AFA still pushing to boycott Ford

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]cold_poet)

Hi all, it was requested when we made our entry posts to mention what we're doing to combat Dominionists, so I hope I'm correct in thinking this post has a place here.

I keep an eye on the AFA so I know what they're up to and can try to negate some of their efforts by doing the opposite, and encouraging others to do the same - and also because they are very kind about providing me with lists of politicians who support gay rights and letting me know when to send Ford Motor Co. a THANK YOU letter for supporting gay rights. *G*

I just got another call to arms for the Ford boycott. THIS is a link to BoycottFord.com where they detail the many sundry ways Ford has supported the "homosexual agenda." *rolls eyes*

An earlier post regarding doctors who won't provide certain care mentioned concern over making a list of doctors who DO NOT deny care on a religious basis, out of fear that they would be targeted and harassed. It's a very well founded fear, I think.

The best way I can think of to respond to these kinds of actions is to respond in kind. SUPPORT the companies, tell them you appreciate what they are doing. I was dead serious about sending thank you notes, I do, every time I get one of these notices. I would HATE to see Ford, or any other company, give in to this kind of pressure because these people managed to affect their bottom line. The domino-effect that could have would suck. If the risk to profit is shown to outweigh the karmic points, other companies won't be so eager to step up and support organizations like PFLAG, either.

Before everyone continues the craziness of closeted Donnie Davies and his overt fundie homophobia, I suppose it's important for everyone to know that he's been 'outed' as Dallas-based actor Joey Oglesby, an ex-member of a troop of comedians that specializes in a "comedy stew of dance, homophobic/gay experimentation, male chauvinism, obscure racism, and spiritual revelation."

Gays on campus

"Unlike A&M, not all colleges allowed the activists on campus.

Soulforce organizers said they were denied access to Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla., Regent University in Virginia Beach, Va., and Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va."

I don't think they realized that I was one of the people who answered all the demographic questions "correctly" - Christian, white, middle-class, etc - and still disagreed with them. I figure if they're going to start another petition, I'm going to post the link here so all of you lovely people (Canadians, at least, and I can get you a few postal codes if you're interested in padding the vote, as the other side is doubtless doing) can vote against re-establishing the traditional definition of marriage.

These organizations support a boycott of Ford Motor Company simply because Ford, knowing it has to advertise to everyone or risk losing market share, has backed off its agreement with the AFA to not advertise to GLBT folks. Know (some of) your enemies, people:

Upholding the Constitution, not the bible.

A friend posted a great link which detailed a wonderful response on the part of Jamie Raskin of Maryland to a question from a member of the state senate, republican Senator Nancy Jacobs, on the topic of amendments to the state constitution to prohibit gay marriage. The very short article in the cut is well worth reading. And the blogger who posted it, said it more eloquently that I could have.

I also found the full text of his testimony before the Maryland Senate Committee.

Turns out that Mr. Raskin, a professor of law at American University, will be running for state senate in the 2006 Election.

Catholic Charities Ends All Adoptions -- To Avoid Adopting to Gays

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]britzkrieg)

Beautiful hypocrisy:

In a stunning turn of events, Archbishop Sean P. O'Malley and leaders of Catholic Charities of Boston announced yesterday that the agency will end its adoption work, deciding to abandon its founding mission, rather than comply with state law requiring that gays be allowed to adopt children.

The Rev. J. Bryan Hehir, president of Catholic Charities of Boston, and Jeffrey Kaneb, chairman of the board, said that after much reflection and analysis, they could not reconcile church teaching that placement of children in gay homes is ''immoral" with Massachusetts law prohibiting discrimination against gays...

Almost immediately after the announcement, Governor Mitt Romney, who was in Tennessee speaking to a Republican group, issued a statement saying he would file legislation to exempt religious organizations that provide adoption services from the state's antidiscrimination laws.

Quoting Bible to attack gays is hypocritical
By Leonard Pitts Jr.

An open letter to Donna Reddick:

I'm writing this for Desiree. She's a student at Miami Sunset Senior High, where you teach business technology. A few days ago, she sent me an e-mail recounting an incident that happened on campus last week.

It seems that on three successive days, the morning announcements, which are televised throughout the school, featured student-produced segments on the subject of gay rights.

On the first day came comments from students who took the pro position. On the second day came remarks from a counselor who spoke of the need for students to respect one another. On the third day came you.

You and a few students, actually. One told classmates homosexuality was ''unacceptable in the eyesight of God.'' Another said gays were ``unrighteous.''Read more... )

Democrat for Senate: Death penalty for practicing 'gays'

"Just like we have laws against murder, we have laws against stealing, we have laws against taking drugs – we should have laws against immoral conduct," Keiser told WTOL-TV in Toledo.

Keiser, 61, says he's running as a Democrat because that's how he was registered the last time he voted.

The trucker, who hails from Fremont, Ohio, says there needs to be more adherence to biblical values in government, business and education – something he claims DeWine is not promoting.

"I believe that the United States has been moved in a Godless direction by the courts," he told the Sandusky Register. "To get good men on the court, we need good senators."

And I looked up the site, just to see if it was some bizarre prank. Then I Googled for a confirmation. Either it's a very elaborate prank or he's on the up-and-up.

This article gives his address, if you want to TP his house or toss the flaming object of your choice.

Quebec Priests Oppose Vatican on Gay Issues

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]jargon_john)

In a rare public dissent, 19 Catholic priests have denounced the Vatican's opposition to gay marriage and allowing homosexuals into the priesthood.

The clerics signed an open letter that ran Sunday in Montreal's La Presse newspaper, criticizing the church's positions on the issues.

The priests said the church was invoking "natural law" to make its case against homosexuality, arguing that slavery was also once considered "natural."

Christian denominations that support homosexuality

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]diala)

I don't know if this is on topic or not, but I figured this would be a good place to ask. If this sort of post isn't allowed here, then I'll delete it.

Anyway, a few months ago, I saw a list of church denominations and weither or not they support homosexuals or homosexuality (as in, not try to 'convert' them into ex-gays or think it is a sin). Does anyone know online where a similar list is? I am interested in going to a church sermon sometime, but I wish not to get caught in one strongly dominionist, especially one that isn't afraid to codemn gay people.

David Vs. Goliath

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]sunfell)

This taskforce has undertaken a study of "lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender-affirming religious organizations". Naturally, they've discovered that there are a whole lot of conservative religious organizations lined up against them.

Read the report.

In recent years, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people have faced unprecedented attacks from a highly organized religious right. David v. Goliath outlines the "parallel" progressive faith movement that welcomes LGBT people, and has grown simultaneously with the secular rights movement. It reveals the intense opposition to these progressive faith groups and the huge forces waged against them by the anti-LGBT industry, which has unabashedly and effectively rallied conservative people of faith to its cause.

Ford U-turn over gay media ads

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]nebris)

Jamie Wilson in Washington
Friday December 16, 2005
From The Guardian

Ford is to resume buying corporate ads in gay publications, following criticism from gay rights groups who accused the motor company of succumbing to pressure from the conservative group the American Family Association.

In an attempt to end a public relations disaster, Ford wrote to gay groups saying it would resume buying corporate ads in gay media, featuring all eight of the company's brands, reversing a decision to pull them. Previously only Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo ran ads in gay publications.

"Ford's action is a positive outcome and win for equality and fairness," said Human Rights Campaign president Joe Solmonese. "Ford has sent a powerful signal that corporate America values its gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees and consumers."

The AFA called for a boycott of Ford vehicles in May, citing what it claimed was the company's "extensive promotion of homosexuality" including making contributions to gay rights groups.

The AFA suspended the boycott in June for six months after talks with Ford dealers and then ended it altogether after a meeting with Ford executives. Afterwards Ford announced it was going to pull the ads from gay publications and the AFA claimed victory. "While we still have a few differences with Ford, we feel our concerns are being addressed in good faith and will continue to be addressed in the future," Donald Wildmon, the chairman of the Mississippi-based group, said.

Ford denied it had struck a secret deal with the AFA, claiming the decision to pull the ads was a purely commercial decision. But gay rights groups reacted furiously, accusing Ford of pandering to extremist groups. The decision to reinstate the advertising followed a meeting with gay groups on Monday.
