Quote mining is a tactic used quite a bit in the anti-evolution/Intelligent Design Creationism movement... grab a bunch of quotes from prominent scientists and arrange them is such order and out of context to support the straw man argument that has been created.
In a review by Edward T. Oakes (a theologian at St. Mary of the Lake) of the notorious anti-evolution book From Darwin to Hitler: Evolutionary Ethics, Eugenics, and Racism in Germany, by Weikart, Oakes first reiterates the urban legends that Marx was heavily influenced by Darwin, then quotes Darwin from The Origin of Species, to support the notion of social Darwinism, thusly:
""Let the strongest live and the weakest die... . Thus, from the war of nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, namely, the production of the higher animals, directly follows."
That ellipsis following the first sentence actually represents a span of 7 Chapters!!!!!!!!
Very sloppy scholarship.
Between this and the recent "controversy" over Judge Jones, these folks are becoming a parody of themselves, one that even the Onion or Weekly World News couldn't cook up.
Quote mining at it's worst
Shrub appoints leader of abusive Christian group to advisory board

As most of you know, I am a former member of the highly abusive charismatic Christian outfit Every Nation. This organization is, in turn, a repackaging of Maranatha Campus Ministries, one of the more notorious "campus cults" of the 1980s. For more info about my experiences with this bunch, check out the Reader's Digest version. |
