he opened the door was cut off when the tank lid smacked him in the face. Momentum did most of the work, she'd chosen an unwieldy club and the angle didn't allow her to put much oomph behind it. He staggered back with a pained grunt, back hitting the opposite wall and he was blinded by blood and pain.

Even if it wasn't a grandslam hit, April felt the thing connect hard, hard enough to split the porcelain in her hands and fall heavy to the ground. Before they'd even settled, she bolted past him fast as she could, breath held in her chest like fire.

She tore down the hallway in a dead sprint toward the front door, but when she pulled it open, it caught on something... something that wasn't supposed to be there. Before she had time to realize she'd snapped a wire at ankle level, the heavy bookshelf that'd been attached to it hit the side of the door, nearly closing it on her. With a shout, she threw her momentum forward, trying to clear both for the freedom outside, but it was so close... too close-

Mikhail recovered from the blow to the face and went after her. "April, don't-" he managed to choke out but was too late. He put on speed catching up to her and shoving her out of the way onto the porch. The bookcase broke the door and landed on Mikhail, pinning him to ground. He closed his eyes, which were flashing red because of the strain to breathe. He just hoped he'd gotten April out of the way in time.

Before she realized what had happened, a force had shoved her through the squeeze hard enough for her shoulders to lurch past her feet. April landed on both hands with momentum that skidded her forward, nearly down the cement porch steps before she finally settled. Scraped and bruised, but not crushed.

Mikhail hadn't been so lucky.

"Jesus... oh shit-" she panted, scrambling to her feet, her eyes on the pile of books and weighted wood pinning the insane hunter down. What do I do, what do I do! April's mind locked in panic, her hands shoving through her mess of tangles and curls.

She should run... that'd been her plan first and foremost- let Eli find her on the street, or get to a gas station and call the cops.

"I'm... I'm sorry- I couldn't let you do this to us," she rasped at Mikhail, urgency in her tone, as well as apology. "I'll get help..."

She was already stammering down the stairs, when help was rolling up the street. April ran at the headlights, still dressed in nothing but a leotard, garter tights, and a man's large flannel shirt, waving blindly for them to stop. She didn't realize who's headlights they were, until they stopped.

Elias had driven as fast as he could manage through the city to the location that Jayne's scrying had given them. It wasn't absolutely specific, but once they were in the vicinity, Raj's nose could be used to at least track them closer. He hadn't been happy that the werewolf tagged along, but there really hadn't been time enough to sit there and argue and his usefulness might prove helpful enough for Eli to forgive him of his bullshit from earlier.

They rounded the block just as April started running down the road. His headlights danced on her skin and he knew as he pulled to a stop and shoved the car into park that it was her. Eli was out of the vehicle without even bothering to slam the door, only just barely letting the car settle into a halted position before springing free of it. He rushed to April, snatching her up in his arms and holding tight to her.

"I got you," he breathed, his heart thudding against his chest. He didn't even have time to get the question on his lips before Raj climbed out of the car and filled it in for him.

"Where's Mikhail?"

He didn't wait for the answer and took off running towards the scent that he'd all but memorized. Laced with the coppery twang of blood, he knew something was wrong. By the time he got to the house that April had run from, he thought he'd psyched himself up to be prepared for whatever he might see, but he wasn't prepared to see Mikhail pinned beneath a mountain of books and wood.

"No," he breathed out, immediately rushing up the porch and lifting the weight of the shelf off of Mikhail. "Help me!," he grunted. He couldn't hold the shelf and pull him out at the same time, but whether or not the hunters would come to his aid was yet to be determined.

Max was out of the car as fast as Eli and Raj, gun trained behind April as his brother grabbed her. Nothing. He was thinking the same thing Raj expressed. The young werewolf took off, Max sighed and followed him.

"Ah shit," he cursed as he saw the hunter pinned under a pile of wood, books, and bricks. Raj easily moved the fallen shelf off Mikhail, but couldn't pull him free. Max holstered his pistol, and knelt down to pull the guy free.

"Goddamn, what're you made of, lead?" he demanded, wincing as his bad shoulder protested. "Eli, get over here and help me." Maybe if his shoulder wasn't fucked and the guy was helping he could do it.

Mikhail could breathe and the pain was manageable, but he shook his head. "Just leave me," he protested. "If I lose control..."

Max rolled his eyes. "Yeah, no. Eli!"

April twisted her hands in Eli's shirt and buried her face in his neck and hair, pulling herself into him as far as the laws of physics would allow. She was shaking, but not crying. No sobs of terror or pain, but the hard buzz of adrenaline that made her thoughts a ball of chaos until the salve of his voice reminded her. He was here. He was fine. Now to keep it that way.

"He wants you to kill him-" she breathed, finally pulling back when Raj and Max's voices mixed urgency. "That's what this was about... He just wants to die but I couldn't... I couldn't let him do that to you..."

Elias was more confused when April started to speak than he had been initially. Mikhail wanted to die. He wanted to be killed. He nodded at her words and brushed her hair back from her face. "Are you alright?," he asked her firstly. That was the most important thing. Once she affirmed that she was, he let out a breath. "Everything is going to be okay," he promised her. "I want you to get in the car, alright? You'll be safe there." And out of the line of fire if one happened to arise.

"Go on," he told her, leaving very little room for her to argue before he kissed her forehead and rushed towards his brother and Raj as they tried to pull the pinned hunter from beneath the rubble. Reaching for Mikhail, he helped Max in the process of pulling him free. "Goddamn you're heavy," he grunted. "Stop fightin' the help. You're not dying tonight." Not by his hands at least. April had worked too hard to keep the blood off of his fingertips for him to just let Mikhail get what he wanted.

Raj grunted under the weight of the bookshelf. "Let us help you, goddamn it!," he growled out at the man. "Please."

"Better me than all of you," Mikhail countered through gritted teeth. He was stronger than both the twins combined. Raj's plea hurt more than his ribs. "No."

Max groaned. "Raj just wolf out and take it off him," he said irritably. "I am not blowing my shoulder playing tug of war here." That would solve the problem whether the Gypsy liked it or not.

With the way Mikhail was resisting, Raj didn't have much choice. Max's words were his only option, so he wasted no time in doing as he was told. Not that he would have done otherwise. Mikhail may have believed that he deserved to die, but Raj wasn't convinced. There wasn't enough time to really think about any of that, though. There wasn't time to think of anything but saving Mikhail from the fate he thought he deserved.

The tearing of cloth and the shifting of bones sounded in the night air and with a low rumbling growl, Raj lifted and threw the bookcase across the room, freeing Mikhail from beneath it. After a moment, he sucked in a breath, forcing his beast back down, Raj reached down to assist the Laskos in getting Mikhail to his feet. Claws retracted and fur sank back into skin, fingertips wrapping around the half-demon's wrist to aid him.

Elias let out a breath once the man was to his feet, his eyes flicking to his brother, then to April. He hadn't figured she'd actually listen to him when he told her to get in the car. He shook his head at her. "Stubborn," he told her. "That's what you are."

April was definitely stubborn, but at the current moment she was also rendered speechless. Big blue eyes locked on Raj- who hadn't been Raj two seconds ago, but was now- obviously trying to process a lot of what she'd just seen.

She knew the bartender was a werewolf... she knew a few people in her life were werewolves, but actually watching one turn hadn't been on her list of experiences yet. And tonight, she hadn't exactly been prepared for it.

"Yeah," she breathed nodding. "I just..." April blinked back to reality. "Mikhail pushed me out of the way. I ..broke his nose. I want to make sure this ends right."

Mikhail winced as Raj shifted and tossed off the shelf. Not because it hurt, but because now he knew they wouldn't just let him die. He reluctantly let the three men pull him to his feet. His nose was still bleeding, his ribs were probably bruised, and he was covered in cuts and scratches. None of them were so bad he couldn't keep control. "Just go," he told them as he jerked from their grasps and turned to walk back into the house.

Max looked over at April, rubbing his bad shoulder which was strained from trying to lift the other hunter against his will. "Okay, none of this makes sense," he admitted. "Anybody wanna explain what the hell's going on?"
