quick note - creationism on NPR tonight

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]exotic_princess)

I caught this morning that on "The World" tonight on NPR, the following will be discussed.

Creationism in Turkey
American creationists have found allies in the Islamic world. When Turkish school teachers discuss evolution, they must now also talk about God.

Just an FYI if anyone was interested. Check NPR.ORG for your local times.

Tennessee: Creationism battle continues

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]helenangel)

Dominionist state lawmaker Raymond Finney is at it again:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WHBQ FOX13 myfoxmemphis.com) -- There are no constitutional problems with a state senator's resolution to ask Tennessee's top education official whether a supreme being created the universe, the state attorney general said in an opinion released Tuesday.

An evolutionist and a creationist

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]vanar_en_daeor)

Here's a story I stumbled onto today. I thought it was an interesting take between an evolutionist and a creationist. It'd be nice if we could all get along like these two.

Don't forget to look thru the comments after the article as well. They're pretty interesting too.

Loving the Enemy
I thought creationists were monsters, until I married one.

Jan. 4, 2007 - It was only a little while after our first lunch as a married couple that my new husband got a test of faith. It came from my grandmother, who said that she didn’t know how anyone intelligent could be a creationist. Not that I could blame her. Before I met my husband, Rob, I would have laughed and agreed with her. This time, though, I glanced at my new husband, inwardly sighed, and wondered how he’d respond. With grace, as it turned out. “I’m a creationist,” he calmly said. Grandma quickly changed the topic.

When I first met Rob four years ago, I had no idea that he was a creationist. He had told me that his parents were fundamentalist Christians, but was silent about his own beliefs. At the time, I was between churches. I had left the Roman Catholic Church of my youth when I was 16 and would spend the next eight years searching for a new religious home before finally settling upon liberal Quakerism. It was only months into our relationship that he broke the news to me, while I was wondering aloud how different shapes of noses evolved. “I don’t believe in evolution,” he said. “I’m a creationist.”

Blasphemy is a really big sin

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]roseross)

Don't know if this is appropriate but as a person to whom spirituality is important, I have a few comments on blasphemy that might -- just possibly -- be useful in discussion with Dominionists who are waivering.

"Blasphemy" is an old-fashioned word that probably means nothing to the atheists in this group but it means quite a lot to a religious person, particularly a fundamentalist. It is the worst sin of all because it is the act of directly demeaning God. Blasphemy cheapens and corrupts ideas that are meant to be preserved intact and reverenced as holy. Read more... )

Creationism museum in KY

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]exotic_princess)

Out of morbid curiosity, I'd love to actually look around in there and check out what they're saying. Without, you know, giving them money to do it.

Article here

PETERSBURG, Ky. — Like most natural history museums, this one has exhibits showing dinosaurs roaming the Earth. Except here, the giant reptiles share the forest with Adam and Eve.

That, of course, is contradicted by science, but that's the point of the $25 million Creation Museum rising fast in rural Kentucky.

Dr, Dino

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]wyldraven)

I've just added Dr. Dino (Kent Hovind) to the DK Wiki here. If anyone has anything they would care to add, please feel free to do so. [info]dr_beowulf, since you have IRL experience with him, perhaps you might have something to add?
