When the customers walk around the midway, no one really looked where they were putting their feet. Most of the time they didn’t bother because they were really rather worried about what might be there (especially after visiting the haunted house) and most of the time that doesn’t bother anyone. Especially not Yuriko who stays out of the way.
But tonight curiosity had gotten the better of her and she’d spent some time hanging around the midway, watching the people walk past and the sounds of liveliness drawing her attention. She’d hidden behind one of the game booths and just watched the world go by, the enthusiasm of the people around her totally infectious. Most of the times she tended to stay behind the scenes, perch on top of her trailer and just watch from afar (she had good eyesight, she could see well enough, even if the light did catch her eyes sometimes just right and make them look like they glowed). And it didn’t take long for her to remember why she stayed away from the Midway when it was really busy.
She’d been perched in a place that she considered out of the way when there had been a sudden rush of people. She’d tried to move, but by the time she realised she’d actually need to and that she ran the risk of being discovered, the rush of people approached, a couple stamping on her tail in quick succession, and someone in a wheelchair. She jumped, tried to pull back but the wheelchair had parked on her tail - everyone stopping to stare at the and the movement just made the tip hurt and also the muscles across her back strain and at the very base of her tail… it felt like someone had set fire to it.
She let out a loud, echoing yelp that sounded like a dog being kicked.
The crowd around her moved in surprise, looking for the poor animal but she disappeared behind the next tent and sat on the floor with her tail in her hands. She could feel her pulse in the tip, the throbbing brought tears to her eyes. Most, when they were hurt, would go and see someone, but her animal instincts took over and she just hid behind the tent and did her best not to cry.
